Charles Thomson was the Founding Father who served as secretary of the Continental Congress during its 15 years. Along with John Hancock, his signature graced the first draft of the Declaration of Independence. Thomson also designed the Great Seal of the United States. After his initial burial at the family homestead Harriton in Bryn Mawr, his remains were transferred to Laurel Hill. Thomas McKean served multiple roles in colonial days – president of Delaware, Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, President of the United States Congress, and Governor of Pennsylvania, among others. Although his efforts in 1776 were what made the Declaration unanimous, he was the last man to sign that historic document. Thomas Leiper was a successful tobacco importer who built the first railroad in Pennsylvania on his property at Nether Township. As a founding member of the First City Troop, he fought with the Patriots at the Battles of Princeton, Trenton, Germantown, and Brandywine. His personal wealth helped to subsidize the siege of Yorktown. He and Thomas Jefferson exchanged hundreds of letters. All three of these men died before Laurel Hill opened in 1836, but they were all friends of Thomas Jefferson who eventually ended up at Laurel Hill Cemetery. I did the research on Thomson & McKean, while the script for Thomas Leiper was written by fellow tour guide Peter Howell.

The BBC Radiophonic workshop was founded in 1958 by Desmond Briscoe and Daphne Oram. This group of experimental composers, sound engineers and musical innovators provided music for programmes including The Body in Question, Horizon, Quatermass, Newsround, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chronicle and Delia Derbyshire's iconic Doctor Who Theme before being shut down by Director General John Birt in 1998. 10 years is a long time to summarize what's been happening with music and records, at least from my point of view. So instead, here's 30 mins to 4 important artists / scenes that was discovered and digested immensely over the last 10 years: Thee Oh Sees, Zambian psych-garage-rock ZAMROCK, Glenn Jones (folk guitarist) and the music of Peter Howell and John Ferdinando (Ithaca / Agincourt).
John and Ron saw it, so you don't have to. "Cats" is being called, "A cinematic disaster of epic proportions." Peter Howell claims to have had to, "resist the urge to remove a shoe to throw at the screen." Matt Goldberg writes, "The film everyone is in is largely the musical of cats singing about what kind of cats they are until you pray for the sweet release of death." Cats is playing nation-wide, if you want to atone for past misdeeds before Santa comes. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In a melting magical funnel of musical love (and the odd bit of reverb), musician David Bramwell investigates the unlikely story of how, in 1969, an amateur dramatic production of "Alice Through the Looking Glass", starring a young Martha Kearney, became one of the most sought-after psychedelic records in the world. Sony Award-winning musician David Bramwell heads out over the Downs to Ditchling, Sussex, where Peter Howell and John Ferdinando first met as teenagers - creating the soundtrack for the Ditchling Players' performance of "Alice", using not only musical instruments, but also kitchen appliances and field recordings, utilising the possibilities of the latest domestic recording gadget - a reel-to-reel tape machine. Bramwell travels across the Downs to meet folk chanteuse Shirley Collins and her tales of ghostly morris bells; dives beneath the waters of the Ouse with musician Isobel Anderson; is serenaded on the chalky hillsides by God of Hellfire, Arthur Brown; encounters a modern day Puck of Pook's Hill - poet Sam Walker; and finds out about the Ditchling Players from Ian Clayton, member since 1948, and his son Matthew; before enticing Martha Kearney, the young Alice, to recall the production's eccentric Englishness. For the confused, he grapples with the term 'pastoral psych folk' with former Oz and NME journalist John May, and rare groove aficionado Richard Norris, who moved to Sussex under the influence of this strange piece of musical history. And what became of those two young musicians? One is now a local surveyor - though he still plays in a band - whilst the other went on to re-master the Dr Who theme tune as a member of the Radiophonic Workshop. With music from the original album, and composer David Bramwell, 'White Rabbits in Sussex' is a psychedelic journey of its own, blending experimental studio techniques with music and narrative as we traverse the waterways and bottoms, the beacons and duck ponds of Sussex, in search of the muse. Producer: Sara Jane Hall.
Toby Hadoke presents a brand new interview with another Doctor Who name from the show's first 50 years, offered here as a free podcast...
Hello one and all! This is a cover I did a while ago. Based on a dream I had where Vangelis at the height of his powers (around Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner) did a cover of the Dr Who theme. When I woke, I had to recreate it! It incorporates melodic elements from the Peter Howell and Dominic Glynn versions and a bit of Murray Gold in terms of percussion. I also did a video to go with it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY4SwBHe8oE Enjoy!

The Miniscope returns to Radio Free Skaro this week, but with a twist. Instead of the subject being chosen randomly, musician Peter Howell’s work was specifically chosen for discussion, and instead of a discussion, why not interview the man himself? So, in tandem with Dr. Phillip Serna of Adventures in Time, Space, and Music, Steven got to talk to one of his early musical heroes about his many varied scores for Doctor Who from 1980-1985. Also, news and many fact corrections from the week before. What fun! Check out the show notes at www.radiofreeskaro.com.
