President Putin has only been able to sustain his war by bribing the poor, desperate and marginalised. The deal has been straightforward: sign up and you will be paid a fabulous lump sum and generous salary. You will receive benefits and a veteran's pension. In the event of your death your family will be compensated. A surprising majority believe they are signing one-year contracts and are unaware that service is indefinite until the end of the war. Even when told they still sign on, taking the gamble that the war will be over soon and anxious not to miss out on a get-rich-quick scheme. Just five percent of volunteers have a higher education and 40% are 50-year olds and older (last year the recruitment age was increased to 70 years-of-age, and the oldest recorded death has been a 72 year-old). The sums offered are stupendous. The one-time signing on bonus in Nizhny Novgorod can be as high as 3 million roubles ($38,300). Impoverished Bashkortostan - which has suffered the most war losses with over 3,100 confirmed volunteer deaths - offers 1.5 million roubles. 'You'll earn 3.7 million roubles [$44,000] your first year!' shouts an advertisement in Novosibirsk. Who wants to be a millionaire? The reality, naturally, is different and the subject of this article. The reality of life in occupied Ukraine A volunteer may earn a monthly salary of between 200,000-300,000 roubles $2,550-$3,800). This is many times higher than the average Russian salary and unimaginable in the poorer regions of Russia. Yet the soldiers are not kings of the castle. The costs of serving in occupied Ukraine swallow salaries. Some of those costs are itemised below: Food: Soldiers have to supplement inadequate rations by buying their own food. Locals routinely double and triple prices to Russian soldiers because they know they can pay. A monthly bill can run to 20,000-30,000 roubles ($255-$380). In one unusual case, a Russian soldier serving in 68 Motor Rifle Division on the Kupyansk front saved on food money by turning cannibal and eating a dead comrade. Reportedly this provided him with sufficient meat for two weeks. Water: Occupied Donbas is a water disaster area with daily rationing and water cuts. Tap water - when it runs - is undrinkable ('you cannot even wash in it', one soldier has averred). A daily five litres of water costs 100-150 roubles, or around $38-$57 per month. Sex: The Donbas has been transformed by a sex industry chasing roubles. As much as 500,000 roubles ($6,380) can be earned in week. Roughly one third of prostitutes work from stationary brothels and the remainder do 'shift work', or two-week shifts in rented houses in Mariupol, Berdyansk, Melitopol, Donetsk and Luhansk. A chat with a prostitute can cost 15,000 roubles ($190). One night costs 120,000 roubles ($1,530). Payments are in cash. 'It seems to me that 90% of my clients feel regret [about joining the war],' one prostitute has opined. Another has said that every second order she gets is 'just to sit down and talk, because they don't see anything there except men and corpses.' Cigarettes: The issue cigarettes are unsmokable and thrown away. Cigarettes are sold at inflated prices in the Donbas (around 200 roubles or $2.50 per packet) and are smoked apace. Roughly half of all Russian males smoke, one of the highest rates in the world. Smoking in the army is widespread. Alcohol: There are no numbers for alcohol consumption. There is abundant anecdotal evidence that the high alcohol consumption rates of Russian civilian society - and alcoholism - have been exported to the frontline. Indeed, some volunteer to get their lives in order, having lost control to alcohol in their home towns and villages. Clothing: Soldiers invariably resort to buying their own uniforms, especially cold weather clothing. There are mobile 'uniform shops' operating in the Donbas. They can charge as much as 10,000 roubles for a uniform ($125), or twice the going rate in a shop in 'the mainland' (it is telling th...

