Join Roger in this week's Liberty + Leadership Podcast as he speaks with Robby Soave, senior editor at Reason and host of Rising on Hill TV. In this week's episode, they explore the importance of free speech, the dangers of censorship, and the relentless march of social media. Roger and Robby also discuss the harsh reality of media deception and the need for fact-checking, concerns over the monopolistic dominance of tech giants like Amazon and Google, and the wave of campus activism and its ramifications on free speech, a topic Robby explores intricately in his book, "Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump." Robby also serves on the D.C. Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and is the author of two books, "Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump" and "Tech Panic: Why We Shouldn't Fear Facebook and the Future." As a journalist, Robby won widespread recognition for setting the record straight in two infamous cases of media malpractice: the 2014 Rolling Stone hoax article about sexual assault at the University of Virginia, and the 2019 incident involving Catholic high school students at the Lincoln Memorial. Robby is a graduate of the University of Michigan and a 2017 TFAS Novak Fellow. The Liberty + Leadership Podcast is hosted by TFAS president Roger Ream and produced by kglobal. Not long ago, most of us embraced social media as a life-changing opportunity to connect with friends and family all across the world. Today, public opinion, including members of Congress from both parties, has turned far more negative. Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube, and other tech giants are accused of corrupting our democracy, spreading disinformation, and fanning the flames of hatred. Our guest is Robby Soave, a libertarian author and journalist who is a senior editor for Reason and the author of two books: "Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump" and his latest, "Tech Panic: Why We Shouldn't Fear Facebook and the Future."Robby is highly skeptical of most efforts to reform or break up technology firms. In a lively conversation we explore some of the biggest issues animating both right and left: bias, censorship, disinformation, privacy, screen addiction, crime, and more."There are certain legitimate problems with big tech and social media," Robby tells us. "The negatives have been very well-covered and over-hyped by everyone from the mainstream media to the right-wing media... The considerable positives of social media are almost entirely overlooked."In this episode we also hear about the respectful, impassioned debate between Robby and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, co-author of "The Coddling of the American Mind", who produced evidence linking the spike in adolescent mental illness and anxiety to the rise of Facebook and Instagram. Recommendation: Richard is watching the TV series, "Engineering That Built the World" on the History Channel. This fascinating documentary features expert insights by our co-host, Jim Meigs, on the building of the Panama Canal, the formation of the Interstate Highway system and the struggle to construct the Transcontinental Railroad. China's Dark Turnhttps://youtu.be/NFFgN44KPmkJohn Stossel“I’m more anti-China than you!” That’s one theme of this Presidential election. But not long ago, American presidents were excited about China. The Communist dictators had began to allow private property, and the economy boomed. But sadly, political repression may have gotten worse. ---- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV. Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 ---- 20 years ago, Bill Clinton said that China wouldn't be able to censor the internet. "That’s sort of like trying to nail jello to the wall," Clinton quipped, to laughter. "Well, the Chinese figured out how to nail jello to the wall," journalist Melissa Chen of The Spectator explains. "They built an almost perfectly walled-in internet. What they call the Great Firewall." The world wide web is not world wide in China. Most major Western internet sites are blocked. A few computer nerds evade the ban, but by and large, China effectively controls their internet. Even harmless jokes are banned. Because China's dictator, Xi Jinping, looks a bit like Winnie the Pooh, now "any time a Winnie the Pooh picture or somebody mentioning Winnie the Pooh ends up getting scrubbed from the internet," Chen explains. People who post forbidden things online may have their lives restricted. "You can't make doctor's appointments... you can't travel. So they'll block you from buying a train ticket or a plane ticket. You can't basically engage in modern day life in China." China's minorities have it even worse. The government wages cultural genocide against the Uighurs population. It's cracked down on Hong Kong, too, where protesters demanding freedom waved American flags. They understand the importance of freedom. I wish American protesters did! China’s repression should remind us how critical liberty is. https://youtu.be/ekS6LdfXkEY Big Spending BidenJohn StosselJoe Biden ran as a "moderate" in the primary, but now he wants more than a trillion in new spending each year. His Vice Presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, proposed even MORE spending. ---- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV. Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 --- Here’s what Biden wants to do with your money now. In January, we added up and compared the Democratic candidates' spending plans. Joe Biden did the best! He asked for "just" $532 billion in new spending each year. But since then, he's added all sorts of new plans. He wants to massively increase climate spending, adding $500 billion every year. Biden's new plan would do things like fund 500,000 charging stations for electric cars and create a “climate conservation corps”. He also now wants $75 billion per year plan to fund caregivers. That sounds nice, but as Pete Sepp, President of the National Taxpayers Union, tells me: "Why not leave more money in people's pockets to begin with so they can afford to provide care for their families? ... We as taxpayers know better to take care of our own families and ourselves than some distant government in Washington, D.C." That's just the start of the new spending that Biden wants. The video above has more of it. Next week, I compare Donald Trump's track record and plans for spending. Which candidate would add more to the debt? https://youtu.be/xSd2bVCtUgk "Anti-Racist" RacistsJohn StosselProtests pushed Americans to want to do something about racial injustice. Good! There are policies that should be changed to make society fairer: End the drug war. Limit police unions. Cut big government programs that encourage dependency. ---- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV. Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 --- But many activists make things worse in their obsession with race, say Kmele Foster of Freethink and radio host Larry Elder. Black Lives Matter leaders even push Marxism and criticize the nuclear family. See for yourself here: https://blacklivesmatter.com/blms-wha... Elder says blacks would benefit if more grew up in nuclear families: "The number one problem facing the black community is absence of fathers and Black Lives Matter actually is encouraging that." Also -- are you NOT racist? Not good enough! Activists now say we must all be "anti-racist." Sounds nice, but Foster points out that activists pushing "anti-racism" have redefined the term "racism" to include "any policy that has an effect that is disproportionate." That means even supporting a tax deduction is racist because on average, whites deduct more than blacks. The "anti-racists" also support segregation and other racist ideas, Foster adds. A now-retracted project by the Smithsonian lists “hard work” and “the scientific method” as "white culture." You can see it here: https://web.archive.org/web/202006110... That was meant to be "woke" -- a critique of oppressive white culture -- but it's also eerily similar to what white supremacists say. "It's offensive to suggest that black people can't aspire to or can't possess all of the values that are outlined in a document like this," Foster says. Foster and Stossel prefer Martin Luther King's dream for his children: a nation that judges "not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." https://youtu.be/rOCDoNV9M8M Thank You, Fossil FuelsJohn StosselToday’s Black Lives Mater protests often include the claim that fossil fuel use is racist, because climate change will hurt the poor and minorities most. But minorities and poor would be hurt even more if limits are put on fossil fuels. ---- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 --- Having electricity doesn't guarantee wealth, but not having it almost always means poverty. As energy journalist Robert Bryce says in his new movie Juice: How Electricity Explains the World: "Electricity has allowed people, in particular women and girls, to escape the drudgery of past eras. It has liberated them from the pump, the stove, and the washtub." Electricity also "allowed us to conquer our oldest foe, darkness." It let people work and study in the evening. It’s made streets safer. But most cheap electricity comes from an unpopular source: fossil fuels like oil and gas. Climate activists demand we move to "green" alternatives. But those are expensive. The Greens’ impractical dreams hurt the poor most. "It's going to have a bigger impact on low income and middle-income Americans," says Bryce. Their launch was the first from the US in 10 years. It wasn’t NASA that sent them into space. NASA would still be filling out forms and running up costs. It was Elon Musk‘s SpaceX that did it. Private enterprise makes good things possible. --- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 --- “Musk had not only done something that it was ... thought that only the governments or superpowers could do—he had done things that they thought they couldn't do,” says aerospace engineer Robert Zubrin, author of The Case for Space. But wait: NASA sent astronauts to the moon. Why couldn't they do what SpaceX did? Because after that success, they became just another bureaucratic government agency. Zubrin explains, “When you don't have a truly commanding purpose, the purpose of the program becomes to supply money to various suppliers.” Like Lockheed Martin, where Zubrin worked and where he discovered a way for a rocket to carry twice as much weight. When he pitched it to management, they responded, "Look, if the Air Force wants us to improve the Titan, they'll pay us to do it," says Zubrin. NASA paid the contractor’s development costs, then added 10% percent profit. The more projects cost, the bigger the profit. So innovation was discouraged by how NASA paid most contractors. "You have good people engaged in cost maximization,” says Elon Musk. “You just gave them an incentive to do that.” High costs were okay at NASA, as long as spaceships were assembled in many congressmen’s districts. “NASA is a very large job program,” aerospace lawyer James Dunstan explains, “By spreading its centers across the country, NASA can get more support from more different congressmen.” Fortunately, now private competitors are finding better and cheaper ways to launch astronauts into space. Musk’s SpaceX invented rocket boosters that land themselves. NASA dropped theirs into oceans. “If you had to get a new plane everytime you flew somewhere … very few people could afford to fly,” explains Musk. His next spacecraft, Starship, is meant to take people to Mars and back. Let’s celebrate the entrepreneurs who break government’s old rules. https://youtu.be/c1b6VtaIqwA Progressive "Paradise"John StosselMinneapolis did most everything progressives wanted -- but the city still had racist cops, and violent riots after they killed George Floyd. --- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV. Did they at least reduce the racial income gap? Minneapolis’ black/white income disparity is about the biggest in the country. That confuses the media. “Minneapolis had progressive policies, but its economy still left black families behind,” reads a headline in the Washington Post. Instead of “but," the word should be: “therefore.” Because as Minnesota Senate candidate Jason Lewis points out: "When you take away the incentive for work and savings and investment, you get less of it." Bennett resigned after his colleagues took to Twitter and eerily all posted this exact same wording: "Running this puts Black @NYTimes staffers in danger." "That language spoke to a potential legal concern,” says