Watch the interview on Youtube here: https://youtu.be/eyS-eokvP-UEveryone laughed when Jesse and Emily Cole said they were going to save baseball by turning it into a circus. The traditionalists said it was a mockery. The investors said it wouldn't scale. In this episode, we're sharing a conversation with David George, General Partner at a16z on the firm's growth investing team. David has been involved in backing many of the defining companies of this era and is now investing behind a new wave of AI startups. This discussion goes deep into how the a16z growth practice operates: how the team hires and develops a “Yankees-level” culture, how investment decisions get made without traditional committees, and how they build long-term relationships with founders years before investing.A major focus is AI. David talks through how the team is investing across the stack and why he believes this period could create some of the largest companies ever built. He also walks through the models that guide his thinking: why markets often misprice consistent growth, what makes “pull” businesses so durable, why many important markets become winner-take-all, and what he's learned from studying exceptional founders — especially the “technical terminators” he's drawn to. NFL Network analyst/Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner and Rich discuss Tua Tagovailoa's benching by the Miami Dolphins, how Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix has improved as the season has progressed, why he was “extremely impressed” with Philip Rivers in his first NFL game in 5 years, why the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills could be the two most dangerous teams in the AFC playoffs field, how the Jacksonville Jaguars have levelled up Trevor Lawrence this year, and previews what to expect in the Rams-Seahawks pivotal NFC West showdown on Thursday Night Football. The Ringer's Todd McShay tells Rich why teams would much rather select a quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft instead of in 2026, if Indiana Hoosiers QB Fernando Mendoza is worthy of the #1 overall pick next spring, reveals his pick to win the College Football Playoff, and discusses Michigan's search for a new head coach in the wake of firing Sherrone Moore. This week I had the chance to sit down with two fascinating guests who are at the forefront of bridging the worlds of digital performance marketing and traditional television advertising. Nick Fairbairn, VP of Growth Marketing at Chime, and Andy Schonfeld, CRO at Tatari, walked me through how they've transformed Chime from a pure digital-first, DTC neobank brand built on social and search into a sophisticated advertiser that runs television campaigns with the same performance mindset they apply to Meta and Google. Their partnership has evolved from small linear TV tests six years ago to a comprehensive full-funnel TV strategy that blends brand building with direct response metrics.Nick and Andy shared incredible insights into the evolution of performance TV, from navigating the COVID-era inventory opportunities to understanding why linear TV still matters even as streaming dominates the conversation. They explained how Chime approaches television with a portfolio strategy, balancing premium reach moments like live sports with more targeted direct response placements, and why creative and media planning have become the "new targeting" in a world where precise one-to-one identification remains expensive and imperfect. We also dove into the challenges of measuring TV in a fragmented landscape, the role of AI-driven creative, and whether shoppable TV will actually move the needle or remain a marginal innovation. BT dives into the Emirates NBA Cup Final, admitting his initial skepticism about the "gimmick" tournament has faded, and now he's "into it." With the Knicks facing the San Antonio Spurs, Tierney declares he's "excited" at the possibility of finally celebrating any championship with the team before his show ends. He acknowledges the extra "juice" the mid-season tournament provides and confirms the $530,933 per-player prize money for the winning team. The discussion pivots briefly to the Yankees, with BT reiterating the need for the team to tweak its roster due to a lack of right-handed power and questions about the infield defense. He strongly argues against overpaying for Cody Bellinger and suggests the Yankees should focus on using their "surplus of arms" to acquire a needed bat.
BT unleashes a fiery critique of the Yankees' slow-moving offseason, warning that the assumed return of Cody Bellinger is a false assumption and a major threat to the team's success. With a long list of young, unproven position players like Jazz Chisholm, Ben Rice, and a potential "strikeout machine" in Ryan McMahon, Tierney argues the lineup is riddled with holes. The more pressing concern, according to BT, is a disaster start: with Cole, Rodón, and Schmidt all recovering, the rotation is dangerously thin. Tierney urges the Yankees to forget big-bat spending and execute a "radical reset" by loading up on pitching depth (like signing Michael King or trading for Peralta) to ensure they don't "drown in April or May" against a rapidly improving, aggressive AL East (Jays, O's, Red Sox). The ultimate message: the path to winning is no longer through hitting, but through a surplus of elite arms.

