Season 3 of the TennisWorthy Podcast is here, just in time for the Australian swing and welcomes a new host in ITHF President and ESPN commentator Patrick McEnroe. Patrick and Chris Bowers bring two stories from Hall of Famers Hana Mandlíková and Pete Sampras. In reliving two key moments from their careers, Mandlíková and Sampras focus on their mental resilience and tenacity in overcoming challenges. Mandlíková, once seen as a natural rival to Martina Navratilova, became a Czech national hero, winning major titles like the Australian Open and Roland Garros. However, she struggled to break through the dominance of Navratilova and Chris Evert in the mid-80s. After improving her fitness and mentality, Mandlíková triumphed at the 1985 US Open, defeating both Evert and Navratilova, with the unexpected help of a Tina Turner anthem.Sampras, on the other hand, learned a crucial lesson about perseverance after his loss to Stefan Edberg in the 1992 US Open final. This experience drove him to dedicate himself fully to the sport, which eventually led to his success, including his 1996 US Open victory. He shares how he battled both illness and subpar play to outlast Alex Corretja in four hours and nine minutes in the quarterfinal.Stay tuned later in January as Patrick brings listeners more stories from the Australian Open. Patrick Michael Rafter (born 28 December 1972) is an Australian former world No. 1 tennis player. He reached the top Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles ranking on 26 July 1999. His career highlights include consecutive US Open titles in 1997 and 1998, consecutive runner-up appearances at Wimbledon in 200 and 2001, winning the 1999 Australian Open men's doubles tournament alongside Jonas Bjorkman, and winning two singles and two doubles ATP Masters titles. He became the first man in the Open Era to win Canada Masters, Cincinnati Masters and the US Open in the same year, which he achieved in 1998; this achievement has been dubbed the American Summer Slam. To date, only two players have followed this feat: Andy Roddick in 2003, and Rafael Nadal in 2013. Rafter is the third man in the Open Era to reach semifinals or better of every Grand Slam tournament in both singles and doubles, after Rod Laver and Stefan Edberg, and remains the last man to date to accomplish this. Rafter is also the only player to remain undefeated against Roger Federer with at least three meetings, though the meetings took place early in Federer's career. He is also the only player with a winning record over the Swiss on all the three main surfaces: hard clay and grass.
Canadian tennis legend Daniel Nestor talks about his 12 Grand Slam doubles titles, his coming out party as a 19 year old defeating world #1 Stefan Edberg at the 1992 Davis Cup, winning his 2000 Olympic Gold Medal with Sebastien Leroux at the Sydney Games, winning [and loving the atmosphere--one million pounds spent just on FLOWERS!] at Wimbledon, playing a Pro-Am tournament where he was the ‘Pro' and The Great One Wayne Gretzky was the ‘Am,' his interactions with David Beckham/Donovan Bailey/Carl Lewis/Drake/Ben Stiller/Carl Lewis/Steve Nash/Jimmy Connors/Ivan Lendl/Bjorn Borg/John McEnroe/Sandra Oh/Eric Lindros, and why breaking up with your doubles partner in tennis is NOT much different from breaking up with your girlfriend! Daniel will be awarded the Order of Sport and inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame on October 23rd in Gatineau, Quebec...for more information, please visit Canada's Sports Hall of Fame at http://www.sportshall.ca/ and the Order of Sport Awards at https://orderofsport.ca/ TORONTO LEGENDS is hosted by Andrew Applebaum at andrew.applebaum@gmail.com All episodes available at https://www.torontolegends.ca/episodes/ Learn more about your ad choices. We hope you will enjoy listening to this episode! Back in the day, I guess. Nope, that doesn't really work, does it? T-Bone heard somewhere that birds can regenerate damaged hearing. It's not clear if we're talking about birds from rock concerts or those near other loud birds. But whatever the cause, it's quite cool they might give us clues for regenerative human hearing! Whether this leads to infinite numbers of heads remains unclear. If you think there's a topological difference between a water cup and a flatworm, let us know via email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). As the last true serve-and-volleyer to capture a singles Grand Slam, Aussie Pat Rafter brought uniqueness to the sport of tennis beyond just his playing style. In this episode, he and host Brett Haber leave few stones unturned, beginning with how he developed his playing style and modeling after legends Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker. Pat speaks the innate abilities needed to reach the top, and how players have changed from his generation to the present. He also takes listeners down memory lane, speaking to his Grand Slam memories, rivalries, and the difficulties of retirement.Pat Rafter is a two-time US Open singles champion, Australian Open doubles champion and former world No. 1. In 1998, he became the first man in the Open Era to achieve the American Summer Slam: winning the Canadian ATP 1000, Cincinnati ATP 1000, and US Open in the same year.
1991 men's singles Wimbledon winner Michael Stich tells us about how he got lucky in the fourth round, had a good record against Stefan Edberg, and his confidence levels before the final versus his compatriot Boris Becker. Stich also told Talking Tennis about his regret over the 1996 French Open final, what he does nowadays, plus his thoughts on modern day tennis, including the possibility that Carlos Alcaraz might win the Wimbledon title this year at the expense of Novak Djokovic. Folgende Songs haben wir heute auf die Playlist gesetzt:The Bates: Independent Love SongNightwish: The Greatest Show on EarthFür Euch stehen folgende Songs zur Auswahl:Fury in the Slaughterhouse: Time To WonderBlutengel: Black RosesBeastie Boys: SabotageDie "Mother of all Playlists" findet ihr bei Spotify und AmazonMusic.

