Oral health isn't just about having a nice smile; it's essential for our overall health, impacting different areas of our well-being. Similarly, when considering breast implants, it's crucial to recognize that their impact extends beyond cosmetic enhancement, potentially affecting overall health. Understanding the interplay between oral health and systemic health is vital for making informed decisions about medical interventions and ensuring holistic well-being. Embark on a journey through the world of holistic health and dental care with insights from Dr. Kelly Blodgett – a biologic dentist from Portland, Oregon. In today's episode, we discuss the intricate connection between oral and overall health, the impact of environmental factors, and the importance of informed decision-making for optimal well-being. Oral health and gut microbiome, with a focus on root canals and biofilms I deeply resonate with the principles Dr. Blodgett upholds, especially regarding oral health practices, particularly in patients with conditions like breast implant illness. Many patients are on a journey to rid their bodies of foreign substances that could potentially trigger inflammation, and biologic dentistry offers valuable insights and techniques to support them along this path. While it's widely acknowledged in both the dental and medical communities that gum disease is a significant issue, the attention it receives sometimes overshadows other potential sources of inflammation. Dr. Blodgett has observed the risk associated with root canals. The process of performing a root canal effectively creates a dead organ within the body by removing the tooth's blood supply. What's concerning is that the porous nature of the dentin surface allows microbes to infiltrate and thrive within these teeth, essentially turning them into chronic sources of toxicity. Over the years, Dr. Blodgett has seen remarkable improvements in patients' overall health following the removal of these dead teeth. We've integrated PCR testing of scar capsules into our practice which examines DNA fragments and this approach has yielded great results. Dr. Blodgett highlights the significance of understanding biofilm formation, particularly concerning teeth that no longer have a blood supply due to procedures like root canals. In an upcoming series based on 900 consecutive samples, we found that approximately 30 to 34% exhibited biofilm colonization, consisting of various microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and mycobacteria. This microbial presence within the roots suggests a significant deviation from what's considered normal. Despite efforts to ensure quality testing by sending samples to a research-based laboratory specializing in PCR testing, there remain limitations in detecting microscopic processes through macroscopic examinations like CT scans, MRIs, or regular X-rays. Furthermore, Dr. Blodgett emphasizes the interconnectedness of oral health with overall well-being, noting how disruptions in the oral microbiome can contribute to various systemic problems. Issues such as poor digestion, irregular bowel movements, and compromised nutrient absorption can stem from an imbalanced microbiome, impacting the body's ability to heal and function optimally. Oral health and hygiene, including protein intake and its impact on teeth Maintaining normal digestive processes is crucial for overall health, as it impacts our gut microbiome and downstream health outcomes. The intricate relationship between oral health and the gut microbiome is fascinating insofar as oral health isn't just about aesthetics or chewing food; it's integral to proper digestion and nutrient absorption. For instance, missing teeth can hinder the chewing process, affecting how well we break down food and utilize nutrients. Managing the oral microbiome thus involves navigating various factors that can impact it. Common practices, like consuming acidic beverages or having multiple metal fillings, can disrupt the delicate balance of the mouth's ecology. It is therefore necessary to address these issues proactively rather than turning a blind eye. Addressing these issues involves considering the energetic and biological implications of dental treatments and materials used, as well as acknowledging potential sensitivities individuals may have to certain substances. By adopting a more holistic approach to oral care, we can better support both oral and systemic health. Oral health and its impact on overall health, including the importance of proper dental care and the risks of poor oral hygiene Many individuals are transitioning towards a more natural and holistic approach to well-being, especially those who have undergone procedures like breast augmentation or reconstruction and are now considering removing breast implants. In my practice, I emphasize the importance of dietary adjustments, including cutting out gluten, dairy, and processed sugars, to support overall health and well-being. These dietary changes are crucial as sugar, in particular, can be highly addictive and detrimental to health, impacting brain function and energy levels. That is why I always encourage clients to maintain a balanced fluid intake, neither overly acidic nor alkaline. During the preparation phase, I focus on increasing protein intake while cutting out unhealthy carbohydrates and fats. Digestive enzymes are also provided to aid in protein digestion, preventing gut discomfort and fermentation. Although I don't have a specific diet regimen, I advocate for a