Robby Soave, author of "Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump". "Various workplace harassment protections that are well-intended,” says Soave, lead activists to say, "if you have a responsibility to have a racially hospitable climate in the workplace, then how can you allow someone to say something that offends me?'" I point out: "But [Cotton's op-ed] didn't put their lives in danger." "No it didn't," he responds. "It's absurd, and they're only claiming it because that's their way -- that's their tactic for seizing power in the workplace." Soave also says he knows where they learned this tactic, on college campuses. He covered the incident in 2016 where dozens of Yale students surrounded a professor and shouted at him, calling for him to be fired. What had he done? He defended his wife for sending out an email to students saying she had no business censoring Halloween costumes -- even ones that represented people from other cultures. "The message that you sent proclaiming that cultural appropriation on Halloween is totally permissible is, is hurtful!” shouted one student. Others broke into tears. One refused to shake the professor's hand, shouting, "I want your job to be taken from you!" It was. He had to resign as the head of a Yale residential house. His wife did, too, and she also quit teaching. Now those former students have graduated, and many are using the same tactics in the workforce, especially in the news media. Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 --- "Experts" at Imperial College London told us: shut things down for COVID-19, or more than 2 million Americans will die! They also said, even if the whole population socially-distanced, more than 1 million will die by August. The “experts” model was way off. So far, almost 140,000 Americans have died. Yet that same flawed model convinced the United Kingdom to implement a costly lock down. President Donald Trump cited it, too. Too often, such rhetoric is used to shut down dissent. "There is no such thing as 'THE science'," science journalist Matt Ridley tells me. "There is science. And science consists of people disagreeing with each other." In the case of that failed COVID-19 model, we all should have been wary. The same researchers had an awful track record, having predicted 136,000 deaths from mad cow disease, 65,000 from swine flu, and 200 million from bird flu. The actual number of deaths, for each of those diseases, was in the hundreds! Models constantly over-predict disaster -- whether COVID-19, climate change, or resource depletion. The video above explains.

But now there’s a new kind: online mobs. --- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 --- Repeatedly outraged, and vicious--their goal is to get people fired. They are good at it. An analyst at a democratic polling firm tweeted about a study that concluded “… riots reduce the share of democratic votes.” Quickly, an online mob rallied with complaints. One tagged the CEO of Civis Analytics, telling him to, "Come get your boy.” "Within days, this … guy was let go from the position,” says Robby Soave, author of "Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump." “So all this young man does is tweet an article that's obviously true, and he gets fired?” asks Stossel. “Why are they winning? Their argument is ridiculous.” “Because people are afraid to challenge them. It just takes one employee at one company, to say, ‘Here's the law that protects my rights to feel safe and comfortable … If you're not making me feel safe … I'm going to get you in trouble. I might even sue you,’” Soave explains. So “cancel culture” grows. In England, a tax specialist lost her job for saying being female is a biological fact. When Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling defended her, tweeting, “Force women out of their jobs for stating sex is real?” the mob came for Rowling. They called her transphobic, said her tweet was “cruel and inaccurate.” Some staff at her publisher refused to work on her upcoming book. But Rowling is the rare person popular enough to be able to resist the mob. Her publisher stood up for her saying, “freedom of speech is the cornerstone of publishing.” That’s how all these cases should be handled. “We just have to speak up,” says Soave. That can be hard in the current “cancel culture.” But those of us who can speak up, should. Progressive "Paradise"- https://youtu.be/c1b6VtaIqwA John StosselMinneapolis did most everything progressives wanted -- but the city still had racist cops, and violent riots after they killed George Floyd. --- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV. It, and the Constitution it led to, help keep us free. --- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 --- Compare America to Britain, the country we broke away from. There, they sentenced a man to more than a year in jail for making a Facebook live video outside a courthouse. Getting locked up for something you write on social media is also common; hundreds get arrested for that in Britain every year. Fortunately, in America, thanks to First Amendment, we can say most anything without being jailed. We also have a right to bear arms. Not in Britain, which has some of the strictest gun regulations in the world. Of course, there’s more to the Constitution than the 1st and 2nd Amendments. The Constitution divided government power in ways that limit authoritarian politicians from both parties. Trump’s own Supreme Court appointee ruled that a law making it easier to deport some immigrants was unconstitutionally vague. The Supreme Court stopped President Obama 96 times. The Constitution has failed in some ways. It accepted slavery. Although Thomas Jefferson promised "a wise and frugal government," the Constitution didn't stop our politicians from running up $25 trillion in debt. It didn't stop our government from passing 180,000 pages of rules. Still, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence have helped keep us free. Sometimes, police chiefs know someone is a bad cop... but they still can't fire the person. One officer hit a woman at a parade. Another challenged arrestees to fights, several times. Police departments tried to fire those cops, only to be forced to hire them back after the officers' unions sued. Most of the police violence against protesters seen in recent weeks took