Laura Simpson had just brought new life into the world, before her own life was hanging in the balance. Moments after delivering her baby girl, her fourth child, she suffered a catastrophic haemorrhage that saw her lose over eight litres of blood. She needed around 40 blood products to save her life. Her unplanned hysterectomy has added an incredibly difficult layer of grief to the birth trauma she's been trying to work through while juggling farm life and mum life. *And a quick warning, this episode might be triggering for anyone who has experienced birth trauma. Laura Simpson argues that online meetings have good for individuals and companies, and that we should be wary of returning to the status quo. The meeting, says Laura, is the fundamental unit of white collar working life. And in the last couple of years it's undergone a revolution - out have gone the suits, glass tables and rigid hierarchy; in have come moments of vulnerability, the hand raise function, and unannounced visits from children. It's happened in plain sight, but its consequences have been little discussed. Laura is a Global Director at advertising and marketing company, McCann Worldgroup. As she shares stories from some of the meetings she has been in, she explains why she believes this change has created a re-imagining of what meetings could be, and a rebalancing of power within them - with more people, and in particular more junior people and those who previously felt marginalised, empowered to contribute. The final interview from the 2021 Calgary folk music festival. Dan Mangan – artist, entrepreneur, father, husband, and surprisingly a great middle-distance swimming champion. Two time Juno winner Dan's most recent album was More or Less. (2018) After many years of small venue performances, Dan co-founded Side Door Access with Laura Simpson. “We believe artists deserve more control and fewer gatekeepers, and that an empowered arts community will produce the most interesting, diverse and daring ecosystem of expression” What started out as a local support system for artists (and audience) was completely re-arranged to bring music to all of us during the pandemic. Everyone involved at Side Door was swept along by a flood of requests and opportunities. Including Dan Mangan. Now he's seeing light at the end of the Covid tunnel and can start to pick up the remnants of his music and performing career. When we talked a couple of weeks ago, Dan was getting ready to engage in his first public performance in many months at the Calgary Folk Music Festival. Dan and I cover some of the above and more. You can look forward to a steady flow of songs and albums to come from Dan in the next year and a half. This is the complete interview. Thank you Dan!

Being a musician is tough during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Holding concerts and shows have become almost impossible. Good thing that online concerts have become a beacon of hope, but only if you know how to utilize it well. In this episode, Bree Noble invites to the show Laura Simpson from Side Door to talk about how you can triple your income from live performing online. Called the Airbnb of Concerts, Side Door works to help match up artists and hosts for concerts, venues, and more. Now, they have pivoted to online concerts and providing cool things for artists, fans, and hosts. Laura lets us in on what they are doing and how we, too, can thrive in this industry. She discusses as well the different pillars in your music income to help you become a profitable musician. Just because the world is forced into their homes doesn't mean you have to give up performing altogether. You better believe that with online performing, there is a way.

