La follia e i deliri che hanno caratterizzato gli ultimi anni di vita di Ferdinando Palasciano, medico vissuto alla fine dell'800, sono al centro del romanzo "Di spalle a questo mondo" (Neri Pozza) di Wanda Marasco. Con una prosa lirica, un lessico ricercato e uno stile immaginifico, l'autrice racconta in un mix di realtà e fantasia la vita di Palasciano, una vita ossessionata dall'idea della cura: voleva curare tutti anche i poveri e i nemici in guerra (cosa che fece e per la quale fu condannato a morte ricevendo poi la grazia dal Re). Il racconto parte il 2 novembre del 1887 quando, dopo l'ennesimo delirio, la moglie Olga fece internare Ferdinando. Nel romanzo si intrecciano così la narrazione del dolore mentale e il racconto del passato sia di Ferdinando che di Olga, arrivata a Napoli dalla Russia dove aveva vissuto un'infanzia durissima con la madre affetta da disturbi psichici. Nella seconda parte parliamo di "Le sorelle di Lisistrata" (Mondadori), nuovo romanzo di Federico Baccomo che aveva esordito nel 2009 con "Studio illegale" diventato anche un film. L'ironia è da sempre una caratteristica che contraddistingue il lavoro di Baccomo (è anche sceneggiatore di Call My Agent Italia), ma in questo romanzo cede quasi subito il passo al sarcasmo e rapidamente quella che sembra essere una commedia pungente scivola nel dramma e diventa tragedia. L'autore immagina un'Italia in cui il Parlamento approva una legge che rende illegale l'interruzione volontaria di gravidanza. Una giovane deputata dell'opposizione, Gaia Zavattini, lancia sui social una provocazione: ipotizza uno sciopero del sesso come aveva fatto Lisistrata, personaggio di una commedia di Aristofane, per costringere gli uomini, ateniesi e spartani, a interrompere la guerra. In questo caso la protesta è per far cancellare questa legge. Da qui una spirale di eventi che portano al dramma. Un romanzo che fa un'analisi spietata della società patriarcale, una feroce disamina dei meccanismi dei social, delle ipocrisie dei politici, della manipolazione della comunicazione.

Questo avveniva quattro anni fa».Giorgio Pogliano è nato a Torino. Si è laureato in Economia negli Stati Uniti, dove ha conosciuto Amy, sua moglie. Ha tre figlie, Valentina, Jennifer e Olivia, e una nipotina, Anita. È presidente di una storica azienda elettromeccanica torinese, la Pogliano BusBar, fondata nel 1910, che produce condotti elettrici in quattro stabilimenti, a Moncalieri, a Moncalvo, in Brasile e negli Emirati Arabi. Ora è prossimo alla seconda laurea, questa volta in Storia. La 111ᵉ édition du Tour de France s'élance aujourd'hui de Florence, c'est le premier grand départ de l'Histoire en Italie avec une arrivée à Rimini, au bord de la mer Adriatique, là où il y a 20 ans la police retrouvait dans une chambre d'hôtel le corps sans vie de la dernière grande icône populaire du cyclisme italien, Marco Pantani, grimpeur d'exception, dernier coureur à avoir gagné le Tour de de France et le Tour d'Italie la même année (1998). Il était surnommé le pirate pour son crane rasé, ses boucles d'oreilles et ses célèbres bandanas. La deuxième étape s'élancera dimanche de Cesenatico, sa ville natale, une petite station balnéaire où il repose désormais et où de nombreux tifosis viennent encore lui rendre hommage. De notre envoyé spécial à Cesenatico,Le pèlerinage débute à la descente du train : dans un petit bâtiment en briques collé à la gare, l'espace Pantani. Trois pièces bien chargées sont entièrement dédiées aux exploits du pirate. Derrière le comptoir, Ferdinando, dit Paolo, son papa : « Ce musée, je l'ai fait construire et j'ai rassemblé tous les souvenirs, les maillots, les trophées, les vélos de Marco. Oggi parleremo del portoghese, che già al funerale era acclamato come: "o santo Condestàvel", "il Conestabile Santo" (Conestabile era il titolo del comandante supremo delle armate). Nato il 24 giugno 1360 a Cernache do Bomjardim, era figlio illegittimo di un cavaliere di San Giovanni (odierni di Malta), fra Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, che era pure priore e, ovviamente nobile d'alto rango. Anche la madre, Dona Iria Concalves do Carvalhal, era una gran dama, e a quel tempo la castità non era considerata un problema da perderci il sonno (e l'aborto era escluso a priori).AL COMANDO DELL'ESERCITOLe entrature del padre a Corte ottennero un decreto reale di legittimazione, così il tredicenne Nuno poté diventare paggio della regina Leonor e ricevere un'educazione da cavaliere. Dopo l'investitura, a sedici anni il padre lo accasciò in un ottimo partito, la giovane, bella e soprattutto ricca