"Parent, child vaccine rates focus of OHSU study Clark County Public Health urges staying up to date on shots Children with a parent who received a flu vaccine are nearly twice as likely to be fully vaccinated by 2 years old, compared with children whose parent did not receive a flu vaccine, according to a new study by Oregon Health & Science University. These findings come as Clark County Public Health officials urge children and adults to stay up-to-date on COVID-19 booster and flu vaccines as the county heads into what may be a particularly harsh flu season. Health officials are also predicting more severe cases of viral respiratory illnesses this fall, with the full-time return to in-person learning following pandemic lockdowns. In Clark County, routine childhood vaccination rates have declined since 2019, causing some concern for public health officials. Based on numbers in the Portland metro area, as well as national numbers, many children are under-immunized, Dr. Katie Sharff, chief of infectious disease at Kaiser Permanente Northwest, said last month. “(Vaccination) is one of the best things we do in medicine,” Clark County Public Health Director Dr. Alan Melnick previously said. “Vaccines are the No. 1 thing that has increased life expectancy.” TRENDING NOW Megastorms are coming to the Pacific Northwest Editor's ChoiceNovember 7, 2022 Clark County mulls new public safety deal with ilani Clark County NewsNovember 5, 2022 Rising rents create a conundrum in Clark County BusinessNovember 5, 2022 Melnick recommends parents who have concerns about vaccines talk with a pediatrician. OHSU's new research on the association between parent-child vaccination status aimed to identify factors that contribute to receiving vaccines and how to increase vaccination rates, according to a press release from OHSU. “We know that there are certain factors that hinder children from receiving routine vaccinations, which puts them at risk of serious illness or even death from diseases, many of which are entirely preventable,” Heather Angier, affiliate assistant professor of family medicine at OHSU School of Medicine, said in the press release. “This research is important because having a deeper understanding of factors that affect this issue, including parents' beliefs about vaccines and their vaccination status, is key to increasing vaccination rates among children.” For more information on recommended vaccines, talk to your pediatrician or visit cdc.gov/vaccines. For more information on where to get a flu vaccine or a COVID-19 booster, visit vaccines.gov or contact your health care provider. I have a special episode of the podcast this week. I'm sharing an interview I did on holistic dentistry inside the Hormone Healing Membership* with Dr. Kelly Blodgett. Dr. Blodgett is a native Oregonian who attended grade school through high school in Southwest Portland. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Oregon and completed his pre-doctoral sciences at Portland State University. Dr. Blodgett attended the OHSU School of Dentistry and graduated in June of 1999 where he earned the “Going the Extra Mile” award from his own classmates. Throughout his career, he's become a recognized leader in minimally-invasive dentistry, dental lasers, computerized dental technology, and holistic care. He has been featured in numerous dental journals, on television, and in magazines for the innovative care he provides. He is truly a modern pioneer in progressive dental care. Dr. Blodgett and his wife, Julie, have been married since 1994 and have two beautiful daughters: Sara, born in 2002, and Megan, born in 2005. They reside in Southwest Portland, just up the hill from his high school alma mater, Wilson High School. The reason Dr. Blodgett's work is so appealing to me is because of how he truly takes the word holistic to heart. He wants to know everything he can about a patient and take the whole person, their mental/emotional/physical health history, and how they feel into consideration when advising. Advising is the keyword here. He wants his patients to decide what is best and fully respects each and every decision. That's not easy to find, even in functional medicine. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!*If you're wondering what this membership is, it's a special space on the internet for those that have gone through the Master Your Minerals course and want more support. Two recent studies conducted at Oregon Health and Science University give some answers to questions about variants and vaccines. One study shows that people who have been infected with COVID-19, and therefore have natural immunity, are still vulnerable to new variants. And the Pfizer vaccine can help protect people with natural immunity against variants. At the same time, another study showed that the Pfizer vaccine is less effective at offering protection against variants in general than it is against the “wild-type” strain of the virus that originated the pandemic. This means people will probably have to get booster shots at some point. Marcel Curlin is an associate professor of medicine within OHSU's infectious disease division and co-senior author of both studies. He says the hope is that we can learn to live with the coronavirus in the same way we live with influenza. We hear from Curlin and co-senior author Fikadu Tafesse, who is also an assistant Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the OHSU School of Medicine.

