As of March 2023, the latest available data indicates that there are over 6,435 B Corporations in over 159 industries and 88 countries worldwide. The number of certified B Corps are steadily increasing with the largest growing number in the US. 48% of all B Corps are publicly traded companies and B Corp employs half a million workers worldwide.On this episode the pair discuss: Why Nathan decided to focus his attention on B Corps, what does B Corp mean, why does B Corp movement matter, and what does it take to become a B Corp?KEY TAKEAWAYS I always knew I wanted to work in business since high school, later I got an international business degree. By 2012 my career was going pretty well but I went through two lay-offs in six months in 2013. Then I tried to figure out what I was going to do next in my early 30s. I was working gig jobs while waiting to start an MBa and saw a lot of other people doing the same while trying to raise families and there was no hope. It was eye-opening to see what capitalism had become. I discovered B Corp in the second year of my MBa and the sky opened, and the angels started singing, and I realised I'd found my business community of people who believed in using business as a force for good in society. I'd invested so much in myself: late nights, early mornings, things that I didn't get paid for, but I paid in time, equity, tears, sweat. I was finally starting to see the reward and I decided it would make a good book. It had to sound like me, I make fun of myself and talk about the stupid things I've done in my life, jobs that I took, times when I failed miserably, stretching outside of my comfort zone not well. I didn't want it to be like every other business book where “I'm the most successful human being ever born”, this is more: “I'm just like you, I've had a bunch of jobs that I didn't like and here's how to hopefully come out of all of that prepared for opportunities.” B Corps are for-profit businesses with a certification that is a lot like LEAN for a building – an outside non-profit comes in and looks at the business holistically: How transparent you are, your corporate governance, your workers, what kinds of benefits you offer, your pay multiplier from top to bottom paid employee, what leave you offer for parents and caregivers, your community impact, your environmental footprint, and your policies for your customers. It scores you out of 80 and validates that. As soon as Gen Z and Millennials found their voices they got together to say business as usual isn't working for everybody.  They're fed up with why things aren't more equitable, why we've allowed the status quo to continue when the status quo doesn't work, and how do we leverage the business community to solve some of  society's biggest problems?  BEST MOMENTS‘It isn't necessarily capitalism that's evil, it's what we've let it become. His specialty areas include community economic development, government contracting and supplier diversity, workforce development, and inclusive economic ecosystems. Sterling also project managed more than 15 procurement disparity studies, managed supplier diversity programs on major public-private development projects, including Atlanta's State Farm Arena, and served as project manager for Living Cities' City Accelerator 4 and 6, which explored procurement inclusion as a tool for economic inclusion. He also has provided policy guidance to several mayoral administrations, including former mayor of Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms' (through her Commission on Workforce and Economic Development), Birmingham (AL) Mayor Randall Woodfin, and Mayor David Briley of Nashville (TN), among others. He also consulted with the Shelby County government on passage of its 2022 Minority and Women Business program ordinance. Sterling obtained his master's degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Planning and Economic Development from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University and holds an undergraduate degree in Sociology from Furman University, where he was a Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium scholar, football letterman, and participated in Track and Field. What is B corp? greenwashing, poker tips and the path to purpose in responsibly sustained companies are just some of the topics. Where's it coming from?Nathan: I think it's because I think that everybody should be like aware and considerate of everything around them and I try to be so I try to never go over the speed limit. If I can see like there's a row of traffic coming on and there's a car stopping the traffic because they want to turn, I always try to let them turn and I think that some people are selfish and it drives me bonkers.Julia: So you have road compassion and road rage at the same time?Nathan: Yeah, maybe. But it's interesting because I'm going through a process at the moment of trying to wash away this road rage and actually it comes from your husband. He's kind of like my yogic master and he's telling me all these things to help me. He's when somebody does something crazy and your husband is in the car with me going to work every day...Julia: Does he give you the voice in their head?Nathan: And he says you know it's just a mistake. They didn't normally want to do that kind of thing but just this one time they made a mistake and they probably won't do it again and it doesn't matter. Or if I say yeah but lots of people do that and he says but they're not going to change, you can't drive their car, you can only...Julia: He's infuriating with his wisdom, isn't he?Nathan: Well but it's useful because it's me changing like it's helping reduce my stress but it's made me think about some other things as well.Julia: So do you think there's a job out there then for people who become passengers to road ragers and give them this calming voice? They sit there in the passenger seat and as you're driving along and your road rage manifests, this person has then to calm you down and talk you through it. Do you think there's a job there, do you could make money from that?Nathan: I reckon five years ago when the economy was pretty good that would have been a possibility but I think that now that maybe people don't have that money to splash around.Julia: We're all just stuck with our road rage then?Nathan: Stuck with my road rage.