vedova dona Leonor de Alvin. I due sposi ebbero tre figli, due maschi e una femmina. Sopravvisse solo quest'ultima, Beatriz che poi andò in moglie ad Alfonso, Duca di Braganca e figlio del re Joao I. Da questa unione partì la dinastia reale portoghese di Bracanca. Nel 1383 morì Ferdinando senza eredi maschi, per cui la corona passò al fratello Joao. Ma il defunto Fernando aveva una figlia che aveva sposato il re di Castiglia, il quale si affrettò a reclamare per sé la corona portoghese. Naturalmente fu guerra e il nostro Nuno ebbe il comando supremo dell'esercito. Erano tempi in cui il comandante in carica non stava a dirigere le operazioni al sicuro su un'altura ma si spendeva personalmente in prima fila. E Nuno non si faceva pregare. Lo si vide in diverse battaglie e, fin dal giorno in cui le navi castigliane si presentarono di sorpresa davanti a Lisbona, che non era ancora capitale ma aveva già un porto di grande importanza. Nuno riuscì a riunire di fretta solo sessanta uomini e pochi cavalieri, mentre una forza di duecentocinquanta nemici si apprestava a sbarcare.PRATICAVA IL DIGIUNOI portoghesi, intimoriti, esitavano, ma Nuno si lanciò all'attacco con pochi compagni. Un colpo di lancia gli abbatté il cavallo e lui rimase intrappolato sotto l'animale. Ma anche da quella scomoda posizione si difendeva spada in mano contro una forma di castigliani. Fu il vedere il loro comandante in grave pericolo a far decidere i portoghesi rimasti a distanza. Dimentichi degli inferiorità numerica si proiettarono nel soccorso e la giornata fu loro: I castigliani, investiti da quelle furie, si affrettarono a reimbarcarsi lasciando sul terreno parecchi uomini. La guerra continuò fino al 1385, quando nella storica Battaglia Aljubarrota il Conestabile di Portogallo sconfisse definitivamente i castigliani e salvò l'indipendenza del Regno. La vittoria, quantunque l'esercito portoghese fosse più ridotto rispetto a quello Castigliano, fu così netta che il nemico venne inseguito fin dentro alla Castiglia e schiacciato a Valverde. Il giorno di Ajubarrota era la vigilia dell'Assunta. Il giorno prima, l'esercito in marcia provenendo da Tomar passò per Fatima. E qui, in località Cova di Iria, si vide lo straordinario spettacolo dei cavalli fermarsi e inginocchiarsi. Nuno, infatti era devotissimo alla Madonna. In Suo onore praticava moderato digiuno, compatibilmente con le esigenze belliche, nei giorni di mercoledì, venerdì e nelle vigilie delle feste mariane.MESSA OGNI MATTINAOgni mattina assisteva alla Messa e sul suo stendardo campeggiavano il Crocifisso, la Vergine, San Giorgio e Santiago. Di tasca sua erigeva chiese e monasteri, tra cui il Carmelo di Lisbona e la chiesa di Santa Maria da Vitòria di Batalha. Poco dopo la fine della guerra morì sua moglie e lui, malgrado le insistenze della corte, non volle prenderne un'altra. Impiegò la maggior parte dei suoi beni per soccorrere i reduci della guerra, in un tempo in cui l'assistenza e la pensione dipendevano totalmente dalla buona volontà dei signori. Nel 1423 lasciò loro tutto quel che gli restava e si chiuse nel convento carmelitano che aveva fondato. Avrebbe voluto sceglierne uno lontano per esservi dimenticato, ma don Duarte, figlio del re, glielo proibì: la situazione politica non era ancora assestata e il Portogallo poteva avere bisogno della sua esperienza in qualunque momento. Prese voti come fra Nuno de Santa Maria e per umiltà vuole restare per sempre un semplice frate. Nello stesso convento c'era anche uno che era stato ai suoi ordini e che adesso era sacerdote. Quando lo incrociava, Nuno si inchinava a baciare un lembo della sua tonaca. Si dedicò alla mensa quotidiana dei poveri che lui stesso aveva organizzato e nei locali della quale assisteva e serviva i più sfortunati. Morì il giorno di Pasqua, il 1° aprile del 1431, e subito il popolo pianse il suo "santo Conestabile". Era un popolo, ahimè, di indole diversa da quello che seicento anni dopo accompagnò le sue reliquie nella traslazione in chiesa. Erano i primi anni sessanta del secolo scorso e l'urna d'argento che conteneva le sue ossa fu rubata e non se ne seppe più nulla.MORÌ DURANTE LA PASSIONESul letto di morte volle venire ad abbracciarlo il re, quello stesso che, da Gran Maestro dell'Ordine di Aviz, lo aveva creato Conestabile. Rese l'anima mentre gli leggevano la Passione, nell'istante in cui scandivano le parole: "Ecco tua Madre". Così passò al cielo Nuno Alvares di Pereira, Conte di Arraiolos, di Barcelos e di Ourém, Gran Conestabile di Portogallo. La sua tomba venne distrutta durante lo spaventoso terremoto che rase al suolo