place in places where cops have generous union contracts. Researchers first give a vaccine to some test subjects, while giving others a placebo (a fake.) Then the researchers have to wait as test subjects go out into the world, resume their normal lives, and see who catches the virus. Some test subjects will get sick, and some won't. But it takes a long time (months, if not years) for enough test subjects to get sick to determine if the people with the vaccine did better than the ones given the fake dose. That's why we hear it'll be "12-18 months" before a vaccine is available. Even President Trump, with his "warp speed" plan, says he hopes it'll be ready "by the end of the year." That's 6 months away. But there is a faster way! Instead of waiting for test subjects to get infected, intentionally infect some. Then researchers wouldn't have to wait. More than 24,000 volunteers have already signed up, saying they're willing to be voluntarily infected with COVID-19 to find a vaccine faster. They told me things like: -- "If a vaccine were come on just one month earlier, it'd save 220,000 lives." -- "I'm young and healthy, so the risks for me are relatively low." -- "I want to play any role I can in ending this crisis." -- "I have no hesitation, no second thoughts, because I understand the science." They'd be part of what's called a "human challenge trial" because participants are "challenged" with the virus. The method was used to find vaccines for diseases like Malaria, Cholera, and the flu. Some bioethicists urge researchers to slow down, saying it's wrong to voluntarily infect people with a disease that has no known cure. But I say: these volunteers are adults who know the risks! Let people make their own choices. The volunteers may save thousands of lives . --------------------------------------------------------------------  HELP ACU SPREAD THE WORD! Ways to subscribe to the American Conservative University PodcastClick here to subscribe via iTunesClick here to subscribe via RSSYou can also subscribe via StitcherIf you like this episode head on over to iTunes and kindly leave us a rating, a review and subscribe! People find us through our good reviews. FEEDBACK + PROMOTIONYou can ask your questions, make comments, submit ideas for shows and lots more. The streets of Chicago are calmer now, so Eric and Joe take stock of the last few weeks. Was blocking the protests out of the Loop the right move when it resulted on pushing not only the protests but also some rioting and looting into Chicago’s north, west and southside neighborhoods? No offense, but Ald. Ray Lopez sure doesn’t f-ing think so. Reason senior editor Robby Soave joins the program to discuss the striking new relevance of his book “Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump,” the meltdown over a Sen. Tom Cotton op/ed at The New York Times and the rise of campus safetyism in the larger world. Eric shares an op/ed from a Millikin University Theater professor who contends that asking student theater performers to arrive 10 minutes early is "enforcing a white colonialist conception of time on our students.” And that’s just one of the insane ideas in that piece. If “defund the cops” doesn’t actually mean defunding the cops, maybe it isn’t the best slogan? Just a thought. And finally, Wendy's Twitter account wants you to know that they aren’t racist. Ya know, just in case you thought they were, we guess?

Robby Soave, senior editor at Reason and author of the book “Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump” joins Eric and Joe on this episode of Overthinking to discuss how the campus culture of “safetyism” has spread to the real world, particularly The New York Times, resulting in the firing of the paper’s opinion editor for the thought crime of publishing an op/ed from a sitting U.S. Senator that a large number of Americans happen to agree with. Robby also discusses what impact the Great Awokening is having on media, and what that could mean for political coalition building in the future. Does he think the campus culture problems are likely to get worse now that the culture is spreading beyond the quad?

Demonstrators remained peaceful, without reports of violence or injuries, but are pushing Mayor Jenny Durkan to step down if she refuses to defund the city's police department. The protesters continued to camp out in a self-declared “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” (CHAZ)-- a region spanning six blocks and encompassing the precinct-- which has effectively been abandoned by law enforcement after the Seattle Police Department closed the East Precinct on Monday. For more than two weeks following the death of George Floyd -- an unarmed black man who died in police custody after a former Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for over eight minutes -- hundreds of demonstrators all over the country took to the streets to condemn police brutality. KOMO: Police make allegations of intimidation, extortion inside Capitol Hill's Autonomous Zone And that lack of an organized leadership is hampering efforts to bring back some normalcy to the area and have officers return to the precinct said Deanna Nolette, Seattle Assistant Police Chief. Nolette said her department and other city departments are trying to find the leaders of the CHAZ to negotiate a roadmap for the area’s immediate future. She said police are receiving reports of armed people manning the check points intimidating people trying to enter. “While Washington is an open carry state, there is no legal right for those arms to be used intimidate community members," Nolette said. Nolette said operating a citizen checkpoint on a public street is illegal. “We have heard anecdotally of citizens and businesses being asked to pay a fee to operate within this area, this is crime of extortion," Nolette said. Activist Who Helped Create ‘Police No Go Zone’ Complains When Their Food Is Stolen (PHOTO) An activist who claimed to have helped establish the self-declared Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), a six-block area in downtown Seattle, took to Twitter to complain about the community’s food being stolen. The 18-year-old activist appears to be a transgender woman and a self-described “lesbian anarchist,” according to her now-private Twitter account. The activist tweeted Wednesday that CHAZ had invited homeless people into the zone, who promptly stole all of their food. The activist pleaded on Twitter for people to bring an assortment of foods, including vegan meat substitutes and soy products, stating that they would “need more food to keep the area operational.” 