I am so excited that today we are joined by a true trailblazer, Rose Ayling-Ellis who I have wanted to have on the podcast for ages and trust me this conversation was worth the wait!  Rose has achieved so many firsts: she is the first deaf person to win ‘Strictly Come Dancing' which even won her a BAFTA, the first deaf person to host live sports coverage on British TV as a presenter for the 2024 Paralympics, and the first deaf actor to be nominated for an Olivier Award for her performance in ‘As You Like It'.  And now after acting for 13 years she has landed her first lead role in ITV's gripping new TV drama, ‘Code of Silence' which follows her character Alison who is plucked from working in the police station canteen and recrutied to lip read for the police on a dangerous case. Plot spoiler: it's INCREDIBLE!  In this episode we talk about the hurdles and prejudice Rose has had to overcome to pursue the career she's dreamed of, the lessons she's learned from resilience and the pressure that comes from being a trailblazer.  We also chat about the mental health problems in the deaf community which we all need to pay more attention to and how we can all make space for oneanother to become a truly inclusive society.  If you love this conversation as much as I do, get in touch with me across socials @joshsmithhosts as I always love hearing from you. I'll see you next week for another episode of ‘Reign'. Love, Josh x P.S The power of conversation is so important and asking for help instead of trying to face stuff alone can be SO empowering. As September dawns, it marks a significant juncture in our annual journey. For many, it signals the return to familiar routines - students head back to school, and governments reconvene after their summer recess. More broadly, it signifies the commencement of the year's final leg. As we embark on the final third of the year, we find ourselves at a prime juncture to set our intentions and establish goals for the jfour months ahead. A great deal can be accomplished with thoughtful consideration in this timeframe. However, a hasty approach may lead to an initial burst of activity followed by disillusionment due to impractical expectations. It's crucial not to underestimate what can be achieved in the medium to long term, even if it means foregoing short-term idealism. In this episode of the Effective Challenge Podcast I take a look at some lesson we can draw from the BBC show, 'Strictly Come Dancing' In tandem with September's arrival, millions eagerly anticipate the return of the BBC series. This event elicits excitement and joy in some, while others greet it with a familiar sigh. 'Strictly' extends its vibrant spectacle until the holiday season, serving as a shining example of what can be achieved in the year's concluding phase. For the uninitiated, 'Strictly Come Dancing' is a beloved British television dance competition that pairs celebrities with seasoned professional dancers, challenging them to perform a variety of dance styles with the aim of clinching the coveted glitterball trophy. Weekly, their performances are assessed by a panel of experts and determined by viewer votes, culminating in the elimination of the lowest-scoring contestant. In the U.S., the show is known as 'Dancing with the Stars.' In pondering the final third of 2023, what insights might we glean from prior seasons of 'Strictly'? The podcast looks at five lessons: 1. You need clarity and focus to achieve what you want 3. 3. You can't achieve things alone 4. Managing to do things when it gets uncomfortable 5. It's possible to challenge and change perceptions 6. Who knows what the next four months could be a springboard to Link to the Rose Ayling Ellis dance discussed in the podcast that so powerfully demonstrates the impact she had on millions of people as part of her competition-winning dance routine as a deaf person https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QejOzrlovTQ If you have comments, questions or observations please drop me a mail - damian@effectivechallenge.com or connect on social media Instagram https://www.instagram.com/damian_effective_challenge/ and LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/damian-piper/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/effective-challenge/message

2023.05.14 – 0864 – Don't Forget Your Ears EarsYou need to know what you sound like so you can adjust your voice or your mic, and make some sometimes subtle changes in pitch or timbre. You may be asked to imitate a certain style of voice or personality, so attuned ears will help you hear, interpret and reproduce the subtleties. And of course, you need to clearly hear instructions from a director or producer, either through a talkback speaker or an earpiece. It is possible to act without full hearing[1], but, as with your eyes, things will be much easier for you if you look after and possibly enhance what you have already got:· Avoid loud music in bars, sports events and concerts … and headphones· Avoid pushing things like cotton buds into your ear canal· Invest in some good headphones and speakers. The ability to hear yourself clearly and accurately will help reduce vocal strain. Ensure that the volume is not too high. · Adjusting your acoustic environment will avoid sound reflection and enhance your recording experience, help you hear more accurately and maintain your vocal health. We have looked before at how, how you hear yourself is different from how others hear you, and the reasons behind this (episode 595). Here's a fun exercise: plug your ears when speaking. This will help you experience your own voice intensified through increased internal resonance as you won't be able to hear your own voice with your ears at all. What do you do instinctively? Perhaps you lower the intensity of your voice, which will also have the effect of reducing the strain on your vocal folds. [1] The brilliant BBC actress and dancer Rose Ayling-Ellis is testament to that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_Ayling-Ellis#:~:text=Rose%20Lucinda%20Ayling%2DEllis%20(born,EastEnders%20(2020%E2%80%932022). Deepa Shastri, an actress, sign song performer and British Sign Language