Hvem vinder Roland Garros?

NUGGET CONTEXT Chris speaks about how Roger thought about his Coaches at various points in time and how he moved from Peter Carter to Peter Lundgren to Tony Roche to Paul Annacone to Stefan Edberg to Ivan Lubicic while having Severin Luthi as a constant in his team. He speaks about his judgment on some of these matters over his career. GUEST Roger Federer is somebody who needs no introduction. While, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have overtaken him in terms of the overall Grand Slams won, when there is a discussion about the Greatest of All Time (GOAT), all fingers very often still point to Roger. One could attribute that to his fluidity, his charm on and off court, his longevity, his stable family life, and much more. I had a unique opportunity to engage with Christopher Clarey, a veteran New York Times Correspondent who has been covering Sports at an Elite level for more than 30 years. From Bjorn Borg to Serena Williams. He has recently published the book - The Master: the Brilliant Career of Roger Federer. He gives us a behind the scenes account of Roger's journey starting from his childhood. We speak about how Roger handled his mental chatter, how he made choices that made him play a long innings, how he handled stress, the role of his parents in shaping his character, how his skills as a businessman are probably better than his skills on the court. We hope you enjoy the 100th episode. Published in March 2023. HOST Deepak is a Leadership Advisor and an Executive Coach. Romy recalls her time on centre court at the 1992 Australian Open. At the tender age of 17, she was one of the lines women calling the quarter-final between Stefan Edberg and Ivan Lendl.

Suurel spordiriigil Rootsil on naiste tennise maailma edetabelis olnud mitmeid aastaid vaid üks mängija, 26-aastane Rebecca Peterson, kes tegelikult rahvuselt eestlanna. Head kuulamist!

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

These days the Australian Open sits alongside the other Grand Slam tournaments as one of the best and most prestigious tennis events in the world, but it wasn’t always that way. In this episode, we tell the story of its transformative move from Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club to Flinders Park in 1988.Pat Cash, who lost back-to-back five-set finals in 1987 and 1988 talks us through it all, including what Kooyong was like as a venue, why his 1987 defeat to Stefan Edberg feels like the one that got away in his career, why a move to the new site was both necessary and a roaring success, the effect of the new surface known as Rebound Ace, and the epic back and forth he had with Mats Wilander in the classic 1988 final. We also hear from Pam Shriver - who won the women’s doubles title with Martina Navratilova in both years - about her experience.

