Al Smith joins the "Wake Up" team from Catholic Community Radio to discuss Archbishop Sheen's Book of Sacraments available through Sophia Institute Press. https://www.sophiainstitute.com/products/item/archbishop-sheens-book-of-sacraments   His cause for canonization is progressing, and his videos and books are widely viewed and in persistent demand. But of all his writings, Archbishop Fulton Sheen's most influential and practical guides, by far, were These Are the Sacraments and Three to Get Married.  These two books are once again available in this rich single volume, along with comprehensive commentaries by the late, revered Father John Hardon—themselves a powerful tutorial in how to read the great archbishop. “We cannot begin to guard our faith unless we understand what we believe,” notes Fr. Hardon.   Controversy was brewing and confusion sewn among Catholics by the time Sheen wrote these classics. He shies away from nothing, even while teaching traditional doctrine in appealing and unique prose. With Bishop Sheen and Father Hardon as your guides, you'll learn: Why no sacrament is “more significant” than any other, though their natures differ markedly  How Protestantism, even at its most alluring, undermines sound doctrine Why the sacraments have both “power and efficacy” How Baptism confers “the infusion of virtues” How the sacramental rites in the early Church differed from now How Christ Himself instituted each sacrament The power and meaning of the tabernacle The Old Testament roots of the Eucharist How to “examine” your conscience  How the Last Rites expel sickness from the soul The twelve dimensions of the sacrament of Holy Orders The most critical spiritual strategies for married couples The difference between Christian and non-Christian marriages   To order a copy of the book, please visit - https://www.sophiainstitute.com/products/item/archbishop-sheens-book-of-sacraments   God Love You.

The Rev. Brad Sullivan Emmanuel Episcopal Church August 8, 2021 Proper 14, B Ephesians 4:25 - 5:2 John 6:35, 41-51 “These Are the Pale Deaths Which Men Miscall Their Lives” We aren’t wretched, you know? Paul writes in Ephesians about ways which we want to give up: lying, anger, bitterness, wrath, slander, evil talk, malice, stealing, all of these and more. These ways of being live inside of us. They are a part of us, or maybe they have become a part of us. Perhaps they weren’t there initially and only came to dwell within us as we were hurt and broken throughout our lives. In any case, we have lying, anger, bitterness, wrath, and all of these ways dwelling inside of us. We are, however, not wretched and terrible. Our truest selves, are kind, tenderhearted, forgiving, loving. We are made in God’s image, and so the beauty of love, forgiveness, tenderheartedness, and kindness is intrinsic to who we are. Those ways of life are our truest selves. We are not wretched. We are beautiful. Now again, the other ways, bitterness, anger, all of those, are part of us. We may call them our inner demons, and we’ll likely never be rid of them. As much as we may strive for love, forgiveness, and beauty, these darker parts will always come back, rearing their heads. We can fight them, but that’s like fighting fire with fire. We can pretend they aren’t there, but they’ll just gradually take over. Rather than fighting them or denying them, I suggest (as a friend of mine suggested) that we dance with them. Maybe have them over for a meal. Offer them some coffee or tea. Just don’t feed off of them, for they are the things that bring death. One of my favorite bands, Metallica, has a song called, To Live Is to Die. The short and poignant lyric of this song is, “When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives. All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?” I’m fairly certain I’ve used that quote before in a sermon, though what I didn’t know previously is that the first part of that quote comes from 17th century German, Lutheran theologian and minister Paul Gerhardt. The second half of the lyric comes from Metallica’s former bassist, Cliff Burton. That is a beautiful blending of sacred and secular by my favorite heavy metal band, and it shows this need that we all have for healing and salvation, from all the pale deaths that we miscall our lives. Taking these quotes from a Lutheran theologian and a heavy metal bassist, we can apply this lyric to Paul’s writing from Ephesians that we heard today. “When a man [is bitter, angry, wrathful, and all of those other ways of death] he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives. All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?” These ways Paul writes about truly are the ways of death, and when we feed off of them, we are feeding off the bread of the pale deaths which we miscall our lives. When we live these ways, we murder parts of the world. Paul writes in Romans 6:23, “the wages of sin is death…” What was the first sin that we hear of in scripture? Garden of Eden, eating the fruit of the tree which God said not to eat. So what was that first sin? Disobedience? Mistrust? Desire for power rather than a good relationship? Bitterness at being told “no”? Stealing what wasn’t theirs to take? Believing and living the serpents’ lie? Which of those was the first sin? Id’ just say “yes,” all of them. Adam and Eve wanted something good, maybe greater power, maybe to sate their curiosity, maybe just a tasty piece of fruit. In any case, God had said, “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.” Well, they didn’t exactly die, at