Gewonnen hat Jhonatan Narváez vom UAE Team Emirates-XRG. Der Ecuadorianer setzte sich im Sprint einer stark reduzierten Spitzengruppe gegen Orluis Aular und Giulio Ciccone durch. Für Narváez war es der dritte Giro-Etappensieg seiner Karriere. Die entscheidende Phase entstand am Schlussanstieg nach Cozzo Tunno. Das Team Movistar forcierte dort das Tempo so stark, dass das Feld auseinanderfiel. Hay una frase que me gusta mucho de esta charla con ‪Carlos Verona que es cuando se refiere a su victoria en el Giro de Italia, la segunda en una carrera de 15 años trabajando para otros. Fue un triunfo pensado como gregario para animar la moral del equipo tras la retirada de Giulio Ciccone.  Nos conocemos hace años y desde el primer día siempre me ha llamado la atención su madurez, su sentido del trabajo y su responsabilidad. Desde hace unos años admiro también su compromiso con tantos proyectos.  Charlamos durante una de las concentraciones en altura del equipo en Andorra después del Giro de Italia en el que el Lidl-Trek logró seis victorias de etapa en quince días.

Per quel che riguarda l'Oscar del ciclismo italiano nel 2023, Dagnoni preferirebbe assegnarlo alla “nazionale italiana con tecnici, meccanici e massaggiatori inclusi”, ma fa tre nomi in particolare: “Se dovessi scegliere, tra gli uomini potrebbero contenderselo Ganna per le imprese che ha fatto e Viviani per come sostiene e stimola i giovani. Giulio Ciccone gooide zijn zonnebril in het publiek voor zijn overwinning in de etappe van zondag en huilde tranen met tuiten. Volgens Koen de Kort, ook van Team Trek Segafredo kwam de frustratie over mislukte seizoenen er bij de Italiaan uit.  De zonnebril deed Mart terugdenken aan Gerrit Solleveld die in de tour van 1985 in stromende regen solo aankwam en de zonnebril opzette. Hij hoopte dat het de sponsor gunstig zou stemmen, want er was een kindje op komst. Later stuurde hij de bril naar ene M. Smeets te Haarlem. En natuurlijk zet Mart die bril even op.  En met de slotweek voor de boeg is de vraag wie kan Carapaz nog van de eindoverwinning afhouden? Verder blijft deze Giro De Kopgroep prima bevallen. Bijna elke etappe laten de Nederlandse renners zich zien en er is drama genoeg. Dat belooft nog wat voor de komende bergetappes en de slottijdrit in Verona...

After the drama at La Planche des Belles Filles yesterday, the Tour de France settled in for a long, slow day in the sun. Heading into the Burgundy region famous for its snails, the peloton pedalled at a snail’s pace for much of the day. But there’s no such thing as a snoozy episode of The Cycling Podcast and so we join Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau at their hotel for a recap of the stage. The Tour de France burst into life with a classic mountain stage on La Planche des Belles Filles, with the final gravel section seeming to put an element of doubt into the minds of the riders. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau recap the sixth stage of the Tour which saw two debutants take the major honours. The stage was won by Belgian rider Dylan Teuns with his breakaway companion Giulio Ciccone pinching the yellow jersey by a fine margin despite a spirited late bid to keep it by Julian Alaphilippe. To begin with, we hear from a range of riders and team managers about what they expected from the stage and then discuss whether their predictions matched the reality. Spoiler: They didn’t. We ask why no one chased harder earlier in the stage, we weigh up who had a good day and who didn’t, and discuss the significance of Geraint Thomas’s strength in the final few hundred metres of the stage. Bad weather and dangerous descents made for a captivating 16th stage of the 2019 Giro. The Italian rider Giulio Ciccone won, whilst Richard Carapaz remains the race General Classification leader, a lead he took from Primoz Roglic whose tour turned on its head after a badly timed toilet break. He now sits third behind Carapaz and Vincenzo Nibali with just five stages left. BBC Cycling commentator Simon Brotherton, joins Jeremy Whittle and Gareth Rhys Owen.

On another day of miserable weather at the Giro d’Italia there was an enthralling stage that included the climb of the Passo del Mortirolo, which saw Vincenzo Nibali on the attack and Primoz Roglic losing valuable time. Richard Moore and Daniel Friebe are joined by Brian Nygaard to discuss the implications of the day’s stage for the final destination of the pink jersey, with Richard Carapaz looking an increasingly likely winner. Nibali is up to second while Roglic has dropped to third. There are interviews with Luca Guercilena, manager of the Trek-Segafredo team, whose rider, Giulio Ciccone took a well-deserved stage win.
