Guests Matthew Wild | Stephen Paul Weber Panelists Richard Littauer Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain! Richard is in Portland at FOSSY, the Free and Open Source Software Yearly conference that is held by the Software Freedom Conservancy. Today, he engages with XMPP protocol experts Matthew Wild and Stephen Paul. Matthew shares about his project, Snikket, which aims to make XMPP more accessible for everyday communication among friends and family groups. Stephen introduces JMP, a project designed to facilitate connections using an XMPP based stack, allowing smoother transitions from other communication platforms. They explore why XMPP stands out against competitors, and you'll get a glimpse into JMP's transparent funding model, Snikket's user base, and the open source projects it's built upon. Our guests also discuss their future visions, highlighting the importance of open communication and the potential for growth in the XMPP ecosystem. Hit download to hear more! [00:00:48] Matthew talks about his work with Snikket, and Stephen talks about the project JMP, which helps people connect with their friends and family using XMPP based stack and transition from other communication platforms. [00:01:57] Matthew explains why XMPP is a better protocol for Snikket compared to Signal; the main reason being that XMPP is federated, giving users more choice. [00:02:42] Matthew tells us how XMPP is different from Matrix and Delta Chat. [00:04:06] Stephen agrees with Matthew, stating that JMP also supports multiple protocols and wishes to promote open communication, and acknowledges concerns around Matrix's scalability and funding models. [00:04:47] Stephen describes JMP's straightforward funding model with customers paying a monthly fee for their services. Matthew reveals that Snicket's user base is hard to determine due to self-hosting and different statistics. [00:06:21] Matthew explains that Snicket is built on a variety of XMPP-based open-source projects, including Prosody, Conversations on Android, and Siskin on iOS. Stephen mentions that JMP is a five-member team. [00:07:37] Stephen explains JMP's business model, stating they function on a traditional business model where customer directly pay for the services they receive, and they operate as a cooperative. [00:08:59] JMP has about 3,300 paying customers and Stephen explains they don't have a dedicated marketing team, but they use blogs. [00:10:03] Stephen explains that he and the other primary founder of JMP do not currently draw income from the project. [00:10:54] Richard asks Matthew and Stephen about their long-term vision for their projects. Matthew explains his goal is open communication and Stephen shares his goal is create sustainable funding for the XMPP ecosystem. [00:13:22] Why are Matthew and Stephen focused on XMPP? Matthew tells us he always had a passion for communication and Stephen emphasizes the importance of communication, stating it's often overlooked and consumes by proprietary silos, which can be harmful. Synopsis It's a book – it's a YouTube video – it's a concert hall work! It's by Stookey and Snicket! Now, “Stookey and Snicket” is not the name of a law firm in some obscure novel by Charles Dickens, but is in fact the collaborative team of American composer Nathaniel Stookey and American novelist Daniel Handler, who writes popular children's books under the pen name of Lemony Snicket. Stookey was the youngest composer ever commissioned for the San Francisco Symphony's New and Unusual Music Series when he collaborated with Handler on a piece for narrator and orchestra. Their collaboration, entitled “The Composer Is Dead,” premiered on this date in 2006. This “new and usual” work with a macabre title is similar to Prokofiev's “Peter and the Wolf” and Britten's “The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra” in that it intends to introduce young audiences to the instruments of the orchestra. But anyone familiar with Lemony Snicket books can expect something a little quirky, and, in fact, “The Composer Is Dead” is a murder mystery, complete with a police inspector rounding up the usual suspects, and eventually pointing the finger… And if you want to find out “whodunit” – well, you'll have to buy the book! Music Played in Today's Program Lemony Snicket and Nathaniel Stookey – The Composer is Dead (Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler), narrator; San Francisco Symphony; Edwin Outwater, cond.) ABOUT THE AUTHOR - LEMONY SNICKET Lemony Snicket claims he was nowhere near the scene of the crime. He is the author of several other unpleasant stories, including those in the bestselling: A Series of Unfortunate Events, and The Lump of Coal. ABOUT THE BOOK - POISON FOR BREAKFAST A Note from the Publisher: In the years since this publishing house was founded, we have worked with an array of wondrous authors who have brought illuminating clarity to our bewildering world. Now, instead, we bring you Lemony Snicket. Over the course of his long and suspicious career, Mr. Snicket has investigated many things, including villainy, treachery, conspiracy, ennui, and various suspicious fires. In this book, he is investigating his own death. Poison for Breakfast is a different sort of book than others we have published, and from others you may have read. It is different from other books Mr. Snicket has written. It could be said to be a book of philosophy, something almost no one likes, but it is also a mystery, and many people claim to like those. Certainly Mr. Snicket didn't relish the dreadful task of solving it, but he had no choice. It was put in front of him, right there, on his plate.

