What began as "Russian Mountains" evolved across Europe, and eventually, found their way to the good ol' U.S. of A... In 1884, one man wanted to use his vast fortune--NO! Not to help anyone!--to keep a recently re-unioned American population from getting too drunk, too horny, and too gambly... So he built himself a roller coaster, and with it, he made even more money (which he did not share), but at least he gave us all the gift of post-mule speeds, and the exhilaration that comes with it! What parachute types are there? Do you think you know what a parachute looks like? Guess what: There are tons of parachute types out there, and you probably don't know 'em all! Here's a rundown of several of the normal and not-so-normal types of parachutes that help skydivers (and far-flung cargo) make their way softly back down to terra firma.1. ROUND PARACHUTESRound parachutes were the first tools for fabric descent. If your mental image of a parachute involves a big, inverted pouch of fabric suspended over a helpless jumper, then it's a round parachute you're thinking of. Round parachutes served a purpose for a very long time (and still do, in some very specific circumstances), but there were a few issues with this design that caused them to eventually fade from regular use. First off: They're (gulp!) unsteerable. Secondly, they're (double gulp!) not super-likely to land lightly.2. CRUCIFORM PARACHUTESCruciform parachutes can be seen as kinda-sorta a subset of round parachutes. They're not round, per se, but they're certainly not the square modern parachutes we use for most purposes today. The difference is this: their squared-off profile decreases oscillation and ends up resulting in fewer landing injury rates for the jumpers and cargo that dangle helplessly below. The bump at the end is about 25% softer than the cruciform's rounder cousin, but it's still nowhere near as good an idea as the modern skydiving parachute, so this one also stays firmly in the military world.3. ROGALLO WINGSYou'll pretty much never see a rogallo parachute in the sport skydiving world — but you just might see one in paragliding, where they're commonly used as rescue parachutes. The wing design is highly recognizable: two partial conic surfaces with both cones pointing forward, vaguely triangular or hang-glidery in appearance. Springy and flexible, the Rogallo wing is most often seen in toy kites, but has been used to construct descent parachutes for spacecraft, as well as provide an airfoil for ultralight powered aircraft like trikes.4. RAM AIR PARACHUTESSo what are you most likely to see on a skydiving dropzone? Far and away, you'll be looking at the venerable ram air parachute. As a matter of fact, just about everyone in the sky today uses ram air canopies to get down. You'll recognize them instantly: a square or rectangular fabric wing, wherein a top and bottom sheet of nylon are attached by a set of fabric ribs between them. That's the magic, right there: The ribs divide the parachute into a set of individual cells that inflate when fast-moving air is pushed in through the front, and inflates the parachute all the way to the back. When that inflation happens, the wing inflates to the point that it becomes a steerable airfoil. Bingo! A stable flying machine that slows you down, steers like a dream and “flares” to land you as softly as a pretty little fairy princess. My thanks to the folks at Long Island Skydiving for permission to share this information. Earlier this week I had a passionate chat with good friends; Zacca Newman and Chris Armstrong, hosts of the; ‘Better with Running Podcast' and acclaimed Run2PB running coaches. We discuss the tendency for runners to fall prey to ‘binary bias' or ‘black and white thinking'. We often over-simplify; running, life and the human body, for the ease of understanding. Rather than viewing things as a complex inter-related set of relationships that are ever changing. Shades of grey are hard to sit with, we get uncomfortable with not knowing and being uncertain. We are after the magic pill, that fixes/solves everything and everyone. The human body is more complex than this. Yes, we all know the pillars to optimizing human performance are a subtle interplay of; physical exercise/ sleep/ recovery/ nutrition and mental well being… but it's the application of all of the above to the ‘individual' in front of you, that carries all the conjecture. When ‘binary bias' thinking is ‘self serving' life is all merry. Life is easier to digest, we are improving or getting better, it all makes sense. Where it gets tricky is when your ‘black and white' thinking about a certain training method is no longer ‘serving you.' It is hard to be ‘open' in these moments, to be less attached to a certain method/behaviour that has served you so well in the past. We finish the chat by talking about a topic all three of us are particularly passionate about:…. The lost art of listening to your body? And the concept that anything that can be objectively seen in numbers is biased as a metric these days in training…Watch aside, lets get better at ‘tuning our internal dials'…'How did you feel across the ground? How was your rhythm? How was your timing? Did you feel strong? Fresh? Springy? Snappy? Sluggish? Fatigued? Tired? Heavy? Sore? Unmotivated? Raring to go? Excited?

This week, Editor-in-Chief Elliot Williams and Assignments Editor Kristina Panos traded sweat for silence, recording from their respective attic-level offices in the August heat unaided by fans (too noisy). We decided there's no real news this week that lacks a political bent, except maybe that Winamp is back with a new version that's four years in the making. (Is Winamp divisive?) Does it still whip the llama's ass? You be the judge. After Elliot gives Kristina a brief math lesson in increasing area with regard to 3D printer nozzle sizes, we talk a bit about 3D pens, drool over a truly customizable macropad that uses a microcontroller for each keyswitch, and  discuss dendrometers and tree health. Then it's back to keyboards for one incredible modular build with an e-ink display and haptic feedback knob which is soon to go open source. Finally, we talk tiny CRTs, a USB drive that must have the ultimate in security through obscurity, discuss the merits of retrograde clocks, and wonder aloud about the utility of jumping PCBs. Don't bounce on us just yet -- not until you hear about our first electronics wins and learn the one thing Kristina doesn't do when she's spending all day in the heat.
