This week on BETA, hip-hop historian Nadirah Simmons highlights the game-changing ladies that made history in pop music. And one of crime fiction's greatest writers, George Pelecanos, talks aout his most autobiographical work yet. And journalist Daniel de Visé on the history of The Blues Brothers.
This enlightening book reframes the history of hip-hop—and this time, women are given credit for all their trailblazing achievements that have left an undeniable impact on music. First Things First: Hip-Hop Ladies Who Changed the Game (Twelve, 2024), hip-hop is not just the music, and women have played a big role in shaping the way it looks today. First Things First takes readers on a journey through some notable firsts by women in hip-hop history and their importance. Factual firsts like Queen Latifah becoming the first rapper to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Lauryn Hill making history as the first rapper to win the coveted Album of the Year Award at the GRAMMYs, April Walker being the first woman to dominate in the hip-hop fashion game, and Da Brat being the first solo woman rapper to have an album go platinum, and metaphorical firsts like Missy Elliott being the first woman rapper to go to the future. (Trust me, she really did.) There are chapters on music legends like Nicki Minaj, Lil' Kim and Mary J. Blige, tv and radio hosts like Big Lez and Angie Martinez, and so many more ladies I would name but I don't want to spoil the book! There are games, charts and some fire images, too. Altogether, First Things First is a celebration of the achievements of women in hip-hop who broke down barriers and broke the mold. So the next time someone doesn't have their facts straight on the ladies in hip-hop, you can hit them with “first things first”… Learn more about your ad choices. Hey, sis! Long time, no talk. I took a summer sabbatical, which wasn't intended to go beyond September. But I'm back today with a special pop-up episode. As we go into another year, let's not just examine our financial, physical or career goals. Albeit those are important, we also need to look at other areas of our lives. Mental health. Prioritizing our time. Making rest a necessity. Implementing self-care. And assessing the health of our relationships. Yes, we need #RelationshipGoals. Not the ones celebrated on IG or celeb couples folks long to emulate. I'm talking about making the decision to evaluate the quality of relationships with those around us. Whether it's romantically, among friends, in the workplace, within a membership organization, unhealthy relationships can exist in various spaces. A recent buzzword regarding these types of interactions is “toxic”. One definition from Merriam-Webster describes toxic as “extremely harsh, malicious, or harmful.” And toxic behavior is harmful to one's well-being; it can be a form of emotional abuse. While there may not be bruises on the body, there is hurt beyond the surface. Whether if it's derogatory language, stonewalling or gas lighting, these actions within the confinement of a relationship is damaging to the person on the receiving end. In this episode, we chop it up with Licensed Marriage Family Therapist, Nadirah Habeebullah. She is the owner of Healing Our Trauma, which specializes in trauma and attachment therapy services. We discuss the signs of toxic relationships, how to identify harmful patterns, the impact of emotional trauma and more. So lean in for “Sis, it's Toxic: Identifying Unhealthy and Abusive Relationships.”
What does intimacy in 2023 look like? All week, #TheLITEBreakfast is conducting a social experiment to find out. Asha and Terry put pairs of people together and got them to ask each other questions that encouraged openness and vulnerability. Our third pair, Nadirah and Qasrina, are sisters!

As suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, we can create ideas of who is - and isn't -at risk. While the topic of suicide and Black Americans is beginning to come to the forefront, we still need to fuel the conversation on this serious issue. We must gain understanding on how suicidal ideation can lead to completion of suicide, as well as the role that mental illness and trauma play in contributing to suicidal thoughts or attempts. And we must get it out of our heads that successful, Black women cannot become a victim of this tragic act. The shocking and heartbreaking recent suicide of Cheslie Kryst proves that a woman who appears to have it all can also be at risk. Her suicide shook many Black women, including myself, to their core. This beautiful and vivacious Queen who was a former lawyer, entertainment reporter, and Miss USA 2019. What pushed her to the point of completing suicide? While we unfortunately may never know, her mental illness could have been a factor. Her mother said she had been living with “high-functioning depression.” Although it's not an official medical diagnosis, it's not uncommon for many who deal with depression to function as normal. They wear masks, their accolades disguising the internal turmoil they face. They get through their days, accomplishing the tasks at hand. They may be high achievers, who appear to be climbing on the right ladder of success. They can radiate joy and happiness; snapping the perfect smiling selfies. But on the inside, they are struggling to hold it all together. We can wrongly assume that suicide primarily affects white, outwardly depressed middle-aged men. In fact, only recently are we seeing more studies being directed towards the subject of how suicide impacts Black people. But we need to have the discussions about suicidal risk and prevention, mental illness, stressors unique to Black women, and the importance of therapy. We'll talk about all that today with Nadirah Habebullah, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who operates Healing Her Trauma. Listen in as we also discuss the topic of high functional depression, when suicidal ideation becomes a danger, intervening for our loved ones and more.

