In this captivating episode, we had the pleasure of chatting with acclaimed author Angie Cruz about her delightful new children's book, Angelica and La Guira. Angie shared the inspiring story behind her book, which follows a young girl named Angelica who receives a special family heirloom - an instrument called the La guira - from her grandfather in the Dominican Republic.  Angie passionately described the unique La guira instrument, a tin can-like percussion tool with a cheese grater-esque surface, played with a metal comb. She explained how the La guira is deeply rooted in Latin American culture, and how incorporating it into her book was a way for Angie to celebrate her Dominican heritage and share it with young readers. Angie also discussed the importance of representation in children's literature, and how she was driven to create a story that would resonate with Latin kids and families. She beautifully captured the themes of family, community, and the power of music to bring people together, even when faced with challenges. Transitioning to our conversation with educator Zeba McGibbon, we explored the critical role of social-emotional learning in early childhood development. Zeba shared insights about her Caring Critters book series, which uses charming animal characters to teach kids vital skills like emotional regulation, empathy, and problem-solving. Zeba emphasized the concerning trend of decreased playtime in modern kindergarten classrooms, and passionately advocated for administrators to recognize the immense value of unstructured play in fostering children's social-emotional growth. Her Caring Critters resources provide a wonderful solution for parents and teachers looking to nurture these essential life skills. Whether you're drawn to the vibrant cultural tapestry of Angelica and Laguida or the social-emotional wisdom of the Caring Critters series, this episode is a must-listen for anyone invested in supporting the healthy development of young minds. “What really amazed me here was that so many of the authors who submitted stories wrote something completely outside their genre,” reflects best-selling author Douglas Preston, one of the project editors behind the dynamic new collaborative novel Fourteen Days. “This book is full of all kinds of weird stories.”  Yes, it is. And so is podcast guest Douglas Preston, co-author of dozens of New York Times best-selling thrillers written with his longtime writing partner Lincoln Child—a shining example of what it means to write in collaboration. In all, Preston has published 39 books of fiction and non-fiction. In addition to books, Preston writes about archaeology and paleontology for the New Yorker. He has worked as an editor for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and taught nonfiction writing at Princeton University and is the recipient of numerous writing awards in the U.S. and Europe. He served as president of the Authors Guild from 2019 to 2023. Set in a Lower East Side tenement in the early days of the COVID-19 lockdowns, Fourteen Days turns on a narrative frame written by Preston, with contributions from a disparate collection of contemporary writers, headed by fellow project editor Margaret Atwood. In addition to Atwood and Preston, the novel features the “voices” of Charlie Jane Anders, Joseph Cassara, Jennine Capó Crucet, Angie Cruz, Pat Cummings, Sylvia Day, Emma Donoghue, Dave Eggers, Diana Gabaldon, Tess Gerritsen, John Grisham, Maria Hinojosa, Mira Jacob, Erica Jong, CJ Lyons, Celeste Ng, Tommy Orange, Mary Pope Osborne, Alice Randall, Ishmael Reed, Roxana Robinson, Nelly Rosario, James Shapiro, Hampton Sides, R.L. Stine, Nafissa Thompson-Spires, Monique Truong, Scott Turow, Luis Alberto Urrea, Rachel Vail, Weike Wang, Caroline Randall Williams, De'Shawn Charles Winslow, and Meg Wolitzer. All proceeds from the book will be directed to the Authors Guild Foundation, the charitable and educational arm of the Authors Guild, dedicated to empowering all writers, from all backgrounds, at all stages of their careers.  Learn more about Douglas Preston: Author's Guild Author's Guild Foundation Instagram Facebook Preston & Child website The Lost Time: And Other Real-Life Stories of Bones, Burials, and Murder Please support the sponsors who support our show: Daniel Paisner's Balloon Dog  Daniel Paisner's SHOW: The Making and Unmaking of a Network Television Pilot Unforgiving: Lessons from the Fall by Lindsey Jacobellis Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Libro.fm (ASTOLDTO) | 2 audiobooks for the price of 1 when you start your membership Film Freaks Forever! podcast, hosted by Mark Jordan Legan and Phoef Sutton A Mighty Blaze podcast The Writer's Bone Podcast Network Misfits Market (WRITERSBONE) | $15 off your first order  Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Wizard Pins (WRITERSBONE) | 20% discount

Once again it was a title that caught our eye, leading us to a the book that was even more intriguing than the title. The book is How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water. The author is Angie Cruz. The book is a fascinating character study of Cara Romero, a Dominican immigrant who came to this country more than 25 years ago. She needs a job. There are 12 chapters— each a transcription of one of Cara's meetings with a professional job counselor. You come to know Cara - or do you really? As she talks to the counselor and tells her/him not just about herself but about the immigrant community of which she is a part? A reader, we believe, will thoroughly enjoy getting to know Cara. A listener to The Book Case will enjoy getting to know Angie Cruz. Instead of an independent bookstore this week we talk to each other about books we've read this year that we loved, but might not have been suited to a podcast. From New York, the greatest city in the world, it's The Update with Brandon Julien! While many are celebrating Earth Day, today's road stop is at Richmond Terrace in the St. George section of Staten Island. Some stories talked about on today's show were: 1. The coronavirus has sunk major New York City events from the St. Patrick's Day Parade to the 50th anniversary LGBT Pride march, but its famous July Fourth fireworks extravaganza will happen -- in some form. Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday that one way or another, the show will go on. He says fireworks sponsor Macy's agrees. 2. Hilary Mantel's “The Mirror and the Light” and Bernardine Evaristo's “Girl, Woman, Other” are among six finalists for the international Women's Prize for Fiction. The list announced Tuesday also includes Natalie Haynes' “A Thousand Ships” and Maggie O'Farrell's “Hamnet.” Nominated alongside the four U.K. writers are American authors Angie Cruz for “Dominicana” and Jenny Offill for “Weather.” 3. Four-time All Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski is back in the NFL and reunited with Tom Brady. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers completed a trade for the retired New England star. They sent a fourth-round pick in this week's draft to the Patriots for Gronkowski and a seventh-round selection. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brandon-julien/support
