Astronomy Daily - The Podcast: 17th September 2024Welcome to Astronomy Daily, your go-to Podcast for the latest and most exciting developments in space and Astronomy. I'm your host, Anna, and I'm thrilled to bring you another episode packed with fascinating stories from the cosmos. Today, we've got a stellar lineup of topics that span from Earth to the far reaches of our galaxy. So strap in and prepare for liftoff as we journey through the universe's latest mysteries and marvels.Highlights:- Ariane 6 Rocket Update: Europe's newest rocket, the Ariane 6, made its inaugural launch on July 9th this year. Despite a successful series of trials, the mission ended with the upper stage coasting in orbit, unable to complete its final planned maneuver. ArianeSpace has traced this issue to a fixable software fault and is committed to staging a second mission before the end of the year. This rocket, developed at an estimated cost of €4 billion, aims to maintain Europe's competitiveness in the global launch market.- James Webb Space Telescope Discovery: The James Webb Space Telescope has identified a supermassive black hole that's starving its host galaxy, nicknamed Pablo's galaxy. Located 12 billion light-years away, this galaxy is in a quenched state, expelling gas at speeds of about 1000 km/second, effectively cutting off the galaxy's fuel for star formation. This discovery is a crucial piece of evidence in understanding how galaxies evolve over cosmic time.- US-Australia Spaceport Collaboration: The recent ratification of the US-Australia Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA) opens up new possibilities for US companies to use Australian spaceports for launches and payload returns. Australia's vast uninhabited landscapes and less congested air and sea traffic offer unique advantages for launch and reentry. This collaboration could further strengthen strategic capabilities between the two nations.- New Mars Revelations: Recent gravity data studies have uncovered dense, large-scale features beneath Mars' surface, shedding light on the planet's geological history and volcanic activity. These findings suggest that Mars might still have active internal movements. Scientists are proposing the Martian Quantum Gravity (MaQis) mission to map Mars' gravity field in unprecedented detail.- This Week's Rocket Launches: SpaceX is gearing up for two Falcon 9 missions this week. The first launch from Cape Canaveral will carry a pair of Galileo global positioning satellites, while the second from Vandenberg Space Force Base will launch another batch of Starlink satellites, pushing the number of operational Starlink satellites past the 6000 mark. Rocket Lab is also preparing for an Electron launch from New Zealand, carrying the second batch of nanosatellites for Kinéis.For more space news, be sure to visit our website at astronomydaily.io.

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2023 3:14

Amazon launches test satellites for its planned internet service to compete with SpaceX

