I have known today's guest, Tim Hayden (or THE Tim Hayden, #45) for years. And I love the dude. We speak the same language on many many MANY life issues. Tim is my go-to guy when it comes to finding the best restaurant in any city. Literally any city. From my recollection, he is 7/7 on recommending kick ass restaurants. Tim and I first met - first had a beer, that is - in Chicago several years ago. The rest, as they say, is history. Tim's passion: Getting uncomfortable. In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Are you ready to learn more about Tim's passion for getting uncomfortable? Like his dad, he likes to hear his own voice. We talked about parenting, of course, and taking your children everywhere. Tim encouraged folks to get out ... explore ... get uncomfortable. Casie described how her passion - Living Out Loud - looked in the beginning and how it evolved over the years. I met Greg Hemmings (guest #43) through a a Facebook Group I'm part of ... Marketers with Beards (I've since shaved my facial hair, but have not been kicked out of the group yet!). Greg posted an amazing video to the group of an awesomely-bearded gentlemen named Matt White (who turned out to be a Living Your Passion guest - listen/read here). Greg talked about how his documentary is exploring why millennials are more interested in making a positive impact versus just making a high salary. We explored why people are not happy at work. We talked about ... what if ... everyone was happy. Greg tried to slip in that he lived on a boat in the Caribbean for four years! I did NOT see that coming. Right? Greg talked about all of the cool (film) projects he's working on - living his passion! I basically told Greg that I'd LOVE to be on a project he's working on. Ha! Katy Widrick (guest #42) and I first exchanged emails on December 19, 2010 (and I have the original email!). We had just met each other in person in Tampa, Florida after Jason Keath's kick ass event, Social Fresh (check out Jason's new podcast, Social Toolkit). A lot has changed since then. We both are parents. I've had a few jobs. And Katy is now really, truly living her passion. Katy's passion: Active Living. We chatted about poop, boobs, diapers, and babies (of course). Katy shared how she was someone who lived actively for most of her life -- but also got into bad habits (eating more, exercising less, etc). Katy talked about the "turning point" in her life (her "ah-ha" moment), 7 years ago, when she realized she needed to (once again) live a more active life. Katy shared her 2nd "ah-ha" moment ... when she realized it was less about weight and more about health and fitness - building strength, getting more flexible, etc. We connected passion to fitness. Love it! I sang (rapped?) a bit. You may want to fast-forward that part. Ha. Katy advised people to "open their mind" ... try new things ... put yourself out there! We talked about P90X (Katy has done it 3 times - crazy). We did 10 pushups (with good form, of course) - at the end of the show! I was introduced to today's guest (#41), Matt White, through a video. But this was not just any video. It was a video about Matt ... and his facial hair. The more I chatted with Matt, the more I full understood - and appreciated - his ... obsession ... with facial hair. Matt's passion (of course!): facial hair and mens grooming. In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Are you ready to learn more about Matt's passion for facial hair and mens grooming? During this episode ... I shared how I was introduced to Matt ... and his facial hair. Matt described - in great detail - what his beard looked like on the day of the recording. Matt shared how he was the only human ever born with a full beard (kidding, of course!). Matt talked about how he has really always been fascinated with facial hair - how he could "hardly wait" to have a beard like his brother, twelve years his senior. And how he would sometimes dream about having a beard, only to wake up in the morning ... disappointed with his hair-less face. I told the story of my father's 80s style beard (which he grew in the 80s, of course). My sister and I freaked out when he shaved his facial hair! Matt shared how his passion/obsession with facial hair turned into a business. I compared Matt to Pai Mei (from the movie Kill Bill) - see pic. I suggested Matt partner up with Duluth Trading. Thanks to a terrible (yet effective) email introduction from my buddy, Tim Hayden, I was able to bring Cierra Savatgy-King (guest #40) on today's show. Cierra talked about how she put everything on the line and put her musical career on the front burner ... however, she didn't love it. In her words, "this rocked my world." Cierra realized after putting in 2+ years of work to release a CD that she did not love the music industry. She knew she needed to change and went down the path to uncover her passion. Cierra shared the process for finding - then living - her passion. Cierra talked about how her boyfriend and her decided to pack up their entire house, put everything in a storage unit, and live in vacation rentals in Austin. 