What parents need to know to advocate for their child. In today's podcast, Mary talks with special education advocate Leah Roberts from LMR Educational Consulting. Leah is an educational consultant who helps parents of special needs children work with their child's school to secure support services. She helps parents understand the steps to get evaluations, 504s, IEPs. She teaches parents to effectively advocate for their children. Leah has been a teacher, a reading specialist, and a special education teacher. After taking time to be a stay-at-home mom, she returned to education and oversaw IEP programs within schools. Eventually, she branched out and became a consultant, helping families navigate the complex process of special education. Today Leah fights to for students and families to ensure schools are meeting their obligation to help every student. Mary and Lead discuss the complexities in understanding evaluation results, IEPs and 504s. And how, sadly, most parents find Leah only when they've hit rock bottom and are getting nowhere with the school on their own. Leah explains why, in a perfect world, she wouldn't have a job. And why it's so challenging for school systems to properly train personnel on the laws impacting special education. Leah provides advice for what parents can do if they suspect a learning issue in their child. And why learning struggles have become even more evident during COVID and online learning. Parents know their children best! But, many parents wish they knew more to help them better advocate for their child at school. Learn tips from the experts in this episode of Thriving Special Families.Robin DriverIs a Special Education Advocate and Autism mom. After Robin's son was diagnosed with Autism, she dove deep into all things Autism, including underlying medical issues that her son was going through. Out of everything she was learning, Special Education Law and Advocacy excited Robin the most, because it was a real tangible way to make changes that would lead to progress. She went on to learn more about Special Education Law, by attending the University of San Diego for their Special Education Law Advocacy program, receiving her first Advocacy Certificate in 2012. Robin later went back in 2019 to USD for their updated Special Education Law Advocacy program, and her second Advocacy Certificate. Now, she assists families in Southern California and remotely in Utah currently. As a parent of a special needs child, Robin knows all too well how it feels when districts try to put your child in a cookie cutter program that is not suited for their individual needs. When working with families, it's always her goal to teach families their rights, best practices, how to research, etc- as much as possible -during the process, so that if they ever need advocacy again, and don't have immediate access, they will know where to start on their own. Advocacy is a roadmap to progress, and it is Robin's biggest passion to share this with other parents. We start by defining the differences between a Special Education Advocate and an Education Consultant - two roles I had been using interchangeably. From here our conversation shifted into when families should consider hiring a special education advocate and how to pick one. Monica and I agree it's important to consider personality, because this is someone you could be spending a lot of time with, and if they are interfacing with the IEP team it's our professional opinion to work with someone who is collaborative (and can be tough when/if necessary) because it's very likely you'll be working with these team members for a while. Remember, most staff want your child to be successful. Do your best to keep this in mind as you go through the process, and view those sitting across the table from you as fellow human beings deserving professional respect. We would tell them the same thing - the parents sitting across the table are not just another "number"; they have feelings and deserving of respect as well. Stacey discusses how the immersive experience living away from home in a setting such as Riverview School, a co-educational boarding school placement, can be beneficial for those with "complex learning challenges" and has served her daughter well. Keeping the big picture in mind while advocating for the most effective programming for our loved ones challenged by special needs and trying to stay positive while making and keeping connections, are a few tools that have served Stacey well over the years. She urges parents to keep setting the bar high and remember that the main goal of any transition is that our loved ones are able to hold a job and live independently as possible. She states, "I don't know if it's just people have pity on kids with special needs....oh their lives are so hard that you know... let's not push them anymore. Let's keep them happy. But she's the type of kid that like most kids, if you're not going to push her, she's not going to take on anything herself, she's going to sit back and coast and play Uno all day if they'll let you. But at the end of the day, we're doing these kids a tremendous disservice because, okay, we might be keeping them happy, but that's going to help them later on. Is that going to help only hold a job or live independently or have you know, great friendships with people if they're not pushed outside their comfort zone?
