This week the Niners host the LA Rams in Levi's Stadium on Monday Night Football. There really is nothing like the feeling of playing on national TV, under the lights, at home, on the grass, against a divisional rivalry, and have it play on Monday Night Football, the original new football time slot. I still remember when I was young and they started playing on Monday nights and people thought they were crazy. But they were not, and people loved it and now we also have Thursday Night Football. So here we go.George and I sit down to review last week's game (OUCH!), noting some lessons learned and where the Niiners go from here. Then we take a peek at the Rams along with our college and NFL review. We also talk puppies, recovery, finding “Hidden Pearls” (people and organizations doing good work), and talk wine and movies. Our MVP veteran guest is Andi Ward. She is a Navy veteran with 2 deployments, a sex abuse survivor, a domestic abuse survivor, and someone who has successfully found sustained recovery and sobriety over alcohol and meth. This is a remarkable interview and a bit longer than our normal. But Andi has quite the story and has been through so much and has persevered, fought, struggled, got set back, relapsed, but never stopped climbing and moving toward the life she believed she could have and deserved. Andi now serves as the Director of Training and Resources for MVP (creating trainings and offerings for the national staff) and is also a trainer/strength coach at the elite performance & MMA gym, Unbreakable Performance in West Hollywood (Jay Glazer's gym and home of the Wednesday night in person MVP LA West Huddle). She is plenty busy but never too busy to lend a hand, sit and listen, and seek out new adventures to learn, grow, and serve others. I found this an inspirational and empowering interview with some gold nuggets on recovery, surviving and overcoming sex abuse, transitioning into and out of the military, and how the body is such a powerful tool in recovering from trauma. Lessons learned on how to rebuild trust in yourself, and then eventually with others. For Andi trust is a cornerstone to the recovery and healing process. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed sitting in on it. Thank you Andi! REMINDER: It is OK TO NOT BE OK (and to tell someone!!); and YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! If you are a retired military or former professional athlete, please go check out the MVP website and sign up.  Have a great week spreading love, kindness, healing, grace, and non-judgment! Much like last week, a warning before we begin: this episode contains the discussion of some fairly charged and unpleasant topics, including some deplorable ideas and music. Please be aware in advance that this show features some isolated samples and we've added them into this episode because we're discussing a difficult topic and we trust our audience to exercise their own discretion. Hopefully you find this to be an informative and a cautionary journey. Enjoy! Last week we put Ace of Base in the context of the wider Swedish pop music movement, and how on the face of it, there's really not that much about them that could lead for people to believe that they are some kind of secret Aryan pop project. This week we place the Nazi politics that Ufe courted in his teens into the wider context of Swedish politics itself. One of the members of that band he was in, Commit Suiside, went on to be the leader of Sweden's far-right Sweden Democrats party. We interrogate that idea of them being some Nazi pop group and dive into the album The Sign, look at some of the ideas conveyed in the lyrics and also take some very strange articles about this band to task for a multitude of different reasons. And then, we reach our conclusions - are this band Nazis or not? A fun episode, if a little dark. Hopefully you stuck with us. Next week, we're going in a vastly different direction… REMINDER: It's record club shipping time and we're sending some cracking albums to our subscribers. Want free albums every month? Progress to Perfection – Our Journey #4

Progress to Perfection – Our Journey #4 Clearly growing in the direction to perfection involves a spiritual construction project. By Pastor George Lehman Matthew 5:48 – “ Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is Perfect”  - The reason for the sermon series. We are all a project under construction. The construction process to “progress to perfection” is: 2 Peter 1:5-8 (NIV) – 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Before you build to penthouse level, you need to first have a solid foundation. Hebrews 10:38 (NIV) – “But my righteous” one will live by faith, and I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back. Add to your faith. Progress means:   Moving forward not backward, not idle but onward movement toward a destination; improving. Question: Are you improving? Matthew 5:15-16 (NIV) – 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. I bring this up because this very important area of spiritual progress to perfection, and it is extremely important in your growth of the final two steps. Note what they are: Brotherly kindness extends to the members of God's family. Love extends to the entire human race. #6 Brotherly kindness The definition of brotherly kindness: The Greek word for brotherly kindness is “Philadelphia”, involving 2 words: “Phileo” (love) and “Adelphos”(brother). It literally means “the love of brothers”. As used in the New Testament, “Philadelphia” describes the love which Christians cherish for each other. Romans 12:10 (LB) – Love each other with brotherly affection and take delight in honoring each other.  