Today we have Jessie on the podcast and before we dive in, let's hear her response to a couple rapid-fire questions: Q1. What was the first thing you did this morning?A1. Besides getting up to pee... haha. I tongue scrape.Q2. What is your go-to Karaoke anthem?A2. Shania Twain - I grew up on her!Q3. If you could eat one food every day, what would it be?A2. Pizza! Now, let's dive into the episode! Jessie is a holistic fitness coach and certified personal trainer. She helps entrepreneurial women prioritize their health by working with their bodies instead of against them. She got into this work through her own journey in this space.Jessie describes holistic health as widening the lens and creating a larger perspective. It's important to not just look at exercise and nutrition - these things are so customized to each individual. To start she shares that mindset is the key. If you want to change habits, you have to accept that change is uncomfortable.Next, blood sugar regulation is so important. Consistent glucose spikes can lead to so many unwanted things within our bodies. Some of the red flags that might come up when we're heading down a path that doesn't serve us physically, emotionally, etc. might be if you aren't being validated in how you are feeling. Just because we try to normalize things doesn't mean it's supposed to happen. When we become aware of something we can make a change. We need to remember that we permanently live in our bodies and we have to advocate for ourselves - it's important to be heard and understood even by someone in a professional field. The difference between men and women is something we cover because so often we lump them together. The male hormonal cycle is 24 hours long, but for women, we have a 28-day cycle. Jessie goes into each phase of our cycle and how each of them works and what happens within our body during each phase. One of the key takeaways is that we need to honor our body in each cycle and that might mean slowing down and allowing ourselves to rest. While other times we might feel more creative and social. Going to the gym and doing the same workout every day isn't necessarily what is best. There are ways to track your phases, besides just your menstrual phase aka when we bleed. Jessie describes what we can physically look for in order to help us track and stay in tune with our bodies. She recommends using In the Flo app to track. Our bodies can tell us so much when we lean in.A lot of women think the only way to avoid pregnancy or heal symptoms they are experiencing is with birth control but Jessies explains the other options we can take that empower us to be in control should you decide birth control is not for you.Jessie shares how important nutrition is to supporting our hormone health and how making changes there can actually help us heal from the inside. In this episode we talk to Jessie about how she handled an aggressive pig. Jessie was not always a pig lover. Her daughter wanted a farm pig themed party and the day after the party Jessie's father brought home 2 baby pigs for her daughter. They were told that the female pig was spayed but 3 months later they had 4 baby pigs. They all were trampled except 1 so she hand raised the one that was left. She turned to Google and Facebook pages to learn how to raise a pig but found very misleading information. She didn't understand the pigs body language after she turned 1 and that's when Leila became aggressive to the point of biting. When she got bit that is when she became fearful of her. She reached out for help and got totally different answers from so many different people and started to consider rehoming Leila because she didn't know what else to do. She decided to get on YouTube and found my channel and reached out for help. After about 1 year of working with Leila and learning her body language she is doing much better and is not charging at Jessie or biting anymore. She tells us the tactics she used to train Leila to not be so aggressive. Jessie decided to get another pig Harley, so Leila wasn't lonely from needing to be separated due to her behaviors. Harley was about 1 year old when he came home, and he quickly became the top hog and has put Leila in her place and that has changed her personality for the better. Harley was a piglet from Autumn Acres and has found an amazing fit in Jessies home. The two pigs are polar opposites but they each are so loved. The thing Jessie loves most about Leila is that she is so lazy and loves to cuddle and Harley is the one that keeps everyone on their toes and loves to talk. Chris & Kelsey invite one of the Jessies back for some seriously great and bonkers movies! The Classic Film: House/Hausu (1977) "A schoolgirl and six of her classmates travel to her aunt's country home, which turns out to be haunted” (IMDb.com). House may be—and this isn't a joke—just about the most bonkers horror movie ever made. And it's magnificent. The Modern Film: Midsommar (2019) "A couple travels to Scandinavia to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult” (IMDb.com). You might already know what we think of Ari Aster as a horror filmmaker from our episode on Hereditary, and we get more of his signature auteur style with Midsommar. But is his sophomore feature film more or less evocative than his first? Each day in the United States women are victims of all types of violence at the hands of men – murder, domestic abuse, sexual assault – yet too often as a nation, we take little or no notice. Her death left Blodgett stunned, shocked and filled with anguish, yet also inspired him to do all he can to prevent such horrors from happening to others. As he says, “It's too late for Jessie, but not too late for millions of girls and women,” “My question is: How many more Jessies will there be before we get the job done?” Dr. Buck Blodgett is the author of A Message from Jessie and is the Founder of The LOVE>hate Project (www.ligth.org).