Lisbona nel 1755, evento che servì a Voltaire come esempio per dimostrare che se Dio esisteva non era affatto buono: La sfortunata traslazione finale, come abbiamo visto, finì con un furto sacrilego. Cosa attrasse la cupidigia dei ladri? L'urna d'argento? La commissione di qualche ricco collezionista? In ogni caso, la fede del 1961 non era più quella del XIV secolo. E non si era che agli inizi. Ero appena laureato e fresco di conversione quando un amico scoprì sulla bancarella di un mercatino antiquario una serie di piccole e artistiche teche contenenti reliquie. Le ricomprò tutte e non ci fu difficile risalire alla chiesa cittadina da cui erano state tolte. E al parroco, più noto per le sue attività di saggista, che non faceva mistero di preferire a quelle di officiante. Già: frammenti infinitesimi di vecchie ossa, di valore inferiore alle scatole che li contenevano. Che vuoi che sia? Ma sì, vendiamo tutto e magari diamone il ricavato ai poveri. Lo scorso 21 marzo, Stroncature ha ospitato la presentazione dell'opera “LIBERARE LA GIUSTIZIA” di Ferdinando Cionti e Dario Fertilio (Licosia 2023). Gli autori affrontano la sfida di liberare la giustizia dalle catene che la soffocano attraverso una riflessione critica sull'attuale oligarchia incontrollata della magistratura, proponendo una profonda riforma della Costituzione e delle leggi in vigore. Partendo dal principio che ogni potere in una democrazia dovrebbe essere radicato nella sovranità popolare, il testo suggerisce una serie di interventi riformatori significativi. Questi includono l'introduzione dell'elezione diretta del Procuratore Generale e dei Giudici monocratici, così come l'abolizione dell'azione penale obbligatoria, del sindacato dei magistrati politicizzato (Anm), e del giudice speciale per il lavoro. Viene anche proposta l'eliminazione delle influenze incrociate tra politica e magistratura, l'istituzione di una vera responsabilità civile dei magistrati, una revisione della spesa nella giustizia, e altre riforme di stampo liberale. Queste misure sono intese non a ridimensionare il terzo potere, ma a consolidarlo, restituendolo alle sue legittime funzioni democratiche, enfatizzando l'importanza di un sistema giudiziario più trasparente, responsabile e in sintonia con i principi democratici. How do you sell a movie to Netflix, this episode will give you a bit of insight. We're getting deep into the weeds on Italian director and screenwriter, Ferdinando Cito Filomarino American cinema debut film, Beckett, which I absolutely enjoyed! Beckett stars the incomparable John David Washington and Swedish actress, Alicia Vikander. This action thriller follows an American tourist (Beckett) who had been in a tragic car accident in Greece and suddenly finds himself at the center of a dangerous political conspiracy and on the run for his life. He sets to reach the USA embassy to clear his name. Elements of romance and questions of political power are rolled up into a 90-minute manhunt. Beckett's world premiere was at the Aug 2021 74th Locarno Film Festival and is now distributed exclusively on Netflix.Filomarino talks about the cultural diversity on set - having seven languages spoken. I assume that would include, English, Italian, Greek, Swedish, etc. I was fascinated by the film's meticulously crafted visual elements and screenplay. Filomarino's work may be new to American screens, but he's gained notoriety in European cinema directing or writing on films like The Other Man, Academy award-winning 2017, coming-of-age romantic drama, Call Me by Your Name (Second Unit Director). The story sets in a 1980s rural Northern Italy --- romance blossoms between a seventeen-year-old Jewish Italian, Elio, and a 24-year-old research assistant, Oliver, who's living with the family over the summer to help Elio's father, archaeology professor with his academic paperwork. Call Me By Your Name.Filomarino shadowed Call Me By Your Name's director, Luca Guadagnino while working the second unit on the film and forge a good professional relationship which led to a collaboration in 2010. He was fortunate to have Luca produce his directorial debut, Diarchy in 2010. Diarchy is a Locarno and Sundance Film Festival award-winning short film. Giano and Luc are traveling through the woods when a storm breaks, forcing them to take shelter in Luc's villa. Gradually and insidiously, a competition emerges between them, with terrible consequences.We also chatted about Richard Eyre's, The Other Man, fresh out of university, and how that experience prepared him for his own films. We know that experience is the best