The 1990's was a strange time for wrestling in Japan. Not only for the changing of the guard but of it's evolution to form one of the most popular combat sports today: Mixed Martial Arts. On this episode, the chaps are joined by Squill of Wrestling With The Narrative to talk about the movers and shakers of what became a boom period for the sport and would form the basis of modern MMA. Oh and talking a lot about Nobuhiko Takada as well! All of that plus the week's news in wrestling!
Kris and David are joined by Dave Prazak (@DavePrazak) to discuss the week that was October 26-November 1, 1991.We start in WCW where we talk about the CHAMBER OF HORRORS and the rest of the wacky Halloween Havoc 1991 PPV, including Barry Windham getting his hand "broken” by Larry Zbyszko, Paul E. Dangerously's big return, the debut of the WCW Halloween Phantom/his unmasking as “Ravishing” Rick Rude, and so much more. This is a definite WCW EVERYBODY section, as that PPV is an all-timer, so you definitely don't want to miss it.Then we go international, where we chat about SWS running some big shows, Nobuhiko Takada and Trevor Berbick having a press conference for their upcoming fight, the ongoing strike by the Sindicato Nacional de Luchadores in Mexico, and much more.Next, we go back to the U.S. for the indie scene, where we have Herb Abrams threatening to sue everyone, the real story on Gordon Scozzari and his AWF, Joel Goodhart wanting to run TWA shows in Florida, the birth of Smoky Mountain Wrestling, Dr. Tom Prichard cutting a promo on USWA TV about folks who think he sounds too much like Roddy Piper, and ESPN saving the Global Wrestling Federation, among other things. Then we close with the WWF, where we talk about Ric Flair not doing big business in his first house show run and why that was, Sgt. Slaughter wanting his country back, Steve Beverly going over the state of wrestling on TV, and other assorted goodies.Prazak is always a fantastic guest, and this week is no different, so you know the drill. Marty declares what match in his opinion has the best draw finish of all time. Matt gushes over Bob Backlund as Marty just sits back and revels in his adoration for one of the all-time greats. Click, download, enjoy, this is #15-11. Let us know what you think.
In the first of what will hopefully be a long-running series of interviews with luminaries of the grappling scene, mat maestro Daniel Makabe, in a chat recorded just before this year's Wrestlemania weekend, takes us through a hand-picked mixtape of his favourite puro matches, and tells us how they influenced his career and his thinking. (CONTENT WARNING: We very briefly discuss the events of this past week in professional wrestling at the very start of the episode. We do not go into any detail on specific allegations and it's easily skippable, about 3 minutes or so. We stand with and believes all victims.) This week on Wrestling Omakase we talk some interpromotional matches from the mid-to-late 00s, a classic from NOAH in 2004 and much more. If you haven't listened to a 5 Matches episode yet, every week John and the guest each choose 2 matches to watch and talk about on the episode. Then we each choose a third match, which is put up to a vote on the @wrestleomakase Twitter account (or on the Patreon!), letting the listeners choose our fifth and final match of the week. It's a fun retro format featuring all sorts of different wrestling! Wrestling Omakase now has a Patreon. Nippon Professional Baseball, the world's number two league, just returned this past weekend, and with the world's number *one* league seemingly as far away from returning as ever it's never been a better time to get into the NPB. They discuss the somewhat hilarious origins and state of Case's chosen favorite team, plus John talks a little about the NPB video game and enjoying it as a change of pace after many years of playing MLB The Show. Once that's out of the way they get into this week's chosen matches, which are: 1. Jado & Gedo vs. Masaaki Mochizuki & Don Fujii, NJPW 1/7/07 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gze6hk6fb7c&feature=youtu.be) 2. Sorry for the slight delay, a planned episode had to be aborted and we're back to the list as we return to New Japan Pro Wrestling for the first time since our first episode. Whilst Lorcan (@lorcanmullan) and Simon (@simoncross3) have already covered matches involving the great All Japan wrestlers of the 90s (Misawa, Kawada, Kobashi, Taue) this is the ONLY match in the series that includes a member of the other infamous collection of Japanese wrestlers to revolutionise wrestling in the 90s. Whilst Chono and Hashimoto never even got one, Keiji Mutoh of the NJPW Three Musketeers was able to take part in one perfect match in the eyes of Dave Meltzer only three years in his career as he and Shiro Koshinaka challenge the returning UWF shoot fighting team of Akira Maeda and Nobuhiko Takada to try to reclaim the IWGP Tag Team titles for New Japan. lmtyspod@gmail.com