higher protein intake tailored to individual needs, typically ranging from one and a half to two and a half grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. This adjustment may require creative solutions for those struggling to meet their protein goals, such as incorporating amino acid supplements or protein-rich smoothies. In terms of oral health, dietary adjustments and fluid intake can have a significant impact. For example, high-protein diets may lead to buildup on teeth surfaces, as observed during teeth cleaning sessions. While protein intake remains essential for optimal functioning, managing its effects on oral health requires attention to hygiene and possibly adjustments in dental care routines. In surgeries, dentists often check for dental problems. If there's an issue, like infection or inflammation, the surgery might be postponed due to the risk of bacterial spread and potential complications like endocarditis. However, the sad truth is that despite longstanding awareness of these risks, they're not always taken seriously. This shows the need for greater emphasis on oral health in overall health management. Dental implants and cancer risk, with a focus on root canals and lymphatic drainage The standards set by organizations like the American Heart Association highlight the risks associated with microbial exposure in dental procedures. Surgeries involving heart valves, knee replacements, and hip joints pose risks because they share the same lymphatic drainage and blood supply pathways as the mouth. Despite this knowledge, the potential risks of microbial exposure from procedures like root canals are often overlooked. In fact, there are cases that show that addressing sources of toxicity, such as root canals, can lead to remarkable improvements in health, including relief from symptoms like cancer. Moreover, while titanium implants have been hailed as effective tooth replacements, they can lead to peri-implantitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and bone loss around the implant. This inflammation can have systemic effects, particularly in individuals already prone to inflammation, such as those with breast implants or joint issues. Despite the potential risks, there's often a lack of scrutiny within the dental profession regarding the broader systemic implications of these procedures. Health issues related to plastic water bottles, pesticides, heavy metals, and gluten sensitivity The environment we live in exposes us to various toxins like phthalates from plastic water bottles, glyphosate from pesticide-laden foods, and heavy metals from contaminated groundwater. Each person's response to these exposures is unique, influenced by factors like their genetic makeup and lifestyle choices. As a healthcare provider, listening to patients' personal anecdotes and understanding their history and exposures can provide valuable insights into their health challenges. Through attentive listening and assessment, healthcare professionals can better support patients in navigating their health journey. Detoxification, air quality, product safety, and optimizing oral health for overall wellness Understanding the impact of toxins on our health, especially considering individual genetics and vulnerabilities, is crucial. Lifestyle factors like poor diet, lack of sleep, and exposure to harmful substances can disrupt our body's detoxification processes, particularly affecting women due to their sensitive endocrine systems. Improving diet and lifestyle habits can have a profound impact on overall health, including oral and gut health, empowering individuals to initiate positive changes for themselves and their families. Thankfully, you can take proactive steps such as using resources like the Environmental Working Group website (https://www.ewg.org/) to make informed choices about the products they use, including dental care items. Addressing air quality is also crucial, especially in areas prone to mold and pollution, as poor air quality can have significant health implications. While filtered water is widely recognized as essential, filtered air is often overlooked but equally important for overall well-being. Understanding and improving air quality can have a profound impact on health, particularly for those sensitive to environmental factors like pollen and pollutants. Implementing air filtration systems in dental offices has become increasingly important, especially in light of concerns about virus and bacteria transmission. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted many dental offices to invest in quality air filters to significantly improve air quality and reduce exposure to harmful aerosols, leading to positive changes in workplace safety measures. Moreover, addressing environmental factors like water quality and avoiding potentially harmful products can contribute to overall health and well-being. Considering individuals' sensitivities and using tests like Biocompatibility to determine the least reactive dental products can help minimize adverse reactions and ensure better outcomes for patients. As a child of the “wild west,” he was born with an adventurous spirit. One of the reasons that he was drawn to plastic surgery is the constant innovation. In the field of plastic surgery, with innovative techniques and technologies developed each year, there are simply issues for which a solution has yet to be invented. Dr. Whitfield tempers his intrepid attitude with Midwestern pragmatism. It makes for a pretty winning combination.

