We finally made it to Jordan Kahn's Vespertine in Culver City, which reopened after a hiatus in the Spring of 2024, and earned not one but two Michelin Stars just a few months later. If you've heard people talk about VesperVespertineine, then you know that it elicits strong reactions. Some people can't get enough of Chef Kahn's otherworldly creations, with Michelin describing his food as “visually stunning” and “daringly inventive.” Others, however, walk away deeply confounded, scratching their heads like entire world in the wake of the Luka Doncic trade. I believe the Infatuation called it “unpleasant to consume.” But what did Father Sal and I think of the experience? Listen to find out as we walk you through our entire journey in our trademark, frankly psychotic fashion. New Michigan budget could prompt cuts, hard decisions in public schools Chicken Guy in Livonia, the first metro Detroit location for Guy Fieri's chain, to close
I began with Executive Chef Kyle Timpson, who started out with aspirations to be a pastry chef. Sometime after graduating Atlantic Cape Community College, he found that challenging himself within a larger spectrum was appealing, and cultivated a space where he could continue to grow in the industry. Today, Executive Chef Timpson joined us to talk about the delicious steakhouse and beverage menus at SIN in Philadelphia, and what to look forward to in the coming weeks. (https://www.sinphiladelphia.com)I next spoke with Army Veteran, Cookbook Author, three-time Food Network winner and Executive Chef Kevin Cooper aka "Chef Steek." Chef Steek sat down with me to discuss how he began in the culinary world, what influenced his progression within the industry, and what it was like to not only appear on the Food Network, but also win and be able to open the Chicken Guy in King of Prussia. Chef Steek and I also dug into the menu items available at the Chicken Guy, along with some of the milkshakes too--have I mentioned how much of a sweet tooth I have? Well, you'll hear from both of us on what to bite (and sip) at his spot in the KOP Mall. (https://chickenguy.com)My final guest, Executive Chef Alex Tellez, joined Food Farms and Chefs to discuss Sor Ynes and all the delicious offerings on their menu; from scratch made tortillas to mezcal flights--Sor Ynes focuses on traditional Mexican ingredients and techniques to prepare their fresh and piquant menu. I know that I have my eye out on their "Shrimp Al Ajillo" with a mezcal tasting flight, and I'll save some room for dessert! Just keep your eyes peeled on their socials, as they're getting ready to change up the menu soon! Now that's a tasty treat to look forward to! (https://sorynez.com)

Food Network star Guy Fieri made a stop at his Winter Park restaurant Chicken Guy! on Wednesday, announcing a big expansion of the businesses footprint. The mayor of Flavortown had several pieces of business to attend to while making his visit. “I live in Northern California, I also have a house in West Palm Beach — So, I'm going to be spending a lot more time in Florida,” Fieri said. “This (Winter Park location) is the beginning of the growth. We wanted to make sure that we had this thing dialed in and really know all the ins and outs of what we're doing and how we're doing it to make sure that what we're going to give people on a national level was going to be outstanding. But we have 80 franchises that are already ready to go. It's going to go loud and fast.” Florida Foodie co-host Candace Campos was there and got the chance to talk with Fieri and his business partner Robert Earl about the franchise and its future growth. This new season of fresh stories all about personal experiences. Today's story is about chickens. Josh and Marya were looking for a change of pace during the pandemic and they found it by becoming the owners of a few backyard chickens. With the help of a local Chicken Guy, Marya and Josh got set up for success in their new urban farming adventure. Today's story is told in the third person using multiple tenses, including the present, past, and conditional. Important vocabulary in the story includes: “gallinas” (chickens), “gallinero” (chicken coop) “el pollero” (the Chicken Guy), “el jardín” (garden/yard) “alquilar” (to rent), and “poner huevos” (to lay eggs). No matter where you are in your language journey, stories will help you on your way. Let's say your cat gets trapped in the pantry overnight and manages to chew through two bags of cat nip, spread it throughout the pantry and then have a panicked pea on top of a bucket of cashews before knocking over a vase, which smashes to the ground alerting you to the fact that she's been stuck in there all night. Or let's say you're a guy who decides to eat 40 whole chickens for 40 days. You can take those experiences and be . . . something? This episode we look into the chicken man and the cat peeing in the pantry and the scale of positive and negative experiences. SOURCES Diener, E., Wirtz, D., Tov, W., Kim-Prieto, C., Choi. Myf and Zan are back to flick through the week that was and explain WTF happened. A man in Philly has eaten 40 rotisserie chickens