Have you been called bossy or pushy at work when you were just doing your job? Have you been tough, when necessary, only to be deemed difficult to work for or with? The explanation for this is Tightrope Bias and the Likeability Dilemma. Research shows that in many workplaces' women wanting to advance often must take on more “masculine qualities” to get ahead, presenting as more ambitious, assertive, and competitive. Yet we are still expected to maintain our “feminine qualities” of being caring, modest, helpful, and nice. Research also confirms that women who violate stereotypically feminine social norms are often disliked and in turn penalized in their careers for violating gender norms. These inequitable stereotypes and biases result in negative expectations and evaluations of women's performance and potential. It leads women to constantly balance the “tightrope” between being liked and being seen as competent. We must stop obscuring and downplaying the real penalties women pay for simply doing what they need to do and what men do without penalty to get to the top. The advancing women podcast is where empathy meets pragmatism. It's not our fault, but it is our problem. This episode goes beyond identifying the problem by providing best practice strategies to fix the problem. Don't miss this episode to learn what we as women can do AND what organizations must do to overcome this workforce barrier. Today in the guest chair is Jasmin Foster, the Founder of Be Rooted, an inclusively designed stationery brand created to celebrate and uplift women of color. What I really love about Jasmin and her experience is that she started her career in retail on the buying side. And now here she is, a Founder who has landed as a product and business owner on the shelves of Target, the very company she started her career with! In today’s episode, I love what Jasmin had to share about: How the majority of her career in retail was pushing the boundaries of representation and inclusion How that led her to changing the face of the stationery industry with Be Rooted What it’s like to employ her parents! Cora Miller became the solution to the one recurring question she had after becoming a new mom: Why aren’t there specific hair products representative for boys of color? As she was looking for products to style her son’s hair that were clean and plant-based, to her surprise, there were none, and that bothered her. After seeing this gap in the marketplace and talking through her frustration with her husband, Young King Hair Care, the first multicultural beauty and wellness brand for young men, was born. Unlike other hair care brands, it didn’t start in the kitchen for this CEO. Instead, she did months of market research and found a research and development partner who understood her vision. In that search, Cora and her husband found a Black female chemist who had been working in the natural hair care industry for years, and their partnership took off! In a matter of a year, from research to final product, Young King Hair Care was ready to show young boys that it’s okay to groom themselves, and have a self-care moment just for them, too. From the official launch date in Dec. 2019, to starting with a table set-up in her home hallway, which she affectionately called “Young King Fulfillment Center,” to now being sold on Target shelves, the Millers are well on their way to redefining male grooming for the next generation. Things got a little out of hand on Episode 7 and Dr. Jayson flashed his frenulum! What is a frenulum? Good question, it's that little bit of skin on the underside of your penis, between your foreskin and the shaft of your penis that guys can sometimes tear during sex if it's too tight. More noticeable to guys who are uncircumcised, the frenulum can create some serious pain if torn during sex. Luckily, the Dick Doctors, @drjaysonoates & @dr.gavscriv offer a procedure called a Frenuloplasty which can help solve this problem. You can drop us a private message if this is something that impacts your love life and you'd like to discuss your options further with the dick doctors, otherwise you can listen to @dr.gavscriv & @drjaysonoates on The Penis Podcast on iTunes or Spotify - Links in our bio.
