I'm not a financial advisor; nothing I write in Superpowers for Good should be considered investment advice. You should seek appropriate counsel before making investment decisions.Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Brian: I think my long-term thinking mindset is perhaps my superpower.Brian Belley, today's guest, has made over 200 angel investments in companies via crowdfunding sites, including an investment in The Super Crowd, Inc., a public benefit corporation, the company I started. He agreed to join me to talk about his insights as an investor. He is also the VP of Product at KingsCrowd. He highlights the value of starting small in crowdfunding. “One of the great things and opportunities of this industry is that you don't have to start big and write a big check. You can start really small and learn along the way.” You can refine and improve your investment process with practice. One of the tools Brian uses is KingsCrowd's ratings for offerings. Those are available to paying subscribers only, but much of the information you need to make your own evaluation is available to you right on the offering page on the portal. Typically, you can find the available deal terms, financial statements, management team information and much more right there. Many investors, Brian notes, develop an investment strategy that includes social or environmental impact. For his own investing, Brian prioritizes financial returns but loves to find companies that also provide social impact. He hit on a key topic, which is the deal terms, including valuation. A great company can offer bad terms–a valuation that is too high for instance. It literally pays to pay attention to the details. He is also careful to build a diverse portfolio, including publicly traded stocks and ETFs, in addition to his crowdfunding investments.Brian sees a key part of his investment strategy as his superpower: long-term thinking.AI Episode Summary* Devin Thorpe introduces Brian Belley, Vice President at KingsCrowd, an angel investor who has made over 200 investments via crowdfunding portals.* Brian shares the story of CrowdWise, his startup that provided educational tools and services for new investors in the crowdfunding industry and was later acquired by KingsCrowd.* Brian discusses his investment process, which involves screening and evaluating deals based on factors such as price, potential market, team evaluation, and deal terms.* He emphasizes the importance of building a diversified portfolio and considering both financial and impact factors when selecting investments.* Brian explains that he occasionally includes debt deals in his portfolio to diversify his assets and offers insights into the current dynamics of the debt deal market.* Devin highlights Brian's superpower of thinking long-term and making trade-offs that may seem like sacrifices in the short term but benefit him in the long run.* Brian suggests that slowing down, reflecting, and aligning one's compass with long-term goals can lead to greater impact and success.* He advises setting annual goals, maintaining balance in various areas of life, and periodically reflecting and making course corrections if necessary.* Brian mentions that people can connect with him on LinkedIn and learn more about KingsCrowd at kingscrowd.com and about the Crowdfunding Professional Association at cfpa.org.* The episode concludes with Devin Thorpe expressing gratitude and wishing Brian success in his investing and work at KingsCrowd. How to Develop Long-Term Thinking As a SuperpowerBrian shared an anecdote to demonstrate how fundamental his long-term thinking is to his nature:When I was seven years old, and this honestly went on for a few years, most kids around that age, right, you're asking for toys or skateboards, stuff to be outside, play with your friends, that type of thing. I actually asked for several Christmas and birthdays in a row to receive savings bonds. That's all I wanted from my family, from my friends, was to give me savings bonds for every holiday, every birthday. Now, he's investing with a long-term vision in startups–like mine.He offered some tips for developing your own long-term thinking. He notes that direction is key. On a cross-country flight from San Francisco, the difference of a few degrees can be the difference between landing in Atlanta or New York City. This requires careful upfront attention to the direction you set. Invest in yourself as you begin your investment journey. “Really small course adjustments can have an outsized impact over time.”With that as context, he notes that it is okay to slow down. “That stereotypical person in their office with the feet up on the desk might look like they're slacking off. But sometimes that's where the creativity is, it's where the good ideas are, it's where you can find your meaning.”By following Brian's advice and example, you can become a better investor, perhaps even developing a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileBrian Belley (he/him):Vice President of Product, KingsCrowdAbout KingsCrowd: KingsCrowd is a data-driven ratings and analytics platform powering all decisions made in the online private markets. I admire the approach but note that a goal for maximizing impact is best accomplished by making money. It works two ways. A company that goes out of business has no impact after it dies. Welcome to Pathfinder #0025, brought to you by Spaced Ventures, the planet's first public space investment portal. Today, we'll be talking about what in the world Amazon is up to in space, with someone who can speak to this probably better than almost anyone else on the planet. Clint Crosier served in the US Air Force and Space Force for 33 years, and helped stand up the latter branch. After retiring as a major general, Amazon recruited Clint to lead AWS's Aerospace and Satellites division. AWS is short for Amazon Web Services, which you'll hear a lot in this conversation. For the uninitiated, AWS is the world's leading cloud computing vendor by market share and revenue. In the last calendar year, Amazon's cloud unit made $62 billion, representing a 37% year over year increase over 2020. And it posted an $18 billion operating profit. AWS's Aerospace & Satellites group announced today that it had achieved a first, by running artificial intelligence/machine learning algorithms on a real-life, orbiting satellite. Clint and Ryan unpack the announcement, and also discuss what