We are Cyrus-less this week but Devan and I have a good ol' fashioned chinwag about Lau Kar Leung's Tiger and Crane classic, Executioners from Shaolin. I question the mechanics of the pressure point training dummy, Devan confesses that she didn't know the villain was Pai Mei and we both ask, "Is the final fight scene really any good?" Later, we have fun with listener questions and discuss Thanksgiving food, tattoos and much more. Enjoy!
TarantiNovember aka NovUMAber continues this week with Volume 2 of Beatrix Kiddo's quest to Kill Bill. The frenetic violence of the first movie gives way to a more plaintive western, but we still get the Texas funeral, Beatrix's training montage with Pai Mei, the Budd and Elle one act play in a trailer in the middle of the desert, Daryl Hannah serving hysterical blindness, a potential “Hysterical Blindness” reference, and also have you seen “Hysterical Blindness”? Uma Thurma gives a similarly emotional performance here, especially in the final chapter with Bill and B.B., to say nothing of the bathroom floor catharsis. Will there be a Volume 3? Who would play B.B.? And is there a role for Lindsay Lohan? Join Beth and guest host Devyn for a lighthearted discussion of a listener favorite. We are so happy that Devyn joined as co-host for this episode and shared her “Pai Mei -like” experience as a music major and student of classical violin. As promised we welcome all our listeners to participate and email us your favorite film suggestions. We would love to have you on the show. Kill Bill came to life during the shooting of Pulp Fiction as Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino created a lavish homage to martial arts action cinema. Notable references to legends like Bruce Lee and films such as Lady Snowblood adorn the fabric of this film. Lengthy battle sequences lead to the ultimate showdown between The Bride and the man she once loved. The final confrontation is unexpectedly philosophical and emotionally deep. We hope you don't mind our tangents about raiding our parents DVD stash and tv shows referencing other female action heroes. Be sure to join us in June. Sam returns and there will be much feasting and rejoicing.
Kill Bill Vol. 2 Review from the Salty Nerds has them taking a look at the second part of Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece that crosses kung fu and cowboy westerns in a hodge-podge of awesomeness. When we last left Uma Thurman, she'd just had an epic showdown in the House of the Blue Leaves, and now she only has three more names on her list - Bud, Elle, and BILL. We finally get to see a surprisingly sober David Carradine as Bill in Kill Bill Vol 2, along with an eyepatched Daryl Hannah and a surprisingly smooth Michael Madsen. This rip-roaring tale of revenge heads to a climax with the brutal training of Pai Mei coming in handy, as we finally get to see the five-finger exploding heart technique in action. Among Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, the Kill Bill movies rank among some of Tarantino's best - some would even call these movies Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece! What is your Kill Bill Vol. 2 review? Did you like it? Hate it? Would you ever hock a Hatori Hanzo sword? Are your tits filled with rock salt? Are you a renegade killer bee? Look for the photos on our Instagram page: @podcasteatdrinkRice, Kidney Bean and Corn Pilaf2 notes: if you can make this in a cast iron pan, you won’t regret it. And I’m suggesting brown rice because it is tough enough to withstand being tossed with the beans; white rice would fall apart.Ingredients:1 ½ cups brown riceOlive oil1 small can kidney beans, rinsed well1 medium-sized onion, diced5-7 cloves of garlic, minced and smashedFresh thyme1 tsp cumin seeds½ tsp chili flakes (red or arbol or pasilla – whatever you have)½ tsp dried oregano (optional)¾ cup, frozen sweet cornFresh kale or swiss chard, torn smallSalt, to tasteHot sauce, to tasteFresh flat-leaf parsley or cilantro, rinsed well and choppedFresh tomatoes, for garnishMake the brown rice, according to instructionsWhile the rice cooks, add 2 tbsp olive oil to pan over medium heat and fry onion until it softensAdd garlic, thyme and all dry spices and sauté