От редакции: В 1944 г., по мере приближения конца мировой войны, общественность США активно обсуждала проблемы послевоенного мира. В марте 1944 г. журнал Чикагского университета The American Journal of Sociology напечатал подборку статей видных ученых, общественных деятелей по проблемам переустройства мира. Одним из авторов был П.А. Сорокин. Его статья перекликается с опубликованной в 12-м номере "Социологических исследований" за 1993 г. статьей П. This episode on the pellagra epidemic focuses on its prevalence in the U.S. in the early 20th century. Some of the scientific work done to understand it involves self-experimentation, and some of it is ethically problematic by today’s standards. While the rest of the world is ringing in the new year with yearly recaps and 2025 vision boards, Vermonters are left with the same question on their tongues: “Is it going to happen again this summer?” It's not difficult to remember the historic and catastrophic flooding that hit Vermont in both July 2023 and July 2024. Are our neighbors in for a three-peat? On this episode of That's Rad, host Anastasia sits down with Vermont State Climatologist Dr. Lesley-Ann Dupigny-Giroux. As Vermont's resident climatologist, Dr. Dupigny-Giroux plays a role in the historical study of the state's climate; the state legislature's climate understanding and funding requests; the public's education and preparedness for climate disaster; and the intersection of all three. The duo spends time dissecting facts and theories around Vermont being “targeted” by the rain, if drought is still a concern, and whether this is Vermont's “new normal.” An informative and intriguing listen for anyone who wants to learn more about New England's potential climatal future, all delivered with an undercurrent of hope during a time of national uncertainty. . . . In which Noah Smith & Brad DeLong wish Daron Acemoglu & Simon Johnson had written a very different book than their "Power & Progress" is...Key Insights:* Acemoglu & Johnson should have written a very different book—one about how some technologies complement and others substitute for labor, and it is very important to maximize the first.* Neither Noah Smith nor Brad DeLong is at all comfortable with “power” as a category in economics other than as the ability to credibly threaten to commit violence or theft.* Acemoglu & Robinson's Why Nations Fail is a truly great book. Power & Progress is not.* We should not confuse James Robinson with Simon Johnson* Billionaires running oligopolistic tech firms are not trustworthy stewards of the future of our economy.* The IBM 701 Defense Calculator of 1953 is rather cool. * The lurkers agree with Noah Smith in the DMs.* The power loom caused technological unemployment because the rest of the value chain—cotton growing, spinning, and garment-making—was rigid, hence the elasticity of demand for the transformation thread → cloth was low.* We need more examples of bad technologies than the cotton gin and the Roman Empire.References: * Acemoglu, Daron, & Simon Johnson. 2023. How can I stop lashing out when I'm stressed? Who is Sven for Sven? And: Why does my girlfriend keep storming out of my house at midnight? All this and much more in Sven's latest Lightning Round. Come on in! Explicit content.
MOD episodes have no shelf-life or expiration date. Our focus is principled - so always happening now - so each episode reflects the fluidity and immediacy of the current events we all share. Sobriety is sanity from any compulsion. Emotional sobriety is sane living. It is not sane to think that thinking of it-self can become who we are and our reality - while it is nothing more than imagined. Imagine that. Sanity is right here, right now, never wrong here or wrong now. Wrong is possible to think of while it has no applicable purpose or basis in reality. Once wrong is thought to be right inner conflict, emotional turmoil, and mental anguish are honest reflections - of a fight waged for a life they cannot exist. Body language provides raw data so has no opinions. Any hell bent line of thought is useless while the resulting stress undermines all our bodily systems health. Defective thinking misappropriates any “fund-a-mental” translation of sense. Disturbances are felt immediately and collectively. Getting lost in identifying them individually obscures simplicity. Their imagined collective impact will dissolve as their seemingly fractured “state of mind” is seen as fractional thoughts with zero as their denominator. Images or illusions