Paratransit is the most expensive mode transit agencies in North America provide, so finding ways to save money and better serve the community is paramount. One way to do that is offer a bare-bones, only-what's-mandated service; which saves money, but underserves a vulnerable population. The other way is to get smart, to get innovative. And that's exactly what Eileen Collins Turvey of Portland's TriMet did, and it paid off because she won the 2024 APTA Innovation Award for her pilot program giving paratransit customers Instacart Plus memberships. It costs about $150 round trip for someone to use paratransit to go to the store. And they have to book ahead of time and can only bring two bags back from the store. But what if people could just have their groceries delivered instead? In her pilot, Eileen gave $10/mo Instacart Plus memberships to paratransit customers to let them buy groceries and have them delivered whenever they need from over 55 stores. How's it working?TriMet is saving $1500 per month per person and if the program is expanded to just half of their paratransit customers they could save $9 million per year.In her conversation with host Paul Comfort, Eileen also talks about her personal connection to paratransit and her vision for what paratransit could and should be. Tune in for this awesome interview with a true trailblazer. And if you'd like to learn more about it, Eileen provided us with a link to all her information and materials about the program. Show Notes: Dan Bauer, a Harvard Business School graduate and independent consultant, talks about the NSLC, or National Student Leadership Conference program, sponsored by Inc Magazine. The program offers a nine-day immersion in entrepreneurship for high school students aged 14 to 18 from around the world. The students are vetted on their GPAs, and the program takes place on six prestigious college campuses, including Yale, Columbia, Duke, Michigan, Cal-Berkeley, and UCLA. The NSLC Origins Story The origin story for the program began with Dan's business, the MBA Exchange, which focused on career and education consulting. After selling the business in 2016, he decided to find another outlet for teen entrepreneurship education and found that there was room for a better resource with the pedigree of top colleges and a platform for engagement with real-world entrepreneurs from various industries. Dan chose to aggregate best-in-class offerings, such as curriculum, camp teachers, and sponsors, and worked with them to create a successful partnership. Unpacking the NSLC Program The National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) provides campus housing, administration, supervision, academic adjacent components, social aspects, leadership training, field trips, and dorm life for high school students. It also offers a business simulation where students make real-time decisions that impact the share price of a fictitious public company. The competition is augmented by a pitch competition where students form small teams and work together to formulate a business idea using lessons learned about business and entrepreneurship. There are four sets of partners: individual colleges providing dorm space and classroom space, the National Student Leadership Conference providing administration, adult supervision, and teachers from the National Federation of Teaching Entrepreneurship. Inc. Magazine promotes the program and participates in the curriculum and structure. Teachers also participate in the judging panel and presentations for the group going to Columbia. Dan explains what his experience brings to the table and experiences gained through recruitment and outreach to CEOs who want to pay it forward and share their experience and knowledge.  The NSLC Model Dan explains the structure of the business, which is a joint venture between a group of partners, with the NSLC being the core strength. They have a solid foundation in hands-on interaction with students and parents, with full-time staff. Dan handles interaction with entrepreneurs, speakers, and judges, while NFTE handles teacher selection training and placement. Inc. provides promotional support and weighs in on content topics and speaker selection. The conversation turns to building long-term, intensive relationships with schools, which involve multiple administrators on both ends.  Dan explains that the typical profile of students attending is diverse, from introverts to Alpha students who demonstrate leadership and charisma. The teams are built accordingly, balancing EQ and IQ strengths. The diversity of the group, geographically, racial, racially, gender, and interest wise, is a plus for the experience.  The Curriculum and Learning Outcomes The curriculum for the program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of marketing, operations, finance, and leadership. It is an interactive program that includes topics like break even ratios, valuations, partnerships, and strategic alliances. One of the highlights was the introduction of AI in business models, which inspired students to explore new ideas and Dan shares the range of impressive innovative ideas the students developed.  The program fits well with traditional business education programs like Junior Achievement, which has an academic bias and advisors. The program mixes students from various backgrounds into the same classroom, allowing them to learn from each other, teachers, mentors, and pitch judges. This exposes students to meaningful, actionable concepts and practices every day.    The Experience that Led to the Program Dan talks about how his experience led to establishing the program and making it work. From a Bootstrap startup to his business growth and sale journey, he believes that having a Inc. 5000 badge gave him credibility and familiarity with the pool of entrepreneurs he would tap as speakers. He believes that trust, openness, willingness to take risks, and willingness to help before asking for help are the core of the language he speaks. Dan explains how his background integrated with the program and opened doors to partners and contributors.  