Michelle chats with Mike Shimmens, Executive Director for 3RNET, the nation's most trusted resource for health professionals in rural and underserved communities, about an increasingly important topic in rural communities: assisting health care professionals to find jobs and careers and helping health care employers to find qualified workers. In the last four months, Shimmens says, 3RNET is seeing fewer applications from health care professionals, but it's unclear whether there is just a blip or the result of increasing burnout in this space as the pandemic continues to plague communities. Shimmens notes that many states are experiencing health professional shortages, according to HIPSA scoring that is monitored by governmental primary care offices. If you're a stakeholder in a rural or underserved area, you may want to look into the J1 visa program, he adds. On a positive note on shortages, Shimmens says, in terms of loan repayment assistance, there recently has been an infusion of $800 million into the National Health Service Corps, which is available to subsets of health professionals, as well as from state agencies. 3RNET, a nonprofit, is a valuable resource for its members in this area as well, providing educational information and job listings. If you're an employer that wants to participate in this effort, you can reach out to a 3RNET network coordinator in your state, explains Shimmens. This episode is sponsored by 3RNET. Whether you're looking for a job or searching for the perfect candidate, 3RNET is here to help. Get started today at 3RNET.org.

The year 2020 was a good one for a relatively new, independent, social service organization focused on helping Haverhill youth at risk.Leaving the Streets Ministry, founded by Chaplain Jesus Ruiz and his wife Wanda, is working to redirect young people in danger of becoming high school drop outs, or choosing a life of gangs and drugs that could lead to prison.“All we really want to do is serve the community, serve the broken, serve the youth that have backgrounds, that have records, kids that don't have families. They're broken, pretty much. Give them a chance of employment, a chance on a place to live that through resources they are able to get a chance move forward in life, and not be stuck in this gang world,” he says.Ruiz says the year 2020 was a success in finding jobs for so many young.“I'm so excited of the opportunities that God has been providing. We actually got 250 jobs this year. We have so much work and that's through the COVID. It's just been amazing. We broke our record from last year which was at 167, and last year we didn't even have the center,” Ruiz says. The Leaving the Streets Ministry Center is at 117 Lafayette St., Haverhill. Ruiz says it makes it easier for people to come in the build their resume, create a cover letter and put them on a path toward employment“We don't just want to get them a job, we want to get them a job they'll be comfortable with. Certain individuals, certain high-risk youth that we work with—they need to be placed at a certain job. We get kids from all different backgrounds, kids that suffer from depression, kids that have certain anxieties, kids who can't stand still so we try to find the right employment for them. We are actually up to 250 jobs and we have over 40 positions available. A lot of the positions we get are in the Haverhill area, like Ward Hill—a lot of warehouse jobs, restaurant, assembly line equipment, factories. The owners work with us on giving these young adults a chance just to move forward in life,” he says. And along with helping find employment, Leaving the Streets Ministry also helps fight food insecurity – and assisted Santa Claus at Christmas“We were driving around the city, passing out gifts to families that were struggling financially. So many families we were serving. They were just so grateful, and tired of the life they were living. It was just so amazing to watch the fire inside of them just leaving the gang world, leaving the street life and wanting to do better. Just a chance, you know, and it's just like I tell them, ‘I'll give you a chance to move forward in life but it's up to you what you do with it.'”There is more information at LeavingTheStreetsMinistry.network.Support the show (https://whav.net/become-a-whav-member/)