"Des financements communs massifs seront décidés pour acheter et produire sur le sol européen des munitions, des chars, des armes, des équipements parmi les plus innovants", avait expliqué mercredi soir lors de son allocution télévisée Emmanuel Macron qui veut aller plus loin. Le chef de l'Etat défend également l'idée d'un grand emprunt commun et s'est dit prêt à l'ouverture d'un débat stratégique sur l'extension de la dissuasion nucléaire de la France aux pays de l'UE. Un sujet qui fait couler beaucoup d'encre et a suscité de vives réactions à Moscou et Washington. They started a business, running two restaurants, popular with their neighbours for special occasions. The first Sevastopol Sketch focuses on December of 1854. Sevastopol is a name of Greek origin and is a well-known port city in Crimea. Before it was Ukrainian -- and before it was Russian or under Russian occupation -- it was part of the Crimean Khanate, heavily influenced by the Ottomans. Greek names were stamped on conquered cities just north of the Black Sea (think also Melitopol, Mariupol, and Kherson) by Czars & Czarinas as a show of respect for Greek culture. Notably, Greeks had a presence there going back thousands of years.The first Sketch focuses on a sunrise to sunset amidst the Siege. We take in Sevastopol through the perspective of an officer and get closer to the infamous bastions as the day goes on. Around 8 a.m., you (the officer) take notice of the rising sun above Sapun Ridge, which rises 240 meters.  There is a changing of the guard, a soldier washing his face in frigid water, as well as doctors and nurses reporting to their stations. Life gets moving amidst the backdrop of death, which you can observe through wagons transporting the departed.   You traverse a muddy beach, passing over a dead horse, and get into a small boat pulled by an old man and boy.  The vessel sails around a disabled warship and soon reaches a wharf near the city center.  Sevastopol remains a traditional city but has also become a war encampment.   The surface bears the scars of cannon fire. There is a bustle – smoking, chatting, gambling and arguing.   You take in: Cossacks with their horses, women with their children, and trades-folk.  All their faces express enthusiasm in carrying on. Nobody is paralyzed by fear.  Most importantly, you approach the Sevastopol Assembly Hall, which is serving as a hospital. You enter to the sights, sounds and smell of the wounded. Some are in hammocks, but the majority are on the floor. You are overcome through absorbing the pervasive suffering. You address a few of the men and they respond to your empathy. You meet one who lost his leg, who graciously thanks God that he will get his discharge. He tells you that it is best not to dwell.  You come across housewives, one visiting her husband and another who was severely wounded while delivering food to her husband. You come across a blonde man with swollen face and labored breathing who is near death. You sense his internal fire of pain. You see an old gaunt solder changing his clothes.  His body displays a lifetime of hardship. You can't find words to convey your admiration.You take in the horrors of the operating area.  Sleepless doctors are at work administering chloroform and hacking limbs.   You see repeated -- the placing a sharp curved knife into a healthy part of the body and the men coming to with piercing cries. What follows is an arm or leg being thrown onto a pile.  The men in queue for such treatment obsess over the terror that lies ahead.    Tolstoy's point is that such is the reality of War, not the music and drum beats and gallantry, and waving flags. This is the grim nature of suffering and death.  You leave and head to an actual bastion.  You reflect on what you observed and grasp your insignificance.  You take a moment to behold the majestic sky -- The Lord's sky. For any War & Peace reader, this scene bring to mind Andrei on the field of Austerlitz, gazing from the grass at the brilliant sky. Your mind soars above the fine city with a lovely church; and Your mind is restored.

Washington and Kiev had disagreements over strategy, tactics, and timing during the conflict. While Ukraine wanted to attack Berdyansk and Bakhmut/Artyomovsk, the US preferred a focused assault on Melitopol. The Ukrainian leadership initially requested over 1,000 armored vehicles but received 1,500, some of which were criticized as unfit for combat. The US had to secure 155mm artillery shells from South Korea and couldn't fulfill Ukraine's request for F-16 fighter jets due to cost concerns and vulnerability to Russian air defenses.

Southern Ukraine has been hit by strikes from both sides in the war, with Russia launching drones at targets in Odesa and Kyiv fighting back in Melitopol. Since October, Moscow has been targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Russian persecution of Ukrainian churches and pastors Protestant churches and pastors are facing persecution in Russian-controlled regions of Ukraine. Over the last month, Russian troops have shut down the three largest Protestant churches in Melitopol as well as churches in Mariupol. Masked soldiers also detained Baptist Pastor Leonid Ponomaryov and his wife Tatyana of Kurchatov Church in Mariupol. In the Luhansk region, leaders of six Protestant churches were forced to flee from the city of Lysychansk. Paul Robinson with Release International said, “We are seeing churches raided, sealed and shut down, and the disappearance and detention of pastors in the occupied areas . . . Yet the message of history should be clear to Russia: the Christian faith has survived 70 years of Soviet totalitarian rule . . . Persecution can only strengthen the church.” Middle Eastern and North African Christians in World Evangelical Alliance At the end of last month, the Middle Eastern and North African Evangelical National Councils held their most representative event since it started in 2018. It's the newest branch of the World Evangelical Alliance. Some evangelical leaders, like those in Egypt, report growth under new government recognition, while others, like those in Iraq, report continued repression. Many Evangelical refugees from countries like Iraq are building communities in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Delegates at the meeting represented some 600 million Evangelicals across the Middle East and northern Africa. Speaking of Christ, Isaiah 9:7 says, “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.” West Virginia Supreme Court: Tax dollars allowed for private, Christian, & homeschool Last Thursday, the West Virginia Supreme Court upheld the state's Hope Scholarship Act. The 2021 act offered funds for students to use at private school, faith-based school, and homeschool.  