18 months (and 18 different house) later, they began seeing the world differently. Amy shared her story about how she started her company, Authentic Skin, and why she was able to turn her passion into a living. We talked a lot about the "quick fix" instead of preventative options. I've had the honor of knowing - and being friends with - today's guest (#37!) Ann Handley - for ... well ... a long time. She's smart. She's funny (proof here). She does not take herself too seriously (see #AnnIsNotImpressed). Oh, and she also happens to be one of the best writers I know ... and has a new best-selling book out, Everybody Writes (see my book review blog post / video). Follow Ann online, read her book, talk with her on Skype (or in person!) and you'll quickly realize what her passion is. I'd ask you to guess, but it's in the title of this blog post (and below). Ann's passion: Ridiculously good writing. And while we certainly talked about Ann's passion, we joked around and had a ton of fun on this show. Also, that picture of Ann? The one in this post with her in the Santa gear? Yeah. Let's just say that was the toughest part of this post -- choosing the picture! So many good/funny ones to pick from. I received the following email from the wife (Kate) of today's guest (#33), Pete Farmer. I just stumbled across your website and podcast and couldn't help but think of our little business, Farmer Foot Drums, and my husband Pete Farmer. We built this business from scratch and it has been an incredible labor of love to see a dream and passion through. Pete is hands down the most determined, motivated, creative and passionate person I know - he is a self-taught designer, engineer, craftsman and musician. He has designed and created truly unique musical instruments and started a web retail business without any formal education in music, business, website, or graphic design. We now have three young children and I am on board (part-time) and it is now a true family business. Wow, right? As you can imagine, I replied immediately and a few weeks later, Pete and I were talking! Pete's passion: Giving tools to musicians to express themselves musically. As it turns out - right now - these tools are FOOT DRUMS. In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Are you ready to learn more about Pete's passion for foot drums? During this episode ... Pete talked about The Gold Rush (a few times). Pete shared how he became interested in foot drums ... and explained what a foot drum is! You will quickly learn how freaking NICE Pete is. You will meet Pete's 4-year old George (maybe not meet, but you will hear him!). Pete through me for a loop when he talked about being interested in building during his childhood ... not necessarily music. We talked about Nick Offerman (aka Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec) ... though neither of us were able to recall his name in real time! Pete shared how he found his passion pretty early on in life - or so he thought. Pete talked about how 2008 was a crazy year - both personally and professionally. Pete basically said to NOT do what I did. Ha! We talked about beer and Michigan football in the #NotSoSecretSecretShow In fact, we had quite a discussion in the #NotSoSecretSecretShow More About Pete According to the Farmer Foot Drums about page, Pete is "a teacher and historian by trade, Pete is a self-taught musician, craftsman, and businessman, following his passions for music, design, and working with his hands. Evan explained more about his business, Longer Vacations. I shared my experience getting "Don Julio'd" on our honeymoon. We talked about our families recent trip to Norway. Evan talked about the concept of "cultural exchange." Evan shared how he's really ALWAYS had a passion for travel (I love how he says "brochures"). We talked about group travel vs. "doing it locally." Interesting .... Evan told us the incredibly high number of people who are traveling. Evan talked about some staggering numbers around how much money actually stays in a country when people travel. CRAZY!! I shared by "giving back to the locals" experience in Ireland from 1998. Evan shared his "tips and tricks" for finding, then living your passion. Awesome. More About Evan According to his About Page ... in Evan's own words, "I am no stranger to this business and you could say, I have been in it since I was a boy, when I was brought to Cyprus and The Holy land on a family vacation andIMG_2967 I haven’t looked back since. I got into the travel industry quickly after college and I have experienced many different aspects of it; from sales and reservations, to airline representative, then onto airline management and for the last 6 years, I have owned and managed my own business, assisting adventurous globetrotters, just like you. All in all, a collective 15+ years in the business and hopefully many more to come. I left County Kerry, Ireland many moons ago. I settled in Australia for over a year and then traveled extensively around South East Asia. I then moved to New Zealand for two years before moving on and finally settling in Portland, Maine. An amazing destination in itself and I am very thankful to live in such an a beautiful part of the world." Find out more on his About Page. Back to back podcasters on Living Your Passion? Yup. Earlier this week I chatted with John Lee Dumas. Today (Episode #17) is Kerry O'Shea Gorgone. Kerry is a self-proclaimed geek, baker of chocolate chip cookies, lawyer, a wife, a mom (of two adorable boys), an employee at MarketingProfs, and a podcaster! While she loves her family - and her job - her true passion is learning about people through interviews (podcasting). Oh, and see that picture of Kerry (look to your right (or down))? That's the outfit she mentioned during this