consultant. Deepa explores how Deaf culture and sign language being represented in the arts is so important to the deaf community but also how the arts and sign language naturally go hand in hand - due to the visual and expressive nature of sign language. Back in the 80s, when Marlee Matlin became the first deaf Oscar winner for her performance in 'Children of a Lesser God', things were about to become very exciting for the deaf arts. Fast forward a few decades, Deepa shares how we are now entering a new era where deaf people are being represented on screen and on stage with the likes of Rose Ayling-Ellis picking up the Glitterball, Sophie Stone appearing in Dr. Who and Nadeem Islam making waves on series such as ITV's 'The Bay'. Theatre companies such as Deafinitely Theatre were and continue to be the breeding ground of deaf talent. Within the context of exploring Deafinitely Theatre's work, Deepa explores the complex process of translating Shakespeare plays to British Sign Language and how BSL has its limitations; we do not have signs for every word that exists in the English Dictionary which makes translation difficult. Still, the positives outweigh the limitations. Sign language is very poetic which bodes well for Shakespeare plays in sign language. Deepa concludes that she believes we're entering the golden age for deaf performers as sign language and deaf performers are appearing on all platforms to show the beauty of sign language and how it elevate a performance or a production. Giovanni Pernice glides into the Dish kitchen for a meal with Nick and Angela. The dancer and choreographer has been a professional on Strictly for seven years and took home the title and trophy with his partner Rose Ayling-Ellis in 2021. Fun fact: Giovanni holds the Guinness World Record for jive, kicks and flicks! He is currently on tour with his TV dad / big brother Anton Du Beke. Born in Italy in 1990, he celebrates Arancini Day (13th December) every year and proudly professes to making a mean cup of tea – which he only learnt how to do last year! Angela prepares a trio of carbs, whilst Nick lightens the load with an apple and elderflower spritz. Giovanni talks Sicily, Strictly, sign language and scarpetta. Katie's back with a new series of Just The Tonic, the podcast that shines a light on the positive power of the arts. In series one, we looked at how music can help mental and physical well-being and in this series, we'll explore the benefits of getting involved in other arts forms too. For this episode, Katie's stepping back into the fabulous world of dance - she was in the Strictly final with Anton du Beke! Last year, Eastenders actress Rose Ayling-Ellis was the first deaf contestant to take part and, with her professional dance partner Giovanni Pernice, she waltzed her way from Walford to the Strictly crown. Rose did so much to break down the stereotype that deaf people can't dance and can't enjoy music and that's exactly what dancers Billy Read and Sarah from Critical Mass want to do.  We hear from Billy about his Forbidden Identity performance at Birmingham's International Dance Festival which explores growing up as a Deaf child in a hearing world. Sarah talks about the huge benefits she gets from dancing with Critical Mass, an inclusive dance participation project bringing together young people from across the West Midlands with and without disabilities. And Katie chats to Cuban dance legend Carlos Acosta about his extraordinary life and his plans for the future as Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet. Plus we get a sneak peak of their fantastic show at the Birmingham International Dance Festival! We'll be following The People's Orchestra as they prepare for their performances at the Birmingham 2022 festival in the run-up to the Commonwealth Game and Chief Executive Sarah Marshall tells Katie what they have in store.https://thepeoplesorchestra.com/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. This week is Deaf Awareness Week, so we welcome Eastenders actor and 2021 Strictly Come Dancing champion Rose Ayling Ellis to Changes, our first deaf guest. Rose has been deaf since birth and is a British Sign Language user, recently backing the campaign to make it a recognised language in England. This year, Rose received the Visionary Honours Award for Inspirational Person of the Year whilst her appearance on Strictly last year has significantly helped in changing people's perceptions of deaf people and given confidence to the deaf community. Her Couple's Choice dance with her dance partner Giovanni Pernice featured a period of silence as a tribute to the deaf community and became an award winning TV Moment of the Year. Since her appearance on Strictly there has been a 4000 per cent increase in uptake of British Sign Language classes! Rose creates change just by being present, showing what she is capable of and breaking down barriers. She boldly seeks to change perceptions and the law to make life fairer for the deaf community. She's also irresistibly charming. We are delighted to say that Changes is now an accessible podcast for deaf people. The People's Orchestra open their doors to anyone in the West Midlands who wants play in their orchestras or sing in their show choirs. Being inclusive is part of their DNA.  There are around 11 million people with a disability in the UK - that's over a fifth of the population - but they are hugely under-represented in the music industry and in music education. So, are we ignoring many talented musicians who don't fit the standard mould? Disabled musicians face challenges like finding and buying the right instrument, accessing lessons and finding opportunities to perform. There are still concert halls in the UK where a musician in a wheelchair can't access the stage. Strictly Come Dancing's first deaf contestant, actor Rose Ayling-Ellis is changing perceptions around deaf performers and British Sign Language.  How can we make the music industry a more level playing field for disabled musicians?  