Unlike most of America, the COVID-19 pandemic did not take three weeks off to protest police violence. Chris Colby returns to the pod as the COVID-19 expert, and gives updates on the pandemic, including new hot spots in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, and other places with medium-density population centers. Chris and Greg discuss whether wearing masks is effective (SPOILER: They protect other people, wear them). Jeff and Jerad describe the social pressure to avoid mask wearing, and how mask wearing has become a political football. Jim closes out the COVID-19 discussion with a concise and efficient discussion of the politics of the pandemic. In the final ten minutes, the panel discusses the revelations in John Bolton’s new book, concluding that even if Bolton’s allegations are true it won’t change anyone’s mind about Donald Trump.

This week, Stu and AJ try to resist the temptation to call shutdown protesters idiots. Spoiler: They fail. Yes, even as Trump's own administration is issuing lifesaving guidance to control a once-in-a-century deadly pandemic, he is encouraging his followers to defy and protest that guidance. Spoiler 2: People will die because of this. At the same time, Trump is refusing to do his job and help states get the supplies they need to save lives, and some governors are going to incredible lengths to get things done despite him. Take Action: Contact your governor and tell them to release nonviolent offenders who are in increasingly unsanitary and often deadly conditions as a result of the pandemic. Moment of Uplift: As short-sighted protestors take to the street in protest, making challenges to health care providers even more difficult, a few brave nurses took to the street (in between 18-hour shifts saving lives) to confront protestors and make a bold statement. Hello everyone! Our bumper, hour-long episode is all about car culture (pronounced "ka-kultur"). Gavin introduces Nick to his sports car - a 1973 orange MG, with added rain leakage. Gav also reads saucy letters from the MG Owners Club Magazine. Mmmm. Nick has never been in a sports car before. He'd always wanted to drive one since he was a very small boy. Instead, he drives sensible family cars, and wonders where his dreams went... Gavin and Nick discuss music and cars, including songs that are inspired by or about driving. Car adverts are examined. Spoiler: They have always been appalling. We take a look at several films about cars and car culture, from John Carpenter's Christine to Jean-Luc Godard's Weekend. We even did some research from the internet and discovered when electric motors for cars were first invented. Clue: it wasn't in the last 30 years. The talk moves inevitably to Elon Musk, and we wonder what transport will look like in 50 years' time. Or, as Gavin puts it, the "future history"of cars.

