It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Actually, it was a  morally complicated time! In this episode, Becca and Lani open one of the most iconic chapters of Mary-Kate and Ashley's career: The Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley. "The Case of Thorn Mansion" and "The Case of the Logical i Ranch," the first two direct-to-video productions released in the twins' Adventures Of series, were filmed during a hiatus from Full House and in between their two feature-length TV Movies for ABC. NOTE: If you’d like to skip my commentary and go straight to the song, go to 17:00. However, I do suggest listening to the whole episode! Thanks for tuning in to the first episode of “25 Bad Songs,” an Art In All Its Forms podcast series where I (Suraj) write 25 songs — one song a week — and show you how I did it! As I said in my latest newsletter: Each podcast episode will be a little different. Sometimes I’ll share my thoughts on the writing process or the inspiration and story behind certain songs. Sometimes I’ll carefully show you how voice memos and scribbled rough drafts turn into a piece of music sounding a little more complete. Most importantly, I’m always gonna be 100% transparent with you: what I liked about the song, what I didn’t like, how I’m looking to improve, my musical insecurities — EVERYTHING. I hope it will give you a sense of what an artist goes through when they are working on something but aren’t sure of the final result. Today’s song, “Long Distance,” tells the story of a long-distance relationship coming to its end. Disclaimer: this has NOTHING TO DO with my wonderful 3-year relationship with Maura, which is strong and well!*****Full Lyrics:Verse 1I haven’t held your face in a whileOnly text messages and digital smilesOpposite coasts for years at a timeFalling asleep without you by my sidePre-chorusWatching you float away There’s only so much pain I can takeChorusTryna keep it goingEven though we’re tired of long distance, long distanceIt’s so hard to know if All of this is worth it, the long distance, long distanceVerse 2Why do we keep this charade all the timeIt’s not what it used to be, we’re not doing fineTalking in circles, feeling in squaresYou say that you love me but you’re not herePre-chorusWatching us float away Wish there was something that I could say ChorusTryna keep it goingEven though we’re tired of long distance, long distanceIt’s so hard to know if All of this is worth it, the long distance, long distanceBridgeWatching you float away Remembering better daysWatching you float away Wish there was something left here to sayChorusTryna keep it goingEven though we’re tired of long… distanceIt’s so hard to know if All of this is worth it, the long distance, long distanceOutroThere’s only so much pain I can take*****A few visualsHere’s a look at my ridiculous scribbles on Post-its and in my Field Notes Memo Book… I can barely read these notes after a few days, so I try to get everything digitized at some point. Is Your Career Identity Preventing Your Happiness?

ELITE PerforMENce with Dr. Brad

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 15, 2021 35:17

Let me make this clear…   You are more than what you do for a living!!   Your identity is more and deeper than what you do for your career or business!   Fellas, ultimately, we are destroying ourselves because we are defining ourselves primarily by what we do for a living…instead of by the TRUTH OF WHO WE ARE!   Our identity is HOW we see and perceive ourselves…how we define ourselves. How we perceive  ourselves has great impact on whether we have positive or negative self-esteem toward ourselves. This identity dictates how we show up in the world.   PROBLEM: WE IDENTIFY OURSELVES BASED ON OUR CAREER   We often identify & define ourselves by what we do (i.e. doctor, lawyer, business owner, etc.), and how well we do it. If you were asked…”Who are you?” How would you answer? Often times our professional title is used to answer that question. When first meeting someone we often immediately talk about what we do. The first question after greeting someone and sharing our name is the question, “What do you do?” We connect our WORTH and VALUE to what we do and how well we do it We often automatically translate our level of success or failure within our career or business, to a measure of what our personal value and worth is. We often think…”Once I achieve this next career goal…then I'll be happy”. This in essence is saying, “I will feel better about myself…I will feel of value and worth only AFTER I achieve this professional goal”.   Unfortunately, this dependence of our identity on our career is a setup for… Perpetual failure: In essence we never believe we are good enough because our worth will always be connected to the next goal we are in pursuit of and therefore only happy and fulfilled once we achieve it. That means the rest of the time while in pursuit of achieving the goal, you feel ‘less than'. An emotional rollercoaster: If (and only when) we achieve, then we are happy about ourselves. But if we don't achieve, then we feel horrible about ourselves. Conditional self-worth: Your self-worth and self-esteem is completely conditional upon performance…which is false!! Your self-worth and value has NOTHING TO DO with your performance or achievement! You have intrinsic value that fuels your ability to achieve…not that achievement fuels your value. A lack of self-control: We can NOT control many circumstances that influence our results in life. Therefore, when we connect our value to our results, we are in essence connecting our value to things we have zero control over.   