Volunteering at NSLC To become involved with the program, Dan suggests starting at NSLC leaders.org. The speakers and mentors and pitch judges include Inc. 5000, EO Entrepreneurs Organization; Shark Tank CEOs, and Harvard alumni. The entrepreneurial community is a caring, open, and Pay It Forward group, and Dan encourages connecting with others and helping in return. This week, we welcome Susan Rietano Davey and Kelley Kelley Biskupiak, co-founders of Prepare 2 Launch U (PLTU), a learning company that provides instruction, inspiration, and community primarily to women and caregivers navigating work-life transitions along the continuum of life. In 2020, FourBlock joined forces with PTLU to create a comprehensive, instructional career transition program for military spouses looking to return to work or pivot into new careers. In this episode, Kelley and Susan are joined by Lisa Stern, Ed.D., FourBlock's Director of Program Impact and Assessment and our podcast co-hosts: Lindsey Pollak, career and workplace expert, New York Times bestselling author, and FourBlock Board member; and Mike Abrams, FourBlock founder and Afghanistan veteran. Over the course of the episode, Susan and Kelley discuss their professional backgrounds and how PTLU started, and the group discusses how the joint FourBlock-PTLU Military Spouse Career Readiness Program came to be, what they have learned together from working with military spouses, what the future of the program holds, and what it means to be ‘ready' to apply to the program. The FourBlock-PTLU Military Spouse Career Readiness Program features live video coaching, flexible online learning modules, and all the instruction, tools, and inspiration a military spouse will need to navigate her or his way to a meaningful career. Military spouses who complete the program also gain access to an expanded community of FourBlock alumni, employers, and instructors for additional networking and mentorship. The program is offered at no cost. As career women and moms, too, PTLU co-founders Kelley and Susan have been helping women navigate work-life transitions for a combined 30 years. Susan and Kelley met while speaking at a women's conference in 2016. At the time, they were both independently consulting with companies and coaching a range of women (from seasoned professionals to young women navigating new motherhood) through life and career transition. Immediately, they felt a connection and knew that they could better help more women if they teamed up. So, the two joined forces first to share clients, then to run workshops, and, ultimately, to create the learning company Prepare to Launch U that provides instruction, inspiration, and community to women navigating work-life transitions along the continuum of life. Their original, signature online career re-entry course boasts students in 26 states and counting. In just a few years, Prepare to Launch U has introduced multiple online and live instructional offerings including a first-of-its-kind online maternity leave planning course, a proprietary family leave planning course on the LinkedIn Learning platform, and widely popular live corporate workshops on Negotiating and Work-Life Synergy, to list just a few. Susan and Kelley regularly collaborate with universities and Fortune 500 companies, and they are sought-after speakers and moderators for conferences across the country.   ABOUT US Welcome to the FourBlock Podcast, a show that examines veteran career transition and the military-civilian divide in the workplace. This week's guest is Dr. Lisa Stern. Dr. Lisa Stern has three decades of workforce and career development experience, including extensive experience executing successful veteran employment programs. Her passions lie in providing veterans with the critical self-advocacy skills they need to be successful and thrive in the civilian workforce and training employers on military cultural competency.  Lisa received a bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of Maryland, a master's degree in Vocational Special Education from The George Washington University, and a post-masters certificate in Veteran and Military Behavioral Health from Widener University. Frustrated with the negative narratives and stereotypes associated with transitioning service members and veterans, she returned to school, earned her doctorate from The George Washington University in Human and Organizational Learning, and received the 2019 Outstanding Dissertation Award from the University Council for Workforce and Human Resource Education for her research on Post-Military Career Construction. She continues to work on shifting the veteran transition research dialogue from one of career dysfunction, barriers, and problems to one of solutions and positive results. Lisa is currently the Director of Program Impact and Assessment at FourBlock. ABOUT US Welcome to the FourBlock Podcast, a show that examines veteran career transition and the military-civilian divide in the workplace. General Charles Krulak coined the term "Three Block War" to describe the nature of 21st-century military service defined by peace-keeping, humanitarian aid, and full combat. But what happens next? Veterans are often unprepared to return home and begin new careers. We call this the Fourth Block.  FourBlock is a national non-profit that has supported thousands of transitioning service members across the nation in beginning new and meaningful careers.  Mike Abrams (@fourblock) is an Afghanistan veteran, FourBlock founder, director of the Columbia University Center for Veteran Transition and Integration, and author of two military transition books. He'll be representing the military transition perspective. Lindsey Pollak (@lindsaypollak) is a career and workplace expert and New York Times bestselling author of three career advice books. Lindsey will be representing the civilian perspective of this issue.  Veterans, explore new industries and make the right connections. Find a career that fits your calling. Business as a Force for Good | EP 151: Kate Hayes, Echoing Green

Business with Purpose