least not physically. Their relationship with God, however, took a drastic cardiac arrest kind of turn. Their relationship with each other was deeply harmed. When they ate of the bread of bitterness, mistrust, desire of power over relationship, living a lie, they fed off of the pales deaths which we miscall our lives, and they murdered some part of the world. “The wages of sin is death,” Paul writes. Now remember, sin does not mean we’re wretched and terrible. Sin is missing the mark: seeking something good, but missing the good we seek and hitting something less good or something harmful instead. These harmful things end up hurting us and others - our relationships are broken. We find these things to bring pale deaths rather than life. Now again, these harmful ways are a part of us, but they aren’t parts that we need to hate. When these parts of ourselves start speaking up, we dance with them, or have some tea with them. They may have something important to say about ourselves or about the world. When I’m angry about something in the world, there may be something I could do to help make it better. When I’m bitter towards someone, there may be something going on in me that I need to address, or maybe a broken relationship that I need to tend to and work to heal. So we can listen to our anger, and bitterness, etc., over a cup of tea, and we learn what they can teach us about ourselves and the world, but we don’ feed off of them. Jesus teaches us not to feed off of these pale deaths. Rather, Jesus teaches to eat the bread of life. “I am the living bread that came down from heaven,” Jesus says. “Whoever eats of this bread will live forever…” “I am,” Jesus says. “I am.” “God is.” Remember that “I am” is the unspeakable name of God. “I am the bread of life.” God is the bread of life. God dwells within all of us, and we are made in God’s image. The bread of life is within us all. Kindness, tenderheartedness, forgiveness, love: these are all aspects of God, aspects of Jesus, the bread of life which dwells within us all. To eat the bread of life is to feed off our truest selves. When Jesus gave his life, his body, his flesh as the bread of life, we recognize Jesus as someone other than us, a human who lived a couple thousand years ago, a human who is also God. Jesus is that particular God-incarnate man, and he is the particular bread of life. Jesus is also something, someone who is not external to us, not other than us. Jesus is that particular God incarnate man, and Jesus is also our truest selves. We are all one with God, made in God’s image, and Jesus lives within us all, not as something external, but as who we are. The bread of life is shared and eaten as we reach out to Jesus who is wholly other than us, and the bread is shared and eaten when we feed off of the kindness, tenderheartedness, forgiveness, and love which is our truest selves. The bread of life is part of us. The bread of life dwells within us, and the bread of life dwells among us, in community, in the communion we share. Rather than feed off the pale deaths which we miscall our lives: bitterness, wrath, anger, lies, murdering some part of the world, and rather than fighting against those things, we dance with them, we invite them for tea. We learn what we can, and we let them go. We aren’t wretched. We aren’t terrible. We are kind. We are tenderhearted. We are forgiving. We are loving. Those are our truest selves, beautiful and wonderful. When we live those truest parts of ourselves, when we feed off of that bread, we’re feeding off the bread of life which is Jesus, and when we feed off that bread, we bring life to the world.

I've broken down the timeline before I am sure, but God created the Heavens and the earth in 6 days. For God 1 day is a 1,000 years. Prophetically God allowed for us this world for 6,000 years. The 7th day God rested and the 7th day is the 1,000th years that would remain left or the 1,000 year Reign with Christ as described in Revelations. Many Scholars believe Jesus died either 28D or 33AD. No matter the exact date or time, These are the Last Days. Whether Christ comes in 2028 or 2033 or somewhere after or between “These are the Last Days.” It truly doesn't take a rocket scientist, to decipher the days that we are living in, to feel the spiritual forces of darkness at work all around us. These Are the Ones Who Follow the Lamb by Rick Stuckwisch The Feast of the Holy Innocents is a rather shocking celebration. It is painful and hard even to think about such a brutal crime as the slaughter of those little boys of Bethlehem. But, why, oh why, for God's sake, must we celebrate that sad memory on this Fourth Day of Christmas? Yet, here it stands, precisely for God's sake, for the proclamation of His Glory, and for the sake of our life and salvation in Christ Jesus. In fulfillment of several Old Testament Prophecies, under the good and gracious will of God, and according to His Word, the Slaughter of the Holy Innocents is part and parcel of the Christmas story — no less so than the Shepherds of St. Luke's Gospel, or the Magi who have just departed for their own country by another way. We observe this day — indeed, we celebrate this Feast — not out of any morbid fascination with the gruesome details of Herod's wickedness. This is not Herod's story, in any case; nor was he the one calling the shots, his evil machinations notwithstanding. No, it is in the humility of repentant faith, under the Cross of Christ our Lord, that we confess His Cross and Passion on this day — His holy and precious Blood, and His innocent