In this episode, we trudge through Operation Dumbo Drop, a 1995 film that somehow makes the chaos of airlifting an elephant into a war zone unbearably dull. We spotlight Tai, the real-life elephant who gave a far more compelling performance than most of the human cast. While the movie struggles to decide if it's a comedy, a war film, or a Disney fever dream, we break down exactly where it goes wrong. Plus, we dig into some behind-the-scenes movie magic and ask the ultimate question: how do you make an elephant movie this boring? The Hoofin' it in Hollywood podcast has been produced by Paul, Audrey, Melissa, and Jordan. This week it's Air Bud before Air Bud meets Million Dollar Athlete meets Operation Dumbo Drop meets the who's who of 70s television...meets a terrible movie. Well ok we didn't mean to go offsides...but this movie is bad.  This movie plays like Russell Wilson and the Broncos are playing football right now in 2023.  But it sure is interesting to discuss and see where we both felt the opportunities were. This movie lives pretty high in the zeigeist of sports films but why? Can we figure it out or do we miss the field goal completely here? It's Thanksgiving so tune in now for our review and recap of Gus from 1976.

Today on The Neil Haley Show, Neil Haley interviews Ray Liotta Intense was the word for Ray Liotta. He specialized in psychopathic characters who hide behind a cultivated charm. Even in his nice-guy roles in Field of Dreams (1989) and Operation Dumbo Drop (1995), you get the impression that something is smoldering inside of him. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, and was adopted by Mary (Edgar), a township clerk, and Alfred Liotta, an auto parts store owner. He studied acting at the University of Miami, where he became friends with Steven Bauer (Scarface (1983), Thief of Hearts (1984)). He spent his first years acting in TV: Another World (1964), a TV movie and several short-lived series. He broke into movies with the black comedy Something Wild (1986), which garnered him rave reviews. Originally unable to get a reading, he was recommended for the part by Melanie Griffith (then married to Bauer). Following the success Something Wild (1986), he received more offers in the "psycho" vein, but refused them to avoid being typecast. Instead, he made "little movies" like Dominick and Eugene (1988), which earned him standing as an actor's actor, and Field of Dreams (1989), whose success always surprised him. When he heard Martin Scorsese was casting Goodfellas (1990), he lobbied hard for the part of Henry Hill. The film's huge success brought him wide popularity and garnered him star billing in future films such as Article 99 (1992), Unlawful Entry (1992), and Unforgettable (1996).

Khmer Nationalist: Sơn Ngc Thành, the CIA, and the Transformation of Cambodia (Northern Illinois UP, 2023) is a political history of Cambodia from World War II until 1975, examining the central role of Sõn Ngoc Thành. The book is a story of nationalist movements, political intrigue, coup attempts, war, and American intelligence operations. Matthew Jagel shows how central Sõn Ngoc Thành was to the rise of Cambodian nationalism, the brief period of Japanese dominance, the fight for independence from France, and the establishment of ties with the United States. Factoring Sõn Ngoc Thành into a discussion of Cambodian political history is a major contribution that will advance scholarly discourse about Cold War politics in Southeast Asia. Sõn Ngoc Thành's career requires us to think about pre-Khmer Rouge Cambodia with much greater nuance. Dr. Matthew Jagel earned his MA at Northern Illinois University with a thesis entitled “PHILCAG: The History of Filipino Involvement in the Vietnam War” and his Ph.D. with a dissertation on Sõn Ngoc Thành (the source material for this book). Khmer Nationalist: Son Ngoc Thanh, the CIA, and the Transformation of Cambodia is his first book. He has taught at Northern Illinois University and worked for NIU's Center for Southeast Asian Studies. Dr. Jagel currently teaches at St. Xavier University in Chicago. When he's not doing all this amazing academic work, he's causing trouble with Dr. Eric Jones, his co-host and unindicted co-conspirator, on Napalm in the Morning: The Vietnam War through Film, a podcast that asks serious questions about why John Wayne is facing the wrong way at sunset in The Green Berets and praises the artistic triumph that is Operation Dumbo Drop. Michael G. Vann is a professor of world history at California State University, Sacramento. Operation Dumbo Drop is a 1995 American war comedy film directed by Simon Wincer that explores war, politics, and animal welfare. The storyline was conceived from a screenplay written by Gene Quintano and Jim Kouf based on a true story by United States Army Major Jim Morris. The film stars Danny Glover and Ray Liotta as Green Berets during the Vietnam War in 1968, who attempt to transport an elephant through jungle terrain to a local South Vietnamese village which in turn helps American forces monitor Viet Cong activity. For more purloined movie synopses, visit Patreon.com/yourkickstartersucks where you will find more hours of bonus content than you could possibly know what do with.YKS: The Music is provided by The Hell Yeah Babies, Drew Toothpaste, and Mark Brendle. Disney films have spanned numerous genres over their long history. From fairy tales to epic adventures, slapstick comedy to teen melodrama, and bright and colourful musicals to whatever the hell The Three Caballeros is. In 1995, Walt Disney Pictures released their first proper film in a genre they had only previously dabbled in - the war film. Operation Dumbo Drop is set during and in the thick of the Vietnam War, known for its brutal combat and horrific actions on both sides of the conflict. America's very involvement was controversial at best, but none of the nuance and complex circumstances of the war deterred Disney from telling this so-crazy-it-must-be-true story of the U.S. Military attempting to curry favour with local villagers by providing them with elephants. The premise is crazy, the fact that Disney made a movie about the Vietnam war is crazy, and the fact that they cast Ray Liotta as one of the leads is crazy - and that's not even getting into any of the craziness of the actual film itself. If that doesn't pique your interest in this week's episode of We Want The D, we don't know what will.