in 40 days, there's that. Speaking of birds, Myf has an important update on her beloved Collins St Peregrine Falcons. Meanwhile Twitter's “imminent demise” has a few people switching to the Mastodon social platform, we explain what it is. My very special guest today is Anthony, Tomey. Anthony is a full-time entrepreneur, a former professional baseball player with the Detroit Tigers organization and now truly one of the largest franchise owners of Jimmy John's, The Chicken Guy and also a Real Estate Developer. Additionally, he is the owner of 8 Mile Vodka - a Vodka that took home the awards for Best in Class: Vodka and Best of Class: Overall Vodka at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. I sat down with Anthony to talk about how he transitioned from pitching on the baseball diamond to pitching in the boardroom and hitting home runs every time! Anthony shares how he gets the inspiration to “win at all costs” from his dad. His dad came to the United States, Ellis Island, at 25 years old and with $20.00 in his pocket. Though he didn't speak English, he managed to put himself through college and earned a master's degree, all while working as a busboy at the London Chophouse in Detroit. Anthony's goal from a young age was to earn a full ride scholarship to thank his father who had paid for a private Catholic school education. As a baseball player, Anthony loved the pressure of the game. He was a closer, a last inning pitcher, and thrived in the bases loaded, no one out scenarios. It was the thrill of the competition that motivated him. He also talks about how humbling it was to go from being the #1 pitcher in college to the majors where everyone was on a level playing field with every guy being the #1 player where they came from. Baseball taught him that no matter what happens, you're going to fail. You have to pick yourself up and get back out there. In the spring of 2003, Anthony Tomey was playing baseball at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. His family came to see him play, and after the game they headed to a sub shop down the street. The place had a line of 20 people stretching outside of the door. At first the family took this as a bad sign, but a member of staff told them to stick around. In less than five minutes, their food was in their hands. This was a defining moment, as they all were amazed at the speed and efficiency with which this business operated. Just a few months later, five like-minded Tomey family members, Fawzi, Tony, Anthony, Christine, and Michael, opened a Jimmy John's of their own in Novi, Michigan. In 2003, the Tomey Group LLC was founded as a means to grow a brand the partners loved, and to bring the same expansion to brands throughout the country. As of May 2019, the Tomey Group has bought and opened more than 50 Jimmy John's locations throughout the Detroit Metro area. Anthony is not your average franchise owner. Sitting back and delegating tasks from afar isn't his style. Instead, he is hands-on involved in all aspects of the business, from preparing sandwiches to making deliveries. He is committed to providing employees with what they need and deserve, no matter what that looks like. He knows his employees' names, how they work, and what makes them tick. Just over a year ago, Anthony and his brother had an opportunity to buy a vodka company. 8 Mile Vodka, and an apparel company, Born in Detroit became their next financial endeavor. They currently oversee operations and have had great success, partnering with the Detroit Pistons with both companies, while getting into every Meijer in Michigan with 8 Mile. Additionally, 8 Mile Vodka just recently took home the awards for Best in Class: Vodka and Best of Class: Overall Vodka at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Recently Tomey Group signed a deal to become the newest franchisees of Chicken Guy, a new concept by Guy Fieri. It competes directly with Chick Fil A, and the Tomey Group bought the rights to southeast Michigan. Anthony truly believes that the harder you work, the luckier you get. The opportunities that continue to present themselves to the Tomey group are a direct result of hard work and surrounding themselves with successful people. Success attracts success. The Tomey group continues to grow their empire and have added Real Estate to their growing portfolio. With the recent purchase of a shopping plaza in White Lake MI 3 years ago, 4 apartment complexes throughout SE Detroit and a resort on Houghton Lake, there is no stopping this hard-working entrepreneur! In the latest episode of Hospitality Hangout, Michael Schatzberg “The Restaurant Guy'' and Jimmy Frischling “The Finance Guy'' chat with Robert Earl, Co-Founder of Virtual Dining Concepts and Chairman of Earl Enterprises, to discuss virtual brands, how influencers bring value to operators, and the company's latest concept.Earl talks about growing up in the United Kingdom and how being the son of a very famous singer exposed him early on to show business, talent and brands. Earl jokes that he was reluctant to go into show business or to work at all, but he soon realized that he