One big area we have given the enemy a foothold. Reminder: It lies with you and me to be a person that is loveable. Have you ever thought people need to love you then, how lovable are you or are you always miserable, critical, Mr. know it all, complaining, criticizing, no control over your bad attitude, being divisive?   This verse warns us: Titus 3:10-11 (NIV) – 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. 11 You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned. Therefore, it's brotherly kindness that provides a true sense of family, belonging as members of the Lord's body. God commands brotherly kindness. Without sincere love for our brothers and sisters… the Apostle John says… 1 John 2:9-10 (LB) – 9 Anyone who says he is walking in the light of Christ but dislikes his fellow man is still in darkness. 10 But whoever loves his fellow man is “walking in the light” and can see his way without stumbling around in darkness and sin.    1 John 4:7-8 (LB) – 7 Dear friends, let us *practice loving each other, for love comes from God and those who are loving and kind show that they are the children of God, and that they are getting to know him better. 8 But if a person isn't loving and kind, it shows that he doesn't know God—for God is love. *practice = practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.  It's about how you conduct yourself with others.   1 John 4:20-21 (LB) – 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but keeps on hating his brother, he is a liar; for if he doesn't love his brother who is right there in front of him, how can he love God whom he has never seen? 21 And God himself has said that one must love not only God but his brother too. This is a command I believe the church take very lightly. Jesus also made love the identifying mark by which the world can know we are His disciples. John 13:34-35 (LB) – 34 “And so I am giving a new commandment to you now—love each other just as much as I love you. 35 Your strong love for each other will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” 2 John 9 (LB) –  For if you wander beyond the teaching of Christ, you will leave God behind; while if you are loyal to Christ's teachings, you will have God too. Then you will have both the Father and the Son. The world doesn't pay too much attention to what they may perceive as minor doctrinal difference. However… What people do notice is love in a world filled with hate… …especially when such love is seen among individuals who come from various social, economic, and racial backgrounds! Attempting to proclaim New Testament Christianity will fail unless it is accompanied by a visible demonstration of true brotherly kindness. Galatians 5:13 …Rather serve one another in love. We must care for one another. Galatians 6:2-3 (LB) – 2 Share each other's troubles and problems, and so obey our Lord's command. 3 If anyone thinks he is too great to stoop to this, he is fooling himself. He is really a nobody. God requires that each of His children will be unity-lovers, promoting unity, living unity. Philippians 2:1-4 (Msg) – 1-4 If you've gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care— then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don't push your way to the front; don't sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don't be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. The amount of dis-unity that we often see within the body of believers – shocking!!! Back-stabbing, grudge-carrying, gossiping and slander and unforgiveness. This is all rooted in three simple words, “ME” – “MYSELF” – “I”. (PRIDE) When I'm focused on “ME” – “MYSELF” – “I”, I neglect the love of the brotherhood. Unity starts with “ME”.(Humbled, Surrendered and Obedient) Ephesians 4:2-3 (LB) – 2 Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. 3 Try always to be led along together by the Holy Spirit and so be at peace with one another. Develop brotherly kindness. Progress to perfection in this area of your life. 1 Peter 1:22-23 (LB) – 22 Now you can have real love for everyone because your souls have been cleansed from selfishness and hatred when you trusted Christ to save you; so, see to it that you really do love each other warmly, with all your hearts.  23 For you have a new life. It was not passed on to you from your parents, for the life they gave you will fade away. This new one will last forever, for it comes from Christ, God's ever-living Message to men.    1 Thessalonians 4:9-10 (LB) – 9 But concerning the pure brotherly love that there should be among God's people, I don't need to say very much, I'm sure! For God himself is teaching you to love one another. 10 Indeed, your love is already strong toward all the Christian brothers throughout your whole nation. Even so, dear friends, we beg you to love them more and more. When we fully realize how Jesus loved us and gave Himself for us… …we have no excuse to behave in any other way except adding to our faith, brotherly kindness. Hebrews 13:1 (Amp) – Let love of your fellow believers continue. This is an important part of your progress to perfection.

