“Becoming a mother gave me this drive and confidence. I felt like I had a voice and that I felt ready to be that person that was at the front of the room, having those ideas, using my imagination, and attempting to communicate that to a whole room of dancers.” ~ Dani Rowe Kaitlin talks with Choreographer and filmmaker, Dani Rowe about her transition to motherhood and how that impacted her career as a whole. Dani started out as a dancer from very early on in her life, with her first professional role at age 17. From 2001-2015, she was a Principal Dancer with the Australian Ballet and Houston Ballet, and also danced with the prestigious Nederlands Dans Theater. After her daughter was born, having moved to the States with her husband (also a dancer), Dani pursued choreography and became even more dedicated to dance, though in a different way. She has created works for San Francisco Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater's SWITCH program, and Royal New Zealand Ballet, to name a few.  During the pandemic, her work shifted to include filmmaking, which you can see on http://daniellerowe.net/ (her website). Dani and Kaitlin talk about: Dani's transition from dancer, to mother and choreographer. Before You Had a Name, a unique collaborative project between Dani, violinist and upcoming guest on this podcast Heather Powell, and dancer & choreographer Sarah van Patten. The unfavorable effect that pregnancy often has on female dancers' careers, an outrageous imbalance that inarguably stems from patriarchal bias, and one that the very foundation of Before You Had a Name challenged from the get go. The juggle between motherhood and Dani's choreography work. The concept of invisible work, how that resonates with Dani, and the importance and value of making space for creative ideas. This week I try a new solo format called "Dancer reacts.." and do a commentary podcast on Jiří Kylián's "Petite Mort". Created back in '91 this work is by the choreographer who headed up Nederlands Dans Theater for two decades. I've been binge watching his back catalogue on marquee.tv/ and this piece and another piece "Bella Figura" I was really struck by. To watch it with me check out David's Dance Podcast on YouTube as I unpack the choreography. I also talk about photographer Tyler Mitchell's book "I Can Make You Feel Good". Mitchell's depiction of young Black Americans in playful scenarios, speaks to an artist that is reclaiming the narratives around the representation of himself and people like him, young Black men. While not dance, his work has to do with the body and how it is represented both aesthetically and in conversation with culture and historical narratives. In that way it is a great discussion launcher for those interested in dance and the performative body. My instagram: @dance_across_mediumsEmail me: davidsdancepodcast@gmail.com

A Body's Language

The guest on Episode 5 of 'A Body's Language' is Paul Lightfoot. Paul speaks about some of his and Sol's favourite creations, his life, how his first piece of choreography makes him cringe and how he and the original cast of Petit Mort weren't so sure about the creation, until the curtain went up opening night. Paul Lightfoot (1966, England) joined Nederlands Dans Theater in 1985, starting as a dancer with NDT 2. Two years later Lightfoot joined NDT 1, where he danced until 2008. During his dancing career, he started choreographing together with Sol León. From September 2011 until August 2020 he also was Artistic Director of the company.León and Lightfoot have been a choreographer's duo since 1989 and together they have created more than fifty pieces for the company, for which they received prestigious awards. In 2002 León and Lightfoot were appointed house choreographers for NDT, a position they held until August 2020.https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=mg9SCrc0dSISad Case-Music: Pérez Prado: Mambo no. 8; Muchachita; Always in my heart; Caballo Negro Alberto Dominguez: Frenesi Ray Barretto: El Watusi Trio Los Panchos: Perfidia Augustin Lara: Maria Bonita | Set and costumes: Sol León & Paul Lightfoot | Light: Tom Bevoort.

Marina Mascarell (Oliva, Spain,1980) is a choreographer based in The Netherlands. Resident Choreographer at Korzo Theatre in The Hague between 2011-21 and Associated Artist at Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona since 2018. In her art the reflexions, inquiries and concepts turn into a poetic fight, where thought transforms into corporeality and movement. Marina is interested in a rebellious body characterized by questioning ‘normativity'. In the dancing body as a form of resistance, deeply rooted in a political and social action. Beside her independent work Marina has also been commissioned to create pieces by different institutions such as GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Biennale de la Danse of Lyon with Lyon Opera Ballet, Skanes Dansteater, Dance Forum Taipei or Nederlands Dans Theater. She collaborates as well with fellow artists in the fields of visual arts, film, music and theatre. Her work has been seen in The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Taiwan, China, Korea, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. She has been recognised and awarded with several prizes along her career such as BNG Excellent Dans Award 2015 and the past years she has been nominated by Barcelona Critics Awards and Butaca Awards. Along side with her work as a choreographer Marina has developed a practice which is strongly linked to her choreographic process. A method focus in movement research and the increase of body awareness. She teaches workshops at different festivals, institutions or schools. Ph: Jubal Battisti

Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity. -Albert EinsteinTo describe this time as difficult is an understatement for most, yet within it lies a surplus of serendipities and loads of lessons. I am grateful to experience this firsthand learning from artists that I would not have access to if it weren't for the pandemic. Two of these awesome artists are Spenser Theberge and Jermaine Spivey. The Betweens was a fantastic and engaging work created by Spenser Theberge and Jermaine Spivey for L.A. Dance Project based on the current condition of this world because of COVID, the political climate and more. I am excited to share this rich conversation as we discuss creating this wonderful work, navigating through the unpredictable and the what has inspired them as people and as artists. Some key takeaways from Spenser and Jermaine: Discovering and working with dancers as people first Being flexible with the twists and turns of COVID that affected the creation and timing of their work Conflict resolution can be approached differently but still arrive at a common place. Dance and technique are not separate. Inspiration can come from anywhere.