Today’s Purpose: You don’t have to be in the public sector or start your own charity to make a difference in the world. You can make a huge impact with business! It’s possible to be in both the corporate world and non-profit world and lead the way in social responsibility. Today’s guest is Kate Hayes, who oversees Echoing Green’s “Ecosystem Programming’ to find, fund and support early-stage global leaders who have incredible ideas to change the world. 2:24 - The Kate 101 During college, Kate studied neuroscience and was interested in knowing how change happens. While working in Boston, she stumbled upon a mobile healthcare clinic that was started by an Echoing Green fellow. Kate’s career made a sharp turn from medicine to the non-profit sector, digging deep into understanding nonprofits and the role of the private sector in supporting them.    In her first role with Echoing Green, Kate connected business leaders to their purpose and helped them understand their mission, connecting them to the social change ecosystem. In her new role as Director of Ecosystems, Kate helps connect nonprofits across the globe to help make an even greater impact.  5:15 - What Exactly Does Echoing Green Do? Echoing Green is named after a poem by William Blake about making the world a better place. The fellowship program is the backbone of Echoing Green. It provides enough seed funding for organization founders to get started and helps with a portfolio management structure for clear planning and developing a strong business acumen.  Echoing Green creates community by connecting social entrepreneurs with each other for collaboration and support in the first few years of their organizations and beyond. A big priority is determining how to access to capital whether philanthropic or investment and connecting leaders to a broader community who cares about similar issues. A lot of businesses think you have to do something drastic like start a business or nonprofit based on a social cause. However, businesses can get involved, even if they’re not a charity or nonprofit. 10: 31 - Where Do We Start? There are so many people who want to make a difference in the world, whatever their career path, and Echoing Green helps them figure out exactly how they can do that while remaining in the private sector. For those ready to dive in, Echoing Green helps people identify what issues matter to them, and sends them on a domestic site visit to understand first hand how change is happening on the ground. For those who are overwhelmed with the endless possibilities of affecting social change, Echoing Green helps them connect with what they care most about and matches that to their skillsets.  It’s ok to just take baby steps on your own while also bringing people to your team to help you implement those steps. Outside support is what really helps us thrive in our efforts to be involved in social change. 20: 30 - Diversity in Leadership Kate was part of a group of governance practitioners where it was communicated that board diversity was not only not priority, but not important. She saw an opportunity and became very passionate about communicating need for diversity in leadership. This has to start with organizations defining what diversity means in relation to their cause, whether age diversity, racial diversity, or all of the above and more. Boards need a shared understanding of the impact that diversity can have on creating effective change in communities. Boards need to look outside of their circles to find as broad a pool of leaders as possible.  There may be major fundraising implications for Boards that don’t take diversity seriously. Once you’ve achieved a more diverse board, it’s as equally important to create trust, inclusivity, and equality. It’s about having in intention in everything you do, admitting mistakes, and getting uncomfortable. 35: 59 - Getting To Know Our Guest Find out what Kate is grateful for, what she would do differently when no one’s watching, something you’d never guess about her, and what books she’s reading (Moms, take note)! Memorable Moment: [spp-tweet tweet="Take a step toward embodying purpose rather than just finding it." - Kate Hayes] Article on diversity on boards: https://ssir.org/articles/entry/a_roadmap_to_better_boards Website: https://www.echoinggreen.org/about-echoing-green Meet Your Guest: Kate Hayes serves as Echoing Green’s Director for their Catalyze Ecosystem programming. She oversees several programs at Echoing Green, including Direct Impact, an innovative board leadership program designed to prepare the next generation of board members and transform nonprofit boards. She also manages Echoing Green’s alumni programs, ecosystem building and place-based strategy work, and internal program operations. She leads retreats, workshops, and immersive site visits focused on leadership development, purpose, strategic governance, philanthropy, and social entrepreneurship. Prior to joining Echoing Green, she worked as Director of Evaluation and Program Impact in the national office of Minds Matter. Kate currently sits on the Executive Committee at the Northfield Mount Hermon School, where she serves as Vice President of the Alumni Council. Kate has written for the Stanford Social Innovation Review, Forbes, and across the web about issues related to leadership, purpose, social entrepreneurship, and nonprofit boards. She holds a degree in Behavioral Neuroscience from Northeastern University.

We've recently had David Humphries and Nancy McDonald of Global Communities on the show and today we are pleased to welcome Milton Funes who is the Director of Program Impact and Learning at Global Communities. An engineer by training, he originally became involved in international aid work when Hurricane Mitch struck Honduras in 1998. Global Communities has been operating in Honduras for 35 years and is extremely effective in not only assisting people impacted and traumatized by disaster -- but also giving local people the tools and education necessary to rebuild their lives, livelihood, and communities. A number of aid organizations have made the mistake of going to a country and just talking and talking -- forgetting the importance of listening to learn. Milton Funes has 15 years of international development experience, with expertise in NGO capacity building, health, social infrastructure, urban/rural planning, micro-finance and economic development. In his current role as Director of Program Impact and Learning, he leads a team focusing on taking lessons learned in the field and disseminating across the development field and other interested parties.
