Roger Ehrenberg is a legend of the venture industry as the Founder of IA Ventures, among the most successful seed-stage venture firms of this generation, having seeded companies including Datadog (NASDAQ: DDOG), Digital Ocean (NYSE: DOCN), The Trade Desk (NASDAQ: TTD) and Wise (LSE: WISE.L). Today Roger is the Founder and Managing Partner of Eberg Capital, a pioneer in bridging the gap among sports franchises, sports betting, media and entertainment. Roger's current sports investments include stakes in the Miami Marlins, Real Salt Lake, Alpine Racing, Betr, Commonwealth, Kero Sports, Simplebet, SlamBall, Smarkets and WagerWire. In Today's Episode with Roger Ehrenberg We Discuss: 1. The Commoditisation of Venture and Worsening Returns: Why does Roger disagree with Doug Leone that "we have moved from a boutique high margin business to a commoditised low margin industry"? Why does Roger believe we will see consistently worsening returns in venture? Is this influx of LP capital cyclical or is it here to stay? 2. The New LPs and The Broken Existing LP World: Why does Roger think the existing incentive structure for LPs is totally broken? Who are the most important new LPs entering the venture market? How do sovereigns and pension funds entering venture change the industry? Which players have capitalised on this new LP class best? 3. Where Does the Liquidity Come From: With the closed IPO window and lack of M&A, where will liquidity come from in the next 24 months? Would a Trump administration open M&A markets? Does Roger agree M&A markets are shut down? When does Roger believe IPO markets will open again? Will Databricks and Stripe go out in 2024? If Roger were to run a continuity fund strategy, how would he structure it? What would he do? 4. When to Sell and When to Hold: How does Roger advise managers on when to sell vs when to hold? How important is it for a new firm to have a company go public in the first five years? What are Roger's biggest lessons from selling The Trade Desk at a $2.5BN valuation? How does Roger think about managers thinking they should manage the public book of their portfolio for their LPs? What are the pros and cons? 5. Relationship to Money: Do rich investors make better investors? How does investing when you have a lot of cash already change your mindset around investing and exiting? How does Roger analyse his relationship to money today? What have been the single biggest needle movers in his wealth journey? How did it feel when he made a $6M bonus? 6. The Secrets to Parenthood and Marriage: What does it mean to be a great father for Roger? How does Roger think about bringing his children up with the same level of hunger and ambition, despite being brought up with such wealth? What are Roger's two biggest lessons on the secret to a great marriage?

Jason Trost is the founder and CEO of both the Betting Exchange, Smarkets and the up-and-coming bookmaker, SBK and he joined me in Episode 62 to talk about his time running both companies and the many challenges in the industry right now.Jason talks candidly throughout about his work first of all in setting up Smarkets, including taking on Betfair, the challenges of attracting customers and their goal to be different in terms of simplifying and improving the exchange experience. He also explains their approach to commission rates and liquidity, including the setup and usage of their own trading arm to provide betting volume across the range of markets on Smarkets. Not one to rest on his laurels, in 2019, Jason setup the bookmaker, SBK as a way of appealing to those who prefer a more traditional bookmaking setup, but with the advantage of better odds based on those available from the Smarkets exchange. He explains the challenges of this including advertising restrictions and their quest to replicate many of the more exotic bets that many regular punters look for such as multiples, yankees & lucky 15s.Jason also tackles the thorny topic of affordability limits and the various checks and balances forced upon all operators at the moment to comply with current rules. He has some strong opinions on why gambling is being singled out when other 'sin industries' are not and why banks should be more involved when it comes to these checks. He also rails against the double standards that has seen some bookmakers benefit from operating in offshore jurisdictions where betting is not legal and the unfair financial advantage that gives them elsewhere, including in regulated markets such as the UK.I really enjoyed my chat with Jason as someone happy to speak openly and honestly about not only running both an exchange and a sportsbook, but also the various challenges facing the betting industry as a whole. And for those of you on the fence, we do recommend checking out both Smarkets as a Betfair alternative and also SBK for the often best-value odds you can find in several markets.Discover More:Learn more on the Smart Betting Club and how we help winning bettors at https://smartbettingclub.com/ Smarkets: https://smarkets.com/SBK: https://getsbk.com/Contact Jason: jason.trost@smarkets.comPodcast feedback - contact SBC on twitter @sbcinfoRead more about each SBC Podcast episode: https://smartbettingclub.com/the-smart-betting-club-podcast/

Introducing Metaforecast: A Forecast Aggregator and Search Tool by NunoSempere, Ozzie Gooen