Katie finds out when she chats to Klara Filip from The People's Orchestra; Andy Sandham founder member of The People's Orchestra and music teacher in Birmingham; and acclaimed musician and conductor, Charles Hazlewood, founder of Paraorchestra, the world's first fully integrated orchestra of professional disabled and non-disabled musicians. https://thepeoplesorchestra.com/ https://paraorchestra.com/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Hey there my wise friends, and welcome to episode 44 of Collective Wisdom, which is all about leading with empathy. And as if by magic, there was one of the most beautiful examples of doing just that. This weekend,  I was watching one of my favourite TV shows 'Strictly Come Dancing'.  'Strictly' has evolved over the years into something that's more than just a dance competition. Behind all the spray tans and the fabulous costumes. It's really about showing people that if you put in the hard work and face your fears that you're always capable of far more than you often believe. This week, all our hearts were completely won over by Rose Ayling-Ellis and her partner Giovanni Pernice. Rose is the first deaf contestant on the show and has had us all completely in awe with the way that she is nevertheless able to respond to the beat in the music that she can actually feel. So in their dance this week, there was a moment where they cut the music, and we all had just a tiny glimpse into roses world. Not only was the dance itself breathtaking, but it gave us all a chance to experience true empathy. There was no pity here for a woman who can't hear, but instead a whole new level of understanding of what it means to be deaf. It was radical empathy that called my guest today to do the work that she's currently doing in Nepal. Michelle Welsch not only founded a social enterprise, The Learning House, which helps so many young people in Nepal get access to the education that allows them to really lean into their brightest fullest potential as humans, but she's done this without the backing of a team or resources to help her. It's grit and tenacity, empathy, and a beautiful vision of what's possible if you keep going that have been the driving force behind her work. Michelle's positivity and energy are infectious. And I'm just so thrilled she's here to join me to share her story.   Michelle Welsch, MSW www.michellewelsch.com - about me www.learninghousenepal.com - my education center in Nepal Tweet me @redheadlefthand   Watch Giovanni and Rose on Strictly Come Dancing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QejOzrlovTQ   Song ‘Lucky' by Russ Wisdom ‘Leap and the net will appear' and ‘Find your tribe'

In Programme 8 of the current series of Strictly Come Dancing, Rose Ayling-Ellis, the programme's first deaf contestant, did something very powerful. Midway through the routine, the music fell silent… and Rose and Giovanni continued dancing as though along to the music. In this beautiful moment, Rose gave her audience an insight into what she experiences when she dances. In this episode Rob explores ways charities can create their own powerful ‘aha' moments. When you meet donors and potential partners, or when you organise events, how can you (appropriately) create these moments? To give you some ideas, Rob shares examples of three different charities doing this successfully, as well as some fascinating research into how story-telling enhances results. If you'd like to get in touch or share this episode with other charities, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! You can find Rob on Linked In or on twitter I am @woods_rob. Last weekend Rose Ayling-Ellis and her partner Giovanni Pernice danced part of their routine on Strictly with a silent section in tribute to the deaf community. Rose thanked her partner by saying "I feel very thankful for your determination to make this dance the most positive, happy dance, it can be, because you know that being deaf, there's nothing wrong, it's such a joy to be deaf". Rose, who normally stars in Eastenders, is one of many female deaf actors to grace our screens. Sophie Leigh Stone was the first deaf actress to win a place at RADA and to take part in Doctor Who. Gabriella Leon plays Jade Lovall in Casualty. Even Eternals - the latest Marvel movie - stars Lauren Ridloff as the deaf superhero Makkari. So what effect is this increased visibility of deaf women having on the deaf community? Emma is joined by Camilla Arnold, a friend of Rose Ayling-Ellis and the BBC's first deaf series producer and Teresa Waldron, the managing director of Deaf-initely Women, a charity supporting deaf women in Derby. Former netball England International and England head coach Tracey Neville MBE is supporting a new campaign - ‘Coach the Coaches' - to encourage young women from deprived areas to use sport to help improve their metal health AND their career opportunities. The campaign aims to give 16-24 year olds the skills needed to become coaches. We ask the Former England Netball head coach why she wanted to support the campaign. The Bank of England has warned against women working from home and that not returning to the office will result in ‘two track' career development. We discuss this with the Resolution Foundation's Research Director Lindsay Judge and Emma Stewart MBE, Co-Founder of Timewise, a flexible working consultancy. Angela Merkel is stepping down as German chancellor after 16 years in power, bringing to an end a political career that has spanned more than three decades. Back in 1991, when Angela was Minister for Women, the photographer Herlinde Koelbl began a study called ‘Traces of Power', using Angela as one of her photographic subjects. This event took place across a thirty year period, and the results are now displayed in a new book ‘Angela Merkel: Portraits 1991-2021'. Eating Well with Dementia is a new community written recipe book from West Yorkshire. Inspired by the work of their local dementia cafe and cooking group, the book was developed by Young Dementia Leeds, a community service supporting people living with early onset dementia and their families. Emma Barnett speaks to Liz Menacer, Service Manager at Young Dementia Leeds and Diana Harris-Smith whose late husband was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2016. They explore the role of food, memory and dementia.