Roger Federer and Stefan Edberg got together with Wilson to discuss the racquets that they have used in their careers and the legacy of Wilson’s tennis racquets. Edberg, Federer, and even Pete Sampras have had their own customized versions of Wilson’s Pro Staff. This racquet has the incredible record of 117 Grand Slam wins and is the most winning racquet of all time. More importantly, Federer and Edberg share their stories of changing to this racquet, adjustments made, and how the racquet impacted their game. I love how these two champions discuss which racquets they still have from their lifelong winning streak. Let’s dive right into Roger Federer and Stefan Edberg.
It goes without saying that we wanted to find a guest with a big enough reputation in the industry to withstand the enormous pressure of celebrating our 100th show. So, it’s a great pleasure to say hello to Donald Dell, one of the real legends of sports marketing folklore. He was the agent who signed the two most valuable and enduring shoe deals in sports history, Stan Smith and Adidas and Michael Jordan and Nike.Dell, now 83, is the Yale educated lawyer and former pro tennis player, who captained the US Davis Cup team in the 1960s containing Smith and Arthur Ashe, two megastars who became the founding clients of Proserv which Dell co founded in 1970. In an extraordinary career, Dell represented many of the giants of sport, from Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras to Nancy Kerrigan, Patrick Ewing and for a while at least, Jordan. So this is an hour of conversation that moves around from star to star and decade to decade, taking us inside the room with some of the great characters of the sports business, including Phil Knight, Horst Dassler and Mark McCormack to name just a few.If you’re a latecomer to Unofficial Partner, you can go back and listen to our entire back catalogue, for free, via the website or Apple Podcasts. and if you’ve been with us since episode one, we’re really grateful for your support and interest, and rest assured we’re just getting going. We spoke to Dell from his home in Maryland, Washington and we’re grateful to Steve Horowitz of Innercircle Sports for putting us in touch.
On this week’s episode, with actual tennis from Palermo to look back on and the Kentucky-Prague double-header to preview, we find ourselves in unfamiliar, but very welcome, territory. We react live to Fiona Ferro’s victory in Palermo, and discuss what the players have been saying in their pre-tournament press conferences, including Serena Williams on her caution over the virus, Coco Gauff on how she’s used her platform to tackle issues of social justice, Jo Konta on her American road trip, and Eugenie Bouchard on the possibility of a fresh start. Finally, after Roger Federer celebrated his 39th birthday last week, we get insight from Stefan Edberg about why he's advised Roger Federer not to retire in the same way he did. In 1985, a strawberry-blonde, unseeded, 17-year-old German named Boris Becker won Wimbledon, beating Kevin Curren in the final, and suddenly tennis had a new star. In what way did Becker bring levels of power and athleticism which hadn’t been seen before on a tennis court? And how did people react to his arrival on the world stage? We hear from Johan Kriek, the man who predicted Becker’s victory at Wimbledon after losing to him at Queen’s two weeks earlier, and Curren discusses his own run which saw him beat John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors without losing a set, before underestimating Becker’s big-match mentality in the final. Becker went on to have a lot more success at Wimbledon, including a hat-trick of finals against Stefan Edberg. The Swede tells us about their rivalry. Finally, we look at how fame changed Becker’s life forever, and not always for the better. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. When Michael Chang beat Stefan Edberg in the 1989 French Open final, he became the youngest man ever to win a Grand Slam title, but it’s his fourth-round match against Ivan Lendl which is most famous.Chang was trailing by two sets to love, but several moonballs, numerous bouts of cramp, and even an underarm serve later, he’d won the match and turned it into the stuff of legend. In an exclusive interview, Chang discusses his tactics to turn the match around, the way he got booed during the tournament after mentioning his faith, his relationship with Lendl, and how he coped during the tournament despite hearing news of the Tiananmen Square Massacre. We also analyse Chang’s performance in the final, hear from Edberg about how he let that match slip and how gutted he was to lose it, and look at Chang’s place in tennis history. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, featuring Matt Roberts.
Leo Lavalle , the winner of the 1985 Junior Wimbledon Championships, has lived an incredible life in tennis. As a pro he rose to 51 in the word and posted wins over Brad Gilbert, Anders Jarryd, and Stefan Edberg. After the great Hall of Fame player Raul Ramirez, he is the best player to have come from his country, and as a Davis Cup stalwart carried the hopes and dreams of Mexican tennis onto the court with him for a record 14 years. On this episode of Under Review, Leo Lavalle, now a broadcaster for ESPN’s tennis coverage in Mexico, is going to explain why the Acapulco Open is fast becoming a tennis fan destination. He’ll share what it was like to turn pro in the mid 80’s as racquet technology and fitness regiments were changing drastically. Leo will explain why Davis Cup was where he played his best tennis, and why the team format was so important to him. He'll tell us about a 16 year old Spanish phenom that he thinks is a male version of Coco Gauff. And he’ll share who he think can beat Rafa Nadal at Roland Garros. Leo Lavalle joined us from his home in Carretero , Mexico. We talked about tennis in length, via Skype. Mark Keil had an enormous success on the tennis court, especially in doubles. He won five ATP titles and played at prestigious tournaments- Wimbledon, Australian Open, and US Open, and beating major names along the way. Despite his success, Mark admits he often found himself trying to prove that he was good enough, compared to his older sister who was a tennis phenom herself, and his father, a highly esteemed professor who just happens to have an asteroid named after him. His mom pushed him to be disciplined and instilled a work ethic that helped him get to where he found himself on the tennis circuit. His achievements are something many tennis players dream of and few obtain, but after listening to this interview you might ask yourself, "Was it worth it at the end?"To find out more about Gabe and his work, please visit his website, aclearmind.com