The Nonlinear Library: EA Forum Top Posts

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Introducing Metaforecast: A Forecast Aggregator and Search Tool, published by NunoSempere, Ozzie Gooen on the Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction The last few years have seen a proliferation of forecasting platforms. These platforms differ in many ways, and provide different experiences, filters, and incentives for forecasters. Some platforms like Metaculus and Hypermind use volunteers with prizes, others, like PredictIt and Smarkets are formal betting markets. Forecasting is a public good, providing information to the public. While the diversity among platforms has been great for experimentation, it also fragments information, making the outputs of forecasting far less useful. For instance, different platforms ask similar questions using different wordings. The questions may or may not be organized, and the outputs may be distributions, odds, or probabilities. Fortunately, most of these platforms either have APIs or can be scraped. We've experimented with pulling their data to put together a listing of most of the active forecasting questions and most of their current estimates in a coherent and more easily accessible platform. Metaforecast Metaforecast is a free & simple app that shows predictions and summaries from 10+ forecasting platforms. It shows simple summaries of the key information; just the immediate forecasts, no history. Data is fetched daily. There's a simple string search, and you can open the advanced options for some configurability. Currently between all of the indexed platforms we track ~2100 active forecasting questions, ~1200 (~55%) of which are on Metaculus. There are also 17,000 public models from Guesstimate. One obvious issue that arose was the challenge of comparing questions among platforms. Some questions have results that seem more reputable than others. Obviously a Metaculus question with 2000 predictions seems more robust than one with 3 predictions, but less obvious is how a Metaculus question with 3 predictions compares to one from Good Judgement Superforecasters where the number of forecasters is not clear, or to estimates from a Smarkets question with £1,000 traded. We believe that this is an area that deserves substantial research and design experimentation. In the meantime we use a star rating system. We created a function that estimates reputability as “stars” on a 1-5 system using the forecasting platform, forecast count, and liquidity for prediction markets. The estimation came from volunteers acquainted with the various forecasting platforms. We're very curious for feedback here, both on what the function should be, and how to best explain and show the results. Metaforecast is being treated as an experimental endeavor of QURI. We spent a few weeks on it so far, after developing technologies and skill sets that made it fairly straightforward. We're currently expecting to support it for at least a year and provide minor updates. We're curious to see what interest is like and respond accordingly. Metaforecast is being led by Nuño Sempere, with support from Ozzie Gooen, who also wrote much of this post. Sport dominates online betting but he is a “politics junky” and his passion for politics and trying to understand political outcomes is clear and an important part of the Smarkets product range. The company has been steadily growing for 13 years, and Jason explains how his appreciation of how quickly time passes has changed as he has learnt and matured himself. He is a fearless optimist and was always ambitious to do something big but wasn't sure what it should be, in fact, he went to university without knowing what he would do, but once in the world of work he looked at the betting industry could see how technology could solve the problem of complexity and user experience and his focus crystallised. On that journey, he has found that people rather than technology have been his biggest area of interest. Understanding the people he works with and how they work with each other is interesting. He is fully appreciative of how a diversity of interests and abilities can exist together successfully in a thriving business, but he sees a weakness in how people are so often not good at the hard conversations that are necessary to move a project on. He wants to “get the most out of people and help them be the best they can be” and his role is to facilitate that, but he sees a weakness in our societal inability to engage in “respectful good faith conflict”. Jason's view is that our society is at the teenager stage where we are uncomfortable sharing our own views and vulnerabilities, and as a result businesses can be slow to develop. Not everyone is driven in the way that an entrepreneur is but everyone can make the most of their opportunities with more frank and non-judgemental interaction, bound together through transparent targets for the future.

Being authentic is when our actions and words are congruent with our beliefs and values. It is being ourselves, not an imitation of what we think we should be or have been told we should be. It can be reflected in our sense of fashion, hair style, and even the words we use. While rewarding and fulfilling, authenticity can be hard, especially at work. While many organizations are striving to create diverse environments where employees can be authentic and feel a sense of belonging, efforts often fall short of their inclusive ambitions.Continuing our Special Series on Inclusion, Equality, and Belonging, Tamara McMillen, Roderick Jefferson, and I were joined by Celine Crawford, Chief Communications Officer at Smarkets to explore the topic of authenticity. What does it mean to be authentic and can we be authentic at work? How is authenticity related to achieving Inclusion, Equality, and Belonging? Why is it important that we are able to be authentic - especially at work? What is the impact of inauthenticity?Together we explore these questions , share real life experiences and offer tips for individuals and businesses to TAKE ACTION and deliver a work environment and corporate culture which naturally fosters, supports, celebrates, and flourishes with authentic employees.Give a listen and together we will convert words into action.Curious how you can create an environment where authenticity is welcome and made possible.Company culture and values should be clear and explained as part of the hiring process and throughout. The degree of authenticity will need to live within the bounds of the corporate core values.Create safe spaces where employees have the ability to come in and be their full self without worry. If you have the ability, enable access to mental health services, much as you would physical health services, for your employees.Teach leaders how to be authentic. You must help your leaders to model and live your core values. There were so many other great tips and insights, don't miss out on this one.
