On Sunday January 1st, 1956 NBC's Monitor broadcast New World Today. 1956 was a Presidential election year. At the time of this broadcast, Dwight Eisenhower, who'd had a heart attack in September, was still debating whether he would run for a second term. He'd decide in February, eventually winning re-election. After the censuring of Senator Joseph McCarthy in 1954, the Red Scare had subsided, overtaken by fear of communism in other parts of the world and general war with Russia. Meanwhile, In January of 1956 Orson Welles appeared with The New York City Center Theater Company playing King Lear. He was finally home again. In February he traveled to Las Vegas where he performed a variety act at the Riviera Hotel. Welles was then contracted by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz to create a TV pilot for Desilu Productions. The short film was written and directed by Orson Welles, based on the short story "Youth from Vienna" by John Collier. Joi Lansing and Rick Jason star as a narcissistic couple faced with an irresistible temptation concocted by a scientist. Welles was the on-screen narrator. It was called The Fountain of Youth and considered a dark comedy. Desi Arnaz conceived the series, proposing to Welles that he host and narrate. Arnaz later wrote that before signing the deal he clarified the finances with Welles: "I am not RKO. This is my 'Babalu' money." Filming took five days in early May. The total cost was nearly fifty-five thousand dollars. Arnaz reported that CBS gave the series a slot, with General Foods as a sponsor, but the challenges in getting Welles to commit to a series lasting more than thirty weeks were daunting. The series did not go to air. The pilot was later broadcast on September 16th, 1958, during NBC's Colgate Theatre. That Spring, the Rock n' Roll era officially arrived. On April 6th, 1956, Elvis Presely signed a three-film deal with Paramount Pictures. By the end of the month, his single, “Heartbreak Hotel” rose to the top of the charts. It would remain there into June. Meanwhile, Orson Welles appeared as himself on October 15th, 1956 in a very famous episode of I Love Lucy. Two days later, he was on the radio for a special one-off program adapting Philip Wylie's 1954 novel about post-nuclear civilization. It was called Tomorrow and syndicated by ABC and the Federal Civil Defense Administration. The next month, on November 13th, 1956, his daughter's first birthday, Welles appeared on NBC Radio's Biography In Sound for his old mentor Alexander Woollcott, who had passed away in 1943.
Cloverleaf Radio's host, "The Host with the Most" Jimmy Falcon welcomes back Comedian/Producer/Actor, Steve Bluestein makes his return to the show for the first time in nearly a decade! Biography via www.stevebluestein.biz: Doing stand up comedy for years, Steve Bluestein has finally come into his own as a playwright. His talent has been honed from years of pounding the boards in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Reno, Tahoe and countless comedy clubs across the nation. In the last few years his career (which includes television, feature films, cable and personal appearances) has taken a new direction. After writing for Norman Lear, he joined the sit com staff of “THIRTEEN EAST” for NBC, then went on to “TOTALLY HIDDEN VIDEO” as a segment producer for Fox TV and “THE NEW CANDID CAMERA” for Universal. Moving behind the scenes, he was production coordinator for SURPRISE GARDENER on HGTV. And rounding out his talents, his design skills were featured when his home was seen on Kitty Bartholomew's YOU'RE HOME (also on HGTV). Most recently, his play WHEN ONE IS GONE won the Chameleon Theater Circle playwrights' award, was also a finalist in the Palm Springs Playwrights' Festival. His play Rest, In Pieces has been optioned for Broadway and most recently had a staged reading in New York City with Olympia Dukakis and Louis Zorich. To add to his list of credits, Steve has been cast in the lead of Sam Bobreck's new play ANNOYANCE, which is in pre-production for a New York City opening. As always, Steve returns to his first love Stand-Up comedy as often as possible. His last tour has taken him from Coast to Coast. Most recently he opened for Lanie Kazan in concert and once again returning to Laughlin, Nevada to the Riverside Casino and The Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. “A strong improviser, it is recommended you not sit up front if you don't want to talk to this fast witted comedian. His stock and trade is his rapid wit and an ability to improvise on any subject at the drop of a hat. See his show over and over again, 80% of the material will be new.” “I have to do it that way”, says the comedian… “otherwise I get too bored to stand on stage!” Bored is something you won't be, Steve is hysterical. Steve Bluestein is a man for all seasons, a comedian for all audiences… he's a must see! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jianetwork/support