Dads of the world, UNITE! How do you follow the Beach Boys? Well, apparently it's by covering Electric Light Orchestra. Going from one grandad band to one dad band seems to make a crude kind of sense, even if immersing oneself in the music of ELO is…difficult.   Not because they're terrible. No no no. They are by no means a terrible band. Some of their music has aged well whereas some of it certainly has not (we're looking at you Discovery). One example of the former is their ridiculous foray into synth-pop with their ninth album, Time. Chosen by guest Alexander Volz from the wonderful podcast Every Album Ever (which you should absolutely check out if you're a fan of ours - they've covered a bunch of stuff we've covered, as well as some we want to cover in future), his rationale was pretty straight forward - it's a very polarising album and it should fit in well with our MO. And he's right. Despite still selling millions of copies, the claim that Time is an unsung album is a very fair one. The mid 70s were the band's creative and commercial high points - A New World Record (1976) and Out of the Blue (1977) were runaway successes for the band. After incorporating disco elements in 1979's Discovery, and tackling their first film soundtrack with Xanadu in 1980, Jeff Lynne was trying to find ways to keep the band sounding relevant and with Time, he largely succeeded.   A concept album about a man being transported from 1981 to 2095, the album sees Lynne and co ditch the string quartet they had used for the last decade and replace it almost entirely with synthesisers. The result is much like The Visitors by ABBA, a record that is very ahead of its time and sees the band use new technology to evolve their sound.    Sadly, the album seemed to mark the beginning of the end for ELO - after a poorly attended tour the band all but ceased playing live, and the follow up, 1983's Secret Messages, essentially killed the band entirely. 1986's Balance of Power was created and released as a way to fulfil contractual obligations and ELO simply vanished into the shadows. Aside from a brief re-emergence in 2001 to release the poorly received Zoom, Jeff Lynne kept ELO dormant until 2015.   In the period between Time and the present day the band never revisited this synth heavy sound. Which is a shame because you can hear lots of different genres of electronic music emerging from this one record. It'd have been cool to see what another album of this would have been like. Is this an unsung classic? We certainly think so. What say you? REMINDER: It's Record Club shipping time! Whether pretending to be surfers and getting slapped with fines from the manager for swearing or cavorting with transcendental meditation and falling out with one another, The Beach Boys were never quite what people thought they were. They were often at each other's throats, relationships were fraught a lot of the time, members of the band seemed to withdraw from the group and return whenever the mood suited them and that's before we even mention Brian Wilson's sometimes extreme battle with mental health. The story of the Beach Boys is weirder, sadder and madder than you could have ever imagined. We spent a lot of last week talking about that aspect of their career. The lore is so thick, in fact, that we had to stop only half way through their career because these guys have said and done a lot in the last 61 years. So this week, we pick up where we left off – the late 80s, when the began to slow down significantly when it came to their musical output, but refused to vanish entirely, becoming a legacy touring act with a rotating line up of ex-members and studio musicians alike, all revolving around Mike Love and Bruce Johnston.  Given the legacy of this band, we decided to offer up our own subjective interpretation of that legacy. Were The Beach Boys really at their best with Brian Wilson? Is Mike Love a bit of a dick? What about the extensive contributions of Carl and Denis Wilson, as well as Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston? Do the band deserve to be heralded as one of the greats? Can they even be Unsung? We answer all of these questions. Then we dive into the three albums that Vicki struggled to choose from - Wild Honey, Sunflower and Surf's Up. We do a bit of a dive into Wild Honey and Surf's Up before giving Sunflower the full Unsung treatment.  What do you folk think? Is Sunflower the most underrated and underappreciated Beach Boys record? Let us know what you think! REMINDER: It's Record Club shipping time! Did you know that The Beach Boys have 29 studio albums, 11 live albums and a staggering 61 compilation records? Before we agreed to do their 16th(!!!) album Sunflower at Vicki's behest, we knew it was going to be a huge undertaking but good lord, it was bigger than we could have ever imagined. And that's to say nothing of the tumultuous interpersonal relationships between the band members. On one hand, it makes sense that there would be some drama – they came up in the 60s and churned out records at a faster rate than The Beatles throughout that entire period. They were also teenagers when they began, so some discord was bound to arise as they grew up and started to change as people. Furthermore, they've been a band (yes, they're still going) for over 60 bloody years at this point. Falling out once or twice was sure to