acting as reality are delusions, entertained simultaneously. Trying to feel better about what is wrong by looking away is more ignorance. Feelings offer perspective on how well we're thinking about our thinking along with everything else that is happening. What happens only occurs in the Present. Reactive, impulsive, and compulsive behaviors are all chronic attempts to escape the present. Lies promise is a broken promise. To think we can escape to a place that is not here and now is impossible. Insanity occurs in present thought believing what we can imagine that is not now is reality. Being driven insane suggests sanity is a joyride away somewhere other than now. The resulting stress and anxiety from taking this thought centered in thought as our self undermines our human life form's ability to function properly, health-“fully”, reason-“ably”, and logic-"ally". So by trying to save our “self” we are killing the body we are responsible for maintaining. We know more than we think especially when all we think we know is what we think. To love an image exclusively is to inherently hate reality, while thinking it is our "self". Once we think thoughts are real we fight for what is right because we're wrong. Human history is littered with this interminable inner fight trying to escape by condemning others for what they think. As long as we are not honest acting outwardly will be dishonest. This misplaced, misguided, mistaken contempt for all the wrong we think we see is fighting to avoid the condemnation we experience for imagining we are only what we think. Thought-centered thought produces more thoughts. The "make-up" of our imagination is made up as are the roles we choose are the defective characters we play so the personas persist as long as we insist on resisting how we are choosing our thoughts as our experience. Narcissus died staring at his image for so long that he never loved anyone or anything else. In cases like his obsessive food for thought is a starvation diet - that kills us.We can think again. Like any choice we are free not to choose so always free not to redo obsessive thoughts. Thoughts are always new. Present thoughts are out of order whenever simplicity seems complicated. .contact@mentalobsession.com
Hey 20 somethings, it's been a little bit since we've released an EP. So we had to restore the feeling with this one. In this episode the gang talks about diagnosing mental health conditions and how culture can effect that. We have an open debate about over diagnosis and under diagnosing in America. Very good podcast, tune in and share!
Hope you all enjoyed the last edition, delving into the music of Bas Broekhuis Detlef Keller & Mario Schonwalder, more specials are to come later in the year. Now it's back to our usual look at new releases from those musicians we featured over the years, including the epic journey-style album called ‘Oracle' from David Wright & vocalist Carys, the calm & relaxing atmosphere in an ambient universe from Steen Chorchendorff Jorgensen. Experimenting with synthesised sounds, Rayspark Industries takes us to unknown territories. Focusing on the universe's beauty, wonder & complexities brings us Infinite Universe by fellow Aussie Jim Ottaway. Romanian artist Kamarius, a world fusion of spiritual, meditative & cinematic sounds. The many styles of electronic music from the prolific UK musicians Ivan Black are just a few we are featuring with their new albums. We must say compiling this podcast has been one of our more laid-back editions for some time. We begin with Micado's first album with nine tracks, all in coproduction with other electronic music composing artists, we selected two featuring Transit-NL & Midi Bitch. Karen talks about her career which includes covering the New England Patriots full-time since 2007. She conveys what it was like to interview the Patriots when everyone on the team gave the same answers and how she gained the trust of the players. Karen breaks down coverage of Super Bowls XXVI, XXVIII, and XLIX. And Super Bowl LI... imagine you have been pre-assigned to write a story on Tom Brady and his legacy on February 5th, 2017, and your deadline is roughly when the Super Bowl typically ends. That is where Karen found herself on that fateful night with Tom & the Pats down 28-3 with 2:15 left in the third quarter. Hear how she handled that. Listen to other great tidbits like why she received a handwritten note from Bill Belichick, what Danny Woodhead is doing now, and her thoughts on Roman Phifer.