podcast! Finally, wait till you hear the audio good audio (just like the Julie Neumark and John Lee Dumas episodes). In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Are you ready to get LEARNED on how to interview/podcast? During this episode ... Kerry gave one of the best intros of "who she is" I've ever heard. We discussed our mutual LOVE for talking with other people. A love I also share with my mother-in-law I shared my thoughts on the best female podcast voice of all time - KERRY! Kerry talked about "the podcast voice" and gives some tips on how to sound better. Kerry shared even more interview tips - specifically how to ask a question and then let the guest answer (not my strength. ha!) We discussed editing (note: I don't do it either of my podcasts!). We talked about my contractor laying tile (not a euphemism!). I admit Kerry may be the female version of me! We did a "speed round" of questions that mutual friend (and Kerry's boss!) It's not every day you get to chat with a dude whose podcast is "Best of iTunes 2013." Todays guest, episode #16, is the one ... the only ... John Lee Dumas. John is someone who has passion "in spades" (his words). And man does he. For those who don't know John, he's the guy who launched a podcast just over two years ago called Entrepreneur on Fire. As far as I'm aware, John (Lee) was the first person to publish a podcast 7 days per week. Are you ready to get all kinds of fired up? During this episode ... We talked about our mutual friend, Amanda O'Brien aka @Amanda_Pants We discussed weather - Maine vs. Rochester, NY vs. California. Short version: Both of us love the sun and neither of us love the winter! John shared how he went from the military to podcasting. John talked about how he went about finding - then living - his passion. John shared how in the month of September, he is going to break 1 million - yes 1 MILLION - downloads ... in one month. Crazy, right? John talked about his LASAR FOCUS. We discussed "the early days" of podcasting. John dropped (really good) quote after quote. Love it! We talked about Impostors Syndrome. John gave a "pro-tip" around interviewing guests. Check. It. Out. John tells us all the secret to uncovering your passion. I first learned about Mark Horvath - today's guest (#15!) - after listening to future Living Your Passion podcast guest - and past Work Talk Show guest, Kerry O'Shea Gorgone. Mark was on Kerry's podcast, Marketing Smarts. I literally stopped mid-listen and texted Kerry, asking for an introduction. A few emails - and weeks - later, here we are. Mark BLEEDS passion. And, while Mark has many passions including good (and bad) marketing, pho, drumming, fishing, his true passion is FIGHTING HOMELESSNESS. And thanks to the work Mark is doing with InvisiblePeople.TV, he's making a huge dent. Mark is a storyteller ... as you are about to learn. In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Are you ready to see how we can all help fight homelessness? During this episode ... We learn that Mark was once living on the streets, homeless. Mark talks about homeless people just being ... people - just like you and I. Mark shares the difference between fighting and ending homelessness (hint: He's a realist). Mark talks about how he empowers homeless people to tell their own stories. Mark tells stories - a lot of stories. Mark dispels a BOATLOAD of myths we all have around homelessness and homeless people in general. Mark encourages us to ask homeless people what they need ... instead of assuming they need money or food. Ask! Mark suggests giving homeless people apartments (with support services). Stick with me on this. And watch this video. Mark tells us the most expensive solution to homelessness is criminalization. The second most expensive is leaving them on the streets. Wow, right? We chatted about health ... a bit. More About Mark Just a hardly normal guy trying to navigate through an abnormal world by helping others. Media Consultant. Jon Steiert (pronounced STY ERT) knows a thing or two about food ... and weight ... and unhealthy eating. In fact, today's guest (#14) knows a LOT about being fat and out of shape. As it turns out, he also knows even more about being healthy and in shape. Ever since discovering his passion - INGREDIENTS - Jon has lost fat, gained muscle, and educated himself on what he is putting into his body. Jon does not have a degree in nutrition or really anything related to food; however, I'd lean on him for anything related to ingredients and healthy eating. Dude gets it. In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Are you ready to talk ingredients? During this episode ... We chatted about how we met - power of social media! Jon shared how was pushing 300 pounds a few years ago - as well as how he lost 40 pounds previously ... then it came back. Jon talked about his mentor/guide/DOCTOR - Dr. Charlie Seltzer of Lean for Life We talk YET AGAIN about how I am recording some of these episodes outside. We had a ... discussion ... about The Food Babe (this is the Pumpkin Spiced Late article we discussed and this is the "Jenny McCarthy of Food" article I mentioned). I really like Jon's take on The Food Babe too. Jon shared an incredibly powerful story about his uncle. We talked about the best grocery store IN THE WORLD, Wegmans. BACON! BACON! BACON! I mean, who doesn't like bacon? Besides folks who don't eat it for religious reasons and those who are vegan/vegetarian - though I bet some vegetarians make an exception for bacon. In today's episode, #10, I chat with Heather Lauer, about her passion: BACON. I read two magazines cover to cover. Wired (thanks Dad!) and The Costco Connection. Before you laugh about the 2nd one, it's a really good magazine. I mean, really good. Well-written. Interesting. But anyway ... I learned about Heather - and her passion for bacon - thanks to an article in a recent edition of The Costco Connection. WARNING: DO LOT LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE IF YOU ARE HUNGRY! 