What I've found is that when our identity and value is tied to influences that are external from us, such as our job or titles, it creates what I call a conditional performance identity: If I perform well…then I have a temporary positive self-esteem and value If I don't perform well…then I have a constant negative self-esteem and value   The challenge with this way of thinking is that our career, jobs, and businesses can change based on circumstances we have no control over (i.e. market changes, Covid, etc.) And if circumstances change the results within our career…then so does our identity and self-value.   Examples: Professional sports Post retirement identity issues: Athletes struggle with retirement because their identity was primarily defined by their career as an athlete. As the career retires, so does their identity and feeling of self-worth. Career Anxiety & depression: When they don't perform at a certain level, they will struggle mentally because their value and identity is tied to their level of performance.   This happens within our careers as well…but it just more on full display with professional sports.   SOLUTION: ANCHOR OUR IDENTITY ON SOMETHING FOUNDATIONAL THAT WILL NEVER CHANGE   Your identity is WHO YOU ARE…not What you do!!   Your identity should help you in ALL areas of life! Not just for your career!   Who you are is based on THE TRUTH who YOUR CREATOR says you are and the INTRINSIC UNIQUENESS AND VALUE YOU WERE BORN WITH. You ARE… A child of God: Therefore by definition you are Royalty: You are a chosen child of The King Capable: Made in the image and likeness of God himself A Citizen of heaven: You are a representative of The Kingdom of Heaven Great: God is great, and the Spirit of God is IN YOU…therefore you are great Complete: You are already equipped with greateness. You don't NEED anything to be great.   Therefore, you show up great, because your intrinsic value is great! You don't need to prove your value by performing because you ALREADY ARE GREAT!   I envision God asking…”Who told you, that you were just a doctor…lawyer…business owner?”   When you come from this place of known intrinsic value and greatness…the pressure is off! You don't have to perform to prove your worth or value. You can now create to the level of who your TRUE identity is, based off of who your creator says you are.   ACTION: DISCOVER WHO GOD SAYS YOU ARE   Do some simple research. Google this phrase: “What does God say about who I am in the bible?” Write down your top 3 things of what God says about who you are. Start telling yourself this daily to remind yourself about who you really are and your true identity!   If you need help, book a 1:1 Discovery Call with me at https://drbradmd.com   Talk to you soon, Dr. Brad

When I first set out on my weight loss journey, I only thought of confidence had to do with what my body looked like. Welcome to What’s Better This Week? Episode 7: Making Treatment Plans Solutions FocusedWhen we last left off, we had collected some superfluous data and some pee, and now, here in our fourth appointment, we need to make a treatment plan that we’re going to refer back to regularly for a host of reasons. First, and foremost, at least in New York State, where we are mandated to by the Office of Mental Health: patients’ discharge planning is actually begun at their admission, or at least we have to check a box that says “discharge planning has begun.” Why? Because someone on the state or funding level has said that it is vitally critical that we make it apparent that we’re not trying to create patients for life, and that we are actively working on moving our patients along. For someone who is a Solutions Focused Brief Therapist, this is a no-brainer: the Brief, in SFBT means that we never keep a patient a micro-second longer than they want, to be in treatment. We don’t want patient’s for life, it means we’re n to doing our jobs. It is antithetical to our treatment model. However, part of proving that we’re being honest with the finances of insurance companies (who again, dominate this industry far more than they should) is that we indicate that we have already begun discharge planning by our fourth apartment (right after admitting our patient) and we continue this through the collaborative creation of a treatment plan.Additionally, the Treatment Plan ensures (or, in theory it works to try to ensure) for therapists and counselors who are not Solution Focused, that they are working with a goals/objective modality of therapy, rather than just talk therapy: those paying for therapy want to make sure that something more than a therapeutic relationship is happening…they want to make sure that patients are getting somewhere and that somewhere is “cured” and out the door. It is the Medical, not the Sociological model. Goal/Objective therapy removes “talk therapy” largely as an option, because a patient must consistently be doing something, to consistently be moving toward their goals…for my astute listeners, you will note that this is actually placing (or can have the trap of placing) many patients into some kind of pass/fail model of therapy, where they're “not making progress” quickly enough…and it’s largely nonsense; it also serves two interests: first the funders/insurance companies, and second, those clinicians who don’t take a step or two step down approach, but rather wish to seem superior to their patients who don’t “make enough” progress in their own eyes.So what do we do about this nonsense? And how on EARTH do we ethically and honestly connect Solution Focused Brief Therapy work into this insurance based, financially based, diagnostically riddled model? Actually, quite easily - but we have to be careful about it.First, our treatment plans follow a Problem -> Goal -> Objective -> Intervention model. This means that we have to share what our patient’s problem is, what their goal is, how they’re going to get to their goal, and what specific intervention is going to get them there. We call it a “PGOI” for short. Ergh. When working with patients, I will often explain - much like when I explain that all a diagnosis is, is a title heading that works to explain a combination of symptoms that go together, a treatment plan works like a journal, to log what we’ve been working on, and to make sure that I understand them correctly. I also - much like we have discussed to date - will then have to balance out the patient’s wants, needs, desires, and goals - my own, as an SFBT therapist - and the state’s, as our licensor, and of course the insurance company (as funder, and of course sometimes that’s the state). So first is working with the patient to explain to them all of the reasons that we have to co-create this document together, and then explain how on earth we can make it useful (“it’s like a journal, you can use it to hold us accountable, you probably wouldn’t want to go into a teacher’s classroom if she didn’t have a lesson plan, or go to a Doctor’s office where they gave everyone the same shot…”). Then we work on the treatment plan itself. So, let’s say a patient came in, and we had to diagnose them (because again, we’re making SFBT fit in a clinical, insurance based, environment) with depression; first we would discuss the “problem.” However, we’re going to discuss it in a solution’s focused way. So rather than say “John Doe is having depression!” or “John Doe is suffering from depression!” or “John doe is depressed!” (right, all normally “good” problem statements”) we’ll phrase it as “John desires to reduce the impact of symptoms of depression on his daily life.” I am not saying that John *IS* depressed or *IS* depression. I’m not saying he has anything. We’re merely, factually, stating that through SFBT language John has identified as wanting to have these barriers reduced. Then we’re going to come up with a goal.Of course the Goals are more, or less, pre-selected for us. So we’re probably going to select that John Doe wants to reduce the intensity and frequency of his symptoms. All good and well. So how are we going to get there? Well, John now has to pick an objective, and 99.99% of the time, that Objective will be “Learn & Practice New Coping Skills.” So what on EARTH does that look like in the Solutions Focused world?Normally the pre-fill starts with “John Doe will learn x number of new coping skills in order to reduce mental health symptoms.” Okay…great. So John Doe is going to learn his “lucky number” of coping skills to reduce mental health symptoms. BUT Solutions Focused work is a process and it’s a way of thinking (and for many it becomes a way of life). This isn’t DBT where there’s manualized therapy and you can give a worksheet, go over it, and check it off that the patient is “making progress” or “not.” How do you document a journey? How do you do so ethically? How do you bring Insurance Companies on board and do so ethically?First, in the objective, we add that “John doe will learn 5 new coping skills, through a solution focused lens, in order to reduce mental health symptoms.” (document, document, document)”. In our intervention, we obviously note down “individual therapy” and how many times a week.Okay, so we add in anything else that we may be working on in a similar fashion, we add in “Physical Health” because New York State says that we have to (never mind that it should be a patient’s choice, no matter how important it is!), along with Tobacco if the patient is a smoker (again, who’s the patient/client here?); and then we get to the thorny part: how do we make this, this treatment plan, this document, that we have to link everything to, make sense? How do we make an SFBT session where a patient comes in and talks about something seemingly unrelated make sense when it “has to” be related to a patient’s depression, right?A patient can only work on what's in their treatment plan, every session has to link to the treatment plan, there can be no deviation from the treatment plan, or we have to add it to the treatment plan, because otherwise we're not being ethical, we have to document and it has to link to the treatment plan, every single session must somehow be linked to the treatment plan, so the answer is openly, honestly, and sincerely: through good SFBT practice. I’ll talk more about how we document and connect it in our notes in our next episode (when we get into documentation) but for now, how do we have our conversation? We start with “What’s better this week?” we then follow that up with “What is your best hope’s for this session?” and usually scaling questions, we move into what I refer to as “discernment” where we use change talk, and come up with an experiment…and then follow that up with (somewhere in there) a question about “and, if this experiment works, do you think this will help you to reduce symptoms of your depression?” and all of a sudden…SFBT becomes clinical; because the patient, themselves, will give you - IN THEIR OWN WORDS, how the experiment that they came up with, fits into their treatment plan, even if it seemingly had NOTHING TO DO with depression at all…maybe they were worried about what they were going to have for dinner…the point is that not that you were able to connect everything together, but that the patient, the client was, and you were able to document it, all by asking the very simple question of “how does it fit?".Which is why it's very important that you look at the treatment plan before each session, so you know how you can guide the patient to connect it, what you're working on, in the solution focused process, to what you are allowed to work on and bill through, and that is how you make solution focused function in this clinical environment legally and ethically. And since this seems a good a place as any to end off as any, we’ll do so and close here. Next week, we’ll discuss