State Treasurer Riley Moore said, “This is a victory for West Virginian families over the out-of-state trial lawyers and liberal activists who are trying to block educational freedom and school choice for the children of our state.” Tulsi Gabbard, former Democratic presidential candidate, leaves Democrat Party Tulsi Gabbard, the former congresswoman from Hawaii and 2020 Democrat presidential candidate, announced Tuesday she is leaving her party. The former rising Democrat star posted her reasons for leaving on Twitter and called on others to join her. GABBARD: “I can no longer remain in today's Democratic Party that's under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers, who are driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue and stoking anti-white racism, who actively worked to undermine our God-given freedoms that are enshrined in our Constitution, who are hostile to people of faith and spirituality, who demonize the police, but protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, who believe in open borders, who weaponize the national security state to go after their political opponents.” Remarkably, 8.3 million people have viewed her video. Perhaps her exit from the Democrat Party will inspire Democrats, who share her sense of abandonment, to leave the Democrat Party in advance of the mid-term election. Biden's FBI targets pro-life Christians Speaking of weaponizing the national security state, as Gabbard did, the FBI and Department of Justice continue to hunt down Christian pro-life activists.  Last Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced charges against eleven people in connection with a peaceful protest outside an abortion mill in Tennessee last year. This comes within weeks of the FBI arresting pro-life activist Mark Houck at his home in Pennsylvania. One of the recently arrested Christians was Paul Vaughn who is married with 11 children. Vaughn told the Daily Signal that FBI agents raided his home in Tennessee last week with “guns pointed at the door, banging on the house, yelling and screaming, ‘Open up. FBI.'” Appearing on Fox News with Tucker Carlson, Vaughn compared the arrest to the persecution the church has often received from tyrants. VAUGHN: “As a Christian family, we do a lot of studying about historic Christianity and missionaries in the past and persecution that has happened in the church. So, they're familiar with stories. They know there are people who've been martyred throughout history. They know they've been persecuted and, and picked on by bully tyrants in other parts of history just like they are being in America today.” What's especially galling about Paul Vaughn's case is that he wasn't even arrested for trespassing on the day of the protest in front of the abortion mill. Matthew 5:10 says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Study: 70% of pastors say giving at or exceeded budget And finally, Lifeway Research released a new survey on how the economy is affecting churches. Fifty-two percent of U.S. Protestant pastors say the current economy is having a negative impact on their churches. Nevertheless, 70% of pastors say giving at their church this year is at or exceeding their budget. Although smaller congregations recovered to pre-pandemic attendance levels more quickly, they are more likely to report financial struggles in the face of rising prices. Russia's invasion of Ukraine grinds on into its third brutal month, with no end in sight. But, in ways large and small, the conflict has shifted. At the start of the war, the Russian military hoped to seize Kyiv and decapitate the Ukrainian government—but then quickly retreated in the face of sustained resistance. The fiercest fighting is now in the eastern Donbas region, but Russian troops have also occupied the southern Ukrainian city of Melitopol since February, upending civilian life in other ways. The New Yorker contributing writer Joshua Yaffa, formerly the magazine's Moscow correspondent, has been reporting from Ukraine throughout the war. He spoke to the guest host Susan Glasser from Kyiv about the state of the conflict. “This is a war against the totality of a country, against the totality of a people, and, even if there is a moment of relative peace in the capital, that doesn't mean that Russia's aims have in any way narrowed in their ambition, narrowed in their scope,” Yaffa says. “And if Russia is able to cleave off the Donbas, as seems to be its major or central military goal at the moment, that doesn't mean the war ends there.”

A senior U.S. defense official tells CNN that Russian forces have launched “more than 1,080 missiles” since the beginning of their invasion. Ukraine's military says six missiles were fired at Lviv, the western city near Poland's border that has been relatively untouched. Retired Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling tells AC360 this is likely to become a battle of the “will of the two sides” and how much damage they can sustain until they give up. Plus, the mayor of Melitopol was detained by armed men in the Russian-occupied city on March 11. Mayor Ivan Fedorov joins AC360 days after being rescued by the Ukrainian government to discuss his abduction and says if Ukraine doesn't win this war, Russia will attack Europe and the rest of the world.