happen. And yet… It's hard to understand why these guys keep at it. For decades, literal decades, of their career, it seems like some members didn't even like each other all that much. The answer is (other than money, of course) the music. There is a lot of it, sure, but there's some  truly great stuff throughout their career. Ok, not their whole career: there's a lot of great stuff up until the late 70s. After that it's some serious Big Grandad Energy. As of writing, the band is 61 years old. There's a very good chance that they're the world's longest running band. The Rolling Stones started in 1962 – a year later than The Beach Boys – so as you can imagine, there's a whole lot to cover here. Which is why it's an epic two parter. In part one, Vicki takes us through their history right up until the 1980s. We talk about the music, the members, their relationships, the drink, the drugs, the mental health problems, the politics and of course the deaths.   Next week – the 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s (because aye, when this episode ends there's still just over 30 fucking years of general stuff to discuss) and Vicki tells why she had trouble deciding between Sunflower, Surf's Up and Wild Honey. How can you develop your erotic mind? The BRAIN is the best sexual organ we have! Engagement of the mind is important and developing eroticism can bring new energy into your relationship!  Fantasizing about and longing for your partner leading up to the experience itself, builds anticipation - a major turn on. The unknown, “what could happen next?” feeling, common in the dating phase, that can be so exciting. Fantasies fuel arousal; They are great bridges into the moment. Sharing these fantasies with your partner and exploring them together - opens a new door to vulnerability… “What do you like?” “What do you think about?” - Get specific! Reminder: It's OKAY to fantasize, to let your mind wander… don't judge your own thoughts, or your partners! Be open to vulnerability and use fantasies as an opportunity for connection. Strengthening your erotic mind will inevitably strengthen your bond and relationship.

Filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood brings a delicate but assured touch to everything she’s involved in, whether on the big screen with films like “Love & Basketball” and “Beyond the Lights,” or in the world of television with projects like the riveting limited series “Shots Fired.” Her latest film, Netflix’s “The Old Guard,” is no exception as the award-winning filmmaker fuses the superhero genre with an uncharacteristic tenderness in an adaptation of the Greg Rucka comic books series. In this week’s season premiere of “The Call Sheet,” Prince-Bythewood will take you through the new film’s production from beginning to end. She’ll discuss visual choices and editorial and music decisions, and she’ll contextualize the project within the overall framework of her career -- or, as you’ll soon hear her describe it, her fairytale. Eight Lessons I've Learned In the week's episode, I discuss the eight lessons I’ve learned during my time as a life and transformation coach. 1. There is tremendous variability in individual responses to change. Some clients need to work twice as hard to get half the results. This is not fair, but it's reality. 2. Many know what to do, but fail to execute. Being accountable to a coach, and having an objective eye helps them go from average to excellent. I think it's essential to define the word "objective" ~ not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts. 3. It's tough to predict success because it based on 90% mindset and 10% talent. You don't know where a client falls in that equation until they are faced with adversity. 4. Effort trumps talent in the end. I will always place my bet on effort. Talent gets bored and complacent. Effort always has something to prove. 5. Many overestimate the importance of the perfect plan and underestimate the importance of brutal consistency. I'll take the 80% plan for ten years, over the 100% plan you anguish over, never figure out, and never start. 6. Twenty-five years in the weight loss and fitness world has taught me this: Intelligent people can often be their own worst enemy. They know just enough about a lot of things to make them dangerous. For example, they will go to extreme measures to find a hack or cutting edge idea that makes them feel like they have outsmarted the system. When in actuality, all they are doing is avoiding the boring, dull, challenging, yet highly effective BASICS that actually work. Reminder: It is the commitment and consistency to the daily routine that yields the win. (Little Hinges Swing Big Doors) 7. The #1 transformation progress killer is anxiety/stress. It leads to questioning the plan and eventually quitting it altogether. The best advice for diminishing anxiety and stress is to avoid focusing on deceptive short term results, such as scale weight, bullshit bio-impedance body-fat scales and scans, and other people's highlight reels. Focus instead on precision in the DAILY process: tracking/measuring food, movement, mindset and sleep duration, and quality. Point being, you achieve remarkable LONG TERM results by nailing the DAILY process. 8. Striving for balance is admirable, but don't be surprised when your progress is eclipsed by those who don't give a shit about balance.