teacher, so I am always down for hearing knowledge bombs filmmakers learn from other filmmakers in this line of business. Sort of like an unofficial masterclass. Pioneering colonist Ferdinando Gorges (1565-1647) was a British naval, military commander, was a key figure and major promoter of the English colonization of New England, and investor in the Popham Colony. His early involvement in English trade with and settlement of North America as well as his efforts in founding the Province of Maine earned him the title of the "Father of English Colonization in North America," even though he never set foot in the New World. In this episode Stevie is at Villa Cavendri in Verona and she is talking with Vittorio Frescobaldi More about today's guest: Vittorio Frescobaldi is the Junior Export Manager - Benelux, Denmark, Italy at Crus et Domaines de France. He comes from a very famous Italian wine family, and he has a great interest in French strains, which is what he speaks about in his interview with Stevie! More about Frescobaldi: The name Frescobaldi has a tradition in the world of wine that dates back over 700 years and has since involved 30 generations. In the 60s of the last century, Vittorio Frescobaldi (Sr.), owner of the family properties together with his brothers Dino, Maria, Ferdinando and Leonardo, gave this tradition a modern organization by creating a winery with headquarters in Florence, nine properties in Tuscany and one in Friuli. It consists of over 890 hectares of vineyards, planted in very different soil and climatic conditions, from which 7 million high quality bottles are obtained every year. Difficult to make customers, admirers and journalists perceive such a varied reality. The Frescobaldi's succeeded by exhibiting the characteristic elements of their most important estates in a hall, and offering visitors a virtual journey through their biodiversity, using all five senses: smell and taste, in the first place, tasting the most significant wine, paired with gastronomic specialties of the area, and identifying one by one the perfumes in the essences that the oenologist of the estate made available. It was a game in which sight, touch and even hearing were also involved, with specially chosen pieces of music being listened to. An original way to get to know the ancient Frescobaldi properties, the Pomino Castle, the Castiglioni estate, the Nipozzano Castle, but also the more recent ones, Castelgiocondo, Montalcino, Santa Maria, in the Grosseto Maremma, Luce della Vite, born as a joint- venture with the Mondavi of Napa Valley and then fully acquired, and finally the Attems estate in the Gorizia Collio. Montesodi and Mormoreto come from the crus of Nipozzano, and Lamaione from those of Castelgiocondo: the SuperTuscans that have given the most satisfaction to the Frescobaldis. Today, the family winemaker, Lamberto Frescobaldi, takes care of its production and with him three other representatives of the latest generation already work in the company: Tiziana and Diana Frescobaldi and Stefano Benini. Ferdinando Camon"Son tornate le volpi"Come muore la nostra civiltàApogeo Editorehttps://www.apogeoeditore.it/Questo è il terzo libro di poesie di Ferdinando Camon, dopo “Liberare l'animale”, premio Viareggio, e “Dal silenzio delle campagne”, entrambi pubblicati da Garzanti nel 1973 e nel 1998. “Son tornate le volpi” è un libro sulla paura. Un Occidente muto che è preda della paura. Viviamo in una storia che fa paura. Andiamo a dormire, e troviamo uno sconosciuto che dorme nel nostro letto. Ci muore una figlia e la seppelliamo, e dopo due giorni rubano la sua fotografia dalla tomba, per metterla sul passaporto delle loro bambine prostitute. Per paura gli uomini si barricano in casa. Blindano la porta che dà sulla strada, ma adesso blindano anche la porta della stanza da letto. Dormono come dentro una cassa di sicurezza. La paura solleva un sentimento di difesa verso chi fa paura, ma guardando da vicino i nuovi arrivati l'autodifesa viene spazzata via dalla pietà, come in “Negro alla posta”, dove l'autore osserva un immigrato dall'Africa profonda fermo davanti alla buca delle lettere, nella quale non osa far cadere il suo plico, perché non capisce come un francobollo colorato possa portare quel plico all'Equatore. Il salto dalla paura alla pietà indica che i punti d'osservazione sono molti e non si preoccupano affatto di andare d'accordo. Immigrazione, droga, delitti, prostituzione, mafie di terra e di mare, naufraghi, barboni, bambini rom che bruciano…: le “catastrofi quotidiane” che riempiono la nostra vita sono viste volta a volta