Our bodies need energy and we get that from the food we eat. No surprise, right? But, what is the gatekeeper between food consumption and the energy needed for athletic performance? It’s your gut – especially the gut flora. EPISODE SCRIPT There are millions and millions of bacteria in your gut – in fact, there are ten times more bacteria than cells in your gut. Ten times! What are these flora doing in addition to processing food? They can identify pathogens (dangerous compounds) Bolster and improve the health of the intestines Promote the growth of new cells What happens to athletes when the gut isn’t working well? It gets in the way of performance, recovery and long-term health and sustainability of athletic performance at a high level like competition. To be more specific, there’s a cascading effect that starts very small but ends up degrading your abilities to do what you want to do in the gym, at a race or in any competitive setting. It starts with: Too few interferons in your gut. Interferons (a type on immune cell in your body) are they’re released from cells in your gut and are important in helping to fight viruses. A healthy gut microbiome supports interferons. An unhealthy gut means fewer interferons and that can hurt your immune system. With that, the possibility of catching cold and suffering from other viruses increases. If your immune system is stressed, your body’s ability to repair the kind of inflammation that often comes with strenuous exercise is impaired. This can lead to an increased possibility of increasing the injuries sustained during training. Your digestion is also compromised, thus reducing the efficiency of processing nutrients for energy. If this continues, you’ll probably not be able to improve and sustain the kind of athletic performance we Spartans are aiming for. Luckily, it’s relatively easy to keep your gut healthy. First, eat healthy. We all know this, but don’t cut corners if you’re exercising at a high level. The difference between good performance and great performance can sometimes be very small – so you need to be disciplined if you’ve set ambitious goals for yourself. Give your gut what it wants. Probiotic supplements are very helpful. Yogurt is a common source of friendly bacteria. Many specialized probiotic supplements are very helpful, too. Some other options might be fermented foods, like sauerkraut. As we’re exercising, our gut normally performs silently and behind the scenes. That’s how you want to keep it because it usually draws our attention after something has gone wrong. Support you gut with good eating habits and you’ll keep your performance at a high level. KEY TERMS & IDEAS Gut health is key to thwarting viruses, processing food for energy and repairing the damage of inflammation. Keeping the gut healthy is relatively simple. It’s worth it because the gut and especially gut flora provide a necessary foundation for your health. Gut flora. “Bacteria and other organisms that live inside the intestines. They help digest food. Vitamins such as biotin and vitamin K are made by gut flora. Also called gut microflora, intestinal flora, intestinal microflora, and microflora.” (National Cancer Institute) Probiotics. “Probiotics are living microorganisms that, when ingested, provide numerous health benefits.” (Healthline)   LINKS & RESOURCES: Follow Dr. Nada on: Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/nada-milo... Join us with our guest Alex Huang, founder of Quellthera, will discuss the new science that is revealing how incredibly smart and adaptable bacteria are. Our human microbiome and immune system have immensely complex interactions that have evolved over millions of years. The rapid immune response of living plant cells has shown us a strategy for stopping the attack of harmful bacteria without causing collateral damage to beneficial microflora. This reaction is also part of the human evolutionary diet and, unlike antibiotics, simultaneously moderates toxin assaults, intestinal vulnerability and inflammatory responses. Modern methods are finally enabling us to understand processes such as quorum sensing and other molecular interactions that pave the way to new medicines that can effectively address infections like C. diff. without promoting superbugs

