Polyrhythmics - "Clydesdale" from the 2023 self-released album Filter System Now on their 13th year as a band, Seattle's own psych-funk septet Polyrhythmics released their latest LP last fall titled Filter System. “When I listen to this music I feel comforted and excited at the same time,” saxophonist Art Brown said of the album in a press statement. “I really feel like we've created some beautiful musical spaces that can transport you. And in that way I think it can provide a source of inspiration, and maybe revitalize the hearts and minds of folks who listen.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A little throwback to November 6, 2020 as we had to reschedule with this week's guest artists Say She She, so we went back just under two years to debuting two tracks from An Ode To Escapism, Ghost Funk Orchestra's brilliant album that dropped the next week on Friday the 13th. Unsurprisingly, that would be 2020's SECOND Friday the 13th that calendar year. We talked with Ghost Funk founder Seth Applebaum on the production of the album and what's changed in his approach, along with playing some of his favorite inspirations to the ethereal sound.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Isaac Hayes – No Name BarGhost Funk Orchestra feat Kam Franklin – The King of MisdirectionL'éclair – DallasPolyrhythmics – Yeti, Set, GoDurand Jones & The Indicaitons – Young Americans Part II (30:03)Ghost Funk Orchestra – Slow DownMonophonics – It's Only UsBadge Epoque Ensemble feat US Girls – Sing A Silent GospelHoly Hive – Embers to AshSugar Candy Mountain – WindowsKit Sebastien – PangeaBudos Band – Long In The Tooth Part III (60:33)Ghost Funk Orchestra – Quiet Soul Kamilah – Dark SkinDorothy Ashby – GamesMia Pixley – TenderIGBO feat Nelson Bandela & Blvck Spade – OmersaarUnderground System – Rent Party Part IV (94:42)Ghost Funk Orchestra - ToujoursJ. Welcome BEN BLOOM and JASON GRAY of POLYRHYTHMICS! This wide-ranging conversation took place on the Sunday of Suwannee Rising, after the band dropped a pair of scorching sets on SOSMP. With the fest raging in the distance, the three of us snuck off to have a lengthy discussion on the band's journey, inspirations, intention, mission, future and more. 3:25 SACRED ROSE & BROOKLYN COMES ALIVE 8:30 The Upful Update w/ B.Getz 13:25 Introducing POLYRHYTHMICS 18:45 INTERVIEW w/ Ben & Jason of Polyrhythmics A hard-driving modern afro-psycho-beat squadron, Polyrhythmics feature the heart-thumping bass lines of Jason Gray, and the colorful, intricate phrasings of Ben Bloom's guitar. A true “democratic” collaborative, Polyrhythmics includes three horn players, guitar, bass, drums, percussion and keys. Meditative hypnosis and elements of surprise make up a sonic foundation for their mystical, genre-blurring brand of sound art. The collective continues to mature into a muscular live unit, known for painting vivid instrumental imagery using complex rhythms, impressive dynamics, and a searing level of precision. Ben Bloom and I go back almost 25 years, to the fertile embryonic jam scene of the Northeast, and 1.0 Phish adventures too. So we were well acquainted before this chat. Bloom began playing guitar at 9, attended college at Boston University. By high school, he knew music would be his life's work. Later, Bloom moved to Seattle, honed his skills with bands in local clubs, before co-founding Polyrhythmics in 2009. Ben connected with Jason Gray, a Californian who had moved away from music while doing a stint on submarines in the Navy, eventually landing in Seattle. Gray found his way through to the city's musical bosom and into one of it's hottest bands. In addition to holding down the low end with Polyrhythmics, Gray operates Blue Mallard Studios, where he produces and engineers. www.Polyrhythmics.com Vibe Junkie JAMZ ! This week we start out in the middle of America, and a great new track from Wichita's Jordana. Then it's off to London by way of Lahore, Pakistan, and Tenderlonius's latest underground global jazz interpretation. Our next stop is back in the Midwest and St. Joseph, Missouri's Radkey with a punk rock outfit that lets it rip. We then move out to Seattle, and wonderful new song from Polyrhythmics for some Afro-Psycho-beat with a jazzy feel. And finally in this week's archive track, we take the pod to Germany in the summer of 1996 for a very trippy techno classic from Porter Ricks.