needed to find something that would benefit his future. He shares that once he discovered hospitality, he decided to study the field at University. When asked about his career path following school, Earl talks about working at two of London's most famous hotels. He shares that he worked in every department, gaining lessons and insights which he says gave him the foundational experiences that he still calls upon to this day. By the age of 22, Earl shares that he was developing a Medieval concept that would become the most successful restaurant in London. Earl's impressive resume includes founding Planet Hollywood, expanding brands, such as Buca di Beppo, and launching new concepts like Chicken Guy!. He says, “I realized that hospitality was for me, and I've had the beauty of working all around the world with every type of level of restaurant food operation, and that makes me who I am now.”They discuss the massive growth in the virtual brands space. Earl predicts that within the next few years, every restaurant will have a virtual brand, and he believes that consumers will not only know about these brands, but they will actively seek them out. He talks about founding Virtual Dining Concepts and how the company is able to help operators increase their revenue streams by utilizing what they already have existing in their restaurants. He says, “When we talk to a restaurant and we identify their equipment, their labor, which corners of the kitchen are quieter than others, what skus do they have, what produce do they have that has a limited shelf life, and with all of that knowledge, as restaurateurs, we come back to those restaurants and say, ‘Boy do we have a brand for you.' “Earl shares what's next for the company and he teases a bit about an upcoming collaboration with TikTok, and talks about why working with influencers and celebrities can bring tremendous value to a restaurant's virtual brands. He shares breaking news about a new concept launching, Steve Harvey's Family Food, which will feature a menu of both healthy and indulgent recipes, as well as a signature drink developed with the restaurant's namesake. Earl shares the exciting news about a mega, multi-concept opening the heart of New York City. The four story concept will included Planet Hollywood, Chicken Guy!, and an entire floor of constantly changing brands, completely dedicated to curbside pick-up, to-go and third party delivery partners. To hear Earl share more about virtual brands, the company's new aggregated app and his take on where the hottest restaurants are opening, tune into this episode of Hospitality Hangout on Spotify. This syndicated content is brought to you by Branded Strategic Hospitality.

A Brief History of Reel Rap Shane and Bennett started Reel Rap in the summer of 2017. Bennett became a professional podcaster and a “Chicken Guy” at the local supermarket on the same day. In Boston, Shane was growing mushrooms in his apartment and was oft mistaken for a mentally ill escapee of the local hospital, moonlighting as a barback at an upscale hotel bar.Reel Rap has its origins in the middlebrow fare that most filmgoers have forgotten. Bennett and Shane have shared formative film experiences, but they haven’t centered on blockbusters and big hits. On the big screen (the Silver), the boys have paid to see slop like The Descendants and nodded politely side by side. On the small screen (the silver), they’ve idly yipped and hollered through all manner of would-be Oscar bait and mid-budget action movies. The first season found the boys working in familiar middlebrow territory. A fascination with How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) led to their snout-to-tail look at the career of Ron Howard and stretched over more than a year. After focusing on Hollywood’s nicest guy, they pivoted with a season on one of its absolute worst. Mel Gibson provided the perfect opportunity to settle on a theme. After all, he represents the actor-turned-director at their most grandiose. Actors-turned-directors (more on them below) have provided Reel Rap with opportunities to discuss some of Hollywood’s biggest Ls as well as their own personal shortcomings. They’ve also discussed some of the great works of American independent cinema, some foreign gems, and even the rare transcendent Hollywood effort. To recap, here’s where the boys have tracked their mud-soaked galoshes: Season 1: Screwball Right Down the Middle of the Plate: The Films of Ron HowardSeason 2: God’s Angry, Racist Man: Mel Gibson the DirectorSeason 3: Cassavetes v. CassavetesSeason 4: A Chip on His Shoulder and a Song in His Heart: Jon Favreau’s HollywoodSeason 5: A Rich Diet: Sofia Coppola’s Substantive StyleSeason 6: Nichols & May & Reel & Rap Season 7: Pardon My French! It’s the Complete Works of Jacques Tati! That’s not including one-offs, holiday specials, and other miscellaneous episodes.Today, Shane rarely watches movies and Bennett only watches movies. It’s a match made in hog heaven. They’ve covered good movies (Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One, A Star is Born, the works of John Cassavetes and Sofia