con l'occhio dell'uomo della strada, del poliziotto che vince o che è bruciato vivo, dei mafiosi raffinati assassini, delle vittime, degli sfruttatori. Ne deriva una situazione di perenne, invasiva ambiguità, che conferma la pericolosità di quel che scrive Camon, del suo modo di raccontare i fatti. La poveraccia albanese che, per raccattare qualcosa con l'elemosina, scotta con la cicca il piede del bambino kosovaro, in modo da farlo piangere e così commuovere il buon borghese che sta passando, è oggetto di pietà o di accusa? Dire “tutt'e due”, come dice l'autore, è un alibi. La singola pietà o la singola accusa cambiano tutto, ma messe insieme lasciano tutto così com'è.Ferdinando CamonIl primo romanzo di Camon uscì in Italia con una appassionata prefazione di Pier Paolo Pasolini e fu subito tradotto in Francia per interessamento di Jean-Paul Sartre. Camon si definisce “narratore della crisi”: ha raccontato la crisi e la morte della civiltà contadina (nei romanzi “Il Quinto Stato”, “La vita eterna”, “Un altare per la madre”, premio Strega, “Mai visti sole e luna”, nelle poesie “Liberare l'animale”, premio Viareggio, e “Dal silenzio delle campagne”), la crisi che si chiamò terrorismo (“Occidente”), la crisi che porta in analisi (“La malattia chiamata uomo”, “La donna dei fili”, “Il canto delle balene”) e lo scontro di civiltà, con l'arrivo degli extracomunitari (“La Terra è di tutti”). “La malattia chiamata uomo” fu recitata a Parigi al teatro L'Aquarium per 4 anni consecutivi. Il regista Claude Miller ne ricavò un film. Camon ha lavorato nel primo Centro Anti-Droga, che aveva sede a Padova, e l'ha raccontato nel libro “La droga discussa con i ragazzi”. I suoi romanzi più recenti sono “La cavallina, la ragazza e il diavolo” e “La mia stirpe”. È tradotto in 25 paesi. In Francia, Gallimard ha tradotto tutte le sue opere in prosa e in versi. Nel 2020 è uscito il suo “Dialogo sul Comunismo” con Pietro Ingrao, che Ingrao aveva bloccato per 25 anni. Ed è uscito il pamphlet “A ottant'anni se non muori t'ammazzano”, contro l'opzione di non curare i malati troppo anziani. Nel 2022 Apogeo ha ripubblicato “Occidente” nella stesura definitiva. All are very old vineyards on steep hillside slopes (in fact "i Clivi” means “slopes”). My background education is Economics, so I had no specific formation as an enologist, neither did my dad. We learned by studying, by traveling, by exchanging experiences with other producers and mostly by doing. My dad passed in 2020 so today I'm by myself, and overall production is now around 100,000 bottles a year, mostly white wine. Since the beginning our recipe for quality has been very simple: (1) very old vines - at least 60 years of age, but many are 80 or over - for natural concentration, complexity and elegance as well as marked individuality and strong character; (2) certified organic cultivation in the vineyard and "spontaneous" vinification - i. e. no chemicals, no inoculations nor machines - in the cellar for absolute integrity; and (3) maturing for several months in stainless steel and cement vats before these slow-developing, long-lasting but "light" wines were offered for sale. Sometimes what you really keep is on the inside.[00:00:13] Liz: All the time or thinking about living in Italy, I pictured this gorgeous little Medieval town Cortona. And I imagined, okay, so we'll buy an old run-down villa and we'll rebuild it. And I got this belief in my head that because we didn't have Italian heritage that we would never belong, that it was pointless to try to think about moving to Italy, because since we didn't have family, we would never really be a part of the community.[00:00:55] That was really behind it was that nobody would help us because we, we weren't connected.[00:01:10] Lori: Welcome to Mementos. I'm Lori Mortimer, the host and producer of the show. On today's episode, my guest Liz is gonna tell us about how she and her husband moved to Italy and the memento that they found there that helped her overcome her worries about feeling like they would never belong.[00:01:33] Liz: My name is Liz Sumner, and I currently have a very boutique coaching practice. Uh, it's gotten small because I really like podcasting. And so now I consider myself a full-time podcaster. My podcast is called I Always Wanted To, and I interview people who are doing things that others long to do.[00:01:59] I didn't always want to live in, in Europe, but Michael, on the other hand, my husband, had lived in the south of France when he was in his twenties and he had done a lot of traveling. So it was more his original desire that we would move to Europe at some point.