Seattle-based collective Polyrhythmics specializes in a flavorful blend of progressive funk, psychedelic rock and modern afro-beat. As Troy Nelson explains in this week’s episode of Live on KEXP, it’s music for the "heads.” Their songs take time to unravel, rewarding patient listeners with a lush and intricate experience that defies the current song trends for something more gratifying. When the world is a whirlwind, don’t forget– take the time to let something develop. Listen to Troy Nelson wax poetic about the value of music “heads” as well as delving into the often-limiting current trends happening with music ahead of Polyrhythmics’ spirited set featuring four songs from 2020’s 'Man From The Future.’ Recorded 02/21/2020. How far would you go for family? In My Sister The Serial Killer author Oyinkan Braithwaite writes about two sisters with an unusually deadly sibling dynamic. The elder sister is meticulous, tidy, and controlling. Her little sister is the beautiful one; capricious, charming, and, as it happens, a serial killer. My Sister the Serial Killer is a fast-paced thriller with pulpy and comic overtones and just the right amount of family dysfunction. About the Author:Oyinkan Braithwaite is a graduate of Kingston University in Creative Writing and Law. Following her degree, she worked as an assistant editor at Kachifo Limited, a Nigerian publishing house, and as a production manager at Ajapaworld, a children’s educational and entertainment company. She now works as a freelance writer and editor. In 2014, she was shortlisted as a top-ten spoken-word artist in the Eko Poetry Slam, and in 2016 she was a finalist for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize. She lives in Lagos, Nigeria. Andy Sells is the mastermind behind our most recent vinyl release, Select Level. Andy has a deep discography of vinyl singles, full albums and side projects and he’s recorded with and produced for musicians like downtempo explorers FCS North, electronic jazz producer David Hanke, thrash rockers Nosretep, Afrobeat players Cascadia'10, Funk and Soul Legends Wheedle's Groove, Psychedelic Jazz astronauts Afrocop, video game soundtrack master SCNTFC, and lots more. From Afrobeat to Thrash Metal, Downtempo to Jazz and even his most recent adventure into Punk Funk and Post Disco with his Select Level project, his love of music is all encompassing and clearly insatiable. Not even a near death experience could keep Andy from pushing himself to complete the Select Level album. We recently caught up with Andy in his home studio in Seattle, Washington. And if you haven’t heard already we just announced the pre-order of our next release with the group Rezin Tooth. This is a dub reggae album created by Nate Spicer of Seattle Afrobeat and Funk group Polyrhythmics. Ants navigate to and from food using pheromone trails; the stronger the pheromone trail, the more ants following it, like some kind of highway map. Humans use similar mapping strategies as we navigate through life, but how do we know that the paths we’re on will lead us to where we want to be? Today’s show is about navigating, with four stories and a poem about various ways that humans are moving through the world, with unique answers to these questions: How do we navigate through life without any instructions, or with instructions that might be wrong? How do we know which way to go to get whatever we’re going for? And how do we decide when to stop moving? “We did not go in there with the notion that we have all the answers to lead the working class, that we are the revolutionary leadership…the people who already understood the workplace, who understood the industry, who understood the union and its history were very often the rank and file workers who had been there for a long time.” – Dan La Botz In this episode, we compare labor conditions and labor organizing in 1970s America and contemporary UK. Charlie Morgan interviewed Dan La Botz and Jamie Woodcock. Dan LaBotz was a founding member of Teamsters for a Democratic Union and is the author of many books on labor politics including Made in Indonesia: Indonesian Workers Since Suharto (South End Press, 2001), Cesar Chavez and La Causa (Pearson Longman, 2006), and What Went Wrong? The Nicaraguan Revolution: A Marxist Analysis (Brill, 2016). For twenty years he was the editor of Mexican Labor News and Analysis and is a co-editor of New Politics. "We did not go in there with the notion that we have all the answers to lead the working class, that we are the revolutionary leadership...the people who already understood the workplace, who understood the industry, who understood the union and its history were very often the rank and file workers who had been there for a long time." - Dan La Botz In this episode, we compare labor conditions and labor organizing in 1970s America and contemporary UK. Jamie Woodcock completed his PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is currently a fellow at LSE. On this edition of Live From Greenville Studios, we have the multi-talented musician, band leader, and composer Pat Van Dyke aka PVD. Originally, we were supposed to have both he and John 'Sci' Robinson, but another snowstorm blew through and held up John. We are going to reschedule the two to speak on their musical partnership and more very soon. PVD brought over some records as well as a bottle of bourbon to share, which was perfect for a snowed out Sunday here in the Greenville Studios. During the course of the show we touched on his collaborations, his influences, and he brought a bag of records we played and talked about. It was my pleasure to have this talented cat in the studio, and along the journey you'll hear some tunes PVD is into these days, as well as new tracks out of the Daptone camp alongside reissued soul from Secret Stash, a new Polyrhythmics track, some of PVD's music (of course), and much, much more. Thanks for tuning in, and stay tuned for the next episode coming to your headphones very soon.INTRO: Pat Van DykeKool and The Gang - Summer Madness Josephine Taylor - For You My LoveBennie Sings - Straight Lines The Pioneers - Pony Express PVD INTERVIEW Polyrhythmics - El Fuego Saun & Starr - Look Closer Buscrates 16 Bit Ensemble - B Boy Stance PVD INTERVIEW Wayne Carter - Mad Mouth Woman Herbie Hancock - Trust Me Sookie - Rhythm On Rhtym (Nik Weston Re-Edit) PVD INTERVIEWThe Meltdown - Better Days Dialated Peoples - Weed vs. Beer Sergio Mendes - Look Around Alice Clark - I Keep It Hid Soul East - Funky Lady Part 1 PVD INTERVIEW Pat Van Dyke - Forest Street Blue Pat Van Dyke - Frequency OUTRO Bill Murray and RZA www.FleaMarketFunk.comTwitter: @fleamarketfunkKeep Diggin'!