5-D -- FLYNN UPDATE: - Justice Department dropping Flynn case is 'a gross abuse of prosecutorial power,' court-appointed lawyer says  *A former federal judge appointed to review the Justice Department's motion to dismiss criminal charges against President Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn said there was evidence of a "gross abuse" of prosecutorial power and that the request should be denied. Former U.S. District Judge John Gleeson said in a filing Wednesday the government "has engaged in highly irregular conduct to benefit a political ally of the President" and argued that Flynn had committed perjury.  - Court-appointed attorney says judge should block DOJ move to drop Flynn case  John Gleeson, the attorney and retired judge who was appointed by Judge Emmet Sullivan to submit a brief discussing whether federal prosecutors should be able to dismiss their case against Michael Flynn, insisted in a filing Wednesday that not only does Sullivan have the authority to reject the government’s request but he should do so. The Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure state that prosecutors may dismiss a case “with leave of court.” At issue in the Flynn case now is exactly what level of discretion this gives the court. Gleeson argues that it covers the current situation, claiming that federal prosecutors gave a pretext for why they want to drop the case. “Leave of court should not be granted when the explanations the Government puts forth are not credible as the real reasons for its dismissal of a criminal charge,” Gleeson wrote in his amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief, alleging that prosecutors’ reasoning is “riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact” and should not justify dismissal. “[T]he rule empowers courts to protect the integrity of their own proceedings from prosecutors who undertake corrupt, politically motivated dismissals. That is what has happened here. The Government has engaged in highly irregular conduct to benefit a political ally of the President.” Attorney General Bill Barr disputes this. In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, he claimed that Sullivan was encroaching on the Justice Department’s authority. “The argument is that it's always been understood that decisions whether to pursue an individual through the prosecution process or holding them criminally accountable is vested in the executive branch and not the courts,” Barr said. “And he is essentially, in our view, trying to set himself up as an alternative prosecutor.” https://www.foxnews.com/politics/counsel-appointed-by-flynn-judge-says-court-should-block-doj-move-to-drop-charges 5-E -- MERRIAM WEBSTER CHANGING DEFINITION OF RACISM: US dictionary Merriam-Webster to change its definition of racism American dictionary Merriam-Webster will change its definition of the word racism at the suggestion of a young Black woman who wanted it to better reflect the oppression of people of colour. Kennedy Mitchum, a recent graduate of Drake University in Iowa, contacted Merriam-Webster, which has published its dictionaries since 1847, to propose updating the term. "I basically told them that they need to include that there's a systematic oppression upon a group of people," she told the local CBS affiliate KMOV. "It's not just, 'Oh, I don't like someone.'" Merriam-Webster's editorial manager, Peter Sokolowski, confirmed to AFP that the definition would be modified after Mitchum's request. 6-A -- TRUMP AGAINST CHANGING NAMES OF CONFEDERATE NAMED BASES: *President Trump says he is ruling out changing the name of Army bases named for Confederate Army officers. This comes two days after Defense Secretary Mark Esper indicated he is open to a discussion of such changes, which have been urged by prominent retired Army officers and others. In a series of tweets, Trump wrote, "My administration will not even consider" changing those Army base names. Kayleigh McEnany Turns Base Renaming Question Around On The Biden Welcome Center (VIDEO) McEnany brought up the movie “Gone With The Wind,” no longer available on HBO, and asked if George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison should be “erased from history” because of their views. “What about FDR, because of internment camps?” she asked. “Should he be erased from history, or Lyndon Johnson, who has a history of documented racist statements." Then, the White House press secretary took aim at Biden: “Finally, what about people that are alleged by the media to be segregationists?” said McEnany. “NBC tells us Joe Biden didn’t just compromise with segregationists, he fought for their causes in schools, experts say. CNN tells us letters from Joe Biden reveal how he sought support of segregationists in the fight against busing. Washington Post tells us that Biden’s tough talk on 1970 schools’ desegregation plans could get him new scrutiny. And there are several more where that came from. So I’ll leave you with a question. Should we then rename the Biden Welcome Center?” 6-B/C -- TRUMP NEWS: *Trump to hold first post-coronavirus rally in Oklahoma: President Trump is planning to hold his first rally of the coronavirus era on June 19 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is basically a pretense for placing household pets in a variety of cool trucks. The team includes Marshall, a firefighting Dalmatian; Rubble, a bulldog construction worker; and Chase, a German shepherd who is also a cop. In the world of “Paw Patrol,” Chase is drawn to be a very good boy who barks stuff like “Chase is on the case!” and “All in a police pup’s day!” as he rescues kittens in his tricked-out S.U.V. But last week, when the show’s official Twitter account put out a bland callfor “Black voices to be heard,” commenters came after Chase. “Euthanize the police dog,” they said. “Defund the paw patrol.” “All dogs go to heaven, except the class traitors in the Paw Patrol.” THE SHOW "COPS" HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY CANCELED: "Cops" has officially been canceled by Paramount Network four days after