This week, Josh and Dietrich build a playlist around the demented holiday classic A Nightmare Before Christmas. Despite being a bit of a grouch about Christmas, Josh has always enjoyed the skewed gothic comedy of this tale of Halloween trying to steal the holidays, and recommends the Terry Pratchett classic Hogfather along side the anarchic glee of Gremlins. Dietrich talks about the ability of children to "embrace the weird", and looks to A Series of Unfortunate Events as a natural companion with the dark humor, style, and joyful mayhem. Josh wraps the discussion up with a brilliant masterpiece of a novel from Clive Barker, and finally, they both rave about the short-lived comedy Pushing Daisies. Next week, the pair will tackle the task of recommending the next great story for those who either love Harry Potter, or find the author problematic and want a different path to take. His latest volume of Palookaville was published last year by Drawn and Quarterly, and while every release of Seth's signature series is worth noting, this one is particularly significant. It wraps up his "Clyde Fans" storyline, one he began in 1997 in Palookaville #10. Derek asks Seth about the process of undertaking this ongoing narrative and the considerations of sustaining it for twenty years. They also discuss the autobiographical "Nothing Lasts," a series that Seth began in volume 21 of Palookaville. Much of the conversation concerns Seth's autobiographical storytelling, or his faux-autobiographical comics (in the case of It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken), and the ways in which the past informs his sense of place and identity. Indeed, memory is a major theme in Seth's stories, and the two spend a good deal of time talking about it as a defining feature of his comics. But while much of the discussion centers on the most recent volume of Palookaville, Derek also asks his guest about the general trajectory of his career. They talk about his sketchbook comics, such as Wimbledon Green and The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists, his evolving illustration style, the creation of Dominion, the melancholy George Sprott: 1894-1975, his rubber stamp diary, his life-defining relationships with Chester Brown and Joe Matt, his design and illustration work for Fantagraphics' Complete Peanuts series and Lemony Snicket's All the Wrong Questions books, his plans for future issues of Palookaville, and his wife's business, Crown Barber Shop.

What happens when you read a beloved and well-known children's book for the first time, and instead of being a child you're a fully grown adult? It's difficult to involve yourself in the story and let your imagination drive things forward, especially when you can't help but deconstruct the narrative and suck the joy out of everything. But as it turns out for Callum and Ryan – Thug Book Club hosts and part-time book fans – they manage to do a bit of both, as they tackle Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning. And after waxing lyrical on Harry Potter and Roald Dahl in previous episodes, this is unknown territory for them. How will they interpret Lemony Snicket's demographically fashioned writing style? Or the literary name dropping on page after page? Or the underlying but very obvious (and therefore troubling) nods to some very dodgy things indeed? One thing is for sure though: this is a behemoth of recent pop culture. So enjoy the nonsensical hot takes and lose yourself in Snicket's bizarre universe. Spoilers and swearing as usual.

The first unfortunate event was this movie getting greenlit, and the most recently was our having to watch it.  Hopefully this will put an end to Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.  Actually, it's a pretty entertaining movie, though Bobby disagrees, as he takes the movie--and Jim Carrey--to task.

It's National Geography Week and Children's Book Week, November 12-19. And we have just the tale to celebrate both occasions: Hansel and Gretel (a la Lemony Snicket meets Wizard of Oz). We are back in San Jose, having been to Sacramento to appear on the ABC-affiliated show Sac and Company and to Modesto to perform at the library this week. We'll tell you a bit about the inner workings of a live TV show. And right now Zephyr is helping pull apart Callson Manor, the haunted house he worked at last week, while we babysit the property at night. Nominated for Storytelling Podcast Award! Our story "Simple Ivan" has been selected as one of 12 finalists in the Pickle Tales "Tell Me a Story" Podcasting Competion. And so long as you are at it be sure to add us to your favorites http://activated.podcastpickle.com and leave us your comments. Please check back for more information and links November 13th. Hansel and GretelHansel and Gretel get ditched in the woods and have to escape an evil hag who lives in a sweet house and find their way back home. In our version they meet a few other storybook characters who give them some bad directions along the way. National Geography Week We've been traveling full time since 1992 and have had more than our share of bad directions. Nowadays, we use GPS, computer map programs and Google Maps on our cell phone to get where we are going. But way back when we started touring, we had to rely on people to give us directions. It's amazing we got anywhere! Hardly anyone knows the name of the streets in their hometown. And we have repeatedly scratched our heads after hearing "Well, you turn left at the old Jones place and if you come to the train tracks you've gone to far!". And "Just turn right at the corn field." We'd like to point out that we are in Kansas and surrounded by cornfields but don't have the heart. So bottom line, study those maps and read those street signs so you can help someone find their way. And if you want to get anywhere, learn your geography and how to use a GPS! Or else you will have to leave some bread crumbs! Rescources for National Geography Week Children's Book Week Zephyr has been reading the entire "Series of Unfortunate Events" to mom and dad this month. And in this episode Dennis recounts his encounter with Daniel Handler (a.k.a. Lemony Snicket). Reading out loud is an excellent way to celebrate Children's Book Week. We hope you'll celebrate by following a map to your local library to see what special events they have planned. And while you are there, check out some childrens' books. Especially in the folktale section (Dewey Decimal 398.2). And be sure to get a copy of "Tales from Under the Crevice" or the sequel "Tales from Under the Nook" by our resident young author Zephyr Goza at your library or bookstore, or online at CreviceTales.com.