suffering and death — which are the real heights of His divine glory and the living fountain of peace on earth and good will toward men. This is what Christmas was and is about, the birth of the one Child who was born to die for us all. The Feast of the Holy Innocents, like every other Christian Feast, is a celebration of His Cross, which these young martyrs of Bethlehem were given to share in advance by a Baptism of blood. As throughout the Holy Gospel, you are given to find yourself in this story and to hear this Word of God in Christ addressed to you and to your circumstances under His Cross. It's not a checklist of rules and regulations with which to work your way into heaven, but a Word of the Gospel of the Cross whereby you are washed in the Blood of the Lamb. Thus are you called by this Gospel, not to work, but to be crucified, put to death, and buried with Christ Jesus, in order to be raised with Him, as well, to live with Him in His Kingdom in His righteousness, innocence, and blessedness. Thus are you called by God the Father Almighty to be His own dear child, to be united with His only-begotten Son in His crucifixion, death, and burial, unto the Resurrection of His Body and yours, to the Life everlasting of body and soul. Covered by the Blood of this Lamb, you are called out of Egypt through the waters of the Red Sea; fed by the living Bread from heaven in the desert; and led through the waters of the Jordan River into the Promised Land. This is the true Exodus, fulfilled in the Christ-Child, Jesus, by way of His own innocent death and sacred blood-shed. He gathers up into Himself (and He fulfills) the entire history of Israel, that He might then become and accomplish the salvation of the true “Israel,” that is, of all those who are the children of Abraham by faith — who are sons of God in Christ Jesus. He is Isaac, who was spared a sacrificial death at the hand of his father, that the Child of Promise might become the blessed Seed of Abraham in whom all the nations of the world are blessed. And He is Joseph, the son of Israel and Rachel, who was spared a murderous death at the hand of his kin, that He might prosper in Egypt and accomplish the Lord's great salvation for all people. And He is Moses, who was spared from the slaughter of the innocents at the hand of a tyrant Pharaoh, that He might be raised up by the mighty, outstretched arm of the Lord — in order to lead His people Israel out of slavery and death, into the freedom of forgiveness, life, and salvation. Yet, this same Child who is spared on this occasion, who is called out of Egypt as the very Son of God, He shall be the Firstborn Son who is sacrificed and slaughtered in the place of all the others. For He is the Lamb whom the Lord Himself provides for the requisite sacrifice. Indeed, He is the true Passover whose Blood covers His people — including you — from the angel of death, and whose Flesh is Meat indeed, your Meal of salvation. What Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Joseph and Moses, and all the others sons of Israel could not do (and could never have done or accomplished for themselves), He — the Son of God and Mary's Son — has done and accomplished for all of them, and so also for you and yours and all mankind. He has done so, ironically, by the way of His own voluntary suffering and death upon the Cross. Yes, it is by His death that He has conquered death and sheathed its sword. It is by His stripes that you are healed. It is by His Blood that you are cleansed and forgiven, your iniquities pardoned. Of course, the irony is that the victory of His Cross appears to be anything but a victory in the eyes of the world. It is so contrary to the so-called wisdom of the world and to anything that man would ever hope or expect. So, also, when you are given the Cross to bear, it feels like crushing defeat, and it can surely seem as though the Lord has abandoned you to the punishment, suffering, and death that you deserve for your sins. Then come the tears of mourning and loud lamentations, when you stubbornly refuse to be comforted, as though your life and every hope were done for. Truth be told, your old Adam is — and must be — crucified, put to death, and buried with Christ Jesus. And yet, it is precisely by and through His Cross that you are rescued from sin, death, and hell. Your death is life indeed in Him! That is, to be sure, the great paradox and divine mystery of the Christian faith and life, beginning with your Holy Baptism. It is by dying with Christ Jesus and bearing His Cross in faith that you share also in His Resurrection and live with Him forever. It is this divine paradox of the Cross and Resurrection — and therefore, also, the mystery of Holy Baptism — that we are given to perceive and celebrate in the Feast of the Holy Innocents. The wickedness of sin, death, and the power of the devil is not able to prevent or to thwart the great salvation of the Lord, because He has taken even the last and most fearsome enemy, death, and He has bent this terrible opponent to His own will, to serve His own good and gracious purposes for Life, for you and for all people. So it is that even the wicked death of innocent children must bow before Almighty God and serve to the praise and glory of His holy Name, for Christ Jesus' sake. In the death of the Holy Innocents, you are given a picture of your own death with Christ in Holy Baptism, wherein you are reborn as a child of God and enter His Kingdom with childlike faith. In each case, death is swallowed up in victory by the death of Christ Jesus