it was pulled from the schedule https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/cops-canceled-paramount-network-1234629637/ CNN: Greg Glassman resigns as CrossFit CEO after controversial statements about George Floyd Embattled CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman is resigning after he sparked outrage over his response to nationwide protests against racial injustice and police brutality. In a statement Tuesday, Glassman said he decided to retire after he "created a rift in the CrossFit community and unintentionally hurt many of its members." "Those who know me know that my sole issue is the chronic disease epidemic," Glassman said. "I know that CrossFit is the solution to this epidemic and that CrossFit HQ and its staff serve as the stewards of CrossFit affiliates worldwide. I cannot let my behavior stand in the way of HQ's or affiliates' missions." Following HBO Cancellation, ‘Gone With The Wind’ Is The #1 Best-Selling Movie On Amazon HBO Max pulled “Gone with the Wind,” the 1939 film that’s been called “the biggest blockbuster in American history,” from its library of streaming films. It quickly shot to the top of the list of best-selling movies and TV shows on Amazon. Other editions of the film also made the top-ten list on Amazon Wednesday, ranking #8 and #9. It’s also at the top of the “Romance” category on Amazon. The movie won 10 Academy Awards, one of which was earned by Hattie McDaniel, making her the first African-American to be nominated for and win an Oscar. UPDATE: ‘Gone With the Wind’ will eventually return to HBO with a denouncement of its racist depictions.  An HBO Max spokesperson says “Gone With the Wind” will eventually return to the platform with a discussion about its historical context and a denouncement of its racist depictions.  On Tuesday, HBO Max removed the 1939 film from its library in the wake of protests over the death of George Floyd. “’Gone With The Wind’ is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible,” an HBO Max spokesperson told Variety. “These depictions are certainly counter to WarnerMedia’s values, so when we return the film to HBO Max, it will return with a discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions, but will be presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. If we are to create a more just, equitable and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history.” 6-E -- COROANVIRUS AND SEX: Journalist JOSH BARRO: NYC Health advice discourages casual sex during COVID, but also says if you’re going to have it: “Be creative with sexual positions and physical barriers, like walls, that allow sexual contact while preventing close face to face contact.” ROBBY SOAVE: NYC's Official Guide to Pandemic Sex Is Awkward but Accurate. The health department correctly recognizes that abstinence doesn't work, and kissing is riskier than sex.  Coronavirus dictates from public health officials and government bureaucrats have been confusing, contradictory, and arbitrary for months now.  As compliance with aggressive social distancing begins to slip, officials must pivot toward offering scientifically sound advice about what kinds of activities carry risk, rather than doubling down on impractical and wide-ranging lockdowns. Thankfully, New York City's recently published guidance on "safer sex and COVID-19" is a remarkably sober—and, yes, awkwardly descriptive—piece of realistic guidance. While it acknowledges that the absolutely safest course of action would be to refrain from sex, it also accepts that abstinence-only education does not work. People are going to get together and they're going to get it on. The best thing that the experts can do is educate people about how to make these activities less risky. To that end, the three-page document correctly notes that kissing might be a riskier amorous activity than actual sex, given that respiratory droplets are the most effective vehicles of disease transmission. (This is an inversion of standard safe sex practices: Kissing generally carries little risk of spreading STDs.)  - LAST WEEK: Study says couples should wear MASKS during sex  Harvard experts say couples who are not quarantining together should wear FACE MASKS during sex to prevent the spread of coronavirus Sexual partners should consider wearing face masks that cover their noses and mouths while doing the deed. While the advice sounds like something out of a Cosmopolitan magazine guide for spicing things up in the bedroom, it is actually a suggestion from Harvard University researchers, who have offered up a guide on sexual health in the era of COVID-19. The guide, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine last month, suggests that couples who are not quarantining together but remain sexually active consider not kissing on the mouth and wearing protective face masks during sex to prevent the spread of coronavirus. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8384891/Couples-arent-quarantining-avoid-kissing-wear-FACE-MASKS-says-study.html?ito=social-twitter_dailymailus 6-F -- VIRGINIA / COLUMBUS STATUE TOPPLED: - Richmond protesters topple Columbus statue, throw it in lake RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A statue of Christopher Columbus in Richmond was torn down by protesters, set on fire and then thrown into a lake. The figure was toppled less than two hours after protesters gathered in the city’s Byrd Park were chanting for the statue to be taken down, news outlets reported. After the figure was removed from its pedestal around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday by protesters using several ropes, a sign that reads, “Columbus represents genocide” was placed on the spray-painted foundation that once held the statue. It was then set on fire and rolled into a lake in the park, NBC 12 reported. https://wtop.com/virginia/2020/06/richmond-protesters-topple-columbus-statue-throw-it-in-lake/ - Christopher Columbus statues toppled in Richmond, beheaded in Boston  Statues of Christopher Columbus were targeted by protesters in Massachusetts and Virginia on Tuesday night in an act of solidarity with indigenous peoples.  