Today, I have the great pleasure of sharing my conversation with HR specialist, entrepreneur, and executive Diana George. Reach out to Diana over email (solutions@bygeorgehr.com) and on https://www.linkedin.com/in/dianalgeorge/ (Linkedin). Today we had a great conversation. We started off talking about being a parent and learning to help develop your children up in effective ways that maintain a great relationship with them. We also talk about the importance of seeing your own potential and finding someone who also sees your potential. That's what parents are supposed to do. We then talk about being an HR professional and what it means to do that. Surprisingly, a lot of skills fostered by being a parent translate to being a great HR professional. We then talk about setting great boundaries with your home and work life (especially since the two are so blended now). Finally we spend some time chatting about how someone might go about finding new employment in these COVID 19 days. It was a great conversation and I got a lot out of it. Diana also left us some action items: Find your purpose 2. Be Intentional Get into action If you enjoyed today's episode (or not), let me know on the socials. The topic of today’s episode is LinkedIn Opportunities for Your Business. With over half a billion users, LinkedIn is the biggest opportunity to connect with not only your peers but potential employers and selling/marketing your products and services. The Setup – What’s in a Name The first order of business is to complete your profile as it offers several key branding and searchable elements. There is the availability to add an image at the top of your profile. Add one that depicts you as an individual or your business. Profile image. So many profiles I’ve come across just have the ghost image. Avoid that if you can, granted OPSEC can be a legitimate concern, but by adding a face you literally are adding a face to your name and business. The image should represent who you are. Some suggest professional suit and tie, but if that isn’t you, the real you, why pretend? I do recommend adding your real name as it adds authenticity to your brand. Again OPSEC comes in to play understandably, but even if you could do the first name, last name initial is better than a fictitious name like Hugh Erection (yes that is an actual name someone is using on LinkedIn, and incidentally, on Facebook). The Headline section is very important, don’t skip this part. The headline is a good opportunity to introduce yourself – who you are and what do you do. The Headline also helps with you being found in LinkedIn search. For example, adding in social media consultant, protective services professional in the Headline will help your profile being found in the search results when a person searches for those keyword phrases. Another area in LinkedIn profiles that I’ve seen lacking information is the Contact Information. You can add phone numbers, email, and links to websites and other social media accounts. You can customize the links so that it’s memorable and brand-specific. Other information to add to your profile – summary, work history, schools, training, recommendations, and skills. Don’t misinform or embellish. Run the option play An option, not a requirement, but one that I recommend, is to upgrade to LinkedIn Premium. Premium unlocks certain services that you can take advantage of such as LinkedIn Learning, which is an online education hub. As well as access to job and salary data and other features like who is looking at your profile. Making the Connection I would suggest that you be strategic – try not to get overwhelmed. Your focus should be on what companies may need your products and services. Follow the company, owners, founders, and employees. Connecting with peers on LinkedIn is really a given, but still, be strategic about your choices on whom to connect with. Ask yourself – will this person provide me with value to help me or my business grow and vice versa; what or who is it that we have in common? Is this a future networking opportunity? In other words, don’t connect with everybody – keep in mind your goals for your business. Finding Jobs, Comparative Analysis Finding jobs isn’t hard on LinkedIn – being qualified is the difficult part. Look at jobs you’re interested in – what are the requirements? How can you achieve those requirements? What training is necessary? From a service provider or products supplier look at these jobs as a way to determine what the company is lacking – compare your services to the company’s needs. LinkedIn Job search is among the best whether you are looking for a job or looking for your target market by looking at the qualifications and requirements for a job. For example, I searched for an executive protection specialist in the United States. After clicking on the job position for Snap Inc. you can see more detail on the second page. Look at the qualifications and requirements. Questions to ask yourself – is this job something my or my business qualify to provide these services? Do you fulfill what the job entails? Does anyone I know work there, how can I get more information on the company? Is there a high turnover? Can I position my company to fit their needs? What is the pay? With LinkedIn Premium you are provided with deeper analysis with information about other applicants who’ve applied for this position, the average tenure at this company, and hiring growth. Content Marketing I hope you’re getting the idea that LinkedIn is full of opportunities. An excellent way to draw attention to yourself (i.e. become known) and your company is by sharing information. Your content or other people’s content. Whether it is video, images or the written word, content is the best way that I know of for your market to know, like and trust your brand. A trusted source of knowledge. On LinkedIn, there are several ways to share content. The most prevalent is the news feed of LinkedIn. Here you can post/share content – not content for content sake but strategic valuable information for your market. You can upload your videos or share videos from YouTube. If you’re uploading videos, they have to be less than 10 minutes in length. Preface your content with a sentence or two on why it is relevant to your target market. Add relevant hashtags as they are searchable. Late last year LinkedIn introduced the ability to upload documents to share in the news feed. So, this could be a checklist, a how-to, a giveaway or cheat sheet of some sort. LinkedIn articles are created on LinkedIn and can be shared to Twitter and Facebook. Articles are great for long-form content, connections do get notified although that is based on the algorithm. Articles are also automatically added to the news feed. LinkedIn Live was announced last year. It gives you the ability to be live via video – aka live streaming directly on LinkedIn – both on mobile and desktop. Right now, Live is in early release to influencers to test and give feedback, but I’d suspect Live being fully released to all users by end of this year. Live streaming enables you to get real-time comments, it is also great for connecting with your audience, Q&A helps to fuel your content and marketing efforts, etc. Whatever content you are sharing or creating – remember your market and your goals. Advertising Advertising on LinkedIn – cost per click is expensive compared to Google and Facebook Ads – think dollars vs. cents. Our advertising on LinkedIn hasn’t been as successful as we had hoped, but that is just what our experience has been, not to discourage you. Ads will be seen on the feed and on the right sidebar on desktop, and the feed on mobile. Company Pages LinkedIn company pages recently had a makeover where it is more like a Facebook page. You have branding opportunities here with the banner at the top, logo for the profile image, a brief headline section describing the business, and call to action buttons. Add information to the About and People section. You can add company updates here such as new training, services products, etc. I recommend that you visit other pages – competition or your target market. Follow the page to get notifications, take a look at their jobs, who works there that you may know. LinkedIn will let you know any connections who work at the company. Connect with the owners of the company and introduce yourself via messaging.