55: Things I Wish I Would Have Known 30 Years Ago, but I know them now! Episode 4: Taking better care of my teeth can lower my risk of cancer. And according to Dr. Kelly Blodgett, that doesn't only mean brushing or flossing. He explained in our podcast that high-quality saliva leads to a healthier body. How do I improve the quality of my saliva? Find ten to fifteen minutes per day of peace. How does this help your oral health? When you start to relax, your blood flow is better all over your body, including your mouth. When the blood flow is good to your mouth, your saliva improves, which will then impact your gut health. When your gut health is better, YOUR HEALTH IMPROVES! I encourage you to listen to our episode, Can Root Canals Contribute to Cancer Risk? Cut back on sugar and alcohol. Don't drink super-hot beverages (darn it! Some studies show it's got four times the vitamin E compared to beef. Lower in calories and cholesterol. It is lower fat, so it will cook faster than ground beef. I have a special episode of the podcast this week. I'm sharing an interview I did on holistic dentistry inside the Hormone Healing Membership* with Dr. Kelly Blodgett. Dr. Blodgett is a native Oregonian who attended grade school through high school in Southwest Portland. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Oregon and completed his pre-doctoral sciences at Portland State University. Dr. Blodgett attended the OHSU School of Dentistry and graduated in June of 1999 where he earned the “Going the Extra Mile” award from his own classmates. Throughout his career, he's become a recognized leader in minimally-invasive dentistry, dental lasers, computerized dental technology, and holistic care. He has been featured in numerous dental journals, on television, and in magazines for the innovative care he provides. He is truly a modern pioneer in progressive dental care. Dr. Blodgett and his wife, Julie, have been married since 1994 and have two beautiful daughters: Sara, born in 2002, and Megan, born in 2005. They reside in Southwest Portland, just up the hill from his high school alma mater, Wilson High School. The reason Dr. Blodgett's work is so appealing to me is because of how he truly takes the word holistic to heart. He wants to know everything he can about a patient and take the whole person, their mental/emotional/physical health history, and how they feel into consideration when advising. Advising is the keyword here. He wants his patients to decide what is best and fully respects each and every decision. That's not easy to find, even in functional medicine. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!*If you're wondering what this membership is, it's a special space on the internet for those that have gone through the Master Your Minerals course and want more support. Did you know that the oral cavity has the second largest and most diverse microbiota after the gut, harboring over 700 species of bacteria? The progression of health or regression toward disease is critically influenced by the microbiota. In addition to being the initiation point of digestion, the oral microbiome is crucial in maintaining both oral and systemic health. The oral microbiome rests within biofilms throughout the oral cavity and forms an ecosystem that maintains health in a state of homeostasis. However, particular imbalances in this state of equilibrium allow pathogens to develop and cause disease. This disruption of the oral microbiome leads to dysbiosis, which is an imbalance in the microbial community that is associated with a myriad of diseases -- most of which show up in various organs and systems throughout our entire body!In this episode, you will be learning about the multitude of negative downstream health effects of a dysbiotic oral cavity and why more of your health and wellness begins in your mouth than you may have previously thought. We will also go through the photobiomodulation research on oral health, where you will see that there are countless ways that red light therapy can help optimize your oral hygiene and oral "vigor." Lastly, you will hear about the newest piece of red light therapy technology that was developed specifically for the mouth and oral health. - Dr. Mike Belkowski talks about the following: An innovative way to use red light therapy for oral health How the oral biome impacts a multitude of health systems How connected your oral health is to gut health 70% or more of the immune system is located in the gut; however, immunity begins in the mouth Cardiovascular health A link between bacteria that causes both gum disease and Alzheimer's in the brain The direct correlation between poor dental health, tooth pain, bleeding gums, and anxiety/ depression The endocrine system Obesity and its link to the oral microbiome Nitric oxide production, how it supports the body's natural repair processes, and how red light therapy helps with it Diets that support the gut microbiome More electrons = less inflammation; ways to get free electrons Factors that affect the oral microbiome such as how you were born Photobiomodulation research as it relates to oral health (see works cited below) How the power of light reduces pain, improves quality of life, and improves functionality Low level laser therapy (LLLT) and how it is an effective treatment for canker sores, oral health, and more The Guardian - BioLight's newest red light therapy product that improves oral health - The Guardian is the first red light therapy oral care device of its kind, with patent-pending technology that implements dual LEDs, giving you the healing power from both red and near-infrared (NIR) light! - To learn even more about how you can improve your health via your oral microbiome, check out The Dental Diet, by Dr. Steven Lin or Heal Your Oral Microbiome, by Cass Nelson-Dooley. - Pre-order The Guardian here! - Listen to the Dr. Kelly Blodgett episode on oral health here - Works Cited Cronshaw, Mark et al. “Photobiomodulation and Oral Mucositis: A Systematic Review.” Dentistry journal vol. 8,3 87. 