[We celebrate eminent North-of-the-border sportswriter Ed Willes' selection to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame's media wing last week - with a June 2018 archive re-release of one our most popular episodes!] As Johnny Manziel's pro football comeback journey wraps up a promising pre-season with the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats, we take a moment this week to reminisce on the approaching 25th anniversary of the CFL's bold, but ultimately ill-fated attempt to bring its exciting brand of pigskin south of the border in 1993. When the NFL put the brakes on its two-year World League of American Football experiment in the summer of 1992 (which included a franchise in Montreal, dubbed the “Machine”), an economically wobbly CFL sensed an opportunity to fill the gap in US markets newly comfortable with the notion of pro football, as well as a potential growth path for the tradition-rich Canadian game to expand outside the Provinces. In fact, two WLAF owners, Fred Anderson (Sacramento Surge) and Larry Benson (San Antonio Riders) "crossed over" to the Canadian League and were awarded newly rechristened franchises for 1993 – Anderson's Sacramento Gold Miners and Benson's San Antonio Texans. While the Gold Miners were the only ones to make it into the following season's expanded CFL schedule (Benson literally – and ominously – left the league at the altar by bowing out the day of the league's press conference announcing the expansion), the door was open to a wild three-season adventure that brought the wide-open Canadian game to far-flung American outposts in Baltimore, Las Vegas, Shreveport, Memphis, Birmingham, and, ironically (via eventual relocation from Sacramento), San Antonio. Longtime Vancouver Province sportswriter Ed Willes (End Zones and Border Wars: The Era of American Expansion in the CFL) joins the podcast to discuss the league's short-lived American expansion effort, which then-commissioner Larry Smith had hoped to eventually encompass ten US teams in a fully expanded 20-team league. Among the misadventures, Willes recounts: the 1995 champion Baltimore Stallions (who operated as the nickname-less “CFLers” the previous season in a trademark dispute with the NFL over the “Colts” moniker); the woefully attended Las Vegas Posse (who practiced on the Strip in the Riviera Hotel's parking lot and were forced to play their last “home” game in Edmonton); the Memphis Mad Dogs' unique approach to fitting the longer/wider CFL field into the Liberty Bowl; why football-mad Birmingham couldn't draw flies for Barracuda games once college and high school seasons started; and the “Great Tucker Caper” – featuring the infamous brothers Glieberman and their attempt to steal away the Shreveport Pirates to the greener pastures of Norfolk, VA.

This was an awesome episode. Matt Kazam joins me in the Huddle this week and it is one of the best times I have had on the show. The hour went by way to fast! I think we needed 3 to discuss everything! You gotta check out Matts website.. https://theylaughyouwin.com Matt is bringing laughter back to the work place. The revolutionary public speaking and humor training program of They Laugh You Win can turn anyone into and extraordinary public speaker. His story about Richard Branson is great and he has worked with many other CEOs who have all seen the value in humor training and teach their employees how to use the tools of stand-up comedy. Matt is a veteran comic who can be seen performing at the nation’s top comedy clubs, casinos and theatres. He has performed stand-up comedy over 6,000 times in 45 states and 7 countries. Matt has also performed at over 1,000 corporate and private events. He has an amazing ability to work any crowd, anywhere, any venue. At the age of 10 Matt saw his first comedy show in Las Vegas at the legendary Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. He knew right then that was what he wanted to do with his life. In 2014 Matt’s boyhood dream was realized and amazingly at the same iconic property where the dream was born, the Riviera. Matt’s one man comedy show, “40 Is Not The New 20,” was an instant success. Becoming a Las Vegas “must see” show month after month. He was the last headliner to perform at the Riviera that saw the likes of Frank Sinatra and Elvis rise to fame. Matt’s energetic style, witty observations and unassuming charm are the driving forces behind his unique and hilarious comedy & learning events. Growing up in New York City, he started performing shows for family and friends at the age of three, but it wasn’t until graduating college from George Mason University with a degree in finance that Matt finally took the plunge as a full-time stand-up comedian. While in DC he also was an on air sports personality talking Skins Football and all things sports in DC. He has made television appearances on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”, Fox’s “Big Red Couch”, Comedy Central’s “Stand-Up Stand-Up”, VH-1’s “Fools For Love”, TLC’s “Two For Vegas”, The Discovery Channel’s “Lux List”, WGN’s “The Bob & Tom Show. He has appeared with Tommy Davidson on the Rascal’s Comedy Club Webcast “Live Caught On The Net”. In addition, Matt’s comedy special,“Stand-Up