Right. That remote job search if you will, we're not talking about remote work at home. But how do I find a job say my wife and I talk a lot about Italy. How would I find a job in Italy? Yeah, I can't speak to international moves, but I can't speak to interstate moves within the US. And so I imagine it's going to be similar, obviously with international moves. You've got a whole lot of layers to get through, and I have no. Yeah. And we're permit exactly all that so into every country is different. I back many years ago, I was looking at the possibility of moving to France and looking at their requirements. I happened to find a website about how to be an illegal alien in France. And I didn't think that was a good idea. So all different countries have different rules. And there's a lot of research that goes into that, that I only done some and I'm not really up on that. But I can talk about the interstate moves or even interested. If you're for example, your your living in southern California, and you wanna move to northern California. There are things that you can do to set that up. Well while in fact, you actually relocated to Portland from somewhere else. Right and vice versa. Yes, he ended up finding workout estate and that just exactly worked out for you. But the idea, here is that you deliberately have a purpose for relocating somewhere. Exactly. So when I when I was in California, I wanted to come back home to Portland, because this is where I grew up. I have felt for some time that this is a really good fit for me here. And so I wanted to get back into that to primarily detested is, in fact, where I belong, and of course, things have gone. Well, since I came back, there are a few things that I tell people when they when they asked me, how do I get a job in another city? There are some things that you want to be prepared for. And the first one is be able to talk about. Why, why are you reload relocating to a new place or in my case to an old place? A place where you used to be that haven't been for awhile, and it's not because you want to make up a story. It's that you want to sound confident in telling your story. So I tell people practice practice your story, so you can be concise, so you can. Make it sound as compelling for the other person. And as you feel it is for yourself and that way, they don't think that you're just making it up just to get a job because that sense of desperation doesn't make anybody look good. And you're confident in your communication makes them confident in you. Yes and also allows them to see okay if I do pay for the relocation or not, I might have to go get the funds for that. And if this guy's good enough or gal I might consider paying for that, that relocation sheri-, and now getting that attention in the first place being able t...

It's Tristan Layfield of Layfield Resume Consulting, and I've teamed up with Living Corporate to bring you all a weekly career tip. Today we're gonna talk about how to find a job in a new location. Sometimes we find ourselves in a position where we want or need to move to a new city, but one of the hardest things to narrow down is a new job, so I'm gonna provide a few suggestions to get you well on your way. #1, localize your hiring info. Maybe you have an address in the new city or maybe you'll have a friend that will allow you to use theirs. Put that on your resume and application. Recruiters narrow down their searches using geographical locations, and many in larger cities rarely entertain out-of-state candidates, so by changing your address you have a better chance of being seen. This tip also applies to your LinkedIn profile, and if you're worried about your phone number giving you away, then get a Google Voice number with a local area code. #2, attend regional conferences and events. Many organizations that have national conferences typically host regional conferences and events as well. Try to get to the city and attend those, as they will be filled with people who are in your industry and in the city you're trying to move to. So make some connections, and then begin leveraging them by setting up informational interviews, fostering real relationships, and maybe even asking for a referral. #3, spell out your move in your cover letter. So for those who can't localize their info or can't get to those regional conferences and events, you want to spell out your move in your cover letter. Many employers may assume that you just seeking relocation fees, which you might be, or that you're just sending your resume across the country, so you want to make sure that you calm their fears by starting your cover letter with something like, "As I prepare for my cross-country relocation to XYZ City." This is short, sweet, and gets the job done up front. Finding a new job in a new city can be a tad bit difficult, but if you prepare before going on your job search, you can make the process a bit more manageable and potentially land that job in the city where you want to move. This tip was brought to you by Tristan of Layfield Resume Consulting. Check us out on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @LayfieldResume, or connect with me, Tristan Layfield, on LinkedIn.

If you don't have it, you've probably asked yourself whether you should have pet insurance for when the unexpected happens. Take-Your-Dog-To-Work-Day Now Includes Snakes and Pigs As take-your-dog-to-work-day becomes the everyday norm in many offices; owners of less common pets have begun to demand equality. If dogs are welcome at work, then others feathered, furry, winged and scaly companions should be allowed at the office too although some co-workers don't agree. Snakes are allowed at the Seattle headquarters of Amazon.com. About 8% of U.S. companies allow pets at work, and the practice seems to be especially prevalent among tech firms. Read More…

Immediately after, our community will continue the conversation on #TChat Twitter from 7-8 pm ET. Last week we talked about fun and games in team-building and employee engagement activities, and this week we’re going to have fun searching and applying for jobs on our smart phones. Really, we are. A recent Recruiting Trends survey finds more than 40% of recruiters have received an application using a mobile or tablet device. Also, LinkedIn and Prudential recently told Bersin by Deloitte that more than 50% of candidates find jobs through their mobile devices. These recruiting times they are a-changin’ by rockin’ the mobile. Join #TChat co-creators and hosts Meghan M. Biro and Kevin W. Grossman as we discuss the subject with our good friends this wk: Jessica Miller-Merrell, SPHR, Founder and Chief Blogger of Blogging4Jobs, and Rayanne Thorn, VP of Product Marketing and Strategy for Technomedia, a global talent management solutions provider. This will be another important #TChat show about how mobile continues to change recruiting and job search!