8 episodes in and already I have my 2nd "McDonald" on the podcast. Today's guest, Loren McDonald, is not related to Tim McDonald (guest #3) is the VP of Industry Relations at Silverpop and can often be found preaching the benefits of email marketing as well as social media and location-based marketing. However, while that's his job - and one he's quite good at - Loren's passion is not what he gets paid to do. Loren's passion is about all things green. More specifically, Loren is passionate about being a change agent and getting people other than tree huggers to "see the light." Loren believes strongly in the need to move away from fossils fuels, supports electric vehicles, and is an advocate for solar power. In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Are you ready to GO GREEN and SAVE GREEN? During this episode ... Loren shared his passion for alternative energy, solar energy, wind energy, electric vehicles, reducing our use of water, getting restaurants to stop using styrofoam and plastic cups, and more! We talked about Loren's 1994 rejection letter from U.S. Electricar (awesome). Loren shares a story about when he was 19 ... and his brief stint in politics. This, coincidentally, may have been his first foray into "green." Loren forgot to turn off the audio on his alerts (ding!) We talked about Chevy Volts, Teslas, and other EVs! Julie Neumark. Episode #7. Boom. When I first asked Julie to be on the podcast, I thought her passion was going to be music. It turns out, her passion is much broader than just music. In fact, music and songwriting/song performing is just a small part of her passion. Julie's "not-so-sexy" (her words) PASSION, in one word: COMMUNICATION. When I asked Julie to expand on her passion, she said she loves "connecting people through communication." In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Oh, and one more thing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that picture on the right. It was taken moments after Julie got married to her partner, Holly. Julie confessed that, like both past #LYPPodcast guest Chris Rosati and I, she married up! One more (more) thing. I could not pick my favorite Julie picture. Here are two more I really liked - her Facebook profile picture and an oldie, but a goodie. During this episode ... I once beat today's guest in a footrace outside of Tyler's Taproom in Durham, NC. Shortly after said race (which I won, of course), I pulled my hamstring. That guy, and today's Episode #6 guest, is Mr. Chris Rosati. Chris's PASSION is simple: Making people smile. However, as you'll hear once you hit the play button, his passion is deeper than just smiles. Chris wants to help make the world a better place by facilitating acts of kindness. And boy is he doing both. I dare you to not smile while listening to this - the longest episode in the (short) history of Living Your Passion. Chris oozes passion. Amber Naslund, aka Amber Cadabra, and I have been friends for a long time - long in Internet years, of course. Episode 2. Boom. It only took 2 episodes to get a 30-year old, single Mormon living in Salt Lake City, Utah to talk about his passion: Love (of course). I met Nate Bagley in 2010 when we were living in the 801 (Salt Lake City). We were connected via social media and even sat on a panel together at a University of Utah Business School event ... talking about social media. We've stayed in touch over the years via social media* (since my family and I moved to California 2 years ago). *See? Social media can be a great connector! Hello and welcome to Episode 0 of Living Your Passion the podcast where I, DJ Waldow, chat with people who have found their passion and, well, are LIVING it. Wait. Episode 0? Huh? Yup. This 7 minute, 5 second monologue is not a “real” episode. Instead, it’s my one-take recording of what inspired this podcast, what it’s all about, and more. Living Your Passion was born shortly after I quit my job in June of 2014. I left a well-paying job that was in many ways the perfect fit for what I was good at and what I loved. The problem? It’s what I used to love. You see, I was no longer passionate about what I spent 40+ hours of my week doing. And I’m the kind of person who needs to do what they love and love what they do. It was time to rediscover my passion. And while I’m at it, why not chat with folks who have found their passion? To be clear, not everyone is getting paid to do what they love, but they are doing it nonetheless. I’m so excited to share this podcast with you. I pre-recorded several episodes and could not be more excited about the direction the podcast is already going. If you know someone who bleeds passion (or maybe it’s you), please email me at djwaldow@gmail.com. Oh, and if you have a connection to LeBron James, please let me know. I think he’d be a great person to talk to about his passion for basketball. #DeadSerious