documentation, and then after, we’ll move into more of a “everything Solution Focused” format.Thank you for listening. Please tune in again next Sunday, as we continue forward together down our solutions focused path. Comments, constructive criticism, feedback, and questions can be sent to podcast@wbtwcast.net. * Episode 10 is live! This is one of my favorite topics-so much, that my hands were flying around the whole time I recorded it. #ItalianAndTalkWithMyHands * This episode is also dedicated to my mom, Gina, who I hope to be half of the mom that she is to me one day. A very raw, emotional episode, and my favorite yet. * In this episode- we go over, why chronic dieting is ruining your relationship with food. You’ve been trying to diet for as long you can remember, yet you still don’t see all of your “eating clean” in the mirror, while you secretly wish you could dive face first into a sleeve of Oreos. * For the woman out there who feels like she always is restricting what she is eating, tells herself what she can eat, and what she can’t eat, EVERY DAY, and when she does indulge in her “forbidden foods”, feels guilt, shame, and that she “blew it” for her entire day, only to repeat this cycle OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Your relationships with others, is impacted, because you’re not able to enjoy dinner with your family, date night, or nights out with your friends. If this sounds like you, then THIS EPISODE IS FOR YOU! ** There is a reason why this keeps happening to you, and it has NOTHING TO DO with your willpower towards certain foods. ** Be sure to tune in, and leave the Strength Through Food Freedom podcast a review on the Apple Podcast app on your iphone, Google Play Music on your android, or right from the link in my bio through Anchor! At R & R Property, through our extensive research, we know that the majority of our buyers are tree changers (clients leaving the city or highly suburban areas to move to the country) and where they are coming from. As a group, we generally know their habits, their dreams and their concerns. What we are finding though is that they have an ideal property style in their mind and we know that what we have with a little razzle dazzle could be what they’re looking for. But, they can’t see this. They can’t see past the privet lined creek bank, the farm rubbish lying around the paddock, the falling down old dairy. You – the seller, need to make it easier for them! So what we suggest to our sellers who may be receiving inspections, but their property keeps getting rejected is to look at it from a city persons point of view. Does your property appeal? Is it magazine worthy? Buyers today expect a well presented home in a certain style and a property to match. They would like to be able to envisage their stylish furniture in what could possibly be their dream lifestyle property. They are watching programs such as Escape to the Country on the Lifestyle channel. What your tree changers are reading is magazines like Hunter Lifestyle, Australian Country Style, Australian Country etc etc. Look at your property with fresh eyes: Does it fit the ideal? These magazines present beautiful images of homes where the furniture suits the home, a bit country but clean and modern. The front of the home is welcoming, tidy and stylish. Possibly a picket fence, which is painted, a gorgeous old style fancy gate, an attractive feature front door and a neat and tidy pathway leading to it. Gardens need to be relatively low maintenance but stylish and set the home off like a piece of quality jewellery makes an outfit. Do you have carefully placed attractive tables and chairs for morning coffee, afternoon bubbles, bickies and cheese? Or for that matter an alfresco dining area? Don’t forget a verandah space is another room and should be tastefully decorated accordingly. The paddocks should be slashed and park like if possible, with no rubbish or old building materials, dead tractors or cars etc lying around. If there is shedding or stables it needs to be well maintained and attractive, setting off the home and paddocks. If you have a river, creek or dam on your property, is it clear of weed such as privet? Is it easily accessible? They want to see it and be able to get to it without effort. Let them imagine them taking their little children or grandchildren down there for a paddle.  A cute little moored boat on a large dam also does wonders for eye candy appeal! The interior preferably should be freshly painted in light colours, with plenty of natural light coming into each room through either doors, windows or skylights. Under foot, usually timber floorboards or natural style flooring like bamboo or floating timber style floorboards is ideal. A minimal amount of attractive pieces of furniture, décor and artwork placed throughout. No clutter. All prospective buyers say they can see past mess and clutter – this is not the case. So make it easy and you’ll have far more chance of selling to this target group of buyers. These buyers are usually cashed up after a sale or living in an area where their current home could possibly sell within a week of hitting the market. Quick Checklist Front gate attractive Front fence freshly painted and attractive Pathways clear and neat and preferably attractive Gardens attractive but low maintenance, suit your home Front door, great pop of colour, attractive fittings Exterior paintwork in neutral colour and neat & well maintained Interior, clean, clutter free, light and airy, smells good. Shedding, useful and attractive, especially if it is stables Paddocks, slashed, rubbish free, fencing in good repair Creeks, river, dam attractive and easy access.   If you are struggling to do any of the above yourself or are not sure if your home fits this description please let the team at R & R Property know.