and Sit-Down with Matt Kazam,” is currently airing on XM Satellite Radio. In addition to these television projects, Matt was a writer for the 2008 “Fox Reality TV Awards” on the Fox Reality Channel. Matt’s 1-man show, “40 Is Not The New 20,” had a residency at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The hilarious show tackles the subject matter both literally and figuratively. The material explores how much the world has changed in the past 40 years. The show is a mid-life celebration of the knowledge and experience that can only be gained with age. The show is like comfort food for the soul. It puts the notion that 40 is the new 20 on trial and breaks down the concept into categories such as technology, the media, politics, relationships, family, our priorities and even how much our bodies have changed over the years. Matt walks the audience through specific and general examples on how the 40 is not the new 20 and more importantly why? All the while, the audience is being thoroughly entertained as well as feeling an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. Everyday topics like marriage, fashion, parenting, work, commuting, bills and exercise, just to name a few, will be compared and contrasted though the eyes of a 40+ year-old taking a look at today’s 20 year-old young adult. New York-based comic Steve Marshall plays all the big clubs across the country. He's been featured on national television platforms such as CBS News and CNBC, plus Hot Off the Grill With Bobby Flay and NBC's Dare to Dream. Riffing relentlessly on topics such as his negative Jewish family and why one should never make fun of Chinese people who work in a Chinese restaurant, Marshall's no-holds-barred approach will have you laughing and gasping in equal doses."THE MARSHALL PLAN - Bad behavior makes for good comedy."That's the way the Florida New Times described Steve's comedy."Marshall's style relies on a sharp mind and a complete inability to properly behave himself. Nothing too controversial, just a little good-old-fashioned honesty."RATED H FOR HONESTY.Steve doesn't behave, he tells the truth. After graduating with a degree in accounting Steve turned down a job with Price Waterhouse to follow his dream and become a comedian. By day he taught accounting, business law , math and psychology at a vocational business school. He told jokes and made accounting fun. His misbehaving got him promoted to Dean.By night he went to open mics and learned to make people laugh. One day he was picking up his dry cleaning and teasing the woman behind the counter, she smiled and said "behave" and Steve found his comedy voice.Steve takes the stage announcing proudly "I'm not here to behave" and proceeds to speak honestly about sex, ethnicity, love, and the lack of respect for women, gays, minorities and even men. That's right, men get disrespected too!The results have been amazing.Steve has appeared on network and cable tv. NBC,CBS, the Food Network have all featured Steve being funny.Steve has been seen cooking and cracking jokes with Bobby flay on Hot Off the Grill and stealing the date on Blind Date. That's right. We told you Steve doesn't behave for laughs. His high energy and broad smile made him a perfect choice to warm up tv audiences for ABC's The View.A strong writer Steve has written monologue jokes for the Late Show With David Letterman and is the head writer for a new dvd coming out called Extreme Comedy.Steve is a recognized film director. He wrote and directed Academy Award Consideree and Long Island Film Festival Winner "Get the Script to Woody Allen". Steve is currently directing "Driving Me Crazy" starring academy award winner Mickey Rooney, and Renee Taylor , Josepy Bologna, and Dick Cavett.Steve is one of the top comedy and acting coaches in America. He has coached Lisa Lampanelli, Lisa Landry, Karith Foster, John Diresta and Tommy Savitt.Recently Steve performed his totally clean comedy act at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City and the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. He got a standing ovation at the Funnybone in West Virginia performing his Double R rated act .Steve also performs a one man show in theaters called "Nobody Told Me". Time Out NY reviewed Steve's show and called it "genuinely funny."Genuine, passionate, honest! This high energy comedian, actor, writer, director, will make you laugh about real life with the fun of a party where no one behaves. hence Don't Behave is my philosophy for finding one's true self. Steve discovered if I broke patterns and paradigms I behaved more naturally.Simply walking to a familiar place in a different route opened my subconscious to spontaneity. The next step or evolvement is transcending.Knowledge becomes the diving board to bounce on and inspire one to dive.On stage I am diving into the unknown, using different approaches as a diving board to propel me.The same in my personal life. The personal becomes the diving board for my stage performance and the stage performance becomes the diving board for my personal life. Therefore on or off the stage I Am Me.