Coppola), they’ve covered bad movies (The Grinch, The Dilemma, the works of Nick Cassavetes), but mostly they’ve covered anonymous movies. Some of the best episodes of Reel Rap episodes focus on movies that no one has thought about — let alone discussed at length — in years or decades. Subscribing to Reel Rap is an opportunity to hear the definitive conversations on films like Ransom, Charlie Wilson’s War, and The Man Without a Face. Hit the button above to hear the latest episode of Reel Rap. Reel heads gorge themselves at this buffet like a pig at the trough. It’s all slops, in a good way. If you miss getting pretzel nuggets before a 10:00AM matinee, you might be a Reel Head. If you’ve got Criterion discs behind lock and key, you might be a Reel Head. If your neckbeard has a neckbeard, you might be a Reel Head.Reel Head Viewing ListWhat are a Reel Head’s favorite flicks? Buddy, I’m glad you asked. Excluding the films they’ve covered on-mic, here are just a few that the boys would recommend to any would-be Reel Head: Archipelago (Joanna Hogg, 2010)Certain Women (Kelly Reichardt, 2016) Miami Vice (Michael Mann, 2006)Monterey Pop (D.A. Pennebaker, 1968)Ordet (Carl Theodore Dreyer, 1955) Safe (Todd Haynes, 1995)Sherman’s March (Ross McElwee, 1985)Sink or Swim (Su Friedrich, 1990)Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade, 2016)Maidstone (Norman Mailer, 1970)Why Actors-Turned-Directors?No character in Hollywood is more interesting than the actor who decides to direct. For some, the career change comes when roles dry up. For many others, however, it’s not a retreat but a bold, even hubristic, step in a new direction. If you’ll forgive me, I think Reel Rap’s own co-host Bennett said it best:The beret and jodhpurs confer entry into a new, higher sphere, the Pantheon of Keaton and Chaplin. The role of director validates the actor’s every pretension and, for many, provides an opportunity to affirm (or, more often, reaffirm) for the entire world just how hot and multi-talented they are.Did Bradley Cooper have to lower his voice, learn an instrument, and write his own songs to make A Star is Born? Of course he did, for the same reason he had to open a scene with a shot of his own bare ass. He’s an actor-turned-director and that’s what they do. 3 Reasons to Subscribe to Reel Rap The hosts have a genuine rapport: Bennett and Shane met in a high school gym class. Their relationship was incubated in a world of towel slinging and ass slaps. It began in earnest years later, feeding on new insecurities and giving birth to bit after bit. Listening to Reel Rap is like watching a blind-drunk Jackson Pollock at work, or like living inside the moment where Rip Torn swung a hammer at Norman Mailer for an hour or so every week. Shane and Bennett meld the high and low: Reel Rap Season 3 juxtaposed the transcendent films of John Cassavetes with the work of his beefy son Nick. John’s work practically invented American independent cinema as we know it, Nick’s is a strange blend of the maudlin and the hyper-masculine. The episodes covering both directors provide a picture of Reel Rap in microcosm, it’s a mix of high and low, a show with its nose pointed toward the trough and its eyes pointed toward the stars. Reel Rap’s hosts are a lot like Shrek. They wear crappy little vests and they’ve got layers. You’ll get into heaven: Shane promised indulgences duringReel Rap’s episode on The Da Vinci Code. That wasn’t some empty cash grab. Subscribing to Reel Rap’s Patreon at the $10/month level will earn you an indulgence and a spot behind those Pearly-ass Gates.Meet the HostsShane is an actor and writer living in Austin, Texas. He does 99.9% of Reel Rap’s behind-the-scenes work. At 12, he chopped his toe off with an axe while splitting wood barefoot at his home in Yardley, Pennsylvania. His first book of poetry Sliding into First is slated for release in January 2022. His influences include Norman Mailer, Francis Scott Key and Marianne Moore.Bennett coined the phrase “my man” and is an authority, perhaps the preeminent one, on “shitboy cinema.” He once swallowed over a pound of sunflower seed shells in one sitting. It required two surgeries over four days to remove them and, even still, he had to pass a bunch of shells the old-fashioned way for several days afterward. His favorite directors include Terence Davies, Joanna Hogg, and Tobe Hooper. How to Become a Reel Head Want to realize your lifelong dreams of becoming a reel head? You’re in luck, it’s easy!1. The Story of the Szechuan Chicken Guy. This is the more in depth story I shared with friends a few nights ago. I’m not a fan of spicy food and this could be why
