Is Babangida a Bad Man?I spoke with one of Nollywood's most critically acclaimed producers—known for hits like Mirror Boy, Last Flight to Abuja, and Badamasi—about Nigerian's former head of state Ibrahim Babangida, and he insists Babangida is a good man.Born in 1985 when IBB took over office, I've long held a grudge against Babangida, the man who annulled Nigeria's most peaceful election, “democratized corruption” and ordered the killing of his best friend. And why own up to his biggest mistakes now? Emelonye says it is his film that forced IBB into reflection and led directly to his apologies and confessions in his new book. From the lips of one of Nollywood's most decorated and fearless directors, I heard stories of friendship, love, and business. We also talk about how he convinced Genevieve to do Mirror Boy movie after Omotola said no, and how Omotola said yes to Last Flight to Abuja the year after. This is one of the very best conversations I have ever had! Watch or listen to the full episode at WithChude.com.Tell me what you think in the comments below. ❤Watch all new and old fill epsidoes here: www.withchude.comBuy ‘How Depression Saved My Life', #TheDailyJoy and #TheDailyVulnerable books here: shop.withchude.comDonate to the work here: partner.withchude.comPlease subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/c/chude Exclusive Patron-only Content Hosted on Acast. Growing up in certain parts of the world can be an extreme sport, with some areas being more extreme than others. For those of us who grew up in Nigeria, living with some levels of insecurity is kind of the norm. From kidnappings to carjackings, religious killings, armed banditry, ethnic clashes and more, these violent crimes have increasingly become regular signatures that characterise life in Nigeria. The odds are that majority of us have encountered such violent crimes, crimes that have brought us uncomfortably close to an encounter with death. So in this episode, we invited Omotola to join us as we shared our individual terrifying experiences with crime and insecurity, experiences that could easily have been fatal.  One thing we relearnt in this episode is that although everyone has a right and a reason to be resentful towards others and about life, we all also have a reason or two to be grateful. . . . Everyone wants to be happy and wants to have solid relationships that would last forever in turgid romance and sky care. However, challenges doesn't seem to retard in these relationships which are of course expected. As we face challenges as a couple, and especially as individuals there are certain background features absolutely responsible for sustaining the relationship or capsizing it and such features are the reactions relayed through our actions as a result of extrinsic factors majorly which ranges from stress to work or peer pressures, negative vibes and resonance from others which ripples through and most times find a way to our partners, families and friends. Our decisions are made based on emotions whether intelligently or not. Hangout with my awesome guest on this episode of the podcast as we ride on the rides of emotional exhausts and how we can navigate it effectively hence having a peaceful and prospering decision making life which transcend through all our endeavors and of course including relationship. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/societyandi/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/societyandi/support

Films from across Africa, Australia, the Americas, and Europe are seamlessly woven into its expansive programming mix. Even the higher end of television fare is carefully fitted into the already packed cinematic queue. What makes the festival especially important–and not just a fun, cool happening-is the staggeringly broad range of black life and cultures to which it gives rein. Industry panels and workshops, art fairs with a special emphasis on children, and poetry and musical performances round out the filmic offerings. At a time when reductive and reactionary Negritude oozes from both the independent and mainstream American film worlds, the Pan African casts its net far and wide to serve up a delectable menu of dynamic, multilayered blackness.” Ernest Hardy (film critic, LA Weekly and New York Village Voice) PAFF collaborates with other festivals from around the world, giving us an audience that is truly local, national and international. The Wahaala Boys talk about what happened in Lekki during the End Sars protest and the lives that was lost. Many Nigerians have taken to the streets to fight against police brutalities and the violent way the special police unit responsible for fighting against robberies in the country has been treating young people in the country. Nigeria Nollywood actress Omotola took to social media to discredit the information about soldiers opening fire on protestors and the death of innocent civilians/protestors. Many people descended on her on social media with many calling her ignorant. The hashtag End Sars is still trending in Nigeria and Africa as a whole with Arsenal FC, Kanye West and Cardi B twitting in support of the movement. #EndSars #BlackTuesday #NigeriaSARS #Omotola

S4. EP14: Nollywood and Ghallywood are trash especially when compared to East African movies

The Nigerian movie industry and the millions of dollars it makes still continue to produce trash movies. Even though the picture and sound qualities have improve significantly, the story lines and the acting remain mediocre at best. It is a shame that the rich stories from the country is not told but rather a repeat of the rich kid trying to marry a poor kid story is continuously told. The Juju and blaming misfortunes on the work of the devil or spiritual interference is the story of the day with the occasional armed robbery or slay queen/ashawo story sprinkled here and there. Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola, Mercy Johnson, Kanayo Kanayo, Pater Edochie, Ramsey Noah and Desmond Elliot have all tried to raise the bar in Nollywood but it seem the bar didn't shift by much. As for the Ghanaian movie scene, it is worse than a kid's project on YouTube. Ghallywood is so bad that Ghanaians refuse to support it. Gone are the days when Nadia Buari, Jackie Appiah, Yvonne Nelson, Yvonne Okoro, Martha Ankomah, Lydia Forson, Van Vicker, John Dumelo, Majod Michel and Joselyn Dumas were gracing the screens of every home in Ghana and beyond. Today most of these actors and actresses are struggling to support their lifestyles with John Dumelo venturing into politics and Elikem Kumordzie recently telling actors to ensure they have a second job. Veteran actor Kofi Adjorlolo complained about producers refusing to pay him after working. The Wahaala Boys look at the state of movies coming out of West Africa especially Ghallywood of Ghana and Nollywood of Nigeria. #Nollywood #Ghallywood #Ghanaianmovies #Nigerianmovies

In 2019, Omotola led the hugely successful inaugural Entertainment Fair and Festival, #TEFFEST2019, in which I had the pleasure of attending. After a career-defining role in Mortal Inheritance, Omotola's portrayal won her "Best Actress in an English Speaking Movie" and "Best Actress Overall" at the 1997 THEMA (The Movie Awards). She was the youngest actress in Nigeria at this time to achieve this feat. In 2012, she starred in the Nollywood blockbuster Last Flight to Abuja which beat Hollywood blockbusters like Spiderman, Ice Age, The Avengers, and Madagascar to become the 2nd highest-grossing movie in West African cinemas in 2012. In 2013, Omotola was honoured in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world alongside Michelle Obama, Beyoncé and Kate Middleton. In 2014, she was honoured by the Nigerian government as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR for her contributions to Nigerian cinema. In 2019, Omotola received an honorary doctorate from Igbinedion University, Okada, for her contribution to entertainment arts in Nigeria. Most know Omotola from the big screen. Parkinson's campaigners Omotola Thomas, Sharon Krischer and Mariette Robijn join us for a heartfelt and lively discussion on the particular challenges facing the three million women living with Parkinson's worldwide. In an enlightening episode the group look at: • The knowledge gap – most Parkinson's research has been carried out on men. The panellists consider the consequences of this for women living with the condition, and the significant implications it could have on their diagnosis and treatment. • “Medication only works three out of four weeks” – Mariette and Omotola discuss how their monthly cycle affects their medication and why “everything will be worse during your period”. Do other women with Parkinson's have the same experience? • Motherhood – the guests reflect on family life and how Parkinson's has changed their role within it, from not being able to look after children and elderly parents as much as they'd like, to helping their children answer the question: “What's wrong with your mum?” The Parkinson's Life podcast is brought to you by Parkinson's Life (https://parkinsonslife.eu), the online lifestyle magazine for the global Parkinson's community, and supported by the European Parkinson's Disease Association (EPDA)(www.epda.eu.com/), the leading voice for Parkinson's in Europe.