Himself, the incarnate Son of God, upon the Cross. The blood of the infant martyrs of Bethlehem, like the blood of all the righteous martyrs from Abel to the end of the world, proclaims and gives witness to the precious Blood of Jesus Christ which cleanses you from sin. Thus are the tears of mourning sanctified, like the waters of Holy Baptism, to become a gracious and life-giving flood of salvation. Out of Egypt the God and Father of our dear Lord Jesus Christ calls you to be His own dear child. He calls you through the waters of Holy Baptism into the Resurrection and the Life everlasting. He opens your mouth to show forth His praise in both life and death, by placing on your tongue and on your lips the “new song” of the Cross. So are you called to follow the Lamb wherever He goes, and so do you follow Him through suffering and death into the Promised Land of heaven. There before the Throne of God and of the Lamb — gathered together with the Holy Innocents and with all the dear children of our Father in heaven (whose angels always behold His face) — there you feast upon the Lamb of God who is your Life and your Salvation, now and forevermore. Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears. In the valley of the shadow of death, fear no evil. Even in the land of the enemy, the Lord is with you. Here in the desert, between the Exodus and the verge of Jordan, you are fed by the hand of God with the very Bread of Life, and your thirst is quenched with the spiritual Drink that flows from the side of Christ, your Savior. “There is hope for your future,” declares the Lord, who speaks the Truth and does not lie. It is the sure and certain hope of His own Cross and Resurrection. This promise is for you and for your children, and for your children's children. It is for all who believe and are baptized in His Name. So shall you rise to see the Lord in His own territory, and you shall abide in the land of the living. In the Name + of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Gut Health MD: Dr. Will Bulsiewicz On Optimizing Your Microbiome (In A Pandemic)

“Your brain's best friend is your gut. You can't separate the two. If you have an unhealthy gut, it's going to affect your brain.”Will Bulsiewicz, MDWe are living in a moment of compounding collective stress---personal, pandemic, economic, civic, and political. This trauma and tumult comes with side effects both physical and psychological. How do we take care of our bodies during this incredibly stressful moment? Furthermore, how do we buttress our immune system to combat the virus? The answer, we are increasingly coming to understand, begins with the microbiome. In fact, you might be surprised to learn, the gut is home to 70% of our immune system. To glean a better understanding of what that means, I convened with Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, a lauded gastroenterologist & gut health guru whose life’s work is devoted to better comprehending the microbiome and the crucial role it plays in all facets of health, from brain function and hormone balance to weight management and everything in between.Affectionately known as 'Dr. B', Will is a graduate of Georgetown School of Medicine and a former chief medical resident at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and chief gastroenterology fellow at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. In addition, he received his Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) from Northwestern University and a certificate in nutrition from Cornell University. He's authored more than twenty articles in the top American gastroenterology journals and his New York Times bestselling book, Fiber Fueled: The Plant Based Gut Health Program For Losing Weight, Restoring Your Health, and Optimizing Your Microbiome, is a must-read primer on why gut health is so crucial--and everything you need to know to optimize it.Since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve lamented the mainstream media's lack of attention to caring for our immune system. So today we dive in.This is a conversation about all things microbiome and gut health. The mechanisms behind it and latest research findings. We discuss our epidemic of dysbiosis (lack of gut biome balance) and its relation to a litany of chronic diseases that unnecessarily plague too many. We explore the gut-brain connection. The paramount need to increase the biodiversity in our bodies and our environments. And (sorry carnivores) why fiber is king.In addition, in this time of excessive sterilization and sequestration, Dr. B provides practical takeaways on how we can improve our gut flora and optimize our immune system, without putting ourselves and others at risk. And finally, we talk fecal transplants. Because, let's face it, I can’t have a gastroenterologist on the show and not ask about that.It was an honor to to converse with Dr. B--a fresh, new mind making big waves on the plant-based, microbiome scene. Passionate, empathetic and whip-smart, I enjoyed every minute. And I promise you will walk away from this episode armed to take your health to the next level.Note: I first came across Dr. B's work by way of his many appearances on my friend Simon Hill's wonderful Plant Proof Podcast (which you should all check out). The pandemic prevented an in-person exchange, so this conversation was recorded remotely a few months ago. Apologies in advance for any audio issues. We did the best we could.Final Note: Will just released The Plant-Fed Gut, a comprehensive 7-week online course about microbiome health and