[00:02:20] Lori: In the early 2000s, Michael suggested Italy as a potential new home for them.[00:02:25] So the first step was for them to take a two-week vacation in 2002. On that trip, they did all the usual touristy stuff in the Italian capital cities. [00:02:36] Liz: At that point, we just could speak only, "Do you have a room?" and "I'm sorry, I don't eat tomatoes," and things like that. We didn't ever connect with anybody on that trip.[00:02:49] Lori: Liz was intrigued by the idea of moving to Italy. But at that point, she developed those major concerns about not ever feeling like they'd belong. But they kept researching on what it would take and what it would cost for such a move.[00:03:04] In 2005, they went on another trip. The plan this time was to be more intentional about connecting with local residents. They spent the entire first week in a tiny bed and breakfast in Orvieto. [00:03:19] Liz: And the people who ran it were so sweet. They also owned a restaurant. They kept inviting us to meals and bringing food home from the restaurant for us.[00:03:31] And I remember at one point Michael, trying to explain the electoral college system to them in, in our limited Italian. It was like the opposite of what I had felt, that, that, that we wouldn't connect with people. And we were so embraced by this couple. [00:03:55] Lori: On the next leg of the trip, they went full immersion.[00:03:59] Liz: [00:04:00] For 18 days, we did not see a single person who spoke English. But we managed, and it was really exciting and helped us -- helped me, certainly -- fall in love with this country. [00:04:16] Lori: Michael kept researching, and he found what he thought would be the perfect location for them: the Le Marche region in central Italy. The area has Renaissance and Medieval charm without the tourism and high sticker price. In the fall of 2010, they went back to Italy.[00:04:35] Liz: He surprised me on my birthday with a trip to Venice and a plan to rent a car and travel down to Le Marche and just look around, see what's what, have it be the first step in our plan to maybe someday buy something. [00:04:55] Lori: "Maybe someday" arrived a lot sooner than they expected. [00:05:02] Liz: We stopped for coffee in this little town called Pergola, and it was just something about it.[00:05:08] It's a Medieval hill town. It was built in the 1300s. And, uh, it, it had, this is lovely energy going on. And it was about 10 or 11 o'clock in the morning, we were walking up and uh down the street, stopped for coffee. And we decided, okay, this is the place. This is the place where we will check out a real estate agent.[00:05:35] And we come across this agency with the name Casa Mania. The sign outside was in that party font, you know, where it looks really wacky. So we thought, okay, good. Casa Mania. This is the place. We asked if it was possible in this price range to find something. And they said, “oh yeah, sure” and started grabbing keys and taking us to see places, which we hadn't expected to do.[00:06:05] Um, the office was right at the edge of the city wall in an old building. And we just walked on cobblestone streets, uh, about two and a half blocks, through an old archway, and came across this building with a giant portone, they call it, um, the big front door. So we walk up and, and we're just dumbfounded.[00:06:47] We had never imagined what it might look like inside. We'd mostly seen churches from the inside or places that had been made up to be BnBs or something, but we'd never seen somebody's apartment building. But it was like the person who had lived there had just gone out for coffee. The house was completely furnished, with pictures and stuff on the table and stuff on the mantelpiece.[00:07:17] And it was as though somebody was gonna come home later. It hadn't been occupied for a couple of years. The, the previous owner had passed away. But the house was still completely furnished in a very old-fashioned style.[00:07:35] Lori: They fell in love with this apartment right away, even though it was the first one that they looked at. And it had some challenges, like no hot water in the kitchen.[00:07:44] Liz: This apartment was built in the 1300s. It was the palazzo of some nobleman. Our apartment was the servant's quarters. Uh, so some of our neighbors in the other apartments downstairs have much grander places with higher ceilings and fancy stuff. But this is just right for us. [00:08:07] Lori: They made an offer and negotiated the purchase. Before the closing, Liz and Michael communicated with the sellers, who were the children of the previous owner. [00:08:17] Liz: We had told them that we would be happy to accept anything they wanted to leave there. They told us that they were gonna take some stuff.