Eppure, l'idea di unità europea ha una storia lunga, complessa e costellata di tentativi, sogni e fallimenti. Franco Cardini e Sergio Valzania ripercorrono con rigore e chiarezza i momenti cruciali in cui si è cercato di arrivare a una coesione politica e culturale del continente. Ich glaube, alle, die 2010 schon alt genug waren, um fernzusehen, wissen, wer mein heutiger Gast ist. Ich hätte das einen Unfall genannt, Samuel benutzt aber ein anderes Wort für den Moment, durch den er heute querschnittsgelähmt ist und im Rollstuhl sitzt. Welches, das hört ihr gleich – und das war nur einer von vielen Aspekten, die mich in diesem Gespräch überrascht und zum Nachdenken gebracht haben. Wir haben auch darüber gesprochen, wie oft er schon mit seinem Rollstuhl geblitzt wurde und warum er andere Länder - von denen ich es gar nicht erwartet hätte - viel barrierefreier wahrnimmt als Deutschland. Es ging darum, wem Samuel die Lizenz zum Arschtritt erteilt hat und warum man sich seiner Meinung nach auf Gefühle wenig verlassen kann. Und wir haben über die Kunst gesprochen. Denn entgegen zahlreichen Widerständen hat Samuel nach dem Schicksalsschlag seine Schauspielausbildung beendet. Er hat mehrere Bücher geschrieben, tritt als Redner auf und ist als Schauspieler im Fernsehen und Theater zu sehen. An den Münchner Kammerspielen probt er gerade ein Stück von Friedrich Schiller, in dem er die Hauptrolle spielen wird – und genau da hab ich ihn auch getroffen. Prior to joining Syngenta in 2022, he was a professor and department head of Soil and Crop Sciences at Colorado State University. His research focused on how the soil microbiome interacts with plants and the environment. He also co-founded a startup called Growcentia, which commercialized a phosphorus solubilizing microbial consortia developed in his academic lab and went on to develop other biostimulants. A cool connection there is one of Matt's co-founders at Growcentia was actually on this show five years ago. I didn't know Matt at the time so that's more of a coincidence than anything else, but that's episode 165 if you want to find that deep track. Renowned Israeli Military historian Martin Van Creveld explains to Disorder listeners how certain essential elements of warfare have remained constant overtime. These continuities have been frequently overlooked in the sensationalizing media coverage of the wars in Gaza and Ukraine.    In major interstate warfare, the defense retains its traditional advantages just as it did when Carl von Clausewitz penned his famous ‘On War'; in counter insurgency warfare separating insurgents from the shelter they receive from the local population remains as complex as when Mao Tze Dong wrote his ‘On Guerrilla Warfare'; and maintaining deterrence vis a vis one's adversaries remains just as important as when Theodore Roosevelt suggested at the Minnesota State Fair in 1901 that one should ‘speak softly, and carry a big stick.'     Drawing on his extensive research over decades, Martin presents a rare treat for Disorder listeners sharing his theories on deterrence, the imitative nature of war, what makes people willing to fight and die, the tragedy of the Palestinians, propaganda in War, and what can be done to help Israelis and Palestinians understand each other's narratives better. Considering the enormous amount of men under recruitment, their army sizes were somewhat small, but that didn't make the battle any less ferocious. Indeed, Lutzen can be viewed as a turning point, not merely in the conflict here, but also in early modern warfare. With Breitenfeld changing the balance of power in the Empire, Gustavus had much to do as 1631 became 1632. First was the matter of Count Tilly's battered survivors from the battle, who had since been reinforced, and guarded the entrance to Bavaria. But over the horizon was an even greater threat to the Swedish King - Albrecht of Wallenstein, the Holy Roman Emperor's last hope. The two titans faced off throughout the summer of 1632, with dramatic (and disgusting) results. The Battle of Breitenfeld was a turning point in the Thirty Years War, but equally important was what Gustavus Adolphus chose to do after. In his race to conquer, Gustavus tore down the Rhine, seizing a wide range of cities, from Wurzburg, to Mainz, to Frankfurt. In the process, he upset the contract between the Emperor and his subjects like never before, demanding an answer which would come from Wallenstein in 1632. More depressingly for the average German, Gustavus swollen army of 80,000 was just as big a problem as Wallenstein's had once been.