This is episode number 99. I'd already purchased a book for the big one hundred, but I've decided to call it quits, again, with this one. I hate to say goodbye. I love podcasting, meeting fascinating authors and introducing people to the first chapters of great books. But, I'm not getting the feedback to keep going. It got harder and harder to get authors to interview. I'm not sure why that was, if it was their fear of being interviewed, or my self doubts about whether they would really want to be on the podcast. Maybe I should have been more assertive. In addition, subscriptions and downloads have decreased steadily over the last two months. With the podcast taking up half of the creative time I have each week, I think I should focus on getting some of my novels edited and published. If you're interested in finding out what I'm working on, you can find me at PhilipCarrollAuthor.com, on facebook at Philip Carroll Author, or you can contact me directly at norvaljoe@gmail.com This weeks episode is: Turtles all the way down by John Green, author of "The Fault in Our Stars" and other very popular novels. I chose this one because it was chosen as the number 2 Reader's choice on Goodreads for Young Adult Fiction. It was 7,000 votes behind number one (The Hate U Give) with at 52K and a whole 30,000 ahead of number 3 "One of Us is Lying" which I reviewed a few months ago. https://www.amazon.com/Turtles-All-Down-John-Green/dp/0525555366/ref=pd_rhf_pe_p_img_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=55XNSMP6GS3RM1ZMNG63 It has 4.5 star average on 695 reviews on Amazon. It was published on Oct 10, 2017 by Dutton Books for Young Readers Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #155 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #2 in Books > Teens > Literature & Fiction > Coming of Age #2 in Books > Teens > Literature & Fiction > Social & Family Issues > Depression & Mental Illness #2 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Mental Health > Anxiety Disorders Here's the blurb: Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis. Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts. In his long-awaited return, John Green, the acclaimed, award-winning author of Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars, shares Aza’s story with shattering, unflinching clarity in this brilliant novel of love, resilience, and the power of lifelong friendship. The Amazon preview has the first chapter and a bit of the second. I'm going to read you all that is included: (read) John Green creates an intricate voice in the thoughts of Aza. I can see why he is so popular. He's created Aza to be witty, thoughtful and self reflective, just as teenagers would like to picture themselves. Probably more witty and self reflective than any actual teenager, but it makes for a fascinating character in a book. Aza really worries about her microflora and feels outnumbered. If she was truly thoughtful and maybe a little more analytical, she would realize she's only outnumbered by count, not by volume. By volume, the aliens are way outnumbered. But, that's not the point. The point is her anxiety. Her anxiety appears entertaining. Maybe Green is using it as a gimmick, maybe he is truly concerned about teens and their anxieties. My teenage daughter has crushing anxiety that shuts her down in class, but she doesn't bounce out of it with witting interchanges with classmates. These first two chapters barely introduce us to the story and if it wasn't for the blurb, this little bit that I read would hardly motivate you to read on. But add the blurb to the author's immaculate writing and immersive style and you're pretty much guaranteed a good read in, "Turtles All the Way Down". Thanks for listening, and I'll miss hanging out with you next week.

It was a long and winding journey to her health and her business "Eating for Health." Prior to health coaching, Staci worked in all aspects of the health food business, from internships on family farms, cooking in cafes and farm-to-table restaurants. In 2011, she opened an organic grocery store that connects the consumer to the farmer. She has studied the Functional approach to nutrition, a somewhat new school of thought that is making great strides in health care at a time when it couldn't be more needed. Staci does not have a medical degree, but feels she has a lot of experience to offer due to her studies with one of the best nutritionists in the world. She never diagnoses, treats, or prescribes diets. Her role is an educator and support person. You should always do your own research and consult with a trusted healthcare provider when making changes to your diet. Staci suggests three key elements when working on the gut microbiome: 1. Eating fermented foods. All Things Food in Bryan, Ohio sells excellent quality organic locally-made ferments by Wild Brine. 2. Bone broth at least twice a week. 3. Exposure to environments rich in microorganisms such as farms has been shown to protect against the development of childhood asthma and allergies. However, it remains unclear where, and how, farm and other rural children are exposed to microbes. Furthermore, the composition of the microbial flora is poorly characterised. We tested the hypothesis that farm children are exposed indoors to substantial levels of viable microbes originating from animal sheds and barns. We also expected that environmental microbial flora on farms and in farm homes would be more complex than in the homes of rural control children.