Lorcan (@lorcanmullan) and Simon (@simoncross3) enter the world of shoot-style wrestling, for a short period of time perhaps the hottest style in the entire industry. One of us really hated it! Listen to find out which one! lmtyspod@gmail.com

And now for something completely different as, following hot on the heels of their series on the humiliation and eventual collapse of the shoot style promotion UWFI, George, David and Daniel cover what Nobuhiko Takada and friends did next; the MMA phenomenon that was PRIDE FC. In this first episode, the boys dip into the formation of the promotion, and review a few fights that really sum up the madness that was the early years of the company; a match where one competitor weighed nearly four times the other, an obvious fix, and a NINETY-minute classic. Along the way your hosts get into a rock legend's questionable political views, the legendary VHS known as Dickie Bird's Greatest Cricketers, and much more besides. Discussing MMA rather than wrestling isn't going to stop the Puro Pourri Podcast! Matches: Emmanuel Yarbrough (1-1) vs. Daiju Takase (0-0) (PRIDE FC, 24 June 1998) Nobuhiko Takada (1-2) vs. Mark Coleman (6-3) (PRIDE FC, 29 April 1999) Kazushi Sakuraba (8-1-1) vs. Royce Gracie (12-0-1) (PRIDE FC, 1 May 2000)
The NJPW vs. UWFI saga marches to its heady climax as David, George and Daniel look at the death rattle in UWFI's dessicated throat. Marvel as Riki Choshu continues his Burial Tour '95-'96, a fat Elvis impersonator shows why he was the most badass action hero of all time, and the guys laugh at Yoji Anjo some more. They also somehow manage to mention a storyline where a sumo wrestler hatches out of an egg not once, but twice. A typical two hours' work from the Puro Pourri Podcast. Matches: Riki Choshu vs. Masahito Kakihara (NJPW, 4 January 1996) Keiji Muto (c) vs. Nobuhiko Takada (IWGP Heavyweight Championship) (NJPW, 4 January 1996) Nobuhiko Takada (c) vs. Shinya Hashimoto (IWGP Heavyweight Championship) (29 April 1996)
The last time we looked at shoot style, Akira Maeda was starting of the UWF and had brought an expanded roster out of NJPW to establish the style. Now his apprentice; Nobuhiko Takada and his master; Yoshiaki Fujiwara to have their turn in the sun. James and Chelsea explore the politics created by this next stage of shoot evolution, its links to modern day MMA and its impact on pro wrestling history in Japan, North America and Europe.

Kris & David are joined by Robert O'Connor (@ghostofquinones) to discuss the week that was March 3-9, 2002. We talk about the earliest reports about what was to become NWA-TNA, with all sorts of info about how and why this was happening, which also features some great Don West audio from Shop at Home. We also talk about the other startups getting attention at the time, WWA & XWF, as well as their issues at that time. We then examine a very heavy week in New Japan, a new NWA World Heavyweight Champion being crowned in Zero-One, and T2P getting ready to go to war with Toryumon. Also, O'Connor gives us a full rundown on the Western Canadian scene, we go over all sorts of U.S. indie goodness, and then close out with the WWF section. Kris & David are joined by Dominic Garrini (@dgarrinibc) to discuss the *rest* of the week that was January 30-February 5, 2000, as we did the WCW, WWF, & ECW sections of that week last year. (So this show takes care of that outstanding Patreon request.) We talk about the first round of the PRIDE Grand Prix tournament at the Tokyo Dome and all the major news from that show, which was the catalyst for a new beginning for the world of MMA. On that tip, we talk about Kazushi Sakuraba's star rising amidst controversy surrounding his fight with Guy Mezger, a pissed off Ken Shamrock accidentally getting Bas Rutten his commentary job, a disgraced Nobuhiko Takada, and much more. We also talk about the rest of Japan including the debut of the Giant Baba statue in All Japan, the greatness of Alexander Otsuka, assorted indy scum shows, and lots more. We also talk about the lucha libre and US independent scenes, as well, including CZW’s Night of Main Events with Justice Pain vs. Nick Gage. It’s great being back in the saddle again after a rough couple weeks, so listen now!!!!!
