At the beginning of 2012, Carly Rae Jepsen was working as a waitress in Vancouver, BC, dropping off demo tapes and playing coffeeshops in her free time. By the end of that year, she was a global superstar thanks to her hit song "Call Me Maybe". Since then, Carly has become a pop fixture with four chart-topping albums. She joins Guy to talk about how she handled the pressure of her sudden rise to fame and built a career, her secret to good collaboration, and the inspiration behind her latest albums: "The Loneliest Time" and "The Loveliest Time".Links from the show:Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'ConnorCarly's Canadian Idol AuditionCall Me Maybe Music VideoCarly as Cinderella on BroadwayThe Loneliest TimeBends Official Lyric VideoThe Loveliest TimeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Louie and Brennan dig into Carly's aesthetic stasis in recent years, the swings-and-misses from Loneliest's attempts to find new avenues for her music, and how Loveliest presents her loosest and most exciting batch of songs in a very long time, serving as a potential jumping off point for a new phase of Carly's career. The Loveliest Time is Carly Rae Jepsen's seventh studio album, and a companion piece to her fifth studio album, The Loneliest Time. The artist refers to the album as a “B-side in every sense of the word,” featuring songs created during the same time period and era of The Loneliest Time, that she had “always intended to put out.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Carly Rae Jepsen is known for her upbeat brand of pop music that looks at love, life's little joys and heartbreak through danceable melodies and catchy hooks. But when the pandemic hit, Carly found herself coping with a type of loneliness that inspired a whole new sound – resulting in her latest album, “The Loneliest Time.” She tells Tom about making the album and reflects on 10 years of her first hit song, “Call Me Maybe.” Plus, Montreal-based singer Bells Larsen is gearing up to release his sophomore album, “If I Was, I Am,” later this month. While it promises to feature the same tender lyricism and intimate sound as his debut, the record is Bells Larsen's first since transitioning. He'll preview the song “Ten Hands” off the album and talk about singing with his new baritone voice.

This week, we're dialing up the gay to MAJOR as we submit ourselves to queer-indie girl group THE ACES to discuss their newest LP 'I've Loved You for So Long'. As a long-time Ace Face, Quincy has a lot to say (and teach) during the track-by-track, including the bts delays for this album (& their last one), the coming-of-age-as-a-queer-person themes surrounding the project, and what you can always expect in a release from these girlies. ALSO discussed: BEBE REXHA's assault by phone at her NYC show, TROYE SIVAN's filthy disgusting rollout for his new single 'Rush', CARLY RAE JEPSEN's 'companion project' to The Loneliest Time, and the WHITE HOUSE's questionable decision to not let one of BETTY WHO's dancers perform because of his OnlyF*ns... AT THE SPA: DAGNY (Same Again [For Love]). HAYLEY KIYOKO (Greenlight), PURPLE DISCO MACHINE (Bad Company), LEIGH-ANNE (Don't Say Love), AMAARAE (Co-Star), ROSE GRAY (Happiness), IDINA MENZEL (Move), and SAM SMITH & MADONNA (Vulgar). It's Halloween time once again, and we are celebrating with an iconically spooky game! Well, first we're doing our civil duty as gay podcasters & sharing our love for Carly Rae Jepsen's The Loneliest Time, as well as briefly going over all the drama surrounding Bayonetta 3 on the internet this past week, but after that we're talking ALL about THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: MAJORA'S MASK-- the infamously dark sequel to Ocarina of Time released for the Nintendo 64 in the year 2000. For a 22 year old game, Majora's Mask was absurdly ahead of its time, having lots to say about death, grief, acceptance, climate change, heroism, small acts of kindness and more! Not to mention just how much there is to look at thru a queer lens. We also get into our theatre degree jush to talk about the history and cultural significance of masks and mask making. Also, this is the Zelda game that gave us the gay icon that is Tingle, so there's that. Later, in What Else We're Gay For: we talk Marvel Snap, House of the Dragon, and Chainsaw Man========Get in touch with us!EMAIL US at gayforplaypodcast@gmail.comFOLLOW G4P Twitter: @GayForPlayPodInstagram: @GayForPlayPodTwitch: twitch.tv/gayforplaypodSupport the Show & Unlock Bonus Episodes on our PATREON========CREDITSIntro and outro music by Connor Marsh (@connorjmarshmallow)Show art by Benny Kessler (@retro.spectacle.studio)Special thanks to our patrons: Blueberri Mary, Elijah Punzal, Trevor McTavish, Travis Ryans & Martha Turner

How will these two albums fair in the BoF gauntlet? Tune in as Ehren, Simon, and special guest Luke Miller dive deep into each album and artist to help decide if these albums are bops or flops. But in these last few years Jepsen has become a full-blown pop star, thanks to well-received albums like Emotion and Dedicated. Her new album mixes hard-driving pop jams with breezy ballads.

Carly Rae Jepsen is a writer's writer. “I am very excited about the idea of writing it in all directions,” Carly says — and for the making of her latest album, The Loneliest Time, that meant writing literally hundreds of songs. On this episode of Object of Sound, Hanif and Carly Rae Jepsen talk about the unique collaborative process that went into narrowing that collection of songs down to the thirteen tracks on the album. Carly opens up about the challenges and opportunities of songwriting during the pandemic, and her drive to keep challenging the idea of what a pop song can be. Inspired by Carly's recent experience at a James Taylor concert, Hanif closes the episode with a playlist of great songs to cry to. For the playlist of songs curated for this episode, head over to radio.sonos.com. This episode is part of our mini series, “The Wonders of Songwriting,” three special episodes on Object of Sound devoted to the art of how songs become songs. Hanif talks to artists Ravyn Lenae, Nick Hakim, and Carly Rae Jepsen to understand where their love of language comes from, how words become images become music, where the ideas begin, and how they morph as they move from the page into the intangible space of melody and vibration. If you're a writer or maker in need of a creative refuel, check out Hanif's recent interview on Creative Pep Talk, which also features lessons from artists we've interviewed here on Object of Sound.Credits:This show is produced by work by work: Scott Newman, Jemma Rose Brown, Kathleen Ottinger, Rhiannon Corby, and by Hanif Abdurraqib. Carly Rae Jepsen talks about embracing loneliness on her new album, The Loneliest Time, and reflects on her relationship with Call Me Maybe after more than a decade. Rollie Pemberton, John Cullen and Maddy Kelly break down the major arts and culture stories of the week, including new music from Blink-182, Animal Collective's cancelled tour and why climate change activists took their frustration out on a van Gogh masterpiece.