reversing dysbiosis that goes beyond what he was able to offer in his book. To learn more and sign up, visit theplantfedgut.com/course/ (I have no affiliate or financial entanglement here--just sharing good information). The visually inclined can watch it all go down on YouTube. Dow Jones experts had predicted the rate would soar to 19.5% with another 8 million jobs lost, but the economists weren’t even close. The economy actually created more than 2.5 million jobs in May, the Labor Department reported. The May gain was by far the biggest one-month jobs gain in U.S. history since at least 1939. Supreme Court may consider making it easier to sue police for misconduct https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-may-consider-making-it-easier-sue-police-misconduct-n1225856 WASHINGTON — As calls grow nationwide for reforms in law enforcement following the death of George Floyd, the Supreme Court will soon announce if it will jump into the debate by considering whether it should be easier to sue police for serious misconduct. Law enforcement officers who behave badly are rarely prosecuted, so lawsuits brought by victims of misconduct are often the only way to hold them accountable. And there's no other way for victims to get compensation for a violation of their rights. But a string of decisions by the Supreme Court has made it very difficult for victims to win in court. These Are The Shifts That Allowed Me To Go From Selling My Expertise For Little To Nothing (Free) To $5k, $10k, $25k Sales Has someone ever asked you what it is that you've done that has totally transformed your business, what you do, and how you show up? Or you probably have never heard it before but hoping that someday you will be so successful that you get flooded with these questions a lot. If it's the total opposite, you're experiencing a lot of failures and setbacks, remember that it's a launching pad to take your business to the next level.  In this week's episode, you'll learn about:   Things that you need to shift to succeed as a business leader   Part One of ‘These Are the Shifts That Allowed Me to Go from Selling My Expertise for Little to Nothing' The first thing you need to shift is your negative mindset that if you can't afford it, no one can afford it. Second, you need to throw away your cape because you cannot save everyone. What happens often is when you're trying to save someone from themselves, you might work for free. Very often, a lot in hopes that you can get them to see the bright light at the end of the tunnel, and they'll eventually pay you. Or again, you start negotiating your fees and rates based on what you think somebody has the ability to pay. And that keeps you stuck. You can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves. You cannot save somebody who doesn't want to be saved. “My net worth will never exceed my self-worth.” — Shameca Tankerson (11:10-11:14)   Put your money where your mouth is, where your treasure is, your heart will also be. Because when that is aligned, they have something on the line. They have something at stake. Some of your businesses are in triage mode. You're not in a space where you can talk about helping people for free, but still, you're trying to do it, and then you find yourself struggling month in and month out. You've got to take the ass off your shirt off your chest, raise the standard and decide who you can serve right now. Look for the people who are looking for the life raft that they need. You have to offer and go after those people. You don't want to convince or push anyone. You want to pull people across the finish line. It's way too much work. Part Two of ‘These Are the Shifts That Allowed Me to Go from Selling My Expertise for Little to Nothing' The third thing that you need to do is to adopt this belief or get the understanding that your net worth will never out-earn your self-worth. Your past failures and setbacks may be speaking out loud but hold on to your positive affirmations and speak the truth that you want to manifest. There's a misconception that being confident is about bragging, but it's the other way around. No one's going to say that or talk to people about that better than you can. The more you stand up and speak, the more you will attract clients because you're letting them know what problem you can solve for them.   “Being confident is not bragging.” —  Shameca Tankerson (11:44-11:47) It's time to use your fear as fuel. Most people usually think it's a sign to run away, but it usually occurs when you're moving into an unknown zone. You feel uncomfortable because you haven't experienced it yet. So, whether it's raising your rates or talking to clients whom you thought at that time was out of your league, your body is wired that when you're doing something that's outside of your comfort zone, it's wired to pull you back. So, you have to learn that's how your body responds, and then you get to decide to do something different.   The fourth thing is understanding that confidence or getting anchoring in my spirit. You're the first person to sell your services, so get out there and sell more. Be vocal about it. Connect with people whom you can see from a distance seem to be engaging with you. Look for people whose needs match what you're offering. Lastly, flip the script on fear, using fear as fuel. Declare that you have big dreams and big goals. You make a positive impact and influence. You can do it!   About Shameca Tankerson   Shameca Tankerson is an award-winning business coach, national speaker, and bestselling author.