Leading sportswear brand Nike has repurposed its shoe and apparel materials to produce full-face shields and other protective medical equipment for healthcare workers in the United States. As part of Nike's pandemic response, the company has worked with medical experts from the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) to manufacture Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Nike patterned its output from the face shields currently used at OHSU. OHSU health professionals tested the prototypes and approved the final product for mass production. Nike made use of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), collar padding, and cords to create the face shields. These materials were previously used for making Nike Air soles, shoes, and apparel, respectively. In a press release, Nike said it wanted to not only produce high-quality face shields but also develop an efficient production process. People from Nike's Innovation Teams and Air Manufacturing Innovation (Air MI) facilities collaborated to streamline the process. Air MI's decades of experience in creating different kinds of TPU products made it easier to seamlessly adapt to manufacturing PPE while also complying with government guidelines. Miko Enomoto, an associate professor from the OHSU School of Medicine, explained the importance of Nike's initiative. She said the lack of protective gear compromises the health of frontline medical workers, which could potentially put the healthcare workforce under strain in the coming months. She added that full-face shields can prolong the usability of surgical or N95 masks. Nike shipped its first batch of full-face shields and other protective medical equipment to OHSU in April, and it will continue sending PPE to health facilities across the United States.

Dr. Bill Blatchford developed a large and profitable practice in Corvallis, Oregon starting in 1970. Dentist would come to visit to see what he was doing . He was also asked to speak at meetings all over the US and Canada. It developed into a business coaching dentist how to live a healthy life style and to develop a practice to support their life, not the other way around where life is what is left over. He has spoken at every major dental meeting in North America and many other countries including India, Dubai, Egypt, England, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand. He and his wife Carolyn have been married 52 years. They raised two daughters, Tiffany and Christina. Dr. Christina has followed him into dentistry and now is the owner of Blatchford Solutions. Bill and his wife enjoy traveling, adventure trips, cycling, skiing, fishing, boating, physical fitness. He and Carolyn spend winters at their home in Mexico and summers on their boat on the BC coast and Alaska. Bill has recently started Blatchford Transitions helping dentist buying, selling and merging practices. Before becoming co CEO of Blatchford Solutions with my Dad two years ago, I had several different careers leading me down this path. My parents were encouraging and supportive of any direction, as long as it was forward, that I chose to take in my career. I chose a degree in Fashion Merchandising, my Dad says I majored in shopping! from the University of Arizona. Working as a sales associate at Nordstrom for a year, I learned much about sales and myself. Retail did not allow me to have the life balance so I chose another degree in Commercial Interior Design and worked in this field for five years. I designed medical and dental offices and I enjoyed the creativity this allowed. Yet, I was still seeking more. I craved being able to make a difference in the lives of others plus the lifestyle I had seen my Dad provide our family. Additionally, I had come to the conclusion that I was unemployable. I wanted to be my own boss and make the big decisions, all signs pointed to a career in dentistry. Growing up, I was able to see that my Dad was able to provide a full life for our family. I saw dentistry as a great profession. It was during my childhood, I saw the changes in him as he wanted more time with us and to pursue his interests. He wanted more return and to share the wealth with his team. This lead to the creation of Blatchford Solutions, one of the most trusted Coaching Programs for dental practices today. I purchased my first practice as soon as I graduated OHSU School of Dentistry. I also am very fortunate to get to raise Grace, age 7, with my husband, Dave. After success as a dentist, I started coaching some clients and found it is just the best feeling ever to coach our Doctors to reach and succeed further than they thought possible! As I have grown into the co CEO position, I feel strongly in continuing to practice dentistry. I feel it gives our program a new relevancy. My experience mirrors that of new practice owners with new ideas, new excitement and new energy, along with a new vision for the business. My plan is to help my dad take Blatchford Solutions to the next level of dental business coaching. With new ideas, new programs, new seminars, new growth, my question to you is…….are you ready to take your life and practice to the next level?
