https://amzn.to/4cG3iAU How do you cope with losing someone you love? Sojourn: Transcending Seasons explores the journey of the soul as expressed by brother and sister, Karuna Mistry and Pratibha Savani. Together, they take the reader through their entwined paths of experiencing grief while caring for their beloved dying mother; bringing uplifting reflection, wisdom and spiritual growth. Their journey arches from a storming summer to a wintry wisp; eight chapters of revealing thoughts and valuable insights leading into how the writers overcame darkness. Containing almost 100 individually arranged poems – including prose, rhyme and visual – the creative siblings also include their own impressive artwork. Along the way, they are joined by guest poets, Jill Sharon Kimmelman, Sarfraz Ahmed, and Zaneta Varnado Johns, who offer insights from their own faith traditions. These offerings complement and consolidate the inescapable situation in facing the ultimate end. With an emotionally moving timeline, an array of contrasting conspicuous and subtle themes, this deeply thoughtful compilation combines layers of poetry and art in a unique fashion, making Sojourn an original read and a precious gift to the world. ... In the first part of our interview with Sean Sexton, we covered his family's cattle history and many other ancillary contributions to Indian River County. This week in Part 2 we get an intimate look into his daily life as he shares excerpts from his personal journals, we share our thoughts on poetry and painting and how those pursuits are intertwined with our ranching lifestyle. It's an earnest exchange that ranges from simple reminiscences of events we've shared together like the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering to deeper reflections on the importance of using our skills and talents to share the story of Florida ranching.

This week in Part 2 we get an intimate look into his daily life as he shares excerpts from his personal journals, we share our thoughts on poetry and painting and how those pursuits are intertwined with our ranching lifestyle. The Sexton family has an incredible legacy in Indian River County and have made lasting agricultural contributions that have carried over into so many other aspects of the community that it would be hard to list them all. The positive impacts they've made extend from the fence lines of their Treasure Hammock Ranch east to the coastline of the Atlantic and in this episode we cover the historical timeline of how that came to pass. We had hoped to get in the history along with some cowboy poetry and art discussion in one sitting but it was simply too much material so this is part one of our conversation that you'll not want to miss.
Episode 571 also includes an E.W. Poetic Piece titled "The Spotty Dog." Our music this go round is provided by these wonderful artists: Thelonious Monk, The Exiters, Chuck Jackson, Suki Waterhouse, Belle & Sebastion, Branford Marsalis and Terence Blanchard. Mary Anne Abdo's start as a writer began as an eighth grade student assigned to write about her "roots." In discovering the hardships of her ancestors, her journey to assist today's women in struggles through domestic violence, abandonment, and homelessness has culminated in her first book of poetry titled "Fractured Lollipop."
Doug Pagitt talks with Genesis Be. Genesis Be is not only an author, poet, and painter, but is also the "poet laureate" of Vote Common Good. The new book People Not Things Genesis Be offers a strikingly honest yet hopeful snapshot of her journey as a queer Black woman in America fighting for the humanity of her community. Poignant and moving, this debut collection of poetry and paintings from Genesis Be bravely examines what it means to stay hopeful on the arduous journey to freedom. Drawing on her activism and antiracist work as covered by the New York Times and VICE, Be examines tools of division and challenges our notion of freedom in an effort to combat racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. Equal parts delicate and unapologetic, People Not Things is a powerful debut that will speak to the hearts of readers from all walks of life. www.VoteCommonGood.com

When you're 20 and broke, it's cute. You're a renaissance artist and the girls understand. When you're 30 and broke, though, it's not cute anymore. Sure you love to rhyme, to find your rhythm, and to breakdance at Bar Mitzvahs. But does any of that pay the mortgage? Like your mom always said, "But sweetie, can you make a living as a poet?" In this episode, poet and songwriter IN-Q tells his story of going platinum. His success emerged from growing up without his dad, learning to express his emotions in rhyme, and finding his way through the hard times. Listen in as IN-Q and Erik chat about... What made IN-Q fall in love with rhyme and rhythm at 9 years old How his first public performance at 13 brought him to tears Learning to make a living as a poet during tough times (or why you're always right where you're supposed to be) Why "trust the river" is great advice for leading a successful life. Madonna, Britney Spears & the Kardashians are just some of the names that have shared this man's work. R.M. Drake (@rmdrake) is one of the most prolific modern day writers going around. His words are deeply profound, and his story is incredibly compelling. That, and we get silly.

Exene is a singer, artist and poet whose work traverses virtually every aspect of those disciplines. Best known as the singer for X, one of the leaders of the late-'70s/early-'80s California punk explosion, Exene Cervenka has also issued solo albums, launched several side bands (The Knitters), and penned books. X just announced plans to join their east coast comrades, BLONDIE, as a Special Guest on their fall U.S. “No Principals Tour.” Set to kick off September 5th, the bands will hit U.S cities including Atlantic City, Washington, DC, Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, Houston, Dallas, Nashville, Atlanta and Philadelphia before wrapping October 4th in New York City at Roseland Ballroom. Three decades after the inception of X, songs written during the group’s inception are as relevant and inventive now as they were in 1977. The original line-up of X remains John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom, and D.J. Bonebrake. John Doe found her in Venice Beach at a poetry reading. He liked her poems so much he offered to perform them in his band. The poet, Exene Cervenka, had just moved to town from Florida and she told him, no offense, but if anyone was gonna perform her poems, it would be her, and she soon ended up in the band. The band’s early albums, LOS ANGELES (1980), produced by Ray Manzarek of the Doors, WILD GIFT (1981), and UNDER THE BIG BLACK SUN (1982) explored dark love and an even darker L.A. with the unflinching eye of a Raymond Chandler novel. Doe and Cervenka would marry and later divorce, but they’d always remain soulmates. As they released each ensuing album, MORE FUN IN THE NEW WORLD (1983) and AIN'T LOVE GRAND (1985), the band continued to grow sonically and politically, fearlessly mixing genres without ever losing its center.
