EmmoLei Sankofa has been paving her own path and establishing her amazing sound as a storyteller through her scores for projects like Step Up: High Water, Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, and her recent score to the feature Three Ways, which is now streaming on Hulu. In this extensive chat we cover a wide array of topics covering not only EmmoLei's methods and approach to scoring, but also navigating the business, working with filmmakers, tackling different genres, adapting to change and so much more! We also look at how EmmoLei is re-defining how a composer is part of the creative team, and why she loves to go the extra mile to collaborate beyond the score. She serves as Executive Producer on Three Ways as well, and we discuss how that happened. EmmoLei also talks about her unique approach of using Morse code to come up with themes and melodies in her scores. Something that she's been utilizing since early on in her career, and one of the most interesting ways of crafting narrative structure. EmmoLei's passion and versatility has made her a premiere voice in the industry, and she's doing so by staying away from the conventional career routes to discover how artists can truly make a living and still be fulfilled by their work in this industry.

Kendra “KO” Oyesanya and Terrence “Rawswagger” Green unpack a lot on this informative and personal episode. From their starts in LA, going after their dreams, the audition process for Step Up and the phone call that changed both of their lives these two have experiences on experiences to share. Their self-confidence and their stubbornness of not accepting “no” as an answer has put these two at the top of their game and are changing the way dancers are looked at within the industry. Buckle up for a very informative and vulnerable ride.
This episode was recorded way back when, one of the first episodes of the first season of How to be Sound. This is me revisiting that episode – the only episode I've recorded with a person of colour, which is a massive failing on my part and something I will be looking to improve in the future. I've done a bad job of offering my listeners equal and fair representation of today's world, and for that I can only apologise. #BlackLivesMatterYou'll find Erica Cody on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – and you can check out her music videos (you should) on YouTube, too. Thank you so much for listening to How to be Sound. Please take some time to rate and/or review on iTunes; it helps other people who might like it to find How to be Sound! Producer extraordinaire Liam Geraghty's Meet Your Maker is also well worth a listen. Mother of Pod. Just in case you don't know what a Billie Barry kid is... BE WARNED: this will scar you for life. Check out BIMM, Ireland's music school (it's not really like Fame, allegedly). Step Up: High Water starring Jade Chynoweth is really, really good. I promise. Watsky: Moral of the Story is a good song to listen to (on repeat) when you're worrying about what other people are doing (unlike Erica, who's focused on her own sh*t). Holly Sorensen got her start writing for magazines after a series of odd jobs. At Premiere, she rose to Senior Editor and got what she described as a “graduate course in Hollywood.” She’s best known for her work on teen dramas like ‘Make It Or Break It’ and ‘Recovery Road,’ but she’s recently signed on to be the showrunner for YouTube Red’s first drama, ‘Step Up: High Water,’ loosely based off the ‘Step Up’ dance franchise that began with Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum. In this interview, Sorensen describes her advice from William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), the truth about the infamous Hunter S.