over medium heat for 5-7 minutes (add more olive oil if you think you need it)Add corn and greens, fry for another 3-4 minutes or until greens are softenedAdd salt and hot sauce, mix wellAdd brown rice (either just cooked or leftover room temperature rice), toss well in panGarnish with herbs and fresh, ripe tomatoes and serve!Cauliflower and Kidney Bean TacosFor the FILLING:1/2 Cauliflower, cut into small bite-sized pieces1 cup of red kidney beans2 tsp olive oil5 garlic cloves1 tsp garlic powder1 tsp cumin seeds1 tsp ground cumin1 tbsp paprika 1/2 tsp red chili flakes1/2 large tomato, diced small 1 tsp salt Fresh lime juice - add olive oil to a large frying pan, set over medium heat- add cauliflower pieces, fry for one minute, then add all dried spices and stir to coat- fry for 5 minutes, turning every minutes, then add all remaining ingredients.- fry over medium heat until cauliflower is slightly softened, but make sure it still has a crunch. For the COLESLAW:1/3 of a small Cabbage - red or green - sliced very thin1/2 tsp salt1 tsp brown sugar1 tbsp apple cider vinegar- mix all ingredients except coleslaw until the salt and sugar have dissolved. Add cabbage, stir and set aside for 30 minFor the GARNISH:7-10 radishes, juliennedFresh cilantrofresh lime juice- mix all these together for a terrific garnish on the tacos SALSA:Green salsa - tomatillo - works best hereSPREAD:Any hummus or homemade guacamoleTORTILLAS:Soft corn tortillas work best here.Instructions:Warm tortillas on a griddle or hot plate (*critical step or your tacos will definitely suck); place them in a covered container with a square of paper towel on the bottomPlace warmed tortilla in a plate. This film is the epic, multi-generational tale of uncovering how exactly to punch a murderer in the dick. And in the end, the day is saved by wig-snatching. Executioners from Shaolin is a Shaw Brothers film, the most prolific and influential studio in Chinese cinema. We tease, but this is a time to pay tribute to a troupe of incredibly skilled actors and athletes. The stunts they pull of in this film, including dragging a man around by the foot with thigh muscle alone and putting out a FLAMING METAL STATUE WITH YOUR HANDS, are beyond awesome. I was introduced to today's guest (#41), Matt White, through a video. But this was not just any video. It was a video about Matt ... and his facial hair. The more I chatted with Matt, the more I full understood - and appreciated - his ... obsession ... with facial hair. Matt's passion (of course!): facial hair and mens grooming. In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Are you ready to learn more about Matt's passion for facial hair and mens grooming? During this episode ... I shared how I was introduced to Matt ... and his facial hair. Matt described - in great detail - what his beard looked like on the day of the recording. Matt shared how he was the only human ever born with a full beard (kidding, of course!). Matt talked about how he has really always been fascinated with facial hair - how he could "hardly wait" to have a beard like his brother, twelve years his senior. And how he would sometimes dream about having a beard, only to wake up in the morning ... disappointed with his hair-less face. I told the story of my father's 80s style beard (which he grew in the 80s, of course). My sister and I freaked out when he shaved his facial hair! Matt shared how his passion/obsession with facial hair turned into a business. I compared Matt to Pai Mei (from the movie Kill Bill) - see pic. I suggested Matt partner up with Duluth Trading. More About Matt Matt is the founder and creator of Sussex Beard Oil, a company who sells beard oil, beard soap, (t-shirts!), and other facial hair related products. Comedian Dustin Meadows hosts a weekly show wherein he watches his favorite movies with other comedians who've never seen the film before. Dustin and Brad Keefe take Lauren Bencaz through the conclusion of Tarantino's blood soaked revenge saga, hitting on important questions like "So, what's Pai Mei's deal? Is he single?" and "Would David Carradine treat me right or just shoot me in a church and leave me for dead like all the other girls in his life?" *Artwork by Brandon Schneider