We have spoken to only three non wrestling persons in the history of our show, but all had an involvement in the industry. Chet Coppock, legendary Chicago sportscaster who worked both as a ring announcer for the then WWF and was also the voice of WWF Radio. Evan Ginzburg, one of the producers of the legendary film "The Wrestler", and now tonight, Matt Cimber, the man behind GLOW. While not seen in front of the camera, Matt's presence was indelable inside the room in the Riviera Hotel where GLOW was taped. As we know by our interviews with the GLOW girls, Matt is still loved and respected by them. In addition to GLOW, Matt has an exceptonal résumé that includes numerous off Broadway productions and films and launched careers other than the women we talk about and to, including Oscar winner Sandy Dennis. We will talk to Matt about all the aspects of his career, including not only GLOW but his upcoming return to the wrestling industry with a new show formatted similar to his beloved GLOW. Please note, as we mentioned last night, Matt does have some memory issues so his recollections might be incomplete or he might repeat some stories, please indulge this legendary gentleman as he is honoring us tonight with his presence.

As Johnny Manziel’s pro football comeback journey wraps up a promising pre-season with the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats, we take a moment this week to reminisce on the approaching 25th anniversary of the CFL’s bold, but ultimately ill-fated attempt to bring its exciting brand of pigskin south of the border in 1993. In fact, two WLAF owners, Fred Anderson (Sacramento Surge) and Larry Benson (San Antonio Riders) "crossed over" to the Canadian League and were awarded newly rechristened franchises for 1993 – Anderson’s Sacramento Gold Miners and Benson's San Antonio Texans. While the Gold Miners were the only ones to make it into the following season’s expanded CFL schedule (Benson literally – and ominously – left the league at the altar by bowing out the day of the league’s press conference announcing the expansion), the door was open to a wild three-season adventure that brought the wide-open Canadian game to far-flung American outposts in Baltimore, Las Vegas, Shreveport, Memphis, Birmingham, and, ironically (via eventual relocation from Sacramento), San Antonio. Longtime Vancouver Province sportswriter Ed Willes (End Zones and Border Wars: The Era of American Expansion in the CFL) joins the podcast to discuss the league’s short-lived American expansion effort, which then-commissioner Larry Smith had hoped to eventually encompass ten US teams in a fully expanded 20-team league. Among the misadventures, Willes recounts: the 1995 champion Baltimore Stallions (who operated as the nickname-less “CFLers” the previous season in a trademark dispute with the NFL over the “Colts” moniker); the woefully attended Las Vegas Posse (who practiced on the Strip in the Riviera Hotel’s parking lot and were forced to play their last “home” game in Edmonton); the Memphis Mad Dogs’ unique approach to fitting the longer/wider CFL field into the Liberty Bowl; why football-mad Birmingham couldn’t draw flies for Barracuda games once college and high school seasons started; and the “Great Tucker Caper” – featuring the infamous brothers Glieberman and their attempt to steal away the Shreveport Pirates to the greener pastures of Norfolk, VA.