5 Aug. 2020, doi:10.3390/dj8030087 Uslu MÖ, Akgül S. In this week’s episode of Food, Freedom, and Fertility, Caitlin and Sophia welcome special guest, Dr. Kelly J. Blodgett, DMD, NMD, IBDM, to discuss his holistic approach to oral health and how oral health can impact fertility. Dr. Blodgett specializes in biological dentistry, taking a holistic approach to oral health. His practice in Portland, OR just celebrated 20 years in business! So what is biological dentistry you ask? The main difference between biological and traditional dentistry is that, while traditional dentistry is primarily symptoms driven, biological dentistry takes a deeper look at the interconnectedness of body systems and how infectious and energetic imbalances could be contributing to overall health and wellness. Different teeth are connected energetically to other body parts and things like infection and inflammation can alter those energetics. How many of you have been asked about your oral health during your fertility journey? Our guess...not many. Truth is, when TTC, oral health is equally as important as other aspects of your health. Dr. Bodgett’s own research comparing oral microbiomes between women with healthy births and those suffering from infertility found noticeable differences in their oral microbiome composition. A microbiome imbalance or other source of imbalance in body systems could be contributing to hormonal dysregulation. So what should I be eating to care for and protect my teeth? Dr. Blodgett recommends The Dental Diet by Dr. Steven Lin as a great place to start. It's also a good idea to limit food and drinks that degrade the enamel protecting your teeth. The biggest offenders are acidic drinks, especially those that are acidic and sweet, like kombucha or soda, or sweetened coffee drinks, which are acidic, sweet, and HOT. According to Dr. Blodgett, taking a hard look at how we balance our lives is just as important as how we physically care for our teeth! Modern life often has us turning on our sympathetic nervous system (think flight or fight response). This can lead to not only a decrease in saliva production but also encourages stress responses like teeth grinding, neither of which are great for your oral health. So try to find room for some parasympathetic activation (rest and digest!) in your life to encourage balance and good health. Instagram: @blodgettdentalcare Web: blodgettdentalcare.com

This is part 2 (a continuation of last week's Eczema Podcast episode), where Dr. Kelly Blodgett shared how hidden dental issues (such as hidden gum disease, root canals, implants, dental meridians, gum grafts, cavities and silver amalgam fillings) can affect your skin, dermatitis, and other parts of the body (research paper links are listed below). Dental issues are often overlooked. Today's guest is Dr. Kelly Blodgett, a biological and naturopathic dentist. Dr. Kelly Blodgett graduated from the American College of Integrative Medicine and Dentistry and has a Board Certification in Naturopathic Dentistry and a Board Certification in Integrative Biological Dental Medicine. (You can find Dr. Kelly Blodgett's website here: https://www.blodgettdentalcare.com. He also offers online consultations as well.) The American Academy of Periodontology also shares on their website that periodontal (gum) disease is associated with several other diseases, such as diabetes, alzheimer's, and heart disease. Like the other microbiomes of the body (gut and skin), the oral microbiome is a collection of bacteria that affects the progression of health and disease. A major 2019 study in the Journal of Oral Microbiology discovered that bacterial populations from the mouth make their way to the gut microbiota. Just as there's leaky gut, there can also be leaky mouth as well. This can alter immune responses and potentially lead to systemic diseases. Infants who have eczema are also 3 times more likely to develop tooth decay when they are 2 and 3 years old, according to this study from the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Dentistry and the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences. Cass Nelson-Dooley, MS, an ethnopharmacologist, also shared in her research that 45% of the bacteria in the mouth are also found in the gut. Oral infection can cause major issues within the rest of the body in a variety of ways. Bacteria can escape through the gums to the bloodstream, cause system-wide inflammation, and bacterial toxins that make their way throughout the body. Two of the major bacterial groups in the oral biome that can impact the rest of health most notably include Prevotella and Veillonella. Research has also shown that dental infection has been linked to nummular eczema as well.
