Hello and welcome to Episode 97 of The Last Standee Podcast! In this episode, we TRAVEL! After the Standee Catch-up, Fen breaks ice by talking about a recently fulfilling pet project of ours from COVID times, aka Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread, from the same author as Xia: Legends of a Drift System. Then, Audrey recounts her experience with Faraway (not to be mistaken with Far Away, an entirely different game we also reviewed), a card game with an innovative scoring mechanism. Finally, Alessio closes the episode with crazy car races and wanton destruction with Joyride: Survival of the Fastest - and closes-closes the episode with all the crazy stuff that happened around it. Until next episode, fasten your seatbelt and safe travels!

This week Steve shares his recent experience of playing Smartphone Inc and he had a blast discovering new technology and engaging in patent-wars in the economic simulation Eurogame. Jules dons his evil-Jules cloak and twirls his moustache as he reveals that he loves nothing more than crushing his opponents' Viking armies on Blood Rage. Mitch details his nail-biting finishes in the one-vs-many hidden movement game Specter Ops. A popular measure in the board gaming community is the complexity of a game, which is often described as 'heavy' or 'light'. But does 'heavy' mean difficult? In the Topic of the week, the team discuss the weight of games, their favourite heavy games, and how to overcome the perceived entry barrier. In our Board Game Bracket segment, we wrap-up some previous match-ups: Spyfall vs It's A Wonderful World, Arkham Horror 3rd Ed vs Mysterium, and Arkham Horror LCG vs Inis. And then we unleash our latest battle - Fleet: The Dice Game vs Champions of Midgard. It's Steve vs Mitch in this battle of Viking clans defending a town against an onslaught of trolls, vs ... well, fishing. Yeah, so there's that. (Let's be honest, when even the recording equipment falls asleep during your pitch, you know you're in trouble, Mitch!) In our Swear and Oath segment, Jules fulfilled his oath by playing Lords of Scotland and raises the bar with The Estates. Mitch failed to play Circle the Wagons, but successfully manage to plug Vyper Hyper playmats about 5 times in the space of a minute. He then doubles down with the sci-fi epic Anachrony. And Steve found Arkham Horror: The LCG very Conor-ish (which could be a compliment or not), and vows to play Xia: Legends of a Drift System before the debt collectors come knocking on his door. Sizzling Games: Smartphone Inc (2:18), Blood Rage (14:33), Specter Ops (22:45) Topic of the Week: What is a Heavy Game? Welcome back and join me for another leap into the world of board games. This episode we are traveling to the dark depths of an ancient temple and charting the ever expanding vastness of space.
Intro Banter - This is the (mostly) unscripted intro to the show! We catch up, play games, talk about games that perhaps did not make the main show, and just gab, Welcome! First Impressions – We talk about the first time with a title, from the acquisition to the first look, to the first play and deliver thoughts in writing and on the show. This Episode: Larry: Welcome To New Las Vegas Designed by Alexis Allard & Benoit Turpin Published by Deep Water Games Released in 2020. Alex: Thor, Black Widow, Dr. Strange From Marvel Champions: The Card Game Designed by Michael Boggs, Nate French, Caleb Grace Published by Fantasy Flight Games Released in 2020 (Base Card game released in 2019) On the table - We will examine what the game is like when played, we need to personify that experience, this should be impersonal experience wise, but cover angles and what to expect from the title, cover components, setting, rules and the overall atmosphere. This Time we cover Xia Legends of a Drift System! Designed by Cody Miller Published By Far Off Games Released in 2014 Rules- This covers everything in the Rule book from setup to actually communicating what you are doing when you play. Components- Every piece in the box, this can also cover table presence, what does it look like when it is all laid out. Play- How does the game play, is it smooth, what are the fun interactions, what does it encourage. Theme- What does the title do with its theme, how does it use it to further the narrative of the game and provide atmosphere for those playing. Lighthouse Spotlight - This segment is filled with “hidden” Gems we believe are due more time in the spotlight than they get! Intro Banter - This is the (mostly) unscripted intro to the show! We catch up, play games, talk about games that perhaps did not make the main show, and just gab, Welcome! Getting to know you - We look at certain boardgame related topics and explore strategies for getting involved. We discuss GRAIL games, what they are, why you should care and look into some strategies for acquiring them. (Looking at prices and why they cost so much, not an are they worth it discussion, just that they usually