“Any movement that aspires to be critical must be self-critical. There is value in approaching 'critical' not as an identity, a label, or a dividing line, but rather as a mode of engagement, as a virtue of philosophical and scientific thought. Critical psychiatry, if it is to embody this virtue, can only do so by insisting that it is a 'theory in the making' and by demonstrating continuous self-criticism, questioning, re-examination, and exploration of new possibilities.” - Awais Aftab, Conversations in Critical PsychiatryTo move beyond binaries in mental health, we must complicate questions such as: ‘to medicalize or not to medicalize?' or ‘is it a biological or a psychological problem?' Since psychiatrists get almost exclusively medical training, Dr. Aftab advocates for what he calls “conceptual competency,” problematizing basic assumptions about the mind and brain that can prevent clinicians from truly supporting people and safeguarding their agency. In this episode, we explore the tensions between orthodox psychiatry and its critics, the future of psychiatric diagnostics, and how learning from philosophy and neuroscience can bring fresh perspectives. In this episode we discuss: conceptual competency and challenging underlying assumptions in psychiatry ways in which critical psychiatry/psychology could benefit from being self-critical how modern neuroscience can help break down old binaries how to decide where to intervene across bio, psycho, social factors ADHD as an example of complex causal factors childhood trauma and brain/biological changes why issues in broader medical disciplines apply to psychiatry pluralism and how can disciplines can come together future of diagnostics beyond the DSM eraBioDr. Awais Aftab is clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University and practices as a psychiatrist in Cleveland, OH, USA. His academic, educational, and public-facing work focuses on conceptual and critical issues in psychiatry. He led the interview series “Conversations in Critical Psychiatry” for Psychiatric Times, and a book adaptation has been published by Oxford University Press. Suppose you polled therapists and asked them what the most controversial diagnosis is in the current version of the DSM. Many of us would likely say Borderline Personality Disorder, and it would certainly be in almost everybody's top three.I've been wanting to do an episode on BPD for a bit because there is something about this controversial diagnosis that allows us to explore the challenging and consequential nature of psychiatric diagnosis itself. To guide us in this exploration, I've had the privilege of inviting Dr. Awais Aftab, a leading authority in the field. Functional medicine can be tricky. On the one hand, there are SO MANY healing modalities that are 100% rooted in solid, up to date science. On the other hand, there are ALWAYS things that people are trying (and swearing by) that might not have the human studies to back them up quite yet. When this happens, we think the right thing to do is to simply share stories to bring AWARENESS to the subject, not necessarily so that people go out and try these things. With all this said, our repeat guest today, Awais Spall, is a former chemist and active Functional Diagnostic Nutrition practitioner that has some INCREDIBLE healing stories of peptides. What are peptides exactly? How are they administered? Where can you find them and are they safe? All of these questions and more are shared in this episode. We hope you enjoy, and as always, please feel free to reach out to us with any questions on Instagram @fdntraining. LOOKING FOR THE FDN SUMMER OPEN HOUSE? About Awais: Awais Spall is a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. About 11 years ago, he began to experience a strange myriad of digestive issues and muscle spasms. He was soon diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Irritable Bowel Disease. Over the next few years, Awais saw over 30 doctors, a process that cost him thousands in medical debt with no major change in symptoms. Then in 2017, he decided to take his health into his own hands through Functional Diagnostic Nutrition's training program. Alongside FDN, he pursued a rigorous study of Ayurveda, an ancestral form of healing that holds so many keys to wellness. Through the Combination of Functional Medicine and Ayurveda, Awais noticed dramatic improvements in his digestion and energy, in only a matter of weeks! Today, his mission is to share his unique approach to empower those that are suffering and, like him, are unsatisfied with conventional medicine. Where to find Awais: IG: www.integrativeoasis.com