his team's building, who they're working with, how cloud and space fit together, and a whole lot more. BROWNSVILLE, Texas - The City of Brownsville is spending $1 million to overhaul its permitting system, interim city manager Helen Ramirez has announced. The reason for doing it, Ramirez said, is to make it easier for businesses to relocate to the city.Ramirez announced the news during a recent conference titled: “The Future of Aerospace, Defense & Energy.” Held at the Brownsville Events Center, the conference was co-hosted by SelectUSA, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation. Ramirez is executive director of GBIC.SelectUSA is a program run by the U.S. Department of Commerce that seeks to attract foreign direct investment to the United States. Every June, SelectUSA hosts a major summit near Washington, D.C. In addition, it has regional spinoff events. Brownsville was the only city in Texas to be selected for a spinoff event. GBIC had to select two industries to focus on and it chose aerospace and energy. In a speech at the spinoff, Ramirez gave a shout out to J. Brant Arseneau, founding partner at 9Point8 Capital and a founder of Spaced Ventures. Both have a presence in Brownsville. She also praised Natalie Rens, founder of Astreia, a company that is building Habitat Zero, a community of 125 homes designed to support Brownsville's growing aerospace hub. Both Arseneau and Rens spoke at the spinoff event.“The fact that they are locating here, they are growing here and believe what we are doing and then tell the world about us is very important because this is a great place to do business,” Ramirez said.“It is an easy place to do business. We are not Austin. We do not want to be another city. We want to be us. We don't want to be known for a permitting process that takes a year and a half to two years. We don't and we won't be that. That is why we redid our codes. The city is doing a new permitting system, spending a million dollars on just how do we streamline permits because we know it can be difficult.”Ramirez added: “So, it is those types of things that the city is doing, that the county is doing to really accelerate the Space economy in our region.”This podcast features Ramirez's remarks at the aerospace conference.

With the explosion of the commercial space industry, there is an increasing interest in investing in space companies. One of the options is a form of crowd funding offered by a company called Space Ventures, and our guest on this edition of The Ex Terra Podcast is Aaron Burnett, its founder and CEO. Spaced Ventures bills itself as the planet's first public space investment portal. By building in access to industry experts and a growing network of space enthusiasts, raising your funding with Spaced Ventures could set your company up for long term success, according to the company. On the podcast, Aaron talks about how crowdfunding works for individuals interested in investing in space companies. Spaced Ventures works with a select group of heavily vetted companies that have a high probability of success. But while investing in space companies has often been limited to a small number of people, Spaced Ventures allows smaller investors to have access to those opportunities. Space is a dynamic, capital intensive industry but its current capital formation is nascent. 98% of space investment has gone to companies in Series A and beyond, while the vast majority of space startups have little or no options for seed funding. The company believes that it is "time to innovate out of the current government and billionaire-only space funding model. We're proud to provide a platform that allows regular people to invest as little as $100 to show their support for space entrepreneurs all around the world." How does what happens in space affect your everyday life? The Ex Terra podcast is dedicated to introducing you to many of the interesting people involved in the commercial space industry, and taking you behind the scenes with many of the companies making significant contributions to the new space economy. From how they work, how they acquire power, how they navigate in orbit, and how they help us all benefit from the data they provide back to us on Earth! Mark Lorden is our expert guide as the co-founder and Chief Business Development Officer of Exo-Space, where he and his team are working to leverage their expertise in A.I., machine vision, and satellite design to offer software and hardware packages that can withstand the harsh environment of space. The development of the commercial space industry that's happening right now represents massive steps toward a better tomorrow." BROWNSVILLE, Texas - The potential benefits to Brownsville in particular and the Rio Grande Valley as a whole of expanding their presence in the NewSpace economy were discussed at the recent BTX Developers Event. The event was hosted by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership in conjunction with Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation and the City of Brownsville. The even comprised a luncheon attended by real estate developers, potential investors and community leaders and two bus tours, one that took in downtown Brownsville and another that featured the city's industrial parks and international airport. The luncheon was held at the Brownsville Events Center. One of the keynote speakers spoke in depth about the NewSpace economy - Brant Arseneau, founder of SpacedVentures and 9Point8 Capital. Arseneau has based his finance company in Brownsville.According to Wikipedia, Joseph Brant Arseneau is “an entrepreneur and executive, best known for his work in both fintech and space technology. He is generally known in finance for his work in Electronic Trading, Renewable Energy Derivatives, and Capital Markets technology.”In his remarks, Arseneau spoke about NewSpace today being in roughly the same place as the digital economy was in the mid-1990s. In other words, it is poised for rapid growth. “Right now, about $400 billion of revenue is being generated within the industry. Morgan Stanley and Bank of America feel that that is going to grow to $1.4 trillion dollars by 2030 and, further, to $3 trillion by 2040. And just to put that into perspective. The oil and gas industry is around $3 trillion. So, it is quite a mass ver amount of capital flowing into the industry.”This podcast features Arseneau's remarks at the BTX Developers Event luncheon.