I had a fantastic chat with Amanda who vacationed to Walt Disney World in September with her husband and her brother. We discussed a lot of details, especially around the free dining promotion and the Disney Dining Plan. She also gave a great review of Saratoga Springs, so we talked a lot about that lesser-known resort, which I think is really helpful. We dove into Food and Wine Festival just a little bit and Amanda shares her FastPass+ strategies. Just wait until you hear the most FastPasses she has ever gotten in one day. Get ready. Is Disney World just for kids? So many people ask, can I go as an adult (without kids) or is that weird? A lot of people think that Disney World is just for kids and Amanda's brother was one of those people. He thought that Walt Disney World was just a place for kids and he wasn't going to enjoy it, but it really is just somewhere that you can go and relax and enjoy yourself. They've truly got something for everyone. It's fantastic. Resort Review: Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa Two-bedroom Villa, DVC (Disney Vacation Club) (I highly recommend Shipt or Amazon Prime Now for grocery delivery to the Disney World resorts.) Disney Springs Trip Planning Details Park Hopper: Yes Memory Maker: Yes Make sure you ask for Magic Shots! Disney Dining Plan: Yes Dining reservations: Chef Art Smith's Homecomin' in Disney Springs. Yak and Yeti in Animal Kingdom. Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant in Hollywood Studios. Rose & Crown Dining Room in Epcot. Also, many Walt Disney World restaurants are available on Open Table. If you can't get a reservation on My Disney Experience, check Open Table! FastPass+ Strategy: This was the first time Amanda has vacationed to Hollywood studios since Toy Story Land opened, so Slinky Dog Dash and Alien Swirling Saucers were first on her list. She was up 7:00 AM EST, 60 days out because she was staying on property. Favorite time of year in Walt Disney World: Food and Wine Festival time. The Itinerary: 9/2 - 9/8 Day 1: Animal Kingdom & Epcot Breakfast at the hotel FastPasses for Kali River Rapids, UP! A Great Bird Adventure, and Dinosaur Late lunch reservations for Yak and Yeti Epcot: Stroll around the Food and Wine Festival Day 2: Magic Kingdom FastPasses for Peter Pan's Flight, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (all before 12) 2:30 pm lunch at The Plaza Restaurant: This was Amanda's first time dining there, and she absolutely loved it. Day 3: Disney Springs, Animal Kingdom & Magic Kingdom Lunch at Chef Art Smith's Homecomin' FastPasses for Flight of Passage, Kali River Rapids, and Expedition Everest Fireworks Dessert Party at Tomorrowland Terrace Happily Ever After Dessert Party Day 4: Hollywood Studios FastPasses: Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith (11:00 to 12:00), Slinky Dog Dash (5:00 to 6:00), Tower of Terror (7:30 to 8:30) Late lunch at Sci-Fi Dine-in Theater Restaurant Day 5: Epcot Food and Wine Festival: Favorite dish: Charcuterie in a Cone (Amanda's husband's favorite!) FastPasses: Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival, Soarin', and Living with the Land 12:00 pm lunch reservations at Rose and Crown Pub and Dining Room Day 6: Hollywood Studios FastPasses: Star Tours, Slinky Dog Dash, and Tower of Terror Woody's Lunch Box Day 7: Disney Springs and Resort pools Chicken Guy! and The Daily Poutine (one of Amanda's all-time favorites!) Swimming at the Disney resorts Tip: Your Magic Band will give you access to your hotel until midnight the day you check out. They really want you to enjoy everything until the last minute that you have to go. Amanda’s FAVORITE RESTAURANT: QUICK SERVICE AND TABLE SERVICE Quick Service: The Daily Poutine, Friars Nook, and Woody's Lunch Box Table Service: Ohana for breakfast, Crystal Palace, and Rose and Crown Amanda's Favorite Vacation Memory The fireworks dessert party at Magic Kingdom! Getting Wiggy With It! Season 6 Episode 10 (recorded 8/1/2018) brings us a battle of the WIGS! That's right all our wonderful Patrons (Become a WIGS member) do battle on the Hub! Our panelists are WDWNT Mega Fans: Courtney Bruch, Doug Rosenthal, Elijah Maguire and Daniel Harwell. This week we took a long hard look at the upcoming (at the time) Food and Wine Festival. We touch on the disappearance of the Monte Cristo from Toy Story Land as well as the sauces at Chicken Guy. Here on the hub we let you know: Food rocks! Hosted by Patrick Hackett, Around the Hub is a show loosely themed after ESPN's Around the Horn, where four panelists battle it out for points in the sport of competitive Disney banter. We bring on 4 panelists, give them a bunch of news topics from around the Disney company, and judge them on whose opinions are best. Points are awarded for well thought out ideas and deducted at the whim of the host. Around The Hub has run for 5 seasons and Season 6 premiered live during our Toys for Tots marathon. We will be featuring panelists from around the WDWNT team talking about all the latest Disney news. Around the Hub is broadcast live every two weeks at WDWNTunes.com, and then released on the Around the Hub podcast feed sometime afterward.

This weeks episode brings us: CHICKEN GUY and so called Magic Panels. Season 6 Episode 9 was recorded on 6/20/2018. If features Alison Shih, Ashley Jasmer, Theresa Myers and Kyle Forbes. In addition to dissecting the Chicken Guy announcement our panelists take on new floats for Paint The Night, the new head of Pixar and Duffy the Bear getting a new friend. In our final round our two panelists will pitch us a new film in the Star Wars universe.