[00:08:25] So we, we had no idea what we were going to find when we got there. And when we arrived, there was just about everything that we had seen.[00:08:39] I mean, they left beds, they left dressers, they left armadia. They, they left a laundry detergent. Just everything that was in a home that somebody lived in. So we spent the first couple of weeks going through closets and chests of drawers and finding stuff. In the attic, over in the corner, all covered with dust, there was a framed picture, like an old-fashioned photograph that looks to me like, like it was Italian Gothic, like Grant Wood had painted American Gothic only in Italy.[00:09:27] And uh, and there was a farmer and his wife. The farmer's wearing a hat. He has a great big mustache. The wife has a tired smile on her face. She has dark hair with the gray beginning to show. It's sort of uncertain how old she is because you can tell she's had a hard life. She might be 36. Uh, she might be 56.[00:10:11] We dusted off this picture and decided that this was Grandma and Grandpa, um, or in Italian, it would be Nonno and Nonna and, and that we were going to, to adopt them as our, our Italian relatives. We learned that this is Ferdinando and Rosa Baldelli. They would solve the problem of me not having Italian connections.[00:10:45] So we adopted them and put them on our wall. And, uh, we, we ended up having, uh, an absolutely lovely closing with the family that we bought the apartment from, but we, we hid Grandma and Grandpa when they came to look at the apartment and to see what we had done, because we didn't want them to take 'em away.[00:11:08] So ...since then they have come and they have seen that we have given them a place of honor and they don't want them. Um, but we love them.[00:11:24] I mean at first we giggled about it, but then it just sort of became, well, of course, they're looking out for us. They are our, the representation of our connection here. Um, when a new guest comes to the house, we explain who they are because Michael is a, is a portrait artist. And there are a number of other pictures of people on the wall, um, that are illustrations that, that Michael has done.[00:11:55] And, and then there's this photograph of this couple. So it's just, it requires an explanation, but it's a good story. So we like to tell it.[00:12:12] I mostly worry that, that they worked too hard, particularly Rosa. There's another photograph of, of them with a giant family. There are a lot of children. And, uh, so I, I have respect and sympathy for Rosa. [00:12:31] Lori: After they moved in, Liz and Michael did some things around town to help them feel more integrated in the community.[00:12:37] For example, Liz volunteered at a cat shelter for a while. And what they found was that they had made a great choice about where to live. [00:12:46] Liz: A major reason why we felt connected was because we were right in town. We know of people who, who bought the beautiful country places outside of town, but they hardly ever come into to town.[00:13:01] And so they don't feel a part of things. They aren't known. When we first arrived to stay in that, the beginning of May of 2011, we walked in the door, and I met Luccia, who was our downstairs neighbor. She was the most wonderful neighbor you could possibly imagine. She introduced us to everybody. She introduced us to two of the people who told us who Rosa and Ferdinando were.[00:13:34] And, uh, she introduced us to Teresa who runs the florist shop, which has just kitty cornered from, from our apartment. And we would sit in Teresa's florist shop eating gelato, and I would just try to understand and comprehend. But it was just, like, they took us in and made us welcome. [00:14:00][00:14:09] I feel incredibly fortunate. At the time, we were just sort of putting one foot in front of the other. It just fell into place and we were carried along on this perfect idea that, that Michael and I were in sync about and the universe put into place for us.[00:14:46] Neither of us has any interest in moving back to the US, but I hope that if I ever had to, for some reason, um, I, I hope Rosa and Ferdinando would come with us. Um, I, I would feel sad to leave them. I don't want to think about that. [00:15:04] I'm just really fond of them. I don't think I have anything, anything more to say, except that I'm oh, I'm going to get a little misty. No, no.
