Board games = cardboard. It's in the name of the material itself! But...what about An Age Contrived, a new Euro-style, action-programming strategy game designed by Chris Matthew of indie publisher Bellows Intent? It has magnetic bits, chunky Azul-style tiles, and in the Founder's and Collector's Editions, the player boards are set into solid metal frames. What? And you can shoot those tiles out with a spring/lever mechanism. Whaaaat? We had to bring Chris on to ask how he balanced the component "wow" factor with manufacturing affordability -- and as a big gamer himself, Chris wanted to talk about how games have surprised and delighted us. We were delighted to chat with him, so give us a listen! Timeline: 4:05 - Going Analog's game pick: Open Season. 9:40 - Chris's game pick: Revive. 16:36 - Going Analog's topic: An Age Contrived, balancing cool components with high costs. 41:20 - Chris's topic: how games can surprise and delight us.

MHGG Ep 121 - Whippin Blu-Rays Redux Joined by Wes, the DM for Mile High Dungeon Delvers, our hosts dive into this week's show. With not much happening in their personal lives, they get right to recently played games where Jeff flicked penguins around an extra large school in Ice Cool 2, Wes went on adventures in Action Castle, Adrian sent robots out in City of Gears, and Zach narrowly stayed aloft in Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition. After talking recent plays, the hosts crawl into the Lookback Machine to revisit some of their old reviews. News mainly features new games announced at PaxU like Metal Gear and Clank Legacy. Kickstarter focuses on a massive miniatures game in Tainted Grail and fancy Blood Bowl upgrades with Blizzone. As always the show is wrapped up with a variety of listener feedback. 00:01:50 - Intro Banter! This episode we discuss two of 2016's best games: Mechs vs Minions, an amazing co-op programmable movement game; and Great Western Trail, a heavy rondel game with some deck building. After that we move on to one of the most "thinky" dice games we've ever played, Roll Player. Along the way we'll imagine chasing dairy cows across the United States, mention that female knights are cool, and wonder if League of Legends characters need sensitivity training.

This week Nathan and Ryan sit down with Sam Aho from Sam Says Game Reviews to talk about Mechs vs Minions, the surprisingly good board game from Riot Games. They talk about the mechanisms of the game while skirting those details that some might consider spoilers. Enjoy this special podcast with Sam since Brent will be returning next week and will definitely not allow Sam on the show again.
Episode 9, the one where we try to stay calm while engaged in submarine warfare (and fail)! Captain Sonar is a real-time, team game for 2-8 players, and we weigh in on whether it's great fun on just great stress. Our Music With Boardgames segment included some great fan suggestions, though it should be noted that the sonar soundbite used in the podcast is not from the YouTube video originally linked to us; the original creeped Robert out too much! Joe extends his thanks to Chris Cantrell (of Riot Games) after receiving a resolution on his defective crystal (from Mechs Vs Minions). We also had the opportunity to play the older (and sadly now out of print) WarHammer 40k strategy game Forbidden Stars (from Fantasy Flight Games) and give our initial impressions. Rum & Bones: Second Tide (Cool Mini Or Not) is arriving in the mail and we gave the core box a quick spin. Also from CMON, our Arcadia Quest: Inferno kickstarter arrived in one giant shipment, and we're plugging our way through the new campaign therein. Finally, Joe saw The Great Wall: the movie where Matt Damon fights monsters on the Great Wall of China. Mechs Vs Minions! After an unplanned holiday hiatus, we return with our good friend Joe to hold a lengthy discussion, having played through the entire campaign together. Did it live up to the hype? Are pre-painted miniatures any good? Do we join a secret cult to worship The Box? The sound quality in this episode is unfortunately a bit low and record an unwanted amount of cleanup, so hopefully it's at a presentable state for your ears. Thank you for sticking through it!
We review a big box of bling! Otherwise known as Mechs Vs Minions. But first we start off by looking at some games we've played recently : Above and Below 02:00 Oceanos 09:22 Feast of Odin 15:36 Geek Out! 23:20 Inis 29:12 We then look back a year at Lords of Vegas and Vegas Showdown. We then dive into Mechs vs Minions - sure it has fantastic components, but what about the game? How does it play? What about the mechanisms? It's co-op, so how does it handle the alpha player(s)? It's programmed movement, is that OK? It has a simplist minion AI, are we OK with that? It has drafting, does it do that well? Oh, look at the pretty minis.....

As the episode numbers climb further into double digits the guys decide to change up the show format one more time. Back is a looser banter section where they talk about what fun things they've been up to and briefly chat about a few games they've played recently. From there your intrepid hosts set out on a new quest: To provide a more specific game review section! The target of this weeks quest is the team vs team game of submarine warfare: Captain Sonar! To start this new section, Zach runs through a loose description of the rules, then all 3 hosts chat about their experiences playing the game, and finally they all give their final verdict! Following the shiny new review section comes a welcome bit of familiarity with a Kickstarter Round-Up and Industry News section featuring Thornwatch and Mechs vs Minions. And last, but in no way least, is the discussion of the day where the hosts follow up on last weeks episode about gamenights by discussing what they look for in a "gamenight game" Thanks for listening and enjoy!
