I respond to a thought-provoking question from Jason over at the Nerds RPG Variety Cast: Should GMs pre-plan specific adventure site bonuses, or leave them open to improvisation? I share why I opt for a flexible, on-the-fly approach to site design and gameplay in D&D and other RPGs. Topics include: * The pitfalls of pre-planning bonuses and tactical combat. * How abstract combat and player creativity enrich the game. * Using luck rolls to resolve player actions dynamically. * Encouraging collaborative storytelling for a more immersive experience. In this episode, Wynne Leon and Vicki Atkinson talk about site design and WordPress themes. We know - we can hear you groaning from here. In fact, Wynne is groaning right along with you even though this is a large part of what she's done professionally for 30 years. But if you are thinking about changing up your site or even just wondering if you should, there are some good tactics to help make this manageable. We talk through some of the design considerations to be mindful of like navigation and search. And then we look at the sections to consider when picking a theme like the header, footer, and sidebar. We address some of the problems we've heard people have encountered when switching themes in WordPress like content disappearing and inability to revert back. Wynne offers some strategies for avoiding that flavor of disappointment and disaster. There is a presentation that gives these elements and examples to download as a companion piece to this podcast. Here's the thing – tackling site design isn't always fun, but it's better when we do it together with some good approaches and tactics. We're confident you'll love the scenic and beautiful places we explore as we share the power of storytelling as told through well-designed sites. We know you'll love it! P.S. Howdy folks!  In this episode of The Air Conditioning Podcast, we were joined by Craig Staley of HG Site Designs.  Based in Omaha, Nebraska in good ol' US of A, Craig and his team specialise in Small to Medium sized Businesses who are looking to scale their business without spending massive hours of their own time and dollars.  Craig and his team consider themselves to be long term strategic partners to help you grow and improve your business. There is so much to cover in the area of marketing, specifically, Google Ads, Google My Business, SEO and Reviews, and as usual we unfortunately ran well short of time but tried to cram as many gold nuggets in as we could in the time we had with him.  We hope you find the episode helpful! Here's a tad of what we covered….. Can you tell us more about your company and how you help businesses? (7:00) Once you have a website, how do you drive traffic to it? (10:00) Craig talks about Google My Business…what is it, why it's important and where does it appear on Google? (10:30) Why are Google Reviews important and is it better to have a high star rating with few reviews or lesser star rating with a larger volume of ratings? (12:30) What's the best way to acquire client Google Reviews? (15:35) Is it ok to respond to Negative Reviews? (21:00) Is it more important to have a Google My Business page than to have a website? And for anyone just starting out in business with a limited budget, what advice would you offer? (23:45)          For anyone who might already have an online presence and are looking to grow their business, what advice could you offer to assist with growth?  (26:10) Do you think it's a good idea to outsource your marketing and social media or should we be doing it ourselves? (29:00) And there was plenty more goodies in there…. We'd like to thank Craig for joining on the show and hope that you find it helpful with your marketing of your business. If you'd like to reach out to Craig,  you can find him at craig@hgsitedesign.com or as Craig mentioned he has some free work sheets and videos to help set up your Google My Business page at www.hgsitedesign.com/gmb.  Also, don't forget to check out his podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-small-business-school/id1510776072 But until the next time guys…bye for now!

Finding that magic formula for premium website performance can be challenging, especially for roofing contractors new to the world of search engine optimization (SEO)! In today’s podcast, Nolen and Jason discuss the various elements that Google demands for website optimization. If you’ve been struggling with lackluster search rankings, be sure to listen in! Key Elements to Listen For * Reputation management is essential, especially for newly-minted companies. * Schema and geo-tagging offer profound benefits for your Roofer SEO. * Roofing SEO demands effort from many parts of your marketing, not just your website. * Bounce rate isn’t the top metric for your website optimization! The Key Pillars of Website Optimization When it comes to optimizing your website for Google Search, there’s no shortcut to instantly rank #1 on Google. Website optimization relies on a combination of elements including * Internal Content, * Site Design, * External Listings, and * Reputation Management. Thankfully, there’s lots of digital marketing research on roofing SEO and services willing to aid your company. Below, we’ve listed out some of the most important tools our industry specialists can use to ensure premium rankings for our roofing clients. This is by no means a comprehensive list, so don’t go jumping into web design without doing your own due diligence! Keyword Strategy & Optimization You probably know by now the crucial role of keywords when it comes to SEO for roofers. Most roofers however, only focus on securing the highest volume words and phrases known as primary keywords. “Roofing contractor” and “shingle repair” may offer incredibly high volume on a national level, but they also come with extreme competition. After all, numerous other roofing companies compete for the same words and phrases! Winning Strategies to Rank Higher * Tip #1: Try adding popular industry brands to your primary keywords! * Tip #2: Sprinkle in secondary keywords (low-volume, low-competition) around your primaries. * Tip #3: Optimize your keywords for your service area! Using brand names around your primary keywords provides two benefits. First, it draws in people with brand-specific roofing materials to your website. You’d be surprised how many clients just ten brand-optimized pages can bring in. Branded and other types of secondary keywords also allow your business to rank high for hundreds of words and phrases. A high number of low volume keywords equals a considerable boost for your site traffic! If you haven’t done so already, make sure to incorporate long tail keywords with your primary city, state attached. Not only will you avoid accidentally competing with roofers outside your service area, you’ll earn higher quality leads too. Last of all, remember to continue releasing keyword-rich content. Blogs, professional guides, and infographics offer great ways to engage customers and keep your website ranking high on Google Search results. The trade show is the largest solar industry event of the year. Jason Loyet, President and Founder of Solar Site Design or SSD, says, “We are excited to introduce this enhancement to our platform that will revolutionize the cost of solar energy across the United States.” Jason adds, “Our mission is to drive down the cost of solar and keep all coal in the ground. We are excited to be a part of the solution for driving down the cost of solar across the world.” Solar energy isn’t just good for the environment. It is good business. Jason Says, “Solar energy is expected to grow to a $155 billion dollar global market by 2018. The solar industry is on track to install 100 GW worldwide by 2015. That is doubling the capacity in two-and-a-half years.” Because virtually the entire cost of solar power is in the form of up front capital costs, the only way to bring down the long term cost of energy is to reduce the total capital cost of the installation. While solar panels are falling in price, the proportion of total cost represented by panels is also falling, meaning that reducing costs further will have to come from other aspects of the business. Erik Melang, Senior Managing Director for Clean Energy Advisors [one of our sponsors], explains, “One of the biggest impediments to solar adoption is the soft cost of the installation. Large developers are paying over $.50 watt to find projects. Distributive generation requires distributive origination at the local level. SSD provides the platform to make that happen. SSD’s collaborative model is an impact capital model that is disrupting how the sales process is generally carried out. SSD is bringing down the cost of solar installations and making it easier for developers to find the projects that best fit their project profile.” ------------------------- Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2bCOCXu. The A Lot You Got to Holler Cavalcade of Firsts continues, when co-hosts Zach Mortice and Ben Schulman sit down with Ernie Wong of Site Design Group--the show's first ever landscape architect guest! On the agenda: shared streets in Uptown, Chicago's many, many basket-case ruins and slag pits, and an oft-overlooked question: Is shutting down the Dan Ryan and setting prairie grasses in its median on fire a good idea, or the greatest idea? The answer will shock you! Special thanks to recording engineer Tim Joyce.