In the aftermath of high profile Black female athletes, Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles, taking a step back to focus on their mental health, the conversation of choosing self over the expectations of others is coming to the forefront. And I am here for it. Although many applauded these young women for having the courage to be transparent about their struggle, the critics and haters showed up, too. Per usual, we witnessed the vitriol combined with racism and misogyny on the one place we've come to expect hate to show up. On social media. Can you feel my eye roll? While social media can be a great space for entertainment, to connect, learn and find encouragement, it is also a source of stress for many. Social media doesn't just impact the well-known; the everyday person can find social media is a powerful force that affects their mental health. In fact, various studies show the link between heavy social media usage and the increased risk for depression, anxiety, loneliness and even suicidal thoughts. It's not just negative comments, bullying or a lack of “likes” that can cause harm. For some people, simply viewing the “highlights” of others leads to comparison, creating a sense of inadequacy about their own life — or appearance. Add on top of these issues, the videos of trauma we regularly witness on our feeds; it's too much, sis. So let's talk about how to take care of our mental health when it comes to social media and signs we need to take a break from FB, Twitter or the ‘Gram. Today we chop it up with Nadirah Habeebullah, LMFT, of Healing Her Trauma. She weighs in on how our social media use affects our well-being, why we should create boundaries as we use social media, the false ideas our feeds ‘feed' us and more.

Abandonment. Abuse. Depression. Racism. Rejection. All of these issues can result in personal trauma. Trauma manifests in our lives — and in various ways. From impacting our self-image, to how we parent or show up in romantic relationships, unresolved trauma has a lasting affect on us. But we can find ways to cope — and heal — through therapy. You may be thinking,“I haven't gone through anything life altering.” Make no mistake; we can normalize our trauma. We write it off because it doesn't seem “big” enough. Nah, friend. While some traumatic experiences may seem small in nature compared to what others face, it's still the same. Trauma is trauma. Periodt. So let's talk about it, sis. Enter in Nadirah Habebullah. Nadirah is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who operates Healing Her Trauma. Listen in as we discuss why strong sistas need therapy, the difference between “Big T/Little t” trauma, myths about PTSD, learning to navigate through tough seasons and more.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many performing arts companies have been turning to their archives or past performances to see how they can be repurposed for viewing today - because of the challenges of staging live shows or even having rehearsals and so on. Which is how we now have an online streaming of the play Nadirah, written by Singaporean playwright Alfian Sa’at back in 2009. The play has been staged here in Malaysia several times by the Instant Cafe Theatre, starting in 2012. So now, they will be streaming a version of the play that was staged in Tokyo in 2016, which we will be able to watch from the 19th to the 22nd of November, via cloudtheatres.com. We speak with two of the play’s performers, Sharifah Amani and Iedil Dzuhrie Alaudin, about revisiting the play, and the new dimensions it might take during an online staging. I will be reading your reviews in an upcoming episode so if you have any questions ask away :-) The Sex, Money, and Food Podcast Power, Healing and the Art of Belly Dancing, With Nadirah Bray Belly Dancing and the exploration of self love through a mystical dance... Many of us are so disconnected from our bodies in today’s culture - but dance is a sure way to get back in touch with our own physicality. Our guest for this episode knows exactly how powerful dance is, especially belly dancing! Nadirah Bray is the founder of the Goddess In Motion Institute and San Diego Belly Dancers. On this episode of the Sex, Money and Food podcast, Nadirah joins us to talk about how dance helped her heal and why she shares that message with other cancer survivors, and women of all backgrounds, ages and experiences. More About This Show Nadirah first discovered belly dancing when she was six years old. She saw beautiful women of all ages and sizes performing at the Del Mar County Fair in San Diego. Fast forward a few years to her wedding; her husband’s cousin asked if she could perform a belly dance routine for them as a wedding gift. Nadirah said yes and everyone loved it, including Nadirah. A few more years went by before belly dancing became a daily part of her life though. When her two sons were three and ten months old, Nadirah was busy doing the usual mom stuff. But something inside of her yearned for a social life of her own, and then belly dancing came to mind. She called her friend from high school, they found someone in the Yellow Pages, called the woman and went over to her house to start classes. Within five months Nadirah was performing at Zorba’s in Chula Vista, and her belly dancing journey began! For her, the dancing was a way to feel beautiful and feminine. Today she has learned it's great for recovering from different surgeries and illnesses as well. But for all women, it’s a wonderful tool to stay in touch