The 8-foot-tall memorial to the explorer in Richmond, Va., was pulled down with ropes and dragged roughly 200 yards to nearby Landing at Foundation Lake, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. It was also reportedly briefly lit on fire. A makeshift headstone poster was also placed in front of the sunken statute in the water that read, “Racism. You will not be missed.” Another statue of Columbus was beheaded in Boston overnight in the park named after him, according to CBS Boston. BOSTON (CBS) – The Christopher Columbus statue in Boston’s North End will be removed after it was beheaded early Wednesday morning. Mayor Marty Walsh said it will be put in storage and there will now be conversations about the “historic meaning” of the incident and whether it will ever go back up. But last week, when the show’s official Twitter account put out a bland call for “Black voices to be heard,” commenters came after Chase. “Euthanize the police dog,” they said. “Defund the paw patrol.” “All dogs go to heaven, except the class traitors in the Paw Patrol.”https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/10/arts/television/protests-fictional-cops.html 8-A -- 8:05 AM - INTERVIEW - GEN. JACK KEANE - retired 4 star general, the chairman of the Institute for the Study of War and Fox News Senior Strategic Analyst - discuss the debate of renaming military bases named after Confederate leaders. President Trump says he is ruling out changing the name of Army bases named for Confederate Army officers. This comes two days after Defense Secretary Mark Esper indicated he is open to a discussion of such changes, which have been urged by prominent retired Army officers and others. In a series of tweets, Trump wrote, "My administration will not even consider" changing those Army base names.   8-B/C - SEATTLE AUTONOMOUS ZONE: - Seattle protesters storm City Hall, demand mayor resign after driving police out of area, declaring autonomous zone  Hundreds of protesters, aided by a sympathetic City Council member, stormed Seattle's City Hall Tuesday night to demand the mayor's resignation, just days after seizing a six-block downtown zone that includes a shuttered police precinct. In some cities, like Seattle, pockets of violence erupted as a result of clashes with law enforcement. https://www.foxnews.com/us/seattle-city-hall-protesters-autonomous-zone 8-D -- 8:35 AM - INTERVIEW - PHILIP VAN CLEAVE - President of Virginia Citizens Defense League- discussed turnout needed for Protest at Alexandria City Hall on Saturday. Council To Vote On Gun Ban For City Of Alexandria Property. The city had previously not been allowed to enact a gun ban due to the Dillon Rule, but new state legislation authorizes that action. https://patch.com/virginia/delray/council-vote-gun-ban-city-alexandria-property NOTE FROM VCDL:  The City of Alexandria is moving forward with public comment and a vote on a proposed ordinance to ban guns completely in government buildings, parks, recreation and community centers, and at permitted events and adjoining streets. City Council had a chance to drop the proposed ordinance on Tuesday night, but did not.  They made a minor amendment that did nothing significant for gun owners and voted to move forward with the public comment period and final vote on Saturday, June 20.   If passed, this ordinance would take effect on Wednesday, July 1, and would make criminals out of peaceful gun owners for merely being on a street that abuts a permitted event, or walking through any one of a myriad of public parks, or to go in City Hall to pay their taxes! ACTION ITEM - GUN OWNERS NEED TO PROTEST THIS ATTACK ON THEIR RIGHTS! This Saturday, June 13, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 pm, VCDL is calling on gun owners from Northern Virginia and beyond to protest outside of Alexandria City Hall, located at 301 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. Let's have a huge number of gun owners there to get our message across! https://mailchi.mp/d4e2aed23b12/va-alertaction-item-turnout-needed-for-protest-at-alexandria-city-hall-on-saturday?e=88db6ec865 8-E -- MORE CORONAVIRUS RELIEF MONEY? BREAKING: Unemployment claims climbed by 1.5 million last week. Workers filed another 1.5 million claims for jobless benefits last week, the Labor Department reported, suggesting that some Americans are still being pushed out of work nearly three months into the pandemic. Read more: https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/11/unemployment-claims-numbers-coronavirus-312958 CONGRESS / DEMS PUSH EXTENDING $600 UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT, TRUMP ADMIN OPPOSED: Democratic proposal of extending $600 weekly unemployment benefit oppposed by Trump admin. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration opposes a Democratic proposal to extend a $600 per week federal unemployment benefit approved in response to the coronavirus pandemic, Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia said Tuesday. The $600 payment, which is in addition to normal unemployment benefits, "was the right thing to do,'' Scalia said, but is no longer needed as the economy begins to recover. The money, included in a government relief package enacted in late March, has helped millions of workers stay in their homes and pay bills even as the unemployment rate surged to its highest levels since World War II. The payments are set to expire July 31, and Democrats have pushed a plan that would extend the enhanced benefit through January. The Democratic-led House approved the proposal last month, but it is considered unlikely to advance in the Republican-controlled Senate. https://wjla.com/news/nation-world/democratic-proposal-of-extending-600-weekly-unemployment-benefit-oppposed-by-trump-admin PUSH FOR MORE DIRECT RELIEF PAYMENTS: Mnuchin: White House will 'seriously look at' sending another round of direct cash payments to some Americans in the fourth coronavirus relief package. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday the Trump administration will "seriously look" at sending another round of direct cash payments to some Americans in the fourth coronavirus relief package. "I think we’re going to seriously look at whether we want to do more direct money to stimulate the economy," Mnuchin said while testifying before the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. "But I think this is all going to be about getting people back to work, and we look forward to working with the entire Senate on this one." At the end of March, Congress passed the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, approving one-time payments of up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples. There's also an extra $500 payment for each dependent child under the age of 17. The payments were tapered for individuals who earned more than $75,000 and cut-off completely for those earning more than $99,000 https://www.foxbusiness.com/money/mnuchin-trump-admin-to-seriously-look-at-more-direct-payments-in-next-coronavirus-relief-package House Republicans propose offering Americans a 'return to work bonus': Republicans say the bonus could encourage people to "return to work," while a top Democrat rejected it as a replacement for extending emergency UIHouse Republicans are proposing a $1,200 bonus for Americans returning to work as the coronavirus pandemic slows, providing an alternative to Democrats' plan to extend the extra $600 a week in unemployment benefits included in virus-related stimulus legislation..  Republicans on the Democrat-controlled House Ways and Means Committee cited an analysis from CBO to support their idea, instead of extending the $600 weekly federal unemployment benefit past its July 31 end date. “The extension of the additional $600 per week would probably reduce employment in the second half of 2020, and it would reduce employment in calendar year 2021. The effects from reduced incentives to work would be larger than the boost to employment from increased overall demand for goods and services," reads the CBO analysis.  According to the GOP committee members, the federal expansion of unemployment benefits was "intended to provide relief for those who lost their jobs due to the government lockdown— but these funds shouldn’t undermine a return to work. Rather than continue subsidizing unemployment where it is no longer necessary, these funds can be put to more appropriate use in encouraging workers to return to work." Some congressional Republicans have argued that the extra federal compensation — on top of state weekly unemployment payments — is more than some Americans earned at their jobs before the COVID-19 pandemic.  https://justthenews.com/government/congress/house-republicans-propose-offering-americans-return-work-bonus   ================================================================= Mornings on the Mall Podcast - 2020-6-11 [00:00:00] 4:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [01:00:15] 5:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [02:00:25] 6:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [03:00:34] 7:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [04:00:46] 8:59 am - Mornings on the Mall

ROBBY SOAVE Spotlight Interview -- RIGHT NOW Podcast https://newrightnetwork.com/2019/09/think-progress-shuts-down.html "We are becoming such an unforgiving society, which is a problem because there is more evidence [online about our lives] - everyone has enough rope to hang themselves by now. We want to put people on the gallows, metaphorically speaking." "The thing with the New York Times story... I am generally against looking for old tweets and getting people fired for that reason. But the journalists of that New York Times story were like "Oh my God! I can't ah....We're the people who dig up tweets and get people [fired]. Nobody else can do that." - just being so amazed. They treated it like it was this undercover operation of the Trump administration to get people fired " "The intention of the new, woke, young Left that has a very different attitude towards speech, that says speech is action; speech is violence - if it's advocating policies that would harm people we're sympathetic to - by harm, I also mean emotional harm. If you're going to make someone you're sympathetic to feel uncomfortable - their mental health lies on a spectrum of related activities with their physical well-being. Your speech that makes them feel uncomfortable is a form of violence against their emotional state. And we are well within our rights to use violence to stop that. That's the view of the new, fringe, radical Left." #CovingtonCatholic #FakeNews #Antifa ABOUT ROBBY SOAVE Robby Soave is an associate editor at Reason. He enjoys writing about culture, politics, education policy, criminal justice reform, television, and video games. His work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Daily Beast, U.S. News & World Report, The Orange County Register, and The Detroit News. In 2016, Forbes named him to the "30 Under 30" list in the category of law and policy. In 2017, he became a Novak Fellow at The Fund for American Studies. He also serves on the D.C. Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Soave won widespread recognition for setting the record straight in two infamous cases of media malpractice: the 2014 Rolling Stone hoax article about sexual assault at the University of Virginia, and the 2019 incident involving Catholic high school students at the Lincoln Memorial. He won a Southern California Journalism Award for discrediting the former; his writings about the latter prompted several mainstream media outlets to apologize for having wrongly smeared the boys. A Detroit native, and a graduate of the University of Michigan, Soave now lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife, Carrie, and their two Yorkies, Caesar and Oliver. Since the 2016 election, college campuses have erupted in violent protests and demands for safe spaces and the silencing of views that activist groups find disagreeable. Who are the leaders behind these protests, and what do they want? In Panic Attack, libertarian journalist Robby Soave answers these questions by profiling young radicals from across the political spectrum.Soave documents a multitude of competing post-liberal political views among the young, from the Democratic Socialists of America to Turning Point USA. He explicates the ideologies and social conditions that have fostered these nascent movements, paying special attention to the identarian concerns that often animate Generation Z activists. Although these budding radicals are politically inexperienced and often poorly organized, they have already redrawn the lines of political debate around speech and censorship, and their break from the strictures of postwar party politics has the potential to permanently reshape America’s political landscape.
