Welcome Robyn Scott to Purposely, where she shares her organization's mission and her career and life journey focused on purpose. Robyn serves as the Executive Director of J R McKenzie Trust, a grant-making foundation established by retailer John McKenzie. John, hailing from Australia, first visited New Zealand in 1909 during a motorcycling holiday. Enchanted by the country's charm and its promise of opportunity, he made the bold decision to relocate his business. His inaugural store in Dunedin marked the genesis of his vision. Driven by the belief that a business should reciprocate its success with those integral to its prosperity, John swiftly founded the J R McKenzie Trust in 1940. Initially, the Trust extended its support to disabled servicemen, the Plunket Society, and children in need. Fast forward to the present day, the Trust, functioning as a private family foundation with an annual donation of approximately $4 million, remains steadfastly dedicated to social justice. It endeavors to foster a fair and inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand while bolstering charities, 'for purpose' entities, and community-based organizations in effecting positive change. The sustenance of the trust's funding stems from yearly dividends received from Rangatira Investments, a venture established by John McKenzie, renowned for its pioneering contributions to private investment in New Zealand. Robyn's illustrious career spans over two decades across various sectors, including government, charity, and philanthropy. Her inaugural foray into leadership manifested as the CEO of Fertility New Zealand, a six-year tenure motivated by her personal struggles with infertility. Throughout her stewardship, Robyn spearheaded campaigns advocating for enhanced public funding for fertility treatment and broader access to support services. Subsequently, Robyn assumed the helm of New Zealand's premier philanthropic institution for nearly a decade, playing an instrumental role in consolidating philanthropy as a formidable and impactful movement in Aotearoa. Philanthropy New Zealand, established in 1990 by the late Sir Roy McKenzie to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the J R McKenzie Trust, serves as a testament to the enduring legacy now overseen by Robyn. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

Today we’re talking to Robyn Scott, co-founder and CEO of Apolitical, a global learning network for public servants. The Apolitical Academy, Apolitical’s non-profit arm, helps young and traditionally excluded people run for political office. Previously, Robyn co-founded OneLeap, an executive education company, and two southern African non-profits teaching coding and entrepreneurial skills to vulnerable youth, women, and prisoners. She has written a critically acclaimed memoir about growing up in Botswana. She has also worked for the Financial Times. She is an ambassador for the Access to Medicine Index, an advisor to the Responsible Mining Index, a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, and a Gates Cambridge Scholar. She has a BSc in Bioinformatics from Auckland University and a Masters in Bioscience Enterprise from Cambridge University. The team at Apolitical works passionately towards “fixing” the Democracy Flywheel on three levels: making politics a credible and trustworthy path, making the narrative around governments and civil servants one of talent and pride rather than “necessary evil”, and reviving interest among citizens in a democracy based on free-flowing and accurate information, where democracy is not “traded in” in return of quick fixes. In our conversation, we talk about how Apolitical is working to facilitate peer learning among civil servants, creating a go-to marketplace for new ideas and innovations. Beyond that, we also explore emerging aggregation possibilities in the space of government platforms such as the potential to aggregate private sector suppliers to let the best emerge across the space. We also talk about current tensions between the imagined “global village”, a trend of fragmentation and localism, and the fact that we won’t find all solutions in any of these extremes. A very thought-worthy conversation about a sector that arguably has to yet reap all the benefits in a platforms and ecosystems world. In this episode we celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas together with a mix of old and new. Thanksgiving — that All-American holiday of festive foods married with historical debates — get a look through the lens of pandemic past. We explore the Thanksgiving of 1918 and how it was the same and how it was different. This conversation comes as a backdrop to modern-day calls to abolish Thanksgiving by The New York Times and The Atlantic. While we agree some liberties have been taken with the history of Thanksgiving we have to take a real-world look at what Puritans and Native Americans really have to do with the Thanksgiving we really celebrate. But highlighting this episode even more is the fact that Thanksgiving, as always, sets the Christmas stage and helps build the delicious anticipation we all get in Santa Claus. Our merry little Thanksgiving Gobble Contest has yielded some festive results that we shared include the laughter of my 5 year old grandson who grabbed the microphone to tell me a Christmas tale that happened in my home just last Christmas. Mind you, I’ve never heard this story before — and it is, as all Santa stories are — a legendary thing. And that led to the debut of our first edition of our reading of A Visit from St. Nicholas – the Merry Forums sponsored event we call the Twas the Night Before Christmas Read-a-thon. This is an activity we have talked about for years that we have finally made a reality. And it is a little production sure to produce a smile and loads of Christmas spirit. We also share some more new music. A new song from Robyn Scott titled I Saw Santa Last Night brings a party feel to this episode. Sustainable Development Goal 12 calls for responsible production and consumption. As co-host Claudia Romo Edelman points out in this episode, that does not sound as dramatic as ending poverty or educating everyone, but it may be just as important. There is a disparity of consumption between the Global North and South. SDG 12 is the only goal that specifically calls on rich nations to lead. In our interview with Jared Diamond, he says that one American consumes as much as 32 Kenyans. Diamond, UCLA professor and author of the new book, Upheaval: Turning Points for Nation’s in Crisis, says this inequality is unsustainable as citizens of poorer countries demand better lives. The only sustainable world, he says, is a more equal world. Our most dangerous overconsumption is energy from fossil fuels. Co-host Edie Lush reports on a Financial Times chart which shows only a small percentage of the worlds largest corporations on track to reduce their carbon emissions enough to meet the goals of the Paris Climate accord. Fuel consumption continues to increase and therefore carbon emissions increase. According to the oil major, BP, renewables and natural gas are the fastest growing energy sources , yet in 2018 carbon emissions grew at their highest rate for 7 years at 2.0%. “We use more resources and we are having a heavy footprint which is affecting the biosphere and affecting the climate” says Author and Royal Astronomer Sir Martin Rees, author of On The Future and other books. We need to invest now to protect our children and grandchildren from climate risk, Lord Martin explains, and spending decisions can’t be judged with the same financial tools, such as the discount rate, used to measure the value of traditional investments. Once again we describe the interconnections of the SDGs. Achieving goal 12, Claudia explains, is connected to achieving goal 13, action to control climate change and The Ceo of our partner, APolitical, Robyn Scott, points out that educating women and girls is on the list of important actions to curb climate change. She offers Facts and Actions. Claudia and Edie give a shout out to a listener from Pittsburgh, Jason Hallmark. He is on a journey of a lifetime to learn about sustainability in the Arctic and we are very proud to have helped inspire him in a new chapter of his life. Two executives from our sponsor, MasterCard, describe financial tools that can improve lives.