with our ever-changing bodies and to love our bodies as they are. As women we are constantly being told we aren't good enough, we aren’t this-enough or that-enough so there’s no room for us to simply be at peace with our bodies. Belly dancing is an opportunity to love the bodies we are in, whether we are 5, 25 or 75! One of the ways we can incorporate this movement into our daily lives is by doing the figure 8 with our hips. Nadirah explains it: you start by placing your feet hip width apart, keeping your knees flexible while slightly tilting your pelvis in. Breath in, put shoulders back, then roll them down. Next bend your knees a bit, stand with your weight on your left side, while turning your right hip forward to the right diagonal. Now come from across the body from the left through the body to the right foot and then push the right hip back til it doesn't go back anymore (in a way that feels comfortable and safe). Finally you're going to come through the body from the right to the left front diagonal, and then push the left hip back to the left diagonal. In essence you are creating the infinity sign on the floor, it looks like an 8 on its side. Doing this helps create balance between your masculine and feminine energy. It also activates your womb center. If you put on soft music, it becomes a beautiful dance meditation. Do this for 5 minutes, breath in on one side and breath out when you go to the other. You’ll feel more calm, centered and relaxed after you do! Also on this edition of the Sex, Money and Food podcast, we talk about why it’s important not to dim your own light and the importance of women supporting other women. Listen in to hear all of that and more on today’s show! Nadirah Answers the Questions Q: Rank the following in order: sex, money, food. A: Food, sex and money. I love food so for life I have to have food. I have to nourish my body to have sex and to make money. With food I eat slow, and I make noises when I eat - I really savor it! Q: There is nothing better in life than… A: having fun in everything you do! Q: What is your ultimate pleasure in life? A: being of service to people and seeing them transform into their best selves. Q: What does belly dancing smell like to you? A: It smells sweet and juicy...because belly dance is a feminine movement. It’s all about loving it and moving it, that’s juicy to me. The sweetness comes because women are like beautiful flowers, just sweet. Q: What is a circumstance you went through that has allowed you to grow and learn and made you who you are today? A: I have been a professional belly dancer for 12 years, that was one goal. Then in 2009 I had stage 4 breast cancer, and thought I’m never going to achieve my goals. I went through many treatments of chemotherapy and long hospital stays, but as soon as I was out I went back to dance. Every opportunity after that I would dance or visualize it, it made me feel like alive and normal. What I learned is dance is really healing, it was healing my mind and my emotions. Just to move and be one with myself and to know myself at different stages of my life, that’s what I love. . Q: What book are you reading? A: Everybody Is a Body. I love it because it just talks about everybody being a moving self. Dance is movement plus emotion. Tweetable: “Don’t ask a question of others, make a statement. ” ~Nadirah Bray Resources From This Episode Nadirah Bray’s web site Nadirah Bray’s belly dancing web site To call Nadirah - 619-895-4241 Email Nadirah Nadirah’s Red Tent event on October 15 Nadirah Bray on Facebook Nadirah Bray on Twitter Everybody Is a Body, by Karen A. Greetings brothers and sisters, this one should have been the first in the Producer Series, but the track listing kept changing as the my favorites kept changing, and then there was Pyrography. I’ve only put one from Pyrography on here, quite intentionally though, Ser El Santisimo, good Latin vibes, and Osunlade smashes this one. The rest will be sprinkled here and there. Really and truly, Osunlade drew me into house music. I was strictly roots reggae (I owe you a roots cd by the way, trust me its building) and then the Director introduced me to Osunlade touch on Tortured Soul’s Might Do Something Wrong, and have been hooked ever since. These are some of my favorites, not a comp of his best tracks. I’m sure the real Yoruba Soul heads out there would like to strangle me for not using an Erro, or a Tortured Soul etc… there will be another Yoruba Cd, trust me. Track listing: 01 - Andre Torquato Project - Niente (Yoruba Soul Mix) 02 - Osunlade Pres. Nadirah Shakoor - Pride (Osunlade'S Back To Africa Mix) 03 - Magnetic Man Ft. John Legend - Getting Nowhere (Yoruba Soul Mix) 04 - Osunlade - Ser Al Santisimo 05 - Afefe Iku – Mirror Dance featuring Oveous Maximus (Yoruba Soul Remix) 06 - Roy Ayers - Tarzan (Osunlade Yoruba Soul Mix) 07 - Jazztronik - Dentro Mi Alma (Yoruba Soul Mix) 08 - Michelle Amador - Because Of You (Yoruba Soul Remix) 09 - Bah Samba w/Alice Russel - Tired Little One (Yoruba Soul Vocal) 10 - Ben Westbeech - So Good Today ((Yoruba Soul Remix) 11 - Soul Central feat. Abigail Bailey - Time After Time (Yoruba Soul Mix) 12 - Shazz - All I Wanna Give U (Yoruba Soul Remix) 13 - United Future Organization - Listen Love (Yoruba Soul Mix) So there you have it. Let me know what you think please. I'm certainly not choosing a favorite, although if you read the fine print, I'm sure you would read something about Jazztronik, but you didn’t hear that from me. Let me know what you think please. Stay Blessed. KAS