do and to be prepared for this) Digressions - Short Two and a half minute rants and ravings from each host on off-tangent (Or on) topics as they see fit. Larry - What is Value in entertainment? Alex - Lubys & Bad games with lots of Minis. General Genre’ - We look exclusively at a sample selection of games, by Genre’ only, taking note of all unique mechanics and explaining the differences and share our recommendations, experiences and activities within said framework. This time we look at Party games! The reason is it's a very popular genre’ a lot of these titles work as gateways, and also with the current environment, they can be played remotely fairly easily! Examples: Codenames Captain Sonar One Night Ultimate Werewolf Coup Two Rooms and a Boom First Impressions – We talk about the first time with a title, from the acquisition to the first look, to the first play and deliver thoughts in writing and on the show. Blog Post, ---Ask The Bellhop--- This week we are discussion a question from Tabletop Bellhop Patron Brian Kurtz:"Hi Moe and Sean, as you know I'm a Tabletop Bellhop megafan - I've loved your show from the very first episode. From your patient explanations of different mechanics in games to reviews and recommendations, I have gotten a lot out of the show and the website, and I've bought some fantastic games on your recommendation. Thank you so much. My question today is a little different than some other questions you've had which look for specific suggestions of games that meet certain criteria.. Mine is a bit more.... philosophical. I want to know what you think about competition, and gaming. While I encourage you to go wherever that vague prompt takes you in your discussion, the source of the question comes from some experiences I've had watching friends or acquaintances get nasty in competitive situations. Dating back from my childhood playing Monopoly or Atari games and observing the "sore loser" phenomenon in family members or peers, to the first time I played Settlers of Catan in the late 1990s, to trying to weather the mood storms of children (and sometimes grownups) who struggle with competition, I've been struck by just how bad this can get. As two people who game with family, friends, acquaintances, and strangers all the time, what insights do you have into this phenomenon? How do you anticipate when competitiveness can go awry and head it off at the pass? How do you handle people who want to game but aren't good at checking their zest for winning when the situation requires it? Do you have any rules - explicit or implicit - that set the tone for gaming at your house or your events? Apart from sticking to strictly cooperative games, any tips for choosing games based on what you know about your fellow gamers and their ability to handle competition? Thanks guys! Intro Banter - The guys open the show and talk about what's new and happening in their worlds. The City of Kings (By The City Of Games) (Taking off the Lid) our version of unboxing on Instagram! 7th Continent (By Serious Pulp) is STILL on the way as is XIA: Legends of a Drift System (By Far Off Games). What a 2019 for Larry Kickstarter fulfillment! Kickstarter whitehot insanity! Late to the Party- We talk about games that are established in the hobby that we are just now playing. Alex:Through the Ages Larry: Dice City by AEG What it is: "Die Crafting” game where the dice themselves change the city you acquire and build each round. Why it's fun: Die rolling, fun city building, fun puzzle aspects, with accessible but rewarding game play. I.e. looking back over your plans however well they went at the end of a round has been satisfying for me! So I first acquired and played this one a little over a year ago and am glad that I did, once I played it I decided to get the expansions for more content. But it's not NECESSARY to have a good time with what's in the box. A comparison is the obvious Kingsburg from Fantasy Flight games, whereas that one eschews to the heavier end of the spectrum, this one tackles the same genre of general play in a lighter way TONE wise. The play is varied without as many moving parts, and the colorful and slightly more playful art style backs this up. Verdict: Get this one if you like dice rolling, have or have played Kingsburg and want a different implementation of the same theme (dice rolling city building) and or are looking for another soloable game with depth enough to be fun, without being all that thinky! Beyond the Box - Sleeves, Mats, Dice, customized. This episode: Aftermarket Insert/Storage solutions, and alternate carry methods. Quiver Broken Token Craftsman Series Larry’s GameTable by Player1_Gaming_Furniture A Deeper Look - We pick a game and do a deeper dive into the title. Not a review but speaking to the mechanics of it. Hello listeners! Dragon’s Demize is back to our old habits with a good old-fashioned review. This time, we’re reviewing Xia: Legends of a Drift System, and its expansion Embers of a Forsaken Star. Both games really live up to their space opera-inspired names. Xia is best described as a 3x game: Explore, Exploit, Exterminate. Walker encourages you to tell friends about So Very Wrong About Games, despite his not listening to the podcast. Your Board Game Alliance is back! Not that we really went anywhere, of course, but we did want to check in on The Awful Orphanage (that Kickstarter game we said we’d be monitoring) as well as get the inside scoop on the return of Fireball Island! We also spent a little time talking with the creator of one of our favorite games, Xia: Legends of a Drift System. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information. Episode 153: Cardboard Noir Length: 1:00:30 Show Links: RSS | iTunes | Stitcher | Download Episode Welcome back to Vox Republica, the Cardboard Republic Podcast! We post new episodes every other Thursday, with each episode being about 45 minutes long. Vox Republica is proudly supported by our Patreon. Consider contributing today! DESCRIPTION: This week, Erin and Ryan talk about the eclectic mix of recent games that made it to the table. Then they talk to Evan Derrick of Van Ryder Games about his new title Detective: City of Angels - a game adding a new take on an old genre! GUESTS: Evan Derrick RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (00:26): Xia: Legends of a Drift System by Far Off Games (BGG Link) Festival of Thousand Cats by Fukuroudou (BGG Link) AVES by Play With Us Design (BGG Link) FEATURED TOPIC - (18:51): In this episode's interview, we talk Detective: City of Angels with designer Evan Derrick, which has recently launched on Kickstarter. The game is a thematic take on noir…which means Erin goes on an L.A. Noire tangent almost immediately. No but really, the conversation covers Detective: City of Angels and what makes it so different compared to other one-and-done narrative-driven games, but they also discuss the role of noir in the current political climate, the way that designers balance difficulty for players of all skill levels, and how hard it is to drive in LA. PLUGS - (59:59): We’re raffling off a copy of Major General to a lucky Patreon backer. Consider donating today! As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos, Instagram pictures, and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. Subscribe to one or two - or all of them if you really love us. You do really love us, right? Episode 18, where we sail off into the black in search of fame, fortune & glory. It's Xia: Legends of a Drift System (Cody Miller) and its 2017 expansion, Embers of a Forsaken Star (Cody Miller & Ira Fay)! Published by Far Off Games, it promises a sandbox experience in space, given players the freedom to seek their fame through whatever means they wish: explore, trade, exterminate.. It's the closest we get to playing a Firefly game short of actually playing a Firefly game. Does Xia keep the signal going, or does it get lost in the black? Meanwhile, we engage in a variety of non-board game topics. Robert's been creating his idyllic city in Cities: Skylines while learning about hydroelectric dam physics, Judy's been watching a time-travelling crime drama, Signal, and reading the Decameron (which is soft-of kind-of getting a movie), and Joe's creating a house run by Skynet, all thanks to Amazon Prime Day. We look forward to our future roomba overlords. Adam, Chad and Ryan highlight some of their favourite licensed games (games based on existing TV, Movie, Book, or Video Game franchises) and highlight the pros and cons of piggybacking on an existing IP. Speaking of which, we talk about Gears of War, Chad does his best to defend Xia: Legends of a Drift System from Ryan and loses, and then Chad hunts down Adam in Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space

In this special episode of The Long View, I'm thrilled to be joined by both Joel Eddy and TC Petty III as we dive into and explore dice games! What makes them so popular in board game design nowadays? What was the inspiration behind the design of TC's VivaJava: The Coffee Game: The Dice Game? Why the sudden proliferation of dice game versions of board games? Tune in and find out! As a production note, we have a slight echo from time to time in the first 20 minutes. We were eventually able to correct it, but some is still there. I did not want to delete those portions due to a slight echo, so I have left them in and ask for your patience. Thank You! As a bonus, I review two new titles. First up is Xia: Legends of a Drift System. Is this the ultimate space game sandbox? What can you expect from this intriguing design? Does it deliver thematic punch? These questions and more are answered in this review of this intriguing title. Finally, I review the surprising Paperback. Is this a word game even word game haters will love? Is it just a Dominin clone, or does it offer something new? Listen and find out if fun is in the acceptable word dictionary for Paperback!