Key Insights:* Brad's microphone is dying, and a new one is on order.* However, 75% of the talking on this episode is Noah: he came loaded for bear.* Although Noah has not yet read Acemoglu & Johnson's Power & Progress, he nevertheless has OPINIONS!* Friedrich von Hayek was right when he pointed out that we could not know the shape of future technologies* Particularly, we cannot know where, as new technologies develop, they will settle in the balance between tacit-local and formal-generalizable-centralizable knowledge with respect to what is needed to make them actually work.* Thus the ex ante error rate in figuring out in advance whether a branch of knowledge is labor-augmenting or labor-replacing is high.* Better not to try to channel R&D in labor-augmenting directions: we have powerful, well-known, useful, and reliable tools for improving equity: use them rather than trying to guide future technologies in a labor-augmenting equality-promoting direction.* Noah will read Power & Progress before mid-August.* Brad will try to come up with examples of technologies other than the power loom that we wish had been adopted more slowly.* Hexapodia!References:* Daron Acemoglu & Simon Johnson: Power & Progress: Our Thousand-Year Struggle Over Technology & Prosperity * Daron Acemoglu & Pascual Restrepo: “The Race Between Machine & Man: Implications of Technology for Growth, Factor Shares & Employment” * Daisuke Adachi, Daiji Kawaguchi, & Yukiko Saito: Robots and Employment: Evidence from Japan, 1978-2017 * Jay Dixon, Bryan Hong, & Lynn Wu: The Robot Revolution: Managerial and Employment Consequences for Firms * Karen Eggleston, Yong Suk Lee, & Toshiaki Iizuka: Robots and Labor in the Service Sector: Evidence from Nursing Homes* Katja Mann & Lukas Püttmann: Benign Effects of Automation: New Evidence from Patent Texts * Lawrence Mishel and Josh Bivens: The zombie robot argument lurches on: There is no evidence that automation leads to joblessness or inequality * Arjun Ramani & Zhengdong Wang: “Why transformative artificial intelligence is really, really hard to achieve” * Noah Smith: American workers need lots and lots of robots: With the power of automation, our workers can win. Danny Amendola grew up in Woodlands, Texas, and went on to further his football career at Texas Tech University. Being an undrafted free agent in 2008, he was signed on to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, then made a powerful impact by starting at wide receiver for the St. Louis Rams in 2009. In this episode, our hosts, Matt Butkus and Matt Amendola, talk to Danny about his experience being coached by the legendary Mike Leach, reliving past memories in New England, and recapping his experience on “Special Forces: World's Toughest Test.” From 2013 to 2017, Danny made a run with the New England Patriots winning two Super Bowls with the franchise (XLIX & LI). He played for 7 different NFL organizations throughout his career, tallying over 6,000 receiving yards, 24 receiving touchdowns, and over 5,000 return yards. We get to revisit one of our favorite characters, as Dave Filoni walks us through several pivotal moments in the life of Ahsoka. Episode 1 tells a tale of a mother and daughter that we wish had explored that dynamic more deeply, while episode 2 pulls on the heartstrings with an incredible look into Anakin pushing Ahsoka to be the best. Episode 3 retells a familiar tale with some details changed, but for better or worse? Another week, another ep! This week we've got our guy Hobb on the show, as we discuss the career of Calvin Harris, and end the episode by drafting some of our favorites by him.
RAGBRAI 2022 is history, and what a ride it was! This was like my 25th or 26th RAGBRAI and I may have to call this year my favorite. The weather was beautiful and not only did I get to ride my bike all week, I was also lucky enough to be part of the RAGBRAI social media crew. It gave me a new and fun perspective on the ride that I thoroughly enjoyed. And the highlight of the week was meeting a famous YouTuber that I have been following for a long time. And omg he agreed to come on the podcast! So here it is….Ryan Van Duzer is on to share his RAGBRAI experience along with some of his other bicycle adventures. An unexpected canceled Sweden trip gave Duzer an opening in his schedule and he jumped on the chance to come to Iowa to enjoy RAGBRAI again. A lifetime Boulder, Colorado resident, Ryan has spent all of his life enjoying the outdoors and now inspires others to get out there. He documents his adventures on YouTube at DuzerTV. His amazing videos are the reason a group of us did the epic San Juan Mountain Hut to Hut ride back in 2020. You can hear about it in Episode 55. Duzer calls RAGBRAI the most amazing bike event in the world, and of course I agree. I love that he loves my home state of Iowa as much as I do. So here is Duzer. Email me at murphologypodcast@gmail.com if you have a topic or the name of a cyclist you find interesting. Alright this one's different. Neil and I record bumpers for introduction and take-aways. The talk was recorded at Tru Bru and the audio quailty is so-so, but the content was great!