Amazon launched the first test satellites for its planned internet service on October 6 as a rival to SpaceX's broadband network. United Launch Alliance's (ULA) Atlas V rocket blasted off with the pair of test satellites, kicking off a program that aims to improve global internet coverage with an eventual 3,236 satellites around Earth. Amazon plans to begin offering service by the end of next year. Elon Musk's SpaceX has a huge head start over Amazon and its founder Jeff Bezos, who has his own rocket company, Blue Origin. SpaceX flew its first test Starlink satellites in 2018 and the first operational satellites in 2019. It has since launched more than 5,000 Starlinks from Florida and California, using its own Falcon rockets. Europe's Eutelsat OneWeb is also launching internet satellites, with around 600 in orbit. Amazon originally agreed to put the satellites on the debut launch of ULA's Vulcan rocket. But with the Vulcan grounded by problems until at least the end of this year, Amazon switched to the long-established Atlas V. When licensing the program, the Federal Communications Commission stipulated that at least half of the planned satellites will be operating by 2026 and all of them by 2029. Amazon has reserved 77 launches from ULA, Blue Origin, and Europe's Arianespace to get everything up. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The clock is ticking on Voyager's aspirations in LEO.In 2021, the Denver-based space exploration company announced its goal to launch a commercial space station by 2028, three years ahead of the ISS retirement. Clay Mowry, the chief revenue officer of Voyager Space and one of the driving forces behind that vision, joins Pathfinder this week to dive into the company's plans to build infrastructure in Earth orbit. The LEO significance: With the ISS bowing out, LEO-based ventures like Voyager's Starlab are poised to fill a gap in LEO, though they aren't the only ones chasing that goal. Other companies like Axiom, Sierra Space, and Northrop are working in partnership with NASA to capture the billions of dollars spent on the ISS every year. The focus of Starlab, which is partially funded by a $160M space act agreement with NASA, will be on research applications, rather than tourism. The station is designed to fit on a single launch, outfitted on the ground with all the research equipment needed for its customers. It's expected to be able to hold four people and will be used to conduct scientific research. The company recently announced a collaboration with Airbus Defense and Space. The international joint venture will be based out of the US, but features a European arm focused on serving the European Space Agency (ESA) and its member space agencies.A sneak peak…Before taking up the role of CRO in January 2022, Mowry made instrumental contributions at Blue Origin and oversaw operations at Arianespace, Inc. Beyond Voyager, Mowry's influence extends to the International Astronautical Federation, an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that was founded in 1951 to promote the peaceful use of space. In addition to Voyager's future, we chat:Clay's time at Arianespace and Blue OriginWhy Starlab is critical to our future in spaceThe partnership with AirbusCultural changes in the space industryThe IAF and its missionAnd much more…This episode is brought to you by SpiderOak, a US-based software company that builds space cybersecurity products and solutions for civilian, military, and commercial space operations. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. **Tai-Ex opening ** The Tai-Ex opened up 147-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 14,381 on turnover of 15.2-billion N-T. The Tai-Ex staged a mild technical rebound on Wednesday from the previous session, but turnover remained moderate as investors opted to stay on the sidelines amid lingering concerns over the global economic slowdown.. Buying largely focused on old economy stocks, while the bellwether electronics sector saw its gains limited by investor worries over on-going inventory adjustments affecting the global tech sector. **MOHW Could Ease Molnupiravir Distribution Regualtions ** Health Minister Hsueh Rui-yuan says his office is considering expanding the distribution and use of the coronavirus oral antiviral agent molnupiravir. Speaking a hearing of the Legislative Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee, the minister said prescription restrictions could be eased, more medical personnel now have a better understanding of the usage of the drug. The statement comes after the Taiwan Medical Association complained that the procedure for prescribing and obtaining (獲得) molnupiravir is overly troublesome and as a result, some doctors are choosing not to prescribe it. **UNSC Adopts First Myanmar Resolution ** The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution calling for the immediate end to violence in Myanmar. A military coup (政變) in February last year led to violent crackdowns on pro-democracy protests and the arrest of the country's leader Aung San Suu Kyi. William Denselow reports from UN headquarters in New York. **Russia Announces Plans to Beef Up Military ** Russia announced an ambitious plan to beef up its military from 1 million to 1.5 million and create multiple new units. It's an attempt to bolster the forces that have lost momentum (動力) and many soldiers in the war in Ukraine. Russia's military chief cited NATO's plans to incorporate Finland and Sweden as a factor in the buildup. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu declared Wednesday that the country needs a force of 1.5 million to guarantee Russia's security. The Russian military currently has about 1 million soldiers. That compares with China's force of 2 million and the U.S. force of 1.4 million. **European Rocket Launch Fails ** The launch of a European rocket carrying two Earth observation satellites failed and ditched (拋棄,丟棄) in the sea less than three minutes after lift-off from a spaceport in French Guiana on Wednesday. Arianespace, which provided the launch service, said in a statement that approximately 2 minutes and 22 seconds after liftoff a decrease in pressure was observed in the Vega C rocket's second stage “leading to the premature end of the mission.” Arianespace said the launcher was destroyed with “no damage to persons or properties.” The launch was meant to take two earth observation satellites made by Airbus into orbit. The satellites would have been part of a constellation capable of taking images of any point of the global with a resolution of 30 centimeters. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Amazon has deals with three rocket companies to help launch communications satellites that the online retail giant says will help provide fast, affordable broadband to millions of underserved people around the world. Seattle-based Amazon said Tuesday that Arianespace, United Launch Alliance and Blue Origin will combine for up to 83 launches during the next five years, deploying the majority of Amazon's 3,236 low-earth satellites to be used for what Amazon is calling “Project Kuiper.” No financial details were given. Amazon and Blue Origin were both founded by Jeff Bezos, who blasted into space on a Blue Origin rocket last summer. Blue Origin signed on for 12 launches, with options for up to 15 more. Arianespace is the European space consortium that launched NASA's $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope in December. Amazon contracted for 18 launches of its new Ariane 6 rocket that will put satellites into orbit. Arianespace hailed the deal as its largest ever, although it didn't give a monetary value. “That Amazon has chosen the Ariane 6 to do the job is a matter of tremendous pride for us and a great vote of confidence for our new launch vehicle. This day marks a decisive success for the Ariane 6 program,” said Stephane Israël, CEO of Arianespace. Amazon contracted for 38 launches with Colorado-based United Launch Alliance. Amazon has 1,000 employees working on Project Kuiper, which it says, once deployed, will be able to serve tens of millions of residential, business, and government customers in places without dependable broadband.
