Join my conversation with singer/songwriter Geary Beals. Gary is from a small, predominantly black rural community of Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia, Gary's involvement in the local church choir, and as part of the gospel group Light of Day, helped develop his soulful voice. Influenced by velvet-voiced crooners Al Green and Marvin Gaye and universally admired vocalists like Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson, Beals continues to create a sound all his own. Beal's 2005 self-titled debut album, and follow-up release "The Rebirth of...", earned him widespread praise, along with a Juno nomination for "Best R&B/Soul Recording," and East Coast Music Award, and nominations for an Urban Music Award and a Canadian Radio Music Award.  Despite his successes, Gary felt confined by traditional constructs of music written, recorded and performed for the masses, and wasn't able to identify with stereotypical love songs (boy likes girl; boy pursues girl, or vice versa). Feeling like he had hidden parts of himself for so long, Gary felt like he had lost sight of who he was. Periods of healing and self discovery eventually led to self-love, growth, power and happiness.  Now stronger than ever, Gary Beals introduces us to more refined and conscious version of himself. Wow, it has been a while! Thank you so much for being patient while I am navigating and juggling a lot of work and life. This is an interview/chat with the wonderfully kind, Jamila Ford. Jamila is the host of "The Working Singer Podcast." This convo goes all the way back to October, I believe. Like I said, life has been crazy. Since then, she has performed around the world as a solo artist and as a backing vocalist, lending her talent to the projects of artists such as Seal, Angelo (Fishbone), Melody Gardot, Spiritualized (Coachella Festival), and Bonnie Pointer (The Pointer Sisters). Drawing influences from jazz to R&B to pop, she can give you a history of 50 years of American popular music during one of her sets, with her sultry voice providing the linchpin.    Jamila released her debut EP, the breezy Traces of the Day, in January of 2001; the funky ‘70s R&B-inspired Fabulous EP in 2003; and her first full-length album, the soulful and revealing Enough (a nominee for Independent Music Awards best Soul/R&B album), in October 2010.   Her latest EP, the critically-acclaimed The Deep End, was released in September 2014. A collection of reinterpreted standards and an original composition. Jamila's smoky, sophisticated, and self-assured vocals breathe new life into “All Blues,” “Gentle Rain,” “Sugar,” and “Wild Is the Wind.” Her original composition, “Silencio,” is a strutting Latin-jazz tinged ode to the unspoken connection between lovers.  Says Jamila, "I love music and I love to sing. Music is my genuine path in life. It is the best way for me to give of myself to this world. I sacrifice for it in a way that I do for nothing else. I feel most whole and most connected when I'm on stage singing."    The Deep End was included in the first round of ballots for three GRAMMYs for Best Jazz Vocal Album, Best New Artist and Best Engineered Album and earned raves from critics, who hailed her as "...an exquisite song stylist validating an impressive artistic repertoire with economy and style" (CJ Bond, jazmuzic.com) and proclaimed "Ford is ready to take her place among the elite of sophisticated jazz vocalists" (Paul Freeman, Pop Culture Classics).    An active member of West Coast Songwriters (WCS), Jamila was awarded Hollywood Songwriter of the Year for her song “Not Exactly Perfect” in 2007. He still performs with Junkhouse and since also pursuing his solo music career he collaborated with Billy Bob Thornton, Daniel Lanois, Mark Howard and Tim Gibbons to record the movie soundtrack for the Academy Award-winning movie ‘Sling Blade.’    Wilson won the best Soul R&B recording for ‘Sentimental Fool’ and his ‘Jimmy Boy’ was nominated for the record of the year. He has had the opportunity to play with the best including Bob Dylan, Scorpions, Sarah McLaughlan, Blue Rodeo, Bare Naked Ladies, Our Lady Peace, Ben Harper and Teenage Head to name a few. .Junkhouse reunites for half a dozen events every year and still goes strong to this day, respective members doing solo projects. Greg Osei is a Soul/R&B musician, performer, storyteller, and model.  His music combines African, Latin, and Afro-Caribbean musical styles, in English and Spanish. He performs regularly throughout New York City. He describes his mission as creating spaces of "possibility, change, questioning, incitement, joy, helpful discomfort, and ultimately love through art and a collaborative creative experience with his audiences." Greg just released a new video of a performance at Sofar Sounds, which you can find here. I asked Greg to chat with me because I remember him as a very powerful person. We went to high school together, so when I recently saw his work on the internet I thought it'd be fun to see what he's been up to. I've always been drawn to performers because I'm interested in the aesthetics of existence; I'm not a performer but I do want to exist more truly, which is to say, more beautifully. Genuine performers have specialized knowledge about how to exist aesthetically, so there is a lot we can learn from them. And Greg is definitely a very authentic performer in the sense that his performance tendency colors how he carries himself, his everyday demeanor, attitude, speech, etc. This is why I remember him as a very powerful person, because the ability to perform is the ability to shape reality.
