This is probably the wildest episode yet. Truly. We get pretty raw about all things poop-related. It's even hard to type.....such a taboo subject! Alanna and Nicole are joined by Megan Marsiglio -- a mom, wife, entrepreneur, gut health advocate, and along with Nicole, a fellow Crohn-y. This episode gets real down and dirty! For years, Megan felt extremely isolated and humiliated about having a digestive issue - feeling like she was the only person who was anxious about making it to the bathroom "in time." As she slowly began opening up about her Crohn's Disease and what she was dealing with, she discovered how many others dealt with the same issues, and how many kept it to themselves due to embarrassment. It was then that she realized she had to do something to increase the conversation and push awareness - and became the founder of The Gut Gazette. In this episode we chat about bathroom anxiety when it comes to going at the workplace, when you're dating, when you're driving on a highway and have GOT TO GO NOW, etc. We even cross the lines of pooping your pants. This episode is not for the faint of heart, BUT it is so incredibly important to realize our bodies NEED to poop to survive and it should be something that is celebrated and not frowned upon! Episode 22:20 Your Disease Is NOT The Problem On last week's episode we talked about the ONE mistake every medical doctor makes: They focus their attention solely on treating symptoms and diseases without trying to identify and correct their CAUSE. The reason this is a mistake is simple: Treating symptoms does NOT help your body heal. Healing only comes from identifying and eliminating the CAUSE of your symptoms. On this episode we dive deeper into this very important topic. Specifically, we share how your disease is NOT the problem. Instead, your disease is simply the "signalling system" your body uses to let you know that there IS a problem... an underlying CAUSE to your symptoms and disease. Unfortunately, most doctors ignore this and limit their scope of practice to the treatment of symptoms. This does you, the patient, an injustice. On this week's episode we also share how, if you're struggling to discover the cure to a condition, you MUST find a doctor who will work with you on identifying and eliminating the CAUSE. Why? Because, without addressing the CAUSE, there's a good chance your body will not heal! A good example of this - one we talk about on the episode - is the treatment of High Blood Pressure. As you know, the typical patient with High Blood Pressure is simply given drugs. - Drugs that will only "mask" the problem. - Drugs they will have to take for the rest of their life. - Drugs that come with several negative side-effects. - Drugs that will do nothing to provide a cure! That is, although drugs can lower a person's blood pressure numbers, they will do NOTHING to correct the CAUSE of High Blood Pressure. As a result, the underlying problems that are CAUSING the High Blood Pressure will persist and continue to do harm to the person's body. Unfortunately, this problem is NOT limited to the treatment of High Blood Pressure. It applies to nearly ALL chronic conditions! That is, in nearly ALL chronic conditions - High Blood Pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, Fatigue, Headaches, Digestive Disorders, Alzheimer's, and Arthritis - drugs are prescribed to deal with the SYMPTOMS, while the CAUSE goes unaddressed. This has to stop! How? On this episode we lay the foundation for doing just that... and set the stage for our next two episodes: One which will discuss the idea of using Natural Solutions (as opposed to drugs) for treating chronic conditions. The other for sharing the three primary CAUSES behind nearly all chronic conditions. Give this episode a good listen as the information will change how you view your symptoms… and how you view your doctors! Also, be sure to share this episode with a friend. Digestive diseases and disorders are increasingly becoming commonplace in the world. Things like GERD, Celiac, Crohn's and the ever so common IBS are issues where the gastrointestinal system is dealing with inflammation or bacterial overgrowth. While these conditions range from mild to severe, it can be really tough to face a diagnosis and learn how to eat and nourish their bodies moving forward. In today's episode I am talking to Elyse Resch, a RDN and a nutrition therapist in private practice in Beverly Hills with over thirty-seven years of experience. She helps her client navigate restrictive eating patterns and practice more mindful eating habits. During our conversation Elyse shares her own experience with restrictive eating, infertility and retraining her mindset about food and nutrition. She talks about the intuitive eating framework, misconceptions about this practice, why nourishing your body means you're nourishing your brain and the role diet culture plays in food preference. In this episode, we cover: Elyse shares why she decided to specialize in intuitive eating and digestive disorders [2:37] What is the intuitive eating framework and some of the misconceptions around this practice [11:59] Our brains can't work if we aren't nourishing ourselves and why serotonin matters [23:56] Does aversion to certain food come from diet culture or genuine harm to your body? [30:11] Food neutrality and reflection in intuitive eating [37:43] What does hunger actually mean [48:40] Today's episode is sponsored by Seed. Their signature product, the DS-01™ Daily Synbiotic, is a combination of science-backed probiotic strains and prebiotics that work in synergy to promote healthy digestion, ease of bloating, glowing skin, and more. [include file=get-in-itunes.html] Today we had the honor of talking to a new friend called Kit Campbell. Kate always makes fun of me for using the word called instead of named. It must be the Aussie in me. ;) We had been going back and forth with Kit for a few months trying to work out a good date and time to coordinate a show. The time change from Tasmania to California gave us some challenges so it was finally a lot of fun to connect with Kit. She had been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease 40 years ago and has an incredible story of healing from all manner of digestive diseases. As we all know the name of the game is digestion. If you are able to digest, absorb and assimilate your food properly there's a very high chance you'll be disease free most of your life. It has been said that all disease begins in the colon. Because of our less than excellent diets of processed foods, factory farmed meats and chemicals, is it no wonder we have more digestive stress now more than ever? The conversation with Kit took a strange yet great turn. We ended up talking a lot about how the mind and our thoughts change reality and how energy and emotion can literally change our digestion and life. We got into lots of fun stuff with Kit Campbell. She's the author of a book called The Irritable Brain Syndrome and has a lot of fascinating information to share regarding not only her journey of healing but also some common sense approaches to healing the gut. Sontina struggled with pain and inflammation all over her body for years. It began with a diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis which she poorly managed with a plant based diet. She also struggled with digestive disorders that required daily use of fiber and laxatives. Two years of a vegan diet just took things from bad to worse. When she finally went carnivore, the pain and inflammation from the arthritis and her gut finally calmed enough for her to live pain free. She's seen numerous other benefits to carnivore like hair regrowth, cystic acne reversal, and an end to cravings. Listen to this interview to hear more of her amazing story.