Did you know that the health of your microbiome affects your mental health, metabolism, and immune system? There's really no part of your body that's not affected by your microbiome health. Microbiome medicine is about rebalancing and nurturing your body's biome. It's less about completely eradicating something, and more about bringing something back into balance. I'm joined by Awais Spall, certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. We're discussing how he combines Ayurveda, Functional Medicine, and peptides to create a protocol that helps optimize the health of the microbiome. If you're new to the system of Ayurveda, you'll want to tune in as we deep dive into the definition of Ayurveda and the three doshas it consists of. Awais Spall FDN-P is a Functional Medicine practitioner based out of Santa Monica, CA. Prior to becoming a health practitioner, Awais worked as a formulation chemist for various cannabis companies. As a product formulator, Awais combined his knowledge of formulation chemistry with his background in Ayurvedic Herbalism. Awais has inherited much of his knowledge around Ayurveda from his grandfather, who was a renowned herbalist in Pakistan. Awais eventually left the formulation world to pursue his deeper calling in life as an alchemist of the healing arts. In his practice at Integrative Oasis, Awais combines the cutting edge science of Functional Medicine with Ayurveda to address various gut health issues. His practice also integrates peptide medicine, bio-regulators, exosomes, ozone therapy, plant medicines, among various biohacking technologies to create optimal wellness. What we discuss: 00:01:01 - What brought Awais to combine Ayurveda, Functional Medicine, and peptides 00:03:44 - The definition of Ayurveda 00:05:35 - The three elements of Ayurveda 00:09:51 - Microbiome medicine 00:13:48 - The microbiome and probiotics 00:18:22 - How nutrition is part of the microbiome 00:25:56 - Tests for helping people with their microbiome medicine 00:32:16 - What would a microbiome medicine protocol look like? 00:37:02 - The different forms lymphatic drainage 00:43:52 - How peptides fit into Integrative Oasis 00:52:07 - How people could be using peptides wrong 00:57:34 - The art of microbiome medicine Key Takeaways: The word Ayurveda is a conjugation of two words: 'ayus', meaning 'life' and 'veda', meaning 'science'. Ayurveda is defined as the science of how to live your life, and your mind, body, and spirit play a role in Ayurveda. The three doshas of Ayurveda are vata, kapha, and pitta. It is possible to be a combination of two or even all three of these doshas, and there are tests to determine which one a person is. Part of optimizing your microbiome health is reconditioning the gut by strategically weeding things out, and then taking probiotics appropriately. Adding peptides to a protocol can help speed up the protocol, and as a result speed up that nourishment. In this Episode, we take a look back at 2022, revisiting the year that it has been and some of the best episodes on the show. Wishing everyone listening, Merry Christmas and a great close to the year, 2022. It's been another year since the podcast has been running and I could not be more thankful to all of you for listening and supporting this journey. As we conclude the year, I figured it would be interesting to try a different format and summarise the year, instead of a new Episode! And so through the episode, I go ahead and share a brief recap of the year that it has been for the Podcast, along with some very interesting best episodes + learnings through the year. We published 51 Episodes through the year before this one, which included 3 masterclasses and 48 episodes as a part of the general series without missing a single week of publishing through the year. From covering Gaming to Logistics to FinTech to Real Estate, this year had some of the most mature conversations on the podcast! Looking back, I have so many favorites - highlighting some is very difficult, but let me try. We had some great Venture Episodes through the year, including the one with Vikram of Matrix, Hemant of General Catalyst, Deven of Insight, Mridul of Elevation, Vaibhav of Better. The common learnings through these episodes around business cycles, sustainably winning, building culture at VC Funds and pattern recognition are a gold mine of insights. If you're looking to understand the Venture World better, this is a great place to dive deeper. I hosted some of the best Founders in the ecosystem through the year. Some unforgettable episodes include the ones with Vasanth of smallcase, Rohit of Darwinbox, Sai of MPL, Ankush of ShareChat, Ankit of CureFoods, Shashank of The Whole Truth, Gaurav of Yubi, Awais of Pixxel, Pratham of Masters' Union and Ruchi of Oxyzo. All of these episodes and the others, highlight distinct founder traits and learnings from journeys' which exhibit great perseverance, grit and passion for building. I am so grateful to have started the podcast and I continue to cherish each & every new conversation on the show. In this Episode, I (@Jivraj Singh Sachar) speak with Awais Ahmed, Founder & CEO of Pixxel. Pixxel is a space data company, building a constellation of hyperspectral earth imaging satellites and the analytical tools to mine insights from that data. Simply stated, Pixxel solves for high quality satellite data, leading the Indian Space Tech Innovation from the front. Started by Awais & team in the final year of their college, Pixxel is one of the more incredible stories of our ecosystem. I sit with Awais to decode this 3 year long journey of building India's first & leading space company. Through the conversation we chat about a host of things, including the challenges of building in a rather technical market. Amongst others, we discuss working with multiple stakeholders, re-inventing the wheel, culture at Pixxel, Awais being a stoic and what it means to be a young founder in our ecosystem. This one is incredibly unique, let's dive into the 102nd Episode of the Indian Silicon Valley Podcast with Awais Ahmed.