The Tour de France burst into life with a classic mountain stage on La Planche des Belles Filles, with the final gravel section seeming to put an element of doubt into the minds of the riders. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau recap the sixth stage of the Tour which saw two debutants take the major honours. The stage was won by Belgian rider Dylan Teuns with his breakaway companion Giulio Ciccone pinching the yellow jersey by a fine margin despite a spirited late bid to keep it by Julian Alaphilippe. To begin with, we hear from a range of riders and team managers about what they expected from the stage and then discuss whether their predictions matched the reality. Spoiler: They didn’t. We ask why no one chased harder earlier in the stage, we weigh up who had a good day and who didn’t, and discuss the significance of Geraint Thomas’s strength in the final few hundred metres of the stage. For our third episode of the Billy Gilmore podcast, we look at Sandler's second film in 1996, BULLETPROOF, and we ask ourselves: is it really bulletproof? For his first (and one of his only) action roles, Adam teamed up with Damon Wayans and director Ernest Dickerson (Juice, Demon Knight, Bones) for this hard R buddy comedy. Join as we discuss one of Adam's least talked about movies and try to answer some difficult questions: Could the Sandman have been an action star? How much of an “Adam Sandler movie” is this? Have the movie’s jokes aged well? (Spoiler: They have not!) Is Bulletproof actually a love story? Check out the episode for the answers to these and other burning questions. And maybe we'll all go to Disneyland afterwards.
“You should be craving to chat with people who haven't revealed their identity. Because they're the most honest people you'll ever meet. Here's why...” [Discuss the episode here: http://join.dialog.fm/t/dialog-003/40] While we’re busy chasing & begging people to talk to us, there are people on our websites right now, who actually want to talk to us. While we are at a trade show, or cold-calling people, we’re often ignoring the very people who actually want to talk to us, right now. (Spoiler: They’re surfing our website.) It’s worth spending a little more time with them, instead of chasing down the people who never wanted to talk to us in the first place. On this episode of Dialog, our host Chris Handy dives into how we’re missing the easiest way to capitalize on buyer intent, and buyer intelligence. “While we’re too busy chasing people who never want to talk, there are people on our websites right now, who actually want to talk with us.” Chris Handy is the executive chairman of ClosedWon, a consultancy that partners with Drift to help enterprise B2B clients close more deals.
As podcasters, we're always looking to get more people to subscribe to our show. But that drive runs counter to the new wave of podcast listeners, who want to be nothing more than that -- a casual listener. In this short episode, I'll share with you three real-world stories that lead me to this conclusion. One was a young woman who professes a love for listening to podcasts all the time, but doesn't subscribe to any. Instead, she just searches for something that sounds interesting. When that's over, she searches for something else. Another was a more mature woman -- a podcaster, even -- who listens to lots of podcasts (like this one) but doesn't subscribe. She catches lots of shows "live" on social media platforms, or follows links she sees in her Twitter feed. And then there was that much-lambasted study by the University of Florida and Futuri Media that claimed that YouTube was where the vast majority of listeners discover and listen to podcasts. That didn't sit well with many. Maybe not even me. But those signs, plus the fact that Google Podcasts is transcribing content podcasting content to feed to their algorithm, and even Apple is coming out with cross-platform webpages for podcasts that are indexable by search engines... it points to a growing trend that subscribing is now more optional than ever. What are we going to do about that? Well, I have a few ideas that are in the episode. Spoiler: They little to do with trying to convince these non-subscribers of the benefits of subscribing. Using a podcast as an internal communication tool isn't new to companies. But some companies are taking novel approaches to this intimate communication medium, drawing on the lessons learned from 15 years of podcasting and breaking down some long-held assumptions about privacy. Last week, the Washington Post had an intriguing story: In the nine years before now-President Donald Trump announced his candidacy, his company paid $400 million in cash to buy a number of properties. Real estate companies doing deals usually borrow money for the same reason that many homeowners take out mortgages: Leveraging your money—especially when the cost of borrowing is low, as it has been for a decade—makes your money go farther. The fact that Trump, the self-styled “king of debt," didn’t do that in these deals has raised a number questions, including how the Trump Organization had so much cash, and why it would use it to purchase properties in all cash. Eric Trump told the Washington Post that the money came from profits that his father put back in the business. “He had incredible cash flow and built incredible wealth,” the younger Trump said. “We invested in ourselves.” In this Trump Inc. podcast extra, we speak to the New Yorker’s Adam Davidson and the Washington Post’s David Fahrenthold, who wrote last week’s story with Jonathan O'Connell and Jack Gillum. Davidson and Fahrenthold talk about trying to make the numbers and the explanations add up. (Spoiler: They can’t.) “There's this fundamental question we have,” says Davidson. “Where did the money come from and why was it spent the way it was spent? There’s some piece of information that we are missing because none of the explanations make sense.”

Terrible Opinions Matthias: I thought Lin-Manuel Miranda was rude when I first heard the story about he talked to Vice President Mike Pence from the stage when Pence saw “Hamilton.” But now that I’ve enjoyed his musical work and looked at his remarks in context, I’m more inclined to be OK with what he said. Dina: I hate Disney because I had terrible experiences at Disney World and also Mickey Mouse is creepy. Jordan: I understand what Rachel Bloom was attempting to do with her performance on Bill Nye’s new show (even though she obviously failed). Bill Nye’s handmaid world The big news this week was the GOP’s healthcare bill, a swap for Obamacare that hasn’t made anyone happy. Matthias talked about some of the reactions to the healthcare bill, including the vitriol directed at people like Mary Katherine Ham who are trying to be reasonable. One of the accusations against the GOP is that they are trying to take healthcare from women in particular and that they are targeting pregnant moms. We touched on a comment in TV host Bill Nye’s new Netflix show that showed how progressives target moms and children. The former “Science Guy” suggested that the government start taxing larger families with “extra kids” because they are supposedly bad for the environment. “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been a rallying cry for a lot of liberal feminists who think Republicans are on the verge of outlawing abortion and cutting off access to birth control (Spoiler: They’re not). Dina analyzed the bigger picture, looking at the dystopian story as a reflection of our world today because 2016 was a dark year and 2017 hasn't been much better. As world powers shift abroad and changes like the new healthcare bill disrupt their lives here, people feel less safe than ever. Jordan noted that recent TV has become increasingly dark and emotionally dense, whether it's "The Handmaid's Tale," "13 Reasons Why" or even the surprise hit "This Is Us," which told the story of a real, relateable family that was funny and enjoyable but still included themes of heartbreak, tragedy and loss.
Jeremy and Sarah get a request to discuss games that have helped them get through more of the difficult times. They may also be going a little off topic during this topic to create more topics. Sarah tries to keep Jeremy on topic while also interrupting to derail, which seems really counter intuitive. The only thing they can really tell you is they like to have fun. Jeremy also becomes word confused, creating the word 'Submersive' instead of 'Immersive'. Spoiler: They probably made up 20 more versions of this during the recording of this episode.