For episode 270 of Yapping Yankees, I yap all about the final stretch of episodes for this show, the quiet-at-first but ultimately eventful Winter Meetings and its aftermath except for the dormant Yanks, the bigger moves I'd still like to see, and which big trade/signing rumors we most expect to still actually happen!
BT unleashes his frustration over the disappointing 2025 MLB offseason for both the Yankees and Mets, comparing the lack of major moves to a "snowball fight" that never materialized. He dissects the confusing state of both New York cores, noting the scarcity of solidified positions for either club. Tierney lays out the Yankees' dilemma: relying on a "phenomenal" rotation (Cole, Freed, Schlittler, McClain) while simultaneously "praying" that the price doesn't go up on Cody Bellinger. He argues that acquiring only a pitcher like Michael King is not an acceptable plan. For the Mets, the chaos is clearer: a dismantled core with "a million questions" at every turn, including the ongoing possibility of a Francisco Lindor trade and the debate over the future of prospects like Ben Rice at first base. BT concludes that the clock is running out, and a "very dark and very empty offseason" is becoming a frightening reality for New York baseball.
Brandon Tierney dives into the Yankees' confusing offseason, contrasting their muddled vision with the Mets' clear rebuilding plan. The discussion immediately focuses on Cody Bellinger, whom BT desperately wants back for his versatile, "low-maintenance" qualities that echo championship-era Yankees. However, BT draws a hard line, arguing that the Yankees must not get "out of whack" and offer Bellinger an excessive, career-killing eight-year contract, warning that repeating the mistakes made with Stanton and Hicks will perpetuate the team's "dead money" cycle. A caller elevates the stakes, declaring that if the Yankees fail to re-sign Bellinger, it's time to "reevaluate the whole front office."

And Evan Roberts dives into what the Yankees' selecting a player in the Rule 5 Draft means for the offseason outlook.
Boomer & Gio and BT & Sal are all wondering the same thing: why have the Yankees been so quiet this offseason? Plus, Sal suggests Nice Hoerner as a good fit for the Bronx Bombers; a caller asks who will win the World Series first: the Yankees or Mets? And Evan Roberts dives into what the Yankees' selecting a player in the Rule 5 Draft means for the offseason outlook.
In the “Pete Rose episode,” Dan Fox and Frank Knight open with baseball—and the conversation turns quickly into a full-on Mets identity check. With Pete Alonso gone, Nimmo traded for Marcus Semien, and Edwin Díaz landing with the Dodgers, Frank tries to keep the panic in check: it's “wait-and-see” season in Queens. The guys debate whether this is a strategic reset or the start of a rebuild, whether committee platoons (including Jeff McNeil) can really work, and whether the Mets should push hard for Juan Soto now or wait for free agency—assuming Uncle Stevie's wallet stays open.Over in Philly, Dan reacts to the Phillies bringing back Kyle Schwarber on a five-year deal, weighing the short-term upside (power, leadership, clubhouse presence) against the long-term risk of paying for past performance. Alan checks in on the Yankees' unusually quiet offseason, including the debate around keeping Cody Bellinger—a versatile glove with a left-handed swing made for the short porch. Then it's college football mayhem: Penn State's coaching change, Ole Miss fallout, Lane Kiffin's “big-leagues vs. king-of-the-program” decision, and the Michigan scandal that has everyone asking what the program does next. The crew also takes a hard shot at Notre Dame's independence, arguing you can't complain about playoff politics while refusing to join a conference. Finally, the episode closes with Fox Brothers Alarms, the empty inbox (again), a Survivor Pool update that now includes a Week 18 tiebreaker plan, and a pivot into the Week 14 NFL recap—anchored by a quick historical nod to December 7th as “a day that will live in infamy.”Special Thanks to:Fox Brothers Alarms - https://foxbrothersalarms.comFirst Baptist church of Phillipsburg NJ http://www.fbcpburg.org/Roof Top Innovations the leading Roofing Company in Waco, Tomball surrounding areasWe focus on all types of roofing systems, with a focus on the best quality possible.

Less than halfway through this podcast, Andy asks the assembled group if this will be the "longest episode ever." As you could probably imagine, he was right. Per usual, he's joined by Brendan!, KVV, and PJ as they finally get through the first major of 2025 for the annual Year in Review. KVV, or more accurately known as "K-J Hawk," starts off the show with a recap of the Valspar Championship. He closes out the Florida Swing with notes from Viktor Hovland's improbable win in a Sunday duel against Justin Thomas before Andy and Brendan run through the two Texas events preceding the Masters. At the Texas Children's Houston Open, Dr. Chipinski didn't make any calls late on Sunday but was able to secure a big win over Gary Woodland, Scottie Scheffler, and Alejandro Tosti. Andy also has the honor of recapping the first-ever TGL Finals during Houston week, which leads to a debate about re-naming the SoFi Dome after Billy Horschel. Brendan is tasked with detailing Brian Harman's runaway win at the Valero Texas Open, but is also sure to note that the Cleeks were "trying to become the Yankees" and plenty of other LIV news from the tour's week in Miami. The last two hours of this episode are spent recapping "the tournament of a lifetime," the 2025 Masters. Andy, Brendan, and Kevin each share the biggest moments and memories from different parts of the week, resulting in a comprehensive recap of Rory McIlroy's triumphant completion of the career grand slam. Using their on-the-ground insights and usual research findings, the three provide a detailed picture of one of the great moments in golf history. The 2025 Year in Review will return on Monday as the dawn on Don Rea inches closer and closer.
Don LaGreca joins to say he needs to wait and see what the Mets put on the field before he can get mad. What moves do you want to see the Yankees make? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