Since the beginning of social distancing, live streaming has been the one major performance opportunity available to artists. We can easily spend all day everyday now tuning in to watch artists of all types. As a result, our industry has simultaneously become flooded with live streaming and confronted with many new challenges. For example, how do you compete for people's attention with so many streams happening? How do you determine the proper price for virtual tickets when your patrons are used to viewing content for free? What type of artist fee should you offer an artist for a virtual concert? Should you use Facebook, YouTube, and/or Instagram to stream the event or are there better platforms out there? How do you make a unique experience for your patrons when you no longer have the ambience of your venue? If you are an artist, how do you make a unique experience for your fans who may be watching your show on a small phone? Lastly, what will all of this look like when live music can finally resume in person? These questions and many more are fundamentally changing how live music is presented and received. While we won’t have time to address everything on today’s webinar, our goal is to share new ideas that address some of these basic challenges. Today you will hear from Laura Simpson, CEO and Co-Founder of Side Door (https://sidedooraccess.com/home). Side Door’s platform marketplace is built to connect artists with curators, venues, service providers and audiences to make booking, ticketing and payments easy, fair and transparent. Next you will hear from Andrew Baranbom, Founder & CEO of First Tube Media (https://www.firsttubemedia.com/), a full-service livestream content platform that makes it turn-key for brands to execute innovative sponsorship programs. Next up will be Eric Essex, Director of Programming at the University of Alabama Birmingham’s prestigious Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center (https://www.alysstephens.org/). Over the years, Eric has booked everyone from Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis and Pat Metheny to Diana Krall, Yo-Yo Ma, Emmylou Harris and Oscar winning actor Al Pacino. Next you will hear from Nicholas Russotto, Director of Music Programming at the 92nd Street Y in New York City (https://www.92y.org/). Finally, you will hear from Emmet Cohen (https://emmetcohen.com/), winner of the 2019 American Pianists Awards and the Cole Porter Fellow of the American Pianists Association. I also want to thank my team member Marie Le Claire who is with us today to ensure things run smoothly. Thank you Marie.
Side Door was created to match artists and hosts for house concerts and alternative venues. They've been called the Airbnb of concerts. I'm a huge fan of house concerts but we cannot do that in this era. What Side Door discovered is they can shift this to online concerts and allowed them to shift to an area they never really thought they could have. Laura Simpson of Side Door will share how musicians are earning income this way.I also share about live streaming on 15 Streams of Income to Tap Right Now. If you haven't yet, you can grab this free resource at femusician.com right on the front page. If you're interested in getting group support within the Academy, you can check out my workshop at musiciansprofitpath.com to see how I set up the Academy and how I run that framework.Starting up as a fan of music, Laura hung around musicians at all-ages clubs. She started by defending musicians to make sure they are getting paid correctly. She eventually did live music photography. She became a journalist for 7 years and after that, she pivoted back to music and worked as a funding officer for a non-profit that helped artists in developing their careers. She also worked in the biggest music market in California where she learned a lot. She was really passionate about doing live music at her own house. She felt that the shows she was able to host at her own house where she helps other musicians earn money was such a beautiful experience. After all that, she put up her first company, The Syrup Factory, which is mainly project management for hire that supports artists in doing their release or putting out a video, etc. Side Door was born out of the idea that Laura wanted to make doing live music a better experience for artists. She saw that her beloved musicians didn't really make that much money on tours so she saw a solution in doing house concerts instead. She had an idea of how to simplify the booking process for house concerts. She met Dan Mangan who was doing a similar thing as she was. They made the business what it is to create a fair and transparent platform for artists. With this platform, the idea was to find the best artists and help them find the best venues like houses, churches, breweries, etc. and Side Door matchmakes both sides. The third part was giving access to the audience. When this pandemic happened, they had a lot of bookings scheduled for the artists and venues so they had to speak with each of them when the bookings were canceled. A week after what happened, Laura and Dan talked about booking shows online. Since then, they've done more than 100 shows and artists' incomes have become triple what they usually had.About Side Door Online Gigs:They have been enjoying Zoom shows for artists since it creates connections with the artists and audiences both being at their own homes, with their kids, and with their dogs. The cap on a Zoom call's capacity creates scarcity for the shows and that makes the shows really special. They put hard tickets on the shows. The average ticket price is between $7 and $8. They have a donate link as well for tipping. Merch can also be sold if the artists prefer. (These items are not currently live. They will be in the coming weeks.) Most people buy more tickets than they need to support their favorite artists. The kinds of fans coming to the shows actually pay for tickets and gift them to others. The average income that an artist takes home for a show is $1600-$1700 a show. They are also currently working on matching with hosts or other people who could contribute to making the show great. Some artists would collaborate with emerging artists. Audiences tend to support emerging artists when they soon have their own virtual show.Side Door responds to support requests if they need to have a conversation with the artist and whoever else is involved pre-show to talk about details such as the date of the show, time of the show, etc. They are also transparent about how much an artist would take home after fees and taxes.Anyone can be a promoter for an artist and that person can earn from this. They are also working on suggestions for similar artists or concerts just like what Spotify does. (This feature is not yet live but in design/development.)Online shows do not replace live shows since it's a different kind of experience. It looks like online shows will stay even after live shows are allowed again.Go to sidedooraccess.com and check out their platform.Links mentioned in this episode: femusician.com, musiciansprofitpath.com, and sidedooraccess.com

What happens when your concert matchmaking platform comes to a screeching halt thanks to social distancing? Side Door co-founder Laura Simpson joins host Dmitri Vietze to talk about how the pandemic's crisis is leading to a new type of ticketed yet intimate performance. Laura talks about how she does not think artists should be forced to play for free, and the types of reactions they are seeing from fans who have bought a ticket. Because they use Zoom for their live streamed concerts from home, she also talks about what it means to be able to see the faces of your fans when you perform; people holding children on their laps, or holding up handwritten signs. Listen in to see how one music tech startup's pivot is unfolding in real time and still creating community and opportunities for performers. She’s now one of the co-founders and the CEO of Side Door, where they have a dream of making things better for touring artists and live music fans. Episode Overview. Side Door Access was started with the welfare of the artists and the fans enjoyment deeply in mind. The business is built on tech to make it easier for artists who are trying to find places to tour and to have better profit margins. When it started, they located venues that are low overhead, including houses, cafes, bookstores, churches and people who want to offer that space for a show. The platform offers a split so that the artist gets the majority of the revenue, and a portion is offered to the host to cover costs and then Side Door takes a typical booking fee. Side Door is building the tech so that they can try to create an almost like a Tinder style match between the host and the artist. Using their preferences, they put in the details and instantly they're going to get back basically a match for a show they could play at the location at this time. it's an automatic contract that's made and the two parties decide what they want to do with that show and they're off to the races. Side Door does all the ticketing, helps with the promotion and, supports them with best practices. One of the founders is a host herself. Laura’s Co-founder is Dan Mangan who is a Juno award-winning artist in Canada and he built his career on doing house concerts and now he's doing huge concerts. They have seen both sides of that process. They wanted to find a way to make it a little bit easier for artists who are constantly struggling to make a living with all their touring. The project is still coming together, and Dan speaks with Mike about that and a lot more. The Man Who Carried Cash: Saul Holiff, Johnny Cash and the Making of an American Icon is a new book by Canadian author and journlist Julie Chadwick that explores the relationship between the oft-troubled country icon and his longtime Canadian manager, who ended their relationship at the pinnacle of Cash's success. The story is truly fascinating and unearths some unknown information about one of the most prominent musicians of all time with a few Canadian twists. Finally, after a successful run with celebrated rock outfit Tupelo Honey, Dan Davidson has embarked on a solo career in the country world - and wasted little time in making a name for himself. After a pair of successful singles, we check in with Davidson to talk about the transition from rock to country, his plans for future releases, and more.