He tells us how fatherhood has changed him and he wants more children “so let’s find the right woman” He also hints at the prospect of playing in America one day. Roger Federer: I’ve Missed My Best Chance Roger Federer tells Caroline Rigby that he has “missed his best chance” of gold in the singles at the Olympics, the world of tennis is “not all about Novak Djokovic”. He also says Stefan Edberg will continue to help him and “give him feedback” despite having parted company as his coach. Open Marriage Tennis player Arina Rodionova will have a busy Saturday. She’s in action as she tries to qualify for the Australian Open in the morning and then gets married in the afternoon! She tells us that even though she hopes to be back on court on Sunday it won’t stop her enjoying the champagne as she weds Aussie Rules footballer Ty Vickery. The Armless Archer Paralympian Matt Stuzmann tells us about the new archery record he has just claimed for the "The Farthest Accurate Shot in Archery" The new mark (A bullseye at a distance of 283.47 m) is made all the more remarkable by the fact that Matt has no arms. “This is a record that was originally set by someone without a physical disability… this is now a record that can be set by ANYBODY!” The Forgotten Story of England’s Youngest Cricket Captain The story of Monty Bowden, England's youngest ever captain and the man who lead England on their first tour of South Africa in 18. His short life was packed with incident. Bowden remained in South Africa after the tour and died three years later, buried in a cask of whiskey! Athens’ Opportune Olympic Legacy The issue of how to look after refugees fleeing from war torn parts of the world is still a big issue, particularly for countries like Greece. Authorities have now started to use former 2004 Olympic venues to house them. We are at the hockey and taekwondo arenas speaking to those seeing sanctuary there. Sporting Witness… Goes back to December 1967, when the legendary motorbike stuntman Evel Knievel made global headlines for the first time when he attempted to jump over the huge fountains outside Caesar’s Palace casino in Las Vegas. Evel’s attempt failed, but his showmanship and daredevil attitude – coupled with a host of serious injuries – helped make him an icon. We hear from Evel’s son, Kelly Knievel, and his widow, Linda Knievel. Credit: Cristiano Ronaldo with his son